Gas ported pistons have been around for a while, but Total Seal now offers gas ported versions of its piston rings. There are many advantages to this design--both compared to gas ported pistons and non-gas ported rings. Yes, ring gaps will stay the same and base them off your specific application on the chart supplied by Total Seal or your piston manufacturer.

Nice info. Just one historical note: early ‘70 is a little off the mark, say be a half-century? The use of combustion pressure to exert radial pressure and push low-tension rings against the bores has be thoroughly documented by Harry Ricardo in… 1924.
