    Yes biggest negative is shedding. They are the most attentive, loyal, loving and protective dog. Be prepared for sadness at the end of their life. Even when they are dying they will continue to look over the owner. If I would go away for work overnight they would become so sad. I'm ready for another shepherd. The best friend ever.

    I use to own 4 of them at a time. They hate being left alone. One weighed 165 lbs. His father was a war dog. No one would have made it back out the door if they came in. They usually have one person they gravitate to. All our dogs were healthy. And loved to play. No vet bills. If your going to get one you need a pure breed. We had a tri level. We put an iron gate up a l so they would have the lower level when we left. Came home one day and the 165 lb one had taken the gate and peeled it down all the way. They are brilliant dogs.

    They are also very good talkers. Definitely not a first-time dog owners best choice. They'll usually can't handle them and give them up to the pound. But if you have the time and you've had dogs before there's not much better dog you can choose. They just require a role. They love having a job!

    Know your breeder, many health and behavioral issues are from dogs not being breed properly

      I have a male and femaie GSD. The male is the offspring of a world champion show dog. The female, I purchased from a cute photo on the Internet. The pedigree male has been much more of a challenge to me than the female that is much more submissive.

    I have had y GSDs. All came from German stock. They didn’t have medical condition. I did socialize all of them and used trainers. I have owned them from age 45 to 77. They have all been great dogs. I have used daily dog care; I also use an open ranch on my rare vacations. Now that I am a widow, I really like my dogs. They are my best friends, and no one will break into my property. Yet they are friendly with neighbors, children and other dogs. I own great vacuum cleaners and do brush them. They are smart and even my most lively boy had adjusted to my reduced behavior. I do plat fetch every day.
    I wouldn’t encourage a family to get a GSD as a first dog. They do require training. Buying from a long time breeder of high quality dogs solved my health issues, as all my dogs died of old age.

    German Shepard are not for evil people. They thrive in love attention and inclusion in the family. They are too smart to be neglected.

    Mine must be broken. Unless 4-5 walks a day for somewhere between 1.5 to 2 hours in total is considered a lot. She very rarely barks, not even once a month. Super well behaved, very loyal, very attached and she's my best friend. She's had several mammary tumors costing lots to treat but there's no option but to reward loyalty with loyalty. I'd rather live in a tent than give up on my goodest girl.

    This title is weird, because it’s literally what EVERYONE will tell you about owning a GSD.

  • @samwdavis

    Look... do GSDs like a lot of activity? Sure. BUT... is that one of their fundamental NEEDS?? Absolutely not. I'm an elderly balanced trainer with 2 GSDs, one a show line, one a working line I'm ashamed to admit that I rarely take them for walks. They get VERY LITTLE exercise outside of our backyard. YET... somehow, without mile-long rollerblades.... they are EXTREMELY well-behaved and obedient dogs. I've trained a LOT of dogs of various breeds, and yes, there are some minute differences, but for the most part, dog training is dog training. It is NOT about the breed. It's about human vs. animal. My GSDs get VERY little physical exercise.... it's not fair to them, but that's the way it is. YET, somehow, they are EXEMPLARY pets. Go figure!!! It's because I understand them as dogs, not humans. I fulfill their animal instincts beyond their imagination....MUCH more than the positive-only, force-free trainers that only FAKE their feelings for their dogs. Dogs need 1) Shelter, 2) Food, 3) Security (which requires a STRONG pack leader), ,4) To be part of a pack.... PERIOD. Notice, affection doesn't appear anywhere in the list. The affection is for YOU. It's not for the dog. The information being distributed about dog training is SO SCREWED UP!!! STOP screwing with your dogs by hugging them, and start giving them their DEEPEST desire which is to have a strong pack leader.

      I’d love to have one that isn’t constantly in need of exercise. That’s why I have not gotten another one.

  • @margaretstutts4362
    @margaretstutts4362 2 дня назад +1

    Do not get one for your first dog. They really do require some high levels of training and exercise. They are constantly asking for attention. Obedience is required. Shedding. Aggression may arise if not exercised and not home. I had one. I’d love another but I can’t do the exercise anymore. My uncle had one. I was 7 or so. I ran across our den. He chased me and almost bit my foot. It was scary. But I understood. I ran. You can’t act like prey when they’re around. They have a very high prey drive which is breed specific. It’s a herding breed. It thrives in police work because of their drive. It will not thrive unless you give it a job. I’m not saying you can’t but I don’t recommend it.

      My GSD goes to the dog park for 1-2 hours daily. Aside from taking trips to stores etc. I have a yard they guard. Other than that they do have an off switch and are pretty chill the rest of the time.
