You're right I had to do that, on my 740 I was able to remove the oil separator without removing the manifold because there is no EGR on the 86' 740. Without the egr you can snake a long extension and swivel socket in between the intake manifold to get at the bolts.
You need to remove the intake manifold to access the egr and box removing the pipe from the exhaust manifold,Steve uk.
