It's so good to see and hear from Meg. The dear sweet baby sister, Elizabeth Rose, arrived about 3 weeks ago. I'm so glad Buggy has a baby sister, and I'm so happy for her. Good balance for the 4 boys. They've been such fabulous big brothers. I never miss the Hollars, especially seeing Meg's cooking segments & and I love seeing Ben on the podcast with Jason & Al, too. In case you can't tell, I'm a huge fan of theirs! 😂

So happy to see you and Meg chatting! Both your channels are two of my favorites. :)
About raw milk, Google is mostly false info in my opinion. We had a milk cow back in 1976 and we loved the cream as well as making butter and cheese. I got pregnant and asked my Dr. about drinking raw milk and did I need to get a pasteurizer. He told me, "absolutely no pasteurizer. That kills all the good stuff. If you drink raw milk within a few days, you are good. If it sours a bit, make yogurt or cheese." I LOVED that answer. A couple of years later we moved, sold the cow and got goats. Our three kids were raised on goat milk. I just eat what God has given us to eat.
Great video. There are fear mongers when talking about growing your own food and even butchering your own food and that info comes from people that have never done it. As long as things are kept clean, it's all good. We feel so much better growing and eating our own food and cooking from scratch.

I love watching both of your channels! I am past child bearing age but do appreciate hearing different perspectives. I had no ultrasounds with my first two pregnancies in the 1980’s but did have 3 with my 3rd pregnancy in 1995. I never thought a thing about it either way. Fast forward to my life now - I am sonographer, working in a OB/Gyn office with almost 14 years of experience. When I think about how my doctor in the ‘80’s told me that he doesn’t prescribe ultrasounds for his patients unless he suspects there is something wrong compared to today’s thinking of we do them to make sure all is well, it kind of blows my mind. Even though most things go right with most pregnancies, which is such an absolute miracle, I have found many anomalies over the years. These findings help prepare some parents of what life may look like after delivery; others have been able to have life saving fetal surgeries, resulting in a positive outcome. Most of the time though, parents can know that all of the structures I look for have a normal appearance. Ultrasound is not a form of radiation - this is something some folks are confused about. There have been many studies done and it is very safe, using high frequency sounds waves that are above our level of hearing. If I can’t hear them, baby can’t hear them. The only risk I am aware of is something called thermal cavitation, where certain settings on an ultrasound system can create a heating of the tissue if misused or used over a prolonged period of time. Because of this, an ultrasound technologist should take a conservative measure to not utilize this setting when obtaining fetal heart rate under 14 weeks of gestation. Waiting for the heart to develop to a certain point is important at this stage of cardiac development. This, along with using the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle, goes a long way in protecting these precious babies!
Sorry for the lengthy comment - I am very passionate about my work & the babies I see!

    • @EveryPeachInReach

What studies have been done to show it safe? I can't find that information anywhere. It looked like the last time anything had been documented was back in the 90s

I have seen a midwife for all 3 of my pregnancies. Heartbreakingly, we found out our first baby was a boy at a 20 week anatomy scan and that he had anencephaly - a fatal birth defect. We had only had an 8 week ultrasound to for dating to get due date before then. It wrecked us. He was stillborn a few weeks later. Because of that history, I was conflicted with my 2nd and 3rd pregnancies about whether or not to do ultrasounds. I'm extremely conservative with that, but we decided to do a 12 week NT scan and 20 week anatomy scan for my 2nd and 3rd pregnancies because we wanted to make sure baby was developing. Ultrasounds for baby 2 and 3 triggered major feelings of PTSD and anxiety breakdowns for me, but ultimately I was grateful to have a little reassurance. After our first, I dove deeply into nutrition and natural pregnancy education which I believe helped us have two subsequently BEAUTIFUL births for our daughter (#2) and second son (#3). It was through those experiences I've learned the MAJOR importance of taking methylfolate (instead of synthetic folic acid) and choline, paired with magnesium to prevent birth defects - especially for those who have MTHFR mutations, such as myself. After baby #1, I insisted to have my genes checked even though my midwife said knowing MTHFR status wouldn't make much of a difference. Let me tell you, it did! Taking steps to detox and supplement according to those needs made my other pregnancies soooo much healthier. Thank you for ultrasounds techs who have compassion for when scans aren't showing the norm. The body language and words chosen in those moments have more weight than you realize. That bedside manner and words used can be burned into a woman's memory if her most excited moment is crushed. Those are vulnerable moments.

In 1990 my first child was born with gastroschisis. I knew something was wrong because he hardly moved at all. I begged my doctor for an ultrasound to see if there was something they could see. He refused to give me one. He said I wasn’t high risk and that was the standard back then. My son went into fetal distress and I became septic before they finally gave me an emergency c section at 36 weeks. My son had meconium and respiratory issues. I had septic shock. I was left in the small town hospital and my son was life flighted to the big city hospital that could provide the care he needed. I wasn’t able to see my baby for several days and had to sign an AMA form to get discharged so I could drive 4 hours to the city where my son was hospitalized. Multiple surgeries! Extensive hospitalization. Trauma for both mama and baby. By the grace of God my son is now a healthy man without any issues, but if I would’ve had an ultrasound we could’ve been prepared for his birth. I am very natural and don’t recommend much intervention, but I do think ultrasound can have its place. My other 5 children were born without incident and I did have one ultrasound with each of them just to be safe.

I do agree that I am the most tired in the first month of pregnancy. I never thought about it much, but I have not been pregnant nearly as much as the two of you (since I have only three kids). Oh man, the listeria thing was always so interesting to me about eating lunch meat while pregnant, because with my first, I had pre-term labor contractions when 25 weeks pregnant, and they gave me a turkey sandwich at the hospital when checking the contractions (which thankfully I birthed him at 41 weeks instead). I was like, "Why are they giving me this when the same hospital warned me about listeria?" haha. I have never heard of the situation with ultrasounds, but it does make sense.

Oh man, in my first pregnancy, I was living in my husband's country where dairy isn't a big thing. You can get some milk and yogurt, but at the time, I didn't like milk (former vegan, but it took a long time to get over milk fear even after I went back to meat). This pregnancy, over 4 years later, half my diet has been my raw milk, reputable cream cheese (at one point I was eating almost a pound a week during the worst of my food aversions), every other type of cheese (from raw milk), butter by the bucket. I have been a dairy fiend these past 5 months.

Ultrasounds do come with risks. The main one is that it affects hearing.
The noise level during an ultrasound for baby is the same thing as being inside a train tunnel. That’s why babies move away so much during ultrasound.
My midwife said since they came out with ultrasounds, hearing loss went up by 300%. That’s why hearing tests are mandatory for newborns.
    I enjoyed the interview.

I got exposed to toxoplasmosis in between two pregnancies (probably from taking my oldest to a baby forest school and eating something that had been in touch with dirt). I think it's what you said, if you know anyone who had a negative experience with a certain thing, you will probably be more careful. For me it is the cat thing. Our family have had cats for generations, but my grandmother did get toxoplasmosis when pregnant with my mother and as a result my mother is almost blind. Otherwise, I was glad I could eat something, because of severe morning sickness throughout my whole pregnancy, so I didn't worry about things that might "not be good" for you for whatever reason. If you think about it, how have women get through pregnancy for thousands of years without these eating restrictions. Sometimes I feel that society has become so based on fear and preventing things that our bodies simply can handle less because it's protected too much.

Ok, I know the number 1 cause of deaths to raw cows milk is Listeria...very very rare...so why not go for raw goats milk which doesn't carry Listeria? Plus it's easier on our digestion? We went for raw goats milk which my children tolerated but they couldn't tolerate the raw cow's milk. Plus raising goats is freaking cute! And you don't have too much milk overload and they will clear your land of brush, if you have that problem.

I have a question: why are youtubers/podcasters who choose to live a traditional rural life, refer to themselves and their lifestyle as homestreading.
Homesteading was about times in history when the govt's encouraged people to go to uninhabited lands and develop farm lands. For about a dollar, they would be granted a quarter section of raw land, with the stipulation being that they had to do so much in a given year to garner the title. Depending on the jurisdiction, they could often apply for more land with the same development criteria - part which included having children. Original homesteads were often started with a simple one room log cabin or sod shack that was year one. The next year might be to either clear or break land, and so forth. Those were seriously rough tmes - especially where there are siginficant winter temperatures to consider.
Anyway, that's my two bits 😊

I'm always confused about cutting stuff out when pregnant. If it's not healthy/ safe enough during pregnancy, how is it healthy/ safe enough anytime else. If you avoid things because they make you feel worse, that's great. But how is it harmful to your baby more than it is to yourself

    • @amyjones5660

Because in early pregnancy, cells are diving and making organs, this process of developing a human should be interrupted. This is why there are diseases and meds that should be avoided, these can interrupt cell division.
Think back about the thalidomide babies of the late 50’s. This is an extreme example but explains why it is worse for a developing fetus over a non pregnant person.

One thing that occurred to me listening is that breast milk is raw milk. I haven’t heard anyone suggest that it be pasteurized (God forbid!). So aside from doing your due diligence about the dairy that produces it for cleanliness and health of animals-raw milk has all the goodness God puts in it. Pasteurized milk is what should be suspect.

Unfortunately, many locations that accept donated breast milk for infants in hospitals actually do pasteurize the breast milk prior to giving to the infant.

I live in a suburban area where there are feral cats always using my raised garden beds as a litter box…is the food unsafe to eat? Because I can’t keep them out no matter what I do…

I’ve had 7 pregnancies. 2 ended without a viable outlook. One at 9 weeks and one at 5 1/2 months. Even before those two outcomes I still worried more with each one. Was I pushing my luck in the chances that I would have a baby with a health problem. Luckily all five children were born perfecting healthy.

Hi Lisa and Meg. I'm lactose intolerant. I saw something on TV while back about A2 milk possibly being easier for us intolerant folks to digest. I understand it comes from A2 A2 milk cows . That said, any idea how hard it is to find someone who has a A2 A2 cow, and purchase a gallon or 3 of the milk?😊❤

Thank you. I'm looking for raw milk so I know it's freshness.

I have raw milk sitting out clabbering right now for the first time ever. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it works. No pasturized milk for me and I am a retired ICU RN. I am also a very unconventional nurse and make my own meds.

I clabbered raw milk, it was easier than yogurt and then I used it instead of milk in baked goods. Yummy.

Karen here. Alot of Homesteading families have lots of children. Can you help us understand why? Returning to agricultural lifestyle of years gone by? Religion? Going back to an Amish lifestyle? Help us understand. Seems like a lot of work. You all work so hard.

We had a lot of kids in a small suburban home when schools shut down in 2020. We moved to 10 acres partly for the benefit of the kids. So many suburban/urban problems disappeared when they had enough room to run and enjoy being outside and raising animals. So much of the toxic views of children are a direct result of toxic city culture. They truly are a gift and a blessing in our lives.
