I always start more seeds than I can plant. It helps because they don't all sprout, and any extras I end up with are given to family and friends. I sure wish I lived near enough to donate my extra starts.

My hubby grew up on a dairy farm. When I told him about your compost incident, he immediately said, "They got green manure". That's what they used to call it, and he agreed, it wasn't composted nearly long enough. The ammonia smell was the dead giveaway.

Test it with a pea plant to make sure the compost isn’t contaminated with grazon too! It can ruin your garden for years if it’s contaminated with that herbicide

I purchased a dump truck load of top soil for my garden 2 seasons ago. Premium sifted top soil….paid way to much for it. It was contaminated with motor oil, car parts, spark plugs, herbicides….basically it was fill dirt. It was put on my garden and tilled in while I was at work. Needless to say, I lost my entire garden….literally thousands of dollars to get it removed, dug out and replaced. I was physically sick. The company would only refund the cost of the dirt. I still can’t think about it without crying…😢

A painful lesson I learned this year, I picked up a few plants at the nursery and a few from a big box store, it was still too cold to set them out, so I stored the starts in the basement with my seed starts…😔😔😔those plants had aphids!!!! And they infested some of my seed starts!!! I’ll never do that EVER again…y’all please learn from my mistake. It’s so painful to lose your seed starts…I started them in Feb 2024, I introduced the nursery plants early April, what a terrible mistake. Sorry that happened to you Mrs. H! Our soil is just not doing well this year, changeable weather and i suspect spray drift from nearby bigscale farmers, or what they are spraying in our skies ( its constant here, daily) poor germination, those things that do grow simply sit at the next stage,ie two or 4 true leaves..and never move, doesnt matter if theyre in greenhouse, under fleece or in the main beds..im flummoxed, now a lot are yellowing. Only plant that seems to be " ok" is the tomatoes.

I decided a couple of years ago that I was going on a mission to find grazon free cow patties! I found a local farmer right down the road that doesn't spray his fields with anything. His cattle free range and grian fed with his grown grain. He told me grab a bucket, grab a shovel. Have fun playing puckey picking. I picked up dried cow patties for about an hour. Only the driest! I used them to make cow patty tea to water with. After they were used, they went into compost. I haven't done it since out of fear because there is such an issue with pesticides. May need to pay him a visit this year to see if he is still pasturing his cattle on non-sprayed pasture.

I had my own pepper delima, but mine is different. When I started all my seeds, checking things off as I went, I somehow overlooked my peppers. I mean ALL of them! I had the seed packets with me when I began the process and must have filed them as planted. No peppers :(
Even though late, I did start them 8 days ago hydroponicly, hoping it will help expedite the process. I have about 25 of 50 already sprouted. Might be able to get them out the end of May. Not ideal, but grateful I'll still get something.
Also the seed starter mix I made up apparently had a component that was tainted, like an animal got into it. After a few weeks, my newly germinated seedlings began to die off, like they had been poisoned. I started smelling a strong ammonia smell. Welp apparently an animal peed in my seed mix or a component of it. Over 200 seeds/seedlings done for. Had to throw them out and the starting mix. Obviously that set me back too!
Mrs. H, I feel your pain!
But you know, I just kept working and kept doing. I was frustrated and really bummed. But I know if I don't plant it I won't have it. I'll do my diligence and have faith God will provide and work it out for me. Mrs. H, we're gonna be ok. Just keep doing, God will come through and provide!

I'm still struggling trying to learn to grow a few plants in south Florida, (a few of each, peppers, tomatoes green beans and zucchini) if it's not bugs, it's squirrels, if not squirrels, it's iguanas! Or heavy rain. I'm 64, disabled on ss with no help. I've added peppermint, onions, garlic lavender, marigolds lemon balm to ward of as much as I can. I'm going broke trying to sa v e money.
