I've commented this before on some Grey Gardens videos, but I'll say it here too: Just remember one thing, Little Edie never reached that high point of fame that she wanted, like being a singer or dancer or just a performer, but thanks to this movie she IS and always will be famous people know her, people identify with her, and she got to perform some shows in New York (even if the reviews weren't that good). She became somebody, even though she deserved to be more than just somebody.
These women are oddly haunting and comforting at the same time...could watch Grey Gardens and The Beales of Grey Gardens ten million times...oh wait, I already have...

I really love this trailer. There's no voice-over. This mysterious, magical, bygone-era style music and the images all speak for themselves. It entrances me.
Drew Barrymore acted and sounded EXACTLY like the real Edie. The woman has been overlooked for awards for years. She has an unbelievable talent for seeing into people and bringing their truth, pain to light.
The Oscars are only for theatrically released films. Drew deserves an Emmy, Golden Globe, and whatever else applies -- she was PHENOMENAL in this role. I don't know when I was so touched by a performance. Just incredible.
What I love most about this story is that they were both true survivors. Basically they'd been pretty much abandoned and I also read that part of their poverty came from a male relative stealing much of their money, leading to their financial demise. But heck, they seem happier then lots of people I know, even living in such destitute squalor and with hardly anyone to help save them. The survived and they found reasons to smile. I love both these lovely women...
@@sharksport01 one of big Edie’s sons paid the taxes. And the lights, sewage/water….which wouldn’t have been much considering they only lived in 3 of the 28 rooms of the home. Who knows about the groceries…government assistance would be my guess unless big Edie still had a small bit of money from her bouvier inheritance left. I know she wrote the checks because I watched the documentary….like 6 times lol
Seemed Big Edie & Little Edie got food stamps thru Lois Wright for them. I think when Mrs. Beale died, Jackie helped her cousin to pay for water, electricity & food allowance for 2yrs. I guess Bouvier Beale still living in NY at that time paid the property taxes after Jackie O. tru Onassis' money paid the clean up expenses. Phelan Jr. obligated his younger brother Buddy to persuade the 2 Edie's to leave the estate. Phelan Jr. said something like these: "All the entertainment, partyings & her coming out debut was like The Great Gatsby and The White Elephant (Grey Gardens) ruined it all".

My father, who composed beautiful, romantic 50s style jazz, was quite the eccentric and he, too, stayed in our rundown but beautiful home until his death. A collector of antiques for 30 years, he packed the house to the gills with his beautiful possessions. I took care of him at the end of his life. I understand Big Eddie's inability to let go of a home that meant so much to her. Fortunately, I have been able to let things go (to a greater extent than most would ever imagine) when necessary.
Elizabeth Faraone , I love people like your father and the Beales. Though the reasons may differ, they're true nonconformists, and to be admired. My mother was somewhat like that. And often, odd combinations of circumstances force these kinds of lives on people.
The reason they are so fascinating is because they had it all: priveledge, wealth, education, living in high society. When her ex husband lost most of his money during the crash, he stopped giving Biig Edie support. He never payed alimony. Their existence was a co-dependent realtionship. They survived somehow, even with their mental inadequacies, that is a hugh thing! So many people fall throught the cracks but do not survive. And they did it with extreme optimism!
Grey Gardens was an amazing documentary. “Little” Edie, unknowingly, showing the constant abuse by her mother, even into her adulthood. I cried for her. The constant guilt and verbal abuse was appalling. The Maysles showed Edie’s loving and imaginative personality. This is really a must watch.
Agree…Little Edie was like a captive of her mother…saddest woman I think I ever saw.I’m glad she had a little bit of happiness before she died. It so haunting at times, like stepping back into the past. The documentary was very good, have watched it a couple times.
I saw the film this weekend and I think that it did justice to the spirit of the documentary. The reenacted scenes of the brothers shooting the documentary are practicalley word for word, mannerism for mannerism. It is an astounding feat of acting prowess for Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange. The movie serves to tell more of the backstory of the documentary and help people understand how they got to this state. I think that if you watch the movie, you will see that it does justice to the Edies
@bholley925 She was scatterbrained, not schizophrenic. She wasn't used to having a camera in her face, 24/7 - her words were bound to be jumbled. Little Edie was eccentric, but perfectly sane.
True that, my late uncle was a friend of Little Edie back when he was living in FL, I saw a picture of him in her apt, I must say her new place was fancy to say the least.
Yes they were two wonderful women mother and daughter who relied on each other. And lived and survived in a World of their own and had happiness that they created.
It's brilliant, in a sad, emotive, revealing, and intimate portrayal of two woman the likes of which we shall not see again, get taken into a forgotten time and place and marvel at their take on the world, a true rags to riches in reverse but with such human warmth and emotion, i will never tire of watching this amazing documentary.........
My favourite part of this trailer is the part where you have the shots of the beautiful New Hampton mansions with their perfect facades and manicured lawns - and then you get Grey Gardens, which looks dead and haunted. It's like a slap in the face. Great editing.
Yep, just look at the effect a negative parent can have on a child. Little Edie never had any self esteem whatsoever. Despite wanting to go out on her own she probably never felt she would be able to be good/strong enough to make it. Keeping a daughter around to take care of you is also a cultural phenomenon common in South America and elsewhere. Parents have the ability to handicap you for a very long time - in her case, her whole life. Very sad.
I enjoyed your comments and agree with you on so many points. I too, fell for these fine ladies many years ago and continue to be enchanted by them. I do think they were both highly disfunctional and were codependant to an extreme. The fact that they were upper class,(and still owned that huge mansion) and somewhat famous at the time would certainly disqualify them from any assistance either public or private. Big edie could have sold the place basically and had money left over.
I think southerners are more familiar with situations like this. Often it is two aged spinisters living behind the ivy covered walls of some grand home, now derelict, barely getting by, but still the pampered aristocrats they used to be inside. It's always a fascinating and sad story, worthy of Tennessee Williams. Little Edie had something to offer the world, but a domineering mother clipped her wings, then spent years deriding her daughter for not really accomplishing anything. Tragic, she was so interesting, and obviously creative.
The documentary highlighted the "banter chemistry" between the two women that the film done about them missed. Still worth seeing the film though documentary is best.
i wish i could see the actual documentary. i saw the film starring jessica lange and drew barrymore. it was pretty good. i identified a lot with little edie, and her shattered dreams of making it as a performer. hit home a lot with me. great story, great women.
I highly recommend getting the cast recording of the Broadway show. I would say go watch the show but unfortunately it closed. I think it was brilliant. It's supposed to open in London again next year. Hopefully with the same cast.
marvellous documentary, saw it recently. For the privileged, it's eccentricity. For the poor, it's squalor. It's bickering amongst the foliage and the undergrowth, but I enjoyed some of the social and musical reminiscences.
Elizabeth, I agree with you and thank you for pointing out many things that would have never thought about even though I have seen the documentary, play and HBO movie many times. I do think that their family had no use for them on so many levels and sadly, big & little edie couldn't really take care of themselves. They never had to and didn't know where to begin.
I think their story was amazing. I was explaining to my 12 year old words cannot describe this movie. We are dealing with different individuals who had things happen to them and never let it get them down for long. I know it was unrealistic for you and I but everyone does not think the same and this story was trajic yet so interesting
wow. I bet, showing the depth of your caring, compassionate personality, the two would have not turned inward and become reclusive. If we all showed the same amount of understanding and compassion as you.....there would be no depression or insanity....no use for psych. medications or therapy. Thanks for showing some of what they may have been avoiding in the first place. Oh, and if you don't get this....it is sarcasm.
Their family missed out by abandoning them. They were so funny and such "staunch" characters and they added a richness to the lives of others. Many of Little Edie's insights are dead on. These women grew up in times of great restrictions, racism, elitism and sexism and both rejected these values. I loved it when Big Edie commented, "Well, at least someone's doing what they want to do," as the cat peed behind that beautiful portrait of Big Edie. Where is that valuable painting now?
I saw the movie at an arty (where else?) showing and was fascinated/depressed by it. These two ladies are...different, but seemed to enjoy their lives. I am eager to see the commercial picture.
I just bought the DVD on ebay. Can't wait! I read the biography of Black Jack Bouvier a while ago. Of course Jacqueline Kennedy's family was a little insane! She was the seeming "perfect" one. yah.

Are they making a movie about their lives though? I don't think they would remake a documentary but I can see why people would want to make a film based on the lives of these gorgeous souls.
It was terrible that her ex husband gave his own wife so little money to live on knowing that she could NOT live on that or keep the house up. But I guess that was his point.
Just imagine the live little Edie could of had if she would of married well after her debutant coming out party. She could of been married to one of the wealthiest men of her day.
Don’t believe any of this nonsense. There is absolutely no way they lived in that house all those years without paying taxes! It would have been sold within the first year if they didn’t pay taxes
After the 1972 🏡 clean up, seemed Bouvier Beale (living in NY) was the one who got forced to pay the taxes so that the 2 women could still stay in the estate & no choice too but to pay Big Edie's $800 unpaid bills w/c was send to him at that time.
I would love to see ALL sixty hours of footage because I would like to know them better. By the way, I'm both elizabethfaraone and ThatCrazyGirl99. I had too much to say and You Tube limits the amount of times you can comment.
Big Edie messed everything up, she tried to control Little Edie all her life (today it would be abuse) she messed Little Edies audition up, she messed her marriage up, she messed her relationship with her boyfriend up, she even managed to upset her ex husband who gave her an allowance and had originally left her a lot of money in his will, but she messed that up by upsetting him so badly he changed his will just before he died
Phelan's Old Money by the 1930's has problems already & when he died...his money was left only to his 2nd wife. Phelan once wrote to Big Edie while Little Edie's in boarding school not to tell to Edie Jr. that they're poor now because it will rob all of her joy. So Big Edie ask help tru Major Bouvier for the estate's expenses that her father gave $3,500 yearly as financial assistance of Grey Gardens w/c at that time there's a household staff, a driver, a gardener & a pianist to pay for those wages in the mid 1930's. In Bouvier Beale's 1942 wedding, Big Edie came half an hour late & dressed like an opera singer that Major Bouvier didn't like her daughter's dramatic behavior...changed his will after 2 days. The $65,000 trust fund in the condition that Big Edie's 2 sons will be in control of it & only $ 300 monthly support for the 2 Edie's. Major Bouvier instructed his eldest son too to take care of Big Edie but according to Little Edie...her Uncle Black Jack put The Bouvier Money only for Jackie & Lee.
I wonder why her father threatened to have her committed. I wonder if he knew she was strange and wanted her to go home to keep her away from the world.
The ladies were cheated out of the money made by the director and producers. They should have been paid enough to make exposing their misfortune worth their while.
i think its a shame that she doesn't. she was cremated and he ashes are by her mother at holy trnity church in east hampton. i think themaysles brothers should have at least helped
As for the HBO movie: I didn't like the director's style - the "same ol', same ol' " American movie formula. I would like to see a film that actually uses all of the footage taken by the Maysles with actors to fill in a well researched story of their past. The documentary will always be a special one, but I don't think the HBO movie will be remembered.
i dont understand this. what was wrong with the mother and daughter? and what happened to them? little edie was pretty but whats that thing she's wearing on her head?
I completely agree about Little Edie. When she tells them that someone told her that she was schizophrenic, they, like a lot of people, tell her it means split personalities, which is not what schizophrenia is at all. You can definitely tell by the disorganization of her speech and how quickly she can change from one subject to another, extremely unrelated topic that she was most definitely schizophrenic.
schizophrenia is not that easy to diagnose. unless your a psychiatrist its not very likely you could properly diagnose someone as schizophrenic just my they way they talk or act. it could be number of things.

Just imagine the live little Edie could of had if she would of married well after her debutant coming out party. She could of been married to one of the wealthiest men of her day.
I was never clear why her sons left them so destitute.
Does anyone know which version of tea for two this is?
A shame to the male relative and the husband to choose the wrong trustee.
Did I see just see cornholio? lol 1:54
Big Edie and little Edie, The aunt and cousin of Jacqui O
i think it's less of a matter of "no talent" as it is a matter of lost opportunities and undrawn potential.
why doesn't little edie have a headstone at the cemetary?
Yeah Vanessa Carlton brought me here too lol..
The same way the raccoons carved out their walls.
I wonder why her father threatened to have her committed. I wonder if he knew she was strange and wanted her to go home to keep her away from the world.
Ahhh when wealthy, mental illness is poetic
what song is that?
We're they paid any money for their work
Little Edies hair fell out after her attempt at a dancing and singing career fell short. She never left the estate after that.
The ladies were cheated out of the money made by the director and producers. They should have been paid enough to make exposing their misfortune worth their while.
The beautiful Bouvier's, the mad cousins of Jacqui O,,,,, rock on ladies ;-p
Well one is on their own watching that...ditch the music and talk...LOL
What version of Tea For Two is this? Anyone know?
Liberace
i think its a shame that she doesn't. she was cremated and he ashes are by her mother at holy trnity church in east hampton. i think themaysles brothers should have at least helped
107 seconds in + little eddi was a man too female
"opening February 20"
Does anyone know the year?
Deborah Barry , 1976
You can definitely tell by the disorganization of her speech and how quickly she can change from one subject to another, extremely unrelated topic that she was most definitely schizophrenic.
bholley925 , nonsense. You don't know a thing about it.
so why does everyone like this movie?
Vanessa Carlton? Anyone?
Wait, where are the Raceless demons and angels living in harmony together?
schizophrenia is not that easy to diagnose. unless your a psychiatrist its not very likely you could properly diagnose someone as schizophrenic just my they way they talk or act. it could be number of things.
