After almost 5 years: The X70 is still my favourite camera. Used many, many other cameras in the time. Especially interchangeble lens cameras like FS5/FS7, GH5, LS300, BMPCC4K etc... At the end, the X70 is the camera which gets the shot when i want. I see something, grab the X70 and shoot. Its not shaky. Its not out of focus. Colours are good. I get the right focal length in every situation. The X70 is responsible that i got more clients and jobs. Not the other cameras everybody is shooting with. I think, because they are too slow and cumbersome with changing lenses, screw on ND-filters or rigging up, put on a gimbal etc. The right tool for the right job, of course. But X70 is almost everytime the right tool!
set the EV to -05 to 07 outdoors. Use the Zebra stripes @ 100. The single sensor will blow-out the bright areas so you may want to assign EV to any of the outside button. I chose #5 instead of the auto iris button which duplicated your auto Iris on the right sde of the camera. PROFILE SETTING: Also you can mix ITU705 with Cinematone1 plus add +3 to your saturation for an outstanding look.
Okay, some wishes as i wrote on xdcam-user: The XAVC Codec is unfortunately a bit weird to handle, but i think that gets better soon with support from the NLEs etc. If VLC can play it in near future, then its arrived.. :-) Some issues i discovered and wishes to next firmware: -Simultanious recording of different codecs. One card XAVC, the other AVCHD for example would be great. - Why not a userbutton to shoot a photo? Its a videocamera but sometimes its usefull and the specs should allow stunning photographs (20 MP chip?). Even if the Photos would be only 8 MP (4K). Great option would be pressing the joystick to take a photo if not in menu. - Let the auto-/manual focus button be a free userbutton. I always use manual focus! - Let the auto on/off of the EVF/Screen be configurable. Its very weird sometimes if a hand or a shoulder activates or deactivates the EVF. - Let me decide if the cam auto powers on by opening the screen or pull the EVF or if i have to push the power button. If i just want to take a card out of the cam i dont want to power it on! - XAVC Codec has 4 Audio Channels. Let me decide to record internal mic or minijack to CH 3/4! And Ch1/2 as i select on the handle. Okay, i think thats all for now... maybe not. THX Sony for read! ;-)
Can you explain how stills are supposed to be taken? I've gone over the manual and looked online and have yet to see anything aside from picture profiles and it seems rather tedious that there is no still photo option while shooting videos
Sticky Insides Unfortunately, there is no option to do that until now. I hope, that will be possible in a future update. i think, its not a big problem. ( in the thumbnails you can choose between XAVC, AVCHD AND Still Pictures since the first day... )
Thanks! In fact some people called me the "human tripod"... :) But i have to admit that the active steadyshot is really really good on the x-70! Combining it with smoothly breathing, pressing the arms to the body and the Viewfinder to your eye, its very effective.
SuperRaven79 I just loop a piece of strong (nice looking) string around my neck and tie it to then handle; then when shooting (via the LCD) hold the camera so the string is taut (so the camera is about at waist height); then do a practice motion of where I want the shot to go (position my feet so it isn't awkward); and I have a pretty smooth shot without a tripod.
Okay, just had time to set cam up and do a few test shots in prep for another one of my ed. videos. No sound on purpose. All manual. Some color grading and image sharpening in post. I'm sure I'll find more to experiment with as I progress, but the cam looks like it will be amazingly useful to me. The audio is clean--not beautiful, but pretty low noise, and can be improve in post. Perhaps of most interest is about half way through I included some video recorded through HDMI off the sensor by a ninja 2. Of course, this is all on a tripod. nthing exciting here but the comparison of avchd with the Ninja recording quality. what do you think?
Okay, i just installed the 4k option. If i get the time, i will upload a short testmovie. As for the 60 Mbit issue: I activated parallel recording and proxy recording. At this side of view its still a good compromise. If i´m not wrong in this case the camera records around 140 Mbit in 4 files and 2 codecs at the same time. So i can understand, that the AX100 has less work with 100 Mbit in just 1 file. But still it would be nice to give the option of 100 Mbit recording on the x70... And the possibility to set a button to shoot a photo!!
it has some wind audio , i mean when watching the cat i hear some noise come from the wind , but you have to export to XAVC-intra then u can watch it easily
I have owned more than 14 Sony cameras in the past 20 years. So, as a tremendous Sony fan, I say this with enormous respect for Sony and it's engineers; The proposed 60Mbp/s 4K PXW-X70 XDCAM upgrade falls well short of ALL other 4K camcorders in the industry. This is not my "opinion", it is simply a researchable and proven fact. No other manufacturer (Panasonic, Canon or JVC) is using below 100Mbp/s in their codecs today. (not even the lowest cost 4k models) In fact, no other Sony 4K camera uses below 100Mbp/s,..not even the lowest entry level Sony Handycam. Even the Sony 4K ActionCam uses a 100 Mbp/s codec. With this 60 Mbp/s 4K upgrade, the PXW-X70 will sit at the very statistical bottom of the industry camcorder list. (in terms of codec bit rate) In my humble opinion, I believe that it is vital that the PXW-X70 professional market XDCAM be given at minimum of 100Mbp/s 4K codec. Doing so will at least "match" the bitrates of all other entry level consumer market models, industry wide. No Sony "XDCAM" branded camcorder should ever sit far below it's HandyCam or ActionCam cousins in terms of codec bitrate. I dont expect the next PXW-X70 paid 4K upgrade to include a 100Mbp/s option this month. However, I certainly hope that Sony will at least make an official announcement of their commitment to do so in the near future. Again, say this as a VERY loyal long time customer. It is not my intention to flame, insult or otherwise "put down" Sony or the PXW-X70 here. In saying the PXW-X70 is at the bottom of the industry in terms of codec bitrate, I'm simply stating an odd, strange and embarrassing fact. Please don't let this camera sit at the bottom of the 4K camcorder industry bitrate list. Sony,..please commit to raising the bitrate to at least "match" the common entry-level consumer 4K bitrate standards of 100Mbp/s. Longtime Sony fan, Cliff Totten
Cliff Totten Hi, i´ve seen a video from NAB, were a sony guy explain the problem: The X70 have more features like proxy recording, streaming, MXF recording which all needs processing power (in comparison to AX100). He said, thats why the x70 only records in 60 Mbit. But in my opinion, its okay. The Pictures looks great and you have more space for storage.
SuperRaven79 This is actually good news if this is the case. Sony can keep all of those functions available in shooting 1080 as it does today. In 4K, Sony can simply shut down the functions (like streaming and proxy recording) and make those disabled so that they don't interfere with 100Mbp/s 4K recording. If disabling extra features is needed to achieve entry-level, cheap consumer 4k codec bit rates, I wouldn't not complain at all. 60Mbp/s looks "ok" on slow moving scenes. However, on complex moving scenes, it breaks quickly and it cant be graded to any real extent. This is why even the cheapest consumer camcorders from Panasonic, Canon, JVC AND Sony...ALL stay away from 60Mbp/s...literally NOBODY uses that in ANY of their 4k cameras.
Skyward Digital Media Creations Jup, that is a good idea. Let the shooter decide if he wants proxy recording or streaming. Sony should just add the 100 Mbit option without that features... So you can choose between 60 and 100 Mbit.
No audio...really Think I will sign today for the camera. Own the AX100 so can match them up at an event if needed. Have a great weekend. Stay focused!
I think an exposure compensation of -1.0 EV is warranted but would keep a straight exposure in low contrast scenes. You can recover shadow detail in high contrast scenes but I think you want the greatest amount of dynamic range to work with where there are no areas of highlights.
To Nguyễn Quý Bửu Thọ: are you saying you have Adobe CC 2014 and you can't hear the audio unless you convert the original MXF to another? Can anyone tell me if MXF files can be opened in CC2014 without any issues? I received my camera but have not opened box yet. Thanks for your time.
Okay, Raven, you asked for me to share X70 footage once I got something up on youtube. So, here it is: japanese gardens ft. worth tx, shot with Sony PXW-X70
Hello again, I have the UPS man coming tomorrow to deliver this camera and may refuse because the .MXF 422 50mbs file that this camera generates will not open in Vegas Pro 12 and 13, FCP, and Adobe Premiere like 5.0 and maybe 5.5. Did this camera come with any software named Catalyst Prepare please? This looks like a great camera but What was SONY thinking to launch a new camera and not have the software to edit it like SONY Vegas 12 or 13? Downloaded a free version of Sony's Catalyst Browse but only exported the MXF out to web video as mp4s. Optioned to export out as another MXF but doubles the file size of the original. Am I missing something here? Downloaded Sony's content browser (30 day free trial) and seems like any export options were grayed out. Was there any software discs or a free download flyer in the box? Thanks for your time.
hey i got premiere CC 2014 but i dont have this camera to test the import thing idk if MXF can import into premiere CC 2014 plz any1 try to import in premiere cc 2014 and let me know it work or not ?
A few questions I have for you, Raven, s'il vous plait. Is this video shot in AVCHD codec, or in long GOP? If it was in long GOP then what NLE did you use for editing? People have complained their NLEs cannot process LongGOP, and they have to shoot in AVCHD. That doesn't bother me, since I'll record HDMI using a Ninja 2. I'm sure that eventually the codec issues will be solved. What say you?
Bonjour William! The Video was shot in AVCHD. But of course i tested the XAVC Codec too. And the people are right, seems like the codec is not fully arrived yet. I CAN work with it in my NLE (Lightworks Pro), But the Audio Channels are switched (CH1 on Cam is CH2 in NLE) and Picture and Audio quickly gets asynchron in the timeline. BUT ONLY IN TIMELINE, if i export the timeline as movie - its okay. By the way, AVCHD is LongGOP too. Both Codecs uses h.264 LongGOP. And yes, i think the codec issues will be solved in near to middle future. As i began to shoot with Panasonic AVCIntra it was the same. Took some time until it was a "standard" codec in almost every NLE... I experienced that EDIUS is a great NLE in terms of supporting new codecs. And a good program in general. William, are your satisfied with the cam? What are your experiences?
SuperRaven79 But almost every program can handle AVCHD- files. XAVC is another thing, the codec seems to be a little bit weird... Lightworks can open it and the sony content browser too (but not direct from the card, you have to copy first and choose then the folder on your drive.) But the audio channels are switched. Ch1 on Camera is Ch2 on file...
Just one more thing, I've owned a Sony HXR-NX70, which had a lot of wonderful features, but I was never happy with the image quality and many other things. But I'm assuming the PXW-X70 is a camera of another order in terms of image quality and sharpness, with a much better sensor, better processing and a much larger single sensor than all three of the sensors on the NX70 combined. Am I correct in these assumptions from your perspective?
Hi William! Thanks for your input. Unfortunately i had not much time until now to work with the cam. And i never used the NX70, so i cant say anything about the difference. What i can say so far is: The pictures of the cam are very very crisp and clean. Even with 21 DB gain it looks very good. I did a small job on the oktoberfest, for that reason i bought the cam. I hate the attention from drunk people with a shoulder-cam.. :-) And i didnt want to shoot that with the GH3, because the handling is just too bad for run and gun in that circumstances. Not to forget the mic-inputs etc... Just more comfortable to work with the PXW X70. If i find the time i will post a short roughcut from that shoot with talking heads etc.
SuperRaven79 Thanks for such a quick reply. So far from what I see I'm very impressed with the X70--really a very different critter from the NX-70: a very good cam, but not in the league with the 1", 4K sensor, and the internal processor looks like it is much better. I like the results I get with DSLRs, but the form factor makes me crazy--I guess I've just shot with camcorders for too long and have gotten too spoiled. Sooo...I broke down and bought a new X70 after several days of mulling things over. Really thought about buying an EX-3, but there were too many negative--things I can avoid if the X70 fits the bill. Would love to see your Oktoberfest footage. I'll look for it--and subscribe! Danke viel Mals!
William Ridenour Gongratulations to the cam! I think you will like it. EX3 is just too old... ;-) There is one thing i didnt think about so i have to dissapoint you, im sorry. It was a paid job and i guess i am not allowed to put something on RUclips from the Oktoberfest footage. But now you can make your own tests, so I AM looking forward to see something from you! ;-) Gern geschehen und viele Grüsse!
So, you've had about a week to work with the cam since publishing this. I'm impressed with the footage, but I'd like to see some faces and how sharp they might be in interview situations, etc. I'm thinking about buying this, or the EX1, or EX3. But I like the newer technology, the HDMI/SDI outputs, and the SDXC/SDHC cards instead of the 2X2 cards. Do you have an opinion on what I've written? I've bought a lot of video equipment, but I'd really like to try before I buy. I note you're also the owner (and user) of a GH3, as I am. How do you think the X-70 compares?
Thats a typicall pxw x70 job: ruclips.net/video/zTVnOrf2rvU/видео.html Perfect size and shape to carry over the whole tradefair, WITHOUT tripod. You can zoom in and out "on air", smooth. You can do an interview with relativly nice Bokeh, if you want. Its not fullframe 5D or so, but its also not 1/3 inch style handycam. PXW X70 is a mix of both worlds. But i have to admit that its nearer to a "video" look than to a "filmic" look. But thats all straight of cam with no correction!
Okay, i have to admit that some shots at the beginning (between 0:33 an 1:00, the Award sequence) are from a colluege with a NX5. But i think these shots looks not as good as the x70. A little bit too bright and "different". All the rest is X70.
I can absolutely recommend the PXW-X70 to you. Very powerfull at the pricepoint. If you wanna buy one, i recommend to buy it with the 4K option already installed. Maybe it costs 300 more, but then its future proof and you dont have to do the very complicated 4K-option-install process... ;-)
Raven, Grüß aus Amerika! Just FYI I've found a free Sony app. that transcodes Long GOP XAVC into .mov pro res like a champ. You can download it from Sony's site here: www.sonycreativesoftware.com/catalystbrowse It also has great edit software....When you pull your XAVC footage into it click on one of the clips. The clip will appear in the top right corner (your right). Below the clip you'll find a "help" button. Click on it to get info. on how to use the application.

Just a short comment: I discovered for me, that the picture profile 4, PP4, (both ITU709) looks very good to me.
Okay, some wishes as i wrote on xdcam-user:
The XAVC Codec is unfortunately a bit weird to handle, but i think that gets better soon with support from the NLEs etc. If VLC can play it in near future, then its arrived.. :-)

Sticky Insides Unfortunately, there is no option to do that until now. I hope, that will be possible in a future update. i think, its not a big problem. ( in the thumbnails you can choose between XAVC, AVCHD AND Still Pictures since the first day... )
Wow, you must have very steady hands!
Just can't wait for it to arrive and start using it for extreme sports and interviews...
Okay, just had time to set cam up and do a few test shots in prep for another one of my ed. videos. No sound on purpose. All manual. Some color grading and image sharpening in post. I'm sure I'll find more to experiment with as I progress, but the cam looks like it will be amazingly useful to me. most likely will have to get CC2014

Excellent! Thanks for sharing. Have one on pre-order.
Thanks! And gratulations to the cam! I think you will like it.
No audio...really
Think I will sign today for the camera. Own the AX100 so can match them up at an event if needed. Have a great weekend. Stay focused!
I think an exposure compensation of -1.0 EV is warranted but would keep a straight exposure in low contrast scenes. You can recover shadow detail in high contrast scenes but I think you want the greatest amount of dynamic range to work with where there are no areas of highlights.

open it :D , XAVC can easily open and edit in Edius pro 7 :D, open and film some 4:2:2 footage and post it i want to see your :D

awesome camera ♥ thanks for thise nice HD Video !
CAN YOU GIVE THE SETTINGS OF THIS VIEW WHICH WILL HELP US TO GO FORWARD OR LEARN
Nice footage 👍
Not sure if there was audio
Will check at my end
Give me an hour
ok let check ! tell me how it going .

what software to import and eidt file of pxw x70 ?
I use Lightworks Pro.

SuperRaven79 so Lightworks Pro can import XAVC ?
Nguyễn Quý Bửu Thọ Yes and you can dowload a full functional free Version of Lightworks. The limit is the export to only 720p mp4.

There's a user called 'TheVideoWhisperer' with an X70 review including what you ask for regarding interviews.

Thats a typicall pxw x70 job:

Perfect size and shape to carry over the whole tradefair, WITHOUT tripod.
Maybe it costs 300 more, but then its future proof and you dont have to do the very complicated 4K-option-install process... ;-)
ja die Artefakte liegen wohl an RUclips! Ansonsten sehr gut.
Raven, Grüß aus Amerika! Just FYI I've found a free Sony app. that transcodes Long GOP XAVC into .mov pro res like a champ. You can download it from Sony's site here:
www.sonycreativesoftware.com/catalystbrowse
It also has great edit software....When you pull your XAVC footage into it click on one of the clips. The clip will appear in the top right corner (your right). Below the clip you'll find a "help" button. Click on it to get info. on how to use the application.
