    Storyline
The year is 1963, the night: Halloween. Police are called to 43 Lampkin Ln. only to discover that 15 year old Judith Myers has been stabbed to death, by her 6 year-old brother, Michael. After being institutionalized for 15 years, Myers breaks out on the night before Halloween. No one knows, nor wants to find out, what will happen on October 31st 1978 besides Myers' psychiatrist, Dr. Loomis. He knows Michael is coming back to Haddonfield, but by the time the town realizes it, it'll be too late for many people.

70s movies like Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Black Christmas are the bread and butter of the “slasher movie”. They took the bare essentials of Psycho, Frenzy and Peeping Tom and turned up the violence and horror atmosphere. The “slasher” genre never really improved on these 70s movies. Though there have been some good ones here and there post that decade.

Have to agree with you about dogs. I get sad and bummed out when a dog or any animal is hurt or killed in a movie too, definitely. Pippet, the dog from Jaws...I was always relieved that at least all we saw was that stick he had been fetching, floating in the water and his demise from the shark was not shown. When you commented on the girl from Halloween who said she was the only one that the german shepard didn't like and you said, "That's because you're a bitch." YEP! Ha ha, agreed! ;)

Even though many consider this the start of the slasher genre of horror films, I feel that Halloween has a certain element to it that puts it above just being a mindless slasher. One scene that comes to mind is when Dr. Loomis is talking to the sheriff in the Myers house about his experience with Michael. That monologue he gives at 14:46 is just amazing to me and really legitimizes this movie.

The neighbors we've had for the last ~30 years or so had a son who was.... very unstable as a child in the '90s. I don't know if he had something going on or what, but once he hit his teen years he suddenly disappeared because he was apparently sent to a facility a few hundred miles away.
Back when I was a kid, there was one night that this teenaged girl came running up to our front door, pounding on it furiously and screeching, _"PLEASE HELP ME LET ME IN!!!!"_
    We did, of course.
It was that kid's babysitter. He was about 8? at the time and had _chased her out of the house with a huge kitchen knife_ just like Michael in this movie, and I really do think he would have hurt her if she hadn't made it to our house.
When the parents got home and, of course, came to our house to retrieve the babysitter, my dad told them what their son had done.
    The mother's response?
_"Oh, that's just his little saw."_
    FUCK THE WHAT _EXCUSE ME??_

In 1975 William Shatner did a movie the "Devil's Rain" in it they did a special effect with his face, so they made a life cast of his face and used it for props. When the film wrapped up, they used he cast as a negative for "Captain Kirk" star trek masks. In 1977, Producer tommy lee wallace wanted a mask on the cheap so he went to a hollywood Costume shop and bought three masks, one a childs clown mask (in he beginning of the movie) a Sad clown Emmett Kelly mask (abandoned) and a kirk mask prop master, cut the sideburns/eyebrows off, fwipped the hair, cut out the eyes and spray painted it Krylon "Applianace White"

Later in movies they make all the story why, etc. But as stand alone movie I always think of stalker behavior plus psychopat and we have Micheal.

I have to mention one of the most baffling troupes of this era was the dead body suddenly swinging in view of the camera. While it is a good jump-seater, I could never visualize how a rampaging killer would look around for a rope and make a rather complex harness to pull this off. And then where would the harness be attached in a closet, the light bulb? Never made any sense. Same goes for the floor to ceiling scribblings of madness that became popular in the 90s and 2000s. I mean you would need a ladder and some great artistic/tagging talent and penmanship to pull that off.

Ryan, Digging your style on these reactions! This movie is vastly different than all of the remakes and cash grabs the "Slasher" films of nowadays have become. Amazing how a shoe-string budget can force one's creative flow to produce a suspenseful masterpiece like this.

Love your reactions. Always good for a laugh. I do believe the breathing is basically a natural outcome of what someone actually sounds like in those masks. Of course it's slightly exaggerated, but if you have ever worn one of those old 70s plastic or rubber masks, you can relate.

I recommend Black Christmas (the original from the 1970s) as another really good slasher film. Everyone has heard of Halloween, but Black Christmas doesn't get nearly as much recognition, and I personally think it's just as good.

I love Black Christmas - so underrated. Another great flick is The Sentinel (1977), I only saw it for the first time this year, and I was like, “How did I miss this?” (The cast alone blew my mind.)

    • @philrob1978
      @philrob1978 2 года назад +1

Oh god yes, Black Christmas is brilliant - it's not only creepy but really funny in places. The progenitor of this genre really.
But I don't think Halloween fits within the slasher genre at all, it is very much its own thing and is a masterpiece of suspense on a very low budget. Ignoring the awful sequels (apart from Halloween III) is for the best. John Carpenter was saying something here, an evil that can not be stopped. By not naming it in any way, it becomes the boogeyman, or whatever legendary evil force you're familiar with. Where is he? Hiding in the shadows.

While I give the movie itself high marks, I personally find Michael Myers boring and I think that he doesn't deserve the cult following that he has.
Fun Fact: All of the actors wore their own clothes, since there was no money for a costume department. Jamie Lee Curtis went to J.C. Penney for Laurie Strode's wardrobe. She spent less than $100 for the entire set. She shot the film while on hiatus from the sitcom Operation Petticoat (1977).

This is one of the greatest movies ever made. It's in the American congressional film registry. 801 films on that list out of millions made, and it's to preserve the original print of the film as it is deemed culturally, aesthetically important to American pop culture. Part 2 continues on the same night, right after this one, so you might as well see that one.
I love the ending as Carpenter had no plans for a sequel. The bad guy wins when they show loomis looking down and his body is gone. Then they show all the places he's been to with his breathing getting heavier, implying he could be anywhere, everywhere, or nowhere, as carpenter said he wrote him to be the actual boogeyman that you can't kill. He said he is a human, but he has a slight supernatural edge. There maybe no other movie where the soundtrack adds so much. They showed this to studio execs without the soundtrack, and supposedly it was so boring, that the execs were pissed how shitty it was. Then carpenter showed them the movie with the soundtrack, and they loved it.
Also people think the horror stereotype of doing drugs, have sex gets you killed started here, but both debra hill (the person you are seeing the movie through her eyes in that beginning and her hand to get the knife out the drawer, and carpenter's business partner and GF) and carpenter both have said it's a coincidence that the people doing drugs and fucking get killed, they had no intention of any sort of message. Hell Laurie smokes weed.

None of the sequels are necessary viewing, but if you find yourself wanting to see more Michael Myers, the most highly-regarded sequels are Halloween II (1981), which picks up immediately after the first film and finishes out the 1978 murder spree; Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988), in which Myers returns to Haddonfield exactly one decade after the original massacre; Halloween H20 (1998), in which Myers faces off against Laurie once again on the 20th anniversary of their initial encounter; and Halloween (2018), which picks up 40 years after the original film and sees Michael returning to Haddonfield as Laurie prepares to take him down once and for all. Jamie Lee Curtis appears as Laurie Strode in each of these films except for Halloween 4, and Donald Pleasence returns as Dr. Loomis for Halloween II and Halloween 4.
