I saw this in NYC and it was really fantastic. Totally unlike any musical I've seen. Christine Ebersole was wonderful. If you have seen the whole show with her in it you have some idea the magnitude of the the role. This is only a small piece.
I feel sad that Little Edie never found true love, she had so much to give, such enthusiasm, vitality and an enchantingly childlike joix de vivre which was never satiated. By the time her mother died, she'd developed such a distrust and cautious approach that she continued to distance herself from most people, which is a real shame. These women weren't crazy at all, just non-conforming eccentrics.
I re-visited the Grey Gardens DVD yesterday. I think the beauty of Christine's performance is that she didn't try to impersonate or mimic Little Edie in every respect (her speaking voice is fairly different), but nevertheless perfectly captures her spirit.
Actually in the documentary scene upon which this number is based, little Edie is wearing all black. Don't worry, she also has a number with the American flag in which she is decked out in red. Both Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson as Big Edie are scary good!
I saw the play in Boston a few months ago. It was quite good. Would love to see the musical. The movie was great also, I think drew should have picked up a prize for her performance.
You mean Harvey Fierstien. Yes, he was the original Edna Turnblad in the Broadway musical of Hairspray, althouth sainstskittles is right in saying that Divine was Edna in the original 1980s movie and that Harvey Fierstein was in 'Mrs. Doubtfire'.
Like nickbigd said, the scene in the film where Little Edie is describing her "revolutionary costume" she wears an ensemble similar to what Ebersole is seen wearing in this clip. However, it's a dark brown color, not black.
If you want to see a totally awesome Little Edie impression then check out Jinkx Monsoon on Rupaul's Drag Race, the Snatch Game. You will be impressed I promise!
Dummy: It's a musical. I HATE musicals, however, this (and the other bits I have withdrawn from this site) captures more dialogue and spirit from the Maysles doc than I ever dreamed possible. I, for one, am delighted. Let's just hope that the Hollywood version DOAs.
I have my bachelors in piano performance and pedagogy. Man, is this piano score difficult to execute. We recently performed this at a local theatre. I was Gould Strong and actually had to play some on stage...but the pit orchestra/rehearsal piano part..Haha! Just look at the pianist go in the back. It was difficult but a blast. I love this musical. So many memories.
Wow - I've put off watching this for a while; I was afraid they'd ruin the amazing movie and characteurize the two Edie's, but I can't believe how great Christine is.
You people know NOTHING about musicals. Just because it's a musical doesn't mean the story is used for laughs, there are plenty of genuinely tragic moments in the show. Even this number isn't MAINLY about laughs, as much as about Edie's personality and fashion sense.
The accent is a little off (too tight, and the medial R's are too strong), but the cadence is dead on. But why doesn't she wear a bright scarf? I haven't seen the production but little Edie always wore bright scarves.
@WLKCONSULTING The reason these women were so unique was because they came from a wealthy, socially elite background which they rebelled against, you cannot compare their story with any other and your attempt to play the 'race card' is inappropriate and cheap.
Actually in the documentary scene upon which this number is based, little Edie is wearing all black. Don't worry, she also has a number with the American flag in which she is decked out in red. Both Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson as Big Edie are scary good!
so happy she won the tony i love her
hey ariana
This comment is like a fossil
I love Ariana's love of theatre
hey ariana!
Little Edie was absolutely thrilled that they were making her life story into a musical. She wrote about it.
Fabulous, I saw this on Broadway twice and can't wait for it to open in London, Christine ebersole is awesome
the voice is spot on
Holy Crap! Christine Ebersole totally nailed Little Edie on the head. She is fabulous.
living on long island, i can tell you that's exactly what we sound like
UNBELIEVABLE !!!!

Her performance is SPOT ON, lol!
Pure genius. Christine Ebersole is the queen of Broadway.
i love this show!!!!!!!!!
I saw the show in New York. Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson were GREAT!!!! If you can, see the show when it opens on Broadway!
The transition she makes from Big Edie and Little Edie is amazing.
WOW! She really captures the essence of Little Edie. Too bad she's not alive to see this. I'm sure she'd get a kick out of it.
this documentary is awesome.
Staggering! Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson make GREY GARDENS the triumph of the Broadway season. If you haven't seen it: GO!!!
Christine Ebersol nails it!!! Perfection.

The woman is brilliant. Christine Ebersole wins at life.
this woman needs to star in the movie!!!!!!
what a flawless actress...she's so real

fucking AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
I wish this was still showing in NY. Waa.
Imagine if Edie got a hold of Multiples...those pants, shirts head band skirt things...from the 80's
This actually makes the movie more understandable.
I saw the play in Boston a few months ago. It was quite good. Would love to see the musical. The movie was great also, I think drew should have picked up a prize for her performance.
OMG she does look like her~ and sounds like her as well~
I'm soo gonna see this! Da da da da dum!
I Love it!
Never to be equaled.

This song has the melody from YOUR FAULT from INTO THE WOODS
Like nickbigd said, the scene in the film where Little Edie is describing her "revolutionary costume" she wears an ensemble similar to what Ebersole is seen wearing in this clip. However, it's a dark brown color, not black.
my my aren't we the expert!

its a shame little edies not getting royaltys on this..the jokes and quips are little edies own words! rip miss farmington!

Does anyone know if Grey Gardens is coming back on Broadway? I never got a chance to see it and I really want too!!!!!
little edie was so tragic her mother ruined her life, but she let her mother do it
At 4:00, in the bottom left hand corner of the screen, is that Jim Dale??
A sobriquet is a nickname or a fancy name, sometimes assumed, but often given by another.
staggering
were you involved with the workshop?
This reminds me of Acorn Antiques. Why?
"It's a mean nasty Republican town" (cut to unamused Republicans) haha
beautiful voice, don't i dont understand the words.. :$ she speaks to... to... how do you say that? understandable?
Wow - I've put off watching this for a while; I was afraid they'd ruin the amazing movie and characteurize the two Edie's, but I can't believe how great Christine is.
It's rare that tere's real acting (which means living it) in musicals. It's usually this heightend 'let's break into song and dance' bullshit.
Little Edie is no longer.
sadly
You people know NOTHING about musicals. Just because it's a musical doesn't mean the story is used for laughs, there are plenty of genuinely tragic moments in the show. Even this number isn't MAINLY about laughs, as much as about Edie's personality and fashion sense.
um... Little Edie is a born and bred Long Island girl. What's your point?
The accent is a little off (too tight, and the medial R's are too strong), but the cadence is dead on. But why doesn't she wear a bright scarf? I haven't seen the production but little Edie always wore bright scarves.
Sondheim didn't write this.
Once again, Hollywood is on crack.
Unfortunately Drew Barrymore will be little Edie to Jessica Lange's big Edie.
Shut up. It actually sounds a lot like her... o.o
Just watch the documentary. This is naff.
The voice is nothing like her !
@WLKCONSULTING The reason these women were so unique was because they came from a wealthy, socially elite background which they rebelled against, you cannot compare their story with any other and your attempt to play the 'race card' is inappropriate and cheap.
I'm a huge GG fan, but I do not like Christine Ebersol's interpretation at all -
THE MOVIE GREY GARDENS WASNT .... it should have been a play... musicals are garbage when they do shit like this
sucked? hopefully more of your life is continually stolen throughout the day. this was excellent singing.
I agree. Mental illness is not something campy or funny like the NY freak theater world seems to think. How sick and exploitive.
i really didnt like this. i feel bad for luittle edie. but i guews people will make fun of unqie individuals
you no that's kinda sad--there making fun of little Edie----no like.
JAGG KOUT Its shameful
Little Edie knew a musical was being made about her life and was excited about it. I don't think she would've taken a whole lot of offense from this.
BOOO get a job
White Privilege - Tim Wise
Where's Drew Barrymore when you need her? This is TERRIBLE
Eileen D I Agee ! They are making a mockery of the Beales .Little Edie was a great gal. this makes me sad.
she doesn't get the accent right. drew got it right. CE's is just annoying.
"Naff"? I'm assuming you are British and have not had the joy of seeing this. Ms. Eberseole's performance is anything but "naff."
Just pathetic...ugh
