Bit of a bad way to watch this show because the first episode and the last season are the weakest of the full show, doesn’t give a fair good representation of the series, hope you watch more of it later ^^

When they "rebuilt" her why couldn't they read her mind to find out what a human looks like.

I love first time viewers' reactions to seeing the Commodore vanish. Mind blowing moment that makes me wish I was seeing it for the first time. The flashback scenes were from the pilot that was rejected ("The Cage") for being "too cerebral" (i.e., too deep thinking and not enough monsters and action) and not shown on tv in its original form for about 20 years. Since the show had budget and time constraints, plus an unaired pilot, they decided to take advantage, kill two birds with one stone, so to speak, and save some money. Also, the nature of Pike's disfigurement allowed for another actor, Sean Kenney (who looked a lot like the original, Jeffrey Hunter), to play him. Couple of trivia bits about the aliens: the Talosians were portrayed by women but voiced by men. The Keeper's voice was the electronically altered voice of Malachi Throne, none other than Commodore Mendez. 😊

that exploding saucer section always gets to me.

The transporter malfunction, the transporter lost a lot of the signal during transport, and then the transporter tried to "form" them (i.e. put them together, as it naturally does) but it only had about half the signal and half the material (like trying to put a big Lego set together with half the instructions missing and most of the pieces missing as well) resulting in a horrific death.

Loved your reaction when the Commodore vanished! Yeah, a fantasy life can have a lot of appeal, especially to someone who was in the state of mind Pike had at the time. He was just complaining about all that responsibility and he could have chucked it all to be selfish. It says a lot that he stayed true to his profession and oath.

One of my favourite quotes in all of Star Trek is when Gorkon says to Kirk: "If there is to be a brave new world, our generation is going to have the hardest time living in it." How very true! As Kirk says at the end of the movie, a lot of people are afraid of change and the unknown ... the "undiscovered country".

I loved how, at the end, they change the "... where no man has gone before" to "where no ONE has gone before" (to encompass the fact that the galaxy does not just have humans, but many other species as well).

This movie came out around the same time as the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Unification, Parts 1 and 2" (with Mr. Spock). Spock cites the events of this movie to justify his actions in that particular TNG episode (I don't want to release any spoilers). This movie was also heavily influenced by the events of Chernobyl (Praxis) and the fall of the Soviet Union (peace between the Federation and the Klingons).

I'm glad the compassion of the Talosians won out in the end. After all, Pike did try to strangle one of these people when they were generous enough to hook him up with three women.

He left his body for a dream. Doesn't seem like captivity to me. In fact, compared to a dream, the material world kinda blows, mangled body or no 😊

It is good to remember that the flashback story ("The Cage") was created as a 'pilot' to pitch the Star Trek format to network executives. In many ways, it did this very well: three mini-episodes (framed as illusions) to show the execs the variety of stories the format would allow. "Look! We can go to a planet with a savage warrior, or Earth, or this pleasure-planet, or the mysterious Talosians themselves!" It is not clear why it was not picked up at this time. Roddenberry, perhaps self-servingly, said that the executives found it 'too cerebral' (the Talosians' fatal power of illusion can be read as a metaphor for television itself, which may not have sat well). And, too, it was clearly an expensive show to make compared to, say, Westerns. In any case, Paramount was given the green light to produce a _second_ Star Trek pilot and try again, an extremely unusual step.

Amazing episode and pilot for the series

There's a brief sequence of Vina dancing when Mendez says "That's Vina again as the Orion slave girl? 'that's not in the Cage - they had extra footage. Interesting story about the green make-up. They tested it on Majel Barrett (Christine Chapel/Number 1) to see which green looked best on film - but they kept coming back looking normal. The guy who was developing the film saw the footage and said "OMG this woman is green." and put the images through a process to make them look normal - he had no idea that her being green was part of a sci-fi show.

You haven't herd this French word but it's more likely heard menageetwoi. It's a similar pronunciation. MEN - AGH - AH - REE

Perhaps it wasn't known when this episode was filmed, but it takes a genetic pool of at least 100 to 500 individuals, (depending upon the study cited), to maintain proper genetic diversity and avoid "inbreeding" issues for the purpose of sustaining a healthy human population. Pike and Vina aren't enough. Even Number One and the young lady Yeoman added to the mix wouldn't provide enough genetic diversity. Get the whole ship down here, and maybe we have a slave population for the brainiacs, but until then it's just Pike's playground and harem.

All the stuff from 13 yrs ago was from that first pilot that they wrote a story around.

Where no man has gone before - was the second pilot which sold star trek as a series. This is the first pilot that was called "The Cage" which NBC rejected. They didn't really hate it thought there was still a good series that could be made an asked for a second pilot, something unheard of back then. They couldn't get Jeffrey Hunter for the second pilot and got William Shatner and the rest is history. They brought Pike back for Strange New Worlds but since it's a continuation of J.J. Trek it's not made for me. Anyways Pike clearly says the episode title in the Picnic Scene and is an English word that can be looked up so I suggest you do it. Leave long and prosper.

Jeffrey Hunter starred alongside John Wayne in The Searchers, and played both Jesus and the first Star Trek captain. That’s a nice resume.

The actors playing the Talosians are all female, it was thought this would throw the viewer off that much more and make their appearance feel more alien.

It was a movie in its original form as the first STAR TREK pilot.

Maybe you should go back & watch “The Cage” (the original pilot) before continuing on with episode 13.

Jeffery Hunter was not available to play Captain Pike in the series after the first Star Trek pilot was finished because Hunter's wife insisted that her husband perform on the "Big Screen!". Tragically, Jeffrey Hunter was killed while performing a stunt gone wrong on his last big screen movie😮.

The Pike history played during the court martial framing device was footage from Star Trek's unaired pilot episode, "The Cage". The studio had rejected it as "too cerebral" for audiences and also didn't want a woman as First Officer. Jeffrey Hunter's Pike was replaced by William Shatner's Kirk, and Number One's actor Majel Barrett became Nurse Chapel in the show as we know it now. Spock was promoted to First Officer and lost the inexperienced exciteability ("The Women!) from the pilot as Leonard Nimoy responded to Shatner's dynamic acting style by adopting the stoicism of the Number One and Pike characters in contrast. Would you have enjoyed a Star Trek series had it gone on in the mold of "The Cage"? I enjoy the series we ended up with, but I think I'd have liked that, too. Also, I like how Vulcan friendship is illustrated here-a very practical demonstration of depth of feeling for Pike that Kirk identified as an emotional display on Spock's part.

Well Will, when they remastered the series about 15 years ago, it was released in movie theatres. I was fortunate enough to see it on the big screen in my local theater here in California.

Checkov was originally on Kirk's Enterprise - but oddly enough, he wasn't in the episode where Khan made his debut ("Space Seed"). We can assume Checkov was not yet a bridge officer, and was a part of the crew stationed elsewhere on the ship at the time.

Just a great popcorn film that doesn't take itself too seriously. You gotta check out Mummy Returns, I think It's my favorite of the 2, but gotta love Benny!!! Brendan's neck.. yeah, good thing, because he almost died during the hanging scene.
