ALWAYS enter turn-based mode before attacking when out of combat. Your actions/bonus actions will refresh. Its 8 attacks before the enemy turn. I had the bad habit of moving my charchters than attacking but than they dont have an action point when they enter combat. Now I always enter turn-based before attacking and get 2 attacks instead of 1
One of the best tips is while your main character is talking to someone, and you know a fight is coming. You can switch to your other characters and set them up in the best positions for the coming battle, and once it starts you have the advantage.
GTFOH that wouldve saved me so much trouble in the nere fight. thanks!
They call me the paladin, protector of the weak and collector of barrels.
There is a nice combo. Use gun powder or grease before setting it on fire then throw poison to detonate the fire zone once again.
Ooooohhh, I didn't know poison would detonate... noted!
@@kelleren4840I learned that by playing divinity
Another tip I'm abusing is having your ranged character (or character's) carry three wooden boxes in their inventory. Whenever I can't get to a high ground, I go into inventory, righ click --> drop the three boxes, stack them on top of each other and right click --> climb up. Portable high ground. With Sanctuary you can even do this in the middle of combat.
Wtf. Sometimes I feel to stupid to play this game.
@@joseaviles4780Don't. I learned that strategy from another video. I am still trying to fully wrap my head around combat myself.
I trie this trick all the time! But how the f..can I stack them of eachother! Every time I stack the second box.Explode that box.( Of course I use empty boxes) No barrels! Play this game on my laptop/ esktop!
@@Portawolf I put all three boxes on the ground next to each other and then I drag them onto each other. No box has exploded on me so far. I've seen videos of people doing towers of like fifty boxes.
@@PortawolfAre you holding a flaming sword?
It's over Anakin! I have the high ground!
This was hands down the best combat tips video for BG3.
One thing that lot of people don't realize is that you can use water or grease to reveal invisible enemies, including throwing potions next to invisible enemy. You can also throw some potions to do effect as long as you throw potion next to character you want and not directly at them. For example if you throw healing potion next to NPC, it will heal them because potion breaks and splashes.
Also, don't underestimate terrain control spells like web, or vine spikes, they can be insanely powerful especially in tight corridors where you force enemies to walk through. I easily killed those three ogres in blighted village at lvl 3, because I spiked the terrain and it took like half of their HP till they walked up to me.
Nice one on Sanctuary. I didn't realize how useful it could be! Barrelmancer is hilariously awesome!
yup I'm thinking to main Barrelmancer also.
Another great tip (that wouldn't work in 5e) - Spiritual weapon can be attacked, but has resistance/imunity to almost every thing - and the enemies sees it as a valid target, meaning if it's the closest thing to them they will all group up and attack it meaning your party is safe from harm. And while they are nicely grouped up you can AOE them down at your leasure.
It only costs a bonus action to cast ( and a 2nd level spell slot ), but unlike 5e it does cost *your* bonus turn to move/attack, it has it's own.
Insanely OP :D
True and I have not looked at it's armor but I've used it a good bit and it seems rather hard to hit. Great distraction spell that also does pretty good damage as well.
7:48 started a game with a group of friends, i took a cleric with command and one of the others had a barb. got to the helm where the mindflayer is fighting the demon guy.. commanded the demon to drop his flaming greatsword. barb snagged it and we ran out if that fight. saved a shitton of time trying for the sword. lol
Nice, I was unaware that grouped party members were all handled in a single turn. I'd seen the enemies doing that now and again but never figured out why. I just assumed it was a pack ability or something. This is really useful so thanks!
Maybe next time I won't lose my whole team to a frog...
Take out the hag before talking to the frog, and you get some loot from it. Just make sure to have Talk To Animals active. In fact, have at least one character using it at all time when animals are around. It makes things interesting at times.
Another thing with Grease is that it seems to break concentration, which can be very helpful.
That entwined turn order tip was a new one for me....Great info
I don't know if I learned it intuitively or if the game tells you at some point, but it was one of the first things i learned.
People complaining that this game is "too complicated" have clearly never played a paper and pen tabletop RPG XD
This game is the closest thing to the chaotic nonsense a DM has to put up with as the players conspire to derail the entire campaign
You’re right we haven’t and yes it is much more complicated than most other video game rpgs and does a terrible job teaching you to play
Honestly, it's strange how it's simultaneously more simple/streamlined and more in-depth/"complicated" than most other modern CRPGs at the same time. Like, take the Owlcat Pathfinder games, for example (mainly because I'm very well versed in both of them), the leveling, classes, gearing/loot, and several other systems are more "complicated" than BG3, sometimes by a significant amount. But when it comes to _how_ you can do things, and just the sheer amount of options, variety, and freedom afforded to tackling the game's problems, be them combat, questlines, or exploration, or gearing up and getting supplies, BG3 feels like it's lightyears ahead of the Pathfinder CRPGs.
It does certainly feel more like real D&D, especially with the game's ability to work with you and kind of go with the flow no matter how you handle things and just figures out different ways for you to "do the thing", like any good DM would be able to do, rather than railroading you or getting upset that you're "going the wrong way" or that you "killed the guy who could tell you how to get into the dungeon/castle/crypt/etc" or whatever other thing players might do to subvert the DMs plans.
That last one is the best, I have done this before battle, but not made use of it in battle there are so many times Astarion goes first, and I might be able to get someone next to him for sneak attack. But I do in general need to use the environment more. Sometimes I remember to dip my weapons, or look for barrels or a brazier to drop on someone, but usually it's after the battle that I am like, I could have used that.
Dipping is 1d4. Hardly OP
Thanks for the advanced tactics! Never played a D&D game before, takes some getting used to.
Top notch advice. Not enough views on this.
Sanctuary tip is insane, thx!
Very helpful and information was delivered perfectly so I liked and subscribed, thank you.
Great video, thx💪🏻☺️
Real tips: Kill rather than talk: more xp. If you get xp from talking then kill, you will get more xp than one or the other. Pick up everything, you can easily walk out of act 1 with more than 10k gold 20+ AC and fantastic weapons. Use cantrips against weak enemies. Prioritize shield spell and other AC boosting spells for your spellcaster, they get targeted a whole bunch and are easily killed. You can jump to gain extra ground to either get to or away from enemies. If youre having trouble with a big fight and you can prep before hand, place oil/smokepowder barrels where enemies like to group up.
Let me know if anyone else needs actually good tips
Also, if you're playing a foghter class with the reaction riposte, you can use this to your advantage against weaker foes. If you run out of actions you can walk out of the attack area, your enemy gets an opportunity of attack, and since they are weak they are more likely to miss, giving you an extra attack through the riposte
your comment is better than that whole video.
Real tip; Some people actually roleplay in roleplaying games.
Until you got hit with a 7 miss streaks with 65% hit chance
I both love and hate how Gale has become my Grease monkey. 😅
This video has the best tips, good work my dude
Wow…this was so helpful… I am all the way to act 3 and I didn’t know half this stuff
Great tips, thank you
I've learned as long as I'm carrying 5 oil or smoke barrels I'll b alright no matter what
OMG! This video is a WEALTH of info for someone who has never played this kind of game before. Thank you!!
Deopping a candle to dip your weapon for fire damage was such a good idea.
Really incredible video! Thank you so much!
Thanks for that last tip! I missed that in the interaction but it explains some occasional oddities I was seeing.
90ish hours in full release and 40 from early and i definitely learned a thing or two in this! Thanks dude
90 hours already! Lucky. I'm only at 45. I NEED MORE TIME!!
Great video as always, thanks
Thanks Firespark!! This saved me a lot of time and some hair😅
i didn't knew about last one !
thanks
this helps a lot! thanks
I’m right at the end of the game and have never used poisons, or many otherPotions except for health. I hope that on my next playthrough I’ll be more interactive with my options.
Great stuff! I'm a BG3 newb and this was quite instructive advice
Wow, you just changed the game for me. Thanks!
same
Omg the candle one.. holy
nice info, i'm new to this game and totally digging game but i'm really not turn based minded as i like to mash buttons in mmo's so its really hard for me to see the environment and variety of actions and how to make them all work to win a battle ... my major victory for me was trying to figure out how to fight the three leaders in goblin camp without pissing everyone off at once at lvl 3. in fact that's when i figured out that if your in a battle (like around the three goblins bickering outside hasin's door) and if you want to eliminate those three goblins, what will happen is the goblins and drow boss lady will also be alerted and join battle so because i could not escape battle for some reason i managed to get everyone in hasins door during battle, once everyone i was inside i could rest or teleport or whatever then come back to camp to pick more controlled fights and no one was the wiser ...
Good tips!
Very helpful thank you
Command prone is also super OP. While the enemy is prone they can't do anything and all attacks from within 3m have advantage. Great for nuking a boss/miniboss with Lae'zel and Karlach.
The Sanctuary tip was very useful. I don’t know if I have it but am going to get it asap!
I'm totally new to this game style so your tips are constructive. I managed to defeat the ThreeGoblin Leaders which was quite a challenge but I'm enjoying the change from FPS-type games.
Great Video!
awesome tips thanks
A candle from your inventory is enough for dipping material
The part about using actions on close party groups out of order was especially useful
very good advice.
Excellent job 👍
Amazing tips
Always dip your weapon… words to live by 😂
I started off playing on the Hardest Mode they have, so I found out about the candle trick early. Also, as lvl3s, I was stuck on the fake paladins of Tyr for a while, until I made the main guy drop his sword with command. The fight became super easy after that lmao!
Wait til u do that with the steel watchers too! Command drop is soooo clutch sometimes barb going aggro and p much unkillable? Command drop 😂
very good tips
Very good information
Great tips.. I really liked the one about the Candle lol.. Weapon dipping can be overlooked it adds that little extra. I would also add that you should right click and examine your foe to see what they might have resistances to or are vulnerable to.
You can also mouse over them and hit ‘T’ on your keyboard
I use that all the time to know what type of Hex to put on them.
As a noob I found these tips really helpful 👍
Oh my GOD, that last one. I can almost never get a buff on my party because Shadowheart always seems to go dead last in combat. I didn't know I could just switch to her out of turn like that.
Yep me too, I was like how do people use buffs in this game and thought you needed to just get lucky to get you characters in good positions for combos. This is a game changer!
Just those first two tips alone are awesome and were things I didn't know (just got the game a few weeks ago). Now to watch the rest of the vid. Thanks for sharing.
EDIT: Just finished watching the rest of it and glad I did! I punched that subscribe button
These are good tips, but I just focused on build mechanics & party synergy.
Sor-lock-er (me, fighter2 warlock2 sorc8) Heavy armor, shield toting eldritch blast gatling gun (quickened spell & action surge, + CHA bonus + hex procs on each), oh, and then there's actual spells... also great social
Shadowheart (tempest) All the electric & wet, sanctuary & guidance abuse (guidance is OP af out of combat).
Astarion (gloom-sassin) So much alpha-nova, super useful pre-combat & out of combat skills
Halsin (moon druid) transformed creature hp is separate from character hp so it's like a massive pool of temp hp, some decent spells & utility in druid too. it's fun. Karlach could also be a fun choice for front-liner though. A fighter's AC is a bit unreliable, but a battlemaster for combat utility or EK for plate, shield (physical), and shield (magical) are sound. Tempest cleric can really create a no-go zone to make 'tanking' work well despite enemy AI looking to squish the squishies.
So I mean, these are really good tips. But build & party composition have a huge effect too. Halsin can go play with enemies as an animal, shadowheart makes a hellscape of electric water behind him, crazy ranged dps behind that... and if something gets past the cleric, sorlock can shove them back into the electric-play-time pool. And just all around great utility for a wide range of encounters both combat & noncombat.
I'm definitely going to try command to steal weapons from bosses though, that sounds hilarious.
I’m new to bg3 and that sanctuary one is op
I feel like I leveled up, myself. SUB'd!
Just started playing this.
Okay but why did you give Karlach the face of a ten year old in the thumbnail
To stimulate your neurons

Regarding the command „drop weapon“, picking up a weapon is not an action, you can pick up the weapon for free, but same goes for the enemy (they just won’t have an action on their next turn, for this is one of the effects of the command „drop weapon“)
The free action is pick something from the ground or put something, it could be a lot of something if you are not moving around, the thing that COSTS one actions is equipping your weapon. 😅
really informative
I went storm cleric/lightning sorc on shadowheart, stocked up on a bunch of bottles of water, fling one at target and chromatic orb will hit 30-40 at level 3.
I'm scared to duel class any of the companions cause they said changing their class could mess up the story.
@@Firespark81 She started as a cleric so will still get cleric dialogue. Might be different if I made her a ranger.
This really needs time stamps!
I`m quite new to the D&D genre and to BG3 ... so, for me, BG3 is still full of "rocket science".
You really didnt have to "cute filter" Karlach in the thumbnail. She is a beautiful warmachine as she is. And thats coming from a shadowheart lover
I have her head in my inventory
Nice video
the ones that have the high ground underestimate my power
"Don't try it!"
This game is so complicated I'm thinking maybe just watching someone is easier 😅
I'm not gonna lie, I'm struggling a lot in this game. Even though I'm struggling I'm having fun. This game is very unique.
Homer yells as he bangs on the door “Sanctuary!!!!”
Reverend Love Joy “Why did I teach him that word”
I dont like using the barrel method unless one was already next to a target. Too much like cheating.
Same with the candle method
Looking forward to playing on Tactician after I finish my current game and putting these tips to good use. Already thinking about all the times, I could have setup barrels ahead of time before the enemy was even mad at me (like the goblin camp). Could be a lot of fun now that I've gotten better at combat after playing a while.
Used the command drop on the enemy the mind flayer fights at the start of the game as a super cheesey but luck based way to get the sword and run
I’m 50 hours in and just learned the grouping thing
Command: Drop can be used by Shadowheart to fetch the Everburn Blade.
I’m guessing using poison is no longer considered to be evil as in the past.
Helpful just started on ps5 a complete noob
Me too, it’s hard to find help that tells you what buttons to press on the controller. It took me four days to figure out how to give Gale clothing plus mage armour without reducing it to 13! 😖
This video took me out of easy difficulty.
Sanctuary already was OP in the old games, but when you can cast it on another character, this will be insane!
In D&D you could always cast sanctuary on allies. It's an easy way to deal with broken lines and protecting fragile characters.
In BG1 and 2, a cleric could only cast it on themselves. Which was broken enough for a high level cleric or cleric/mage, as summoning creatures did not count as offensive action.
Changing Karlachs face unto some random instagram chick is just weird behavior.
Thanks!
I like the PC UI waaaaaaaaay more...
Imo, the radial wheels are unnecessary on console. Those are for speed, which you don't need in this game.
Could just toggle on and off of selecting your spells/attacks/etc as they're shown on PC' UI, with R1.
The radial wheel approach is a bit ugly imo.
radials can be a bit wonky but I don't think there is a better system for console. unless you go skyrim and just list them all on the left.
New player here a little confused. During the bit on sanctuary it says you can use your cleric with sanctuary to heal your melee character. It looks like shadowheart is using a cantrip but I can only see healing spells which would mean the healing effect is going to run out pretty quickly. Is there a way to heal without using up spell slots?
As you level up, you gain more spell slots and multiple levels of healing spells. Add to that that there are half a dozen items that let you reset spell slots. Running out is very unlikely. If you only use her for healing and buffing, you should be able to get through the longest fights.
One way to heal without spellslots would be the use of Healing potions. With Alchemy and the right ingredients you can make them yourself. Throw one of the potions on the ground close to the person in need of Healing and the potion will take effect on any friendly unit close by (means you can heal several people with 1 potion if they stand close enough together). Alternatively you can of course also drink the potion.
i swear to god this is an AI voicing over the video
The last tip about choosing the order when characters are grouped…..how do you select a specific character on console?
LT and select
So far op combat is "use bless" and "use frenzy subclass Karlach"
Pretty simple.
Karlach is a beast. I freaking love her. She hits like a dang truck. Give her the savage attacks ability to. So she basically always attacks with advantage.
Thenk youee, all the way from Neow Zulond 😋
Would love to do damage one day, if every attack didn't miss for me
Yea man I really tried to like this game. It's just way to slow for me. If my attacks didn't miss 90% of the time it might be a little better.
@@mritz579 Yeah, I wish there was a true easy mode where this stupid hit/miss problem was alleviated (e.g. you can't miss or something). I went through it somehow but the combat was anything but fun, it was a frustrating struggle all the way. Waiting for 25 enemies to take their turn while you just stand there and take the crits only to wipe at the very last turn bc you happen to miss... Who designed this, honestly. I know, DnD rules and whatnot, but this gameplay is just awful even on Explorer, and you really can't do anything apart from putting hours and hours into watching RUclips videos to understand wth is going on. How is this good game design? I'm not a hardcore gamer or anything but have played a few games in my life and never ever had an experience where combat was this frustrating.
I think you would watch some character design videos cause if you’re missing that bad you must have your stats allocated poorly
@tuckerroberts3953 I really love this game. Wish I was better at the combat and understood it more. I've been playing turn-based rpgs my whole life and can't really grasp what all the spells and abilities do in this game
Use bless before the battle in everybody, also learn about how accuracy works but use bless basically
Nice tips but kills the fun when you cheese the fights, I did some of this made the fights too easy.
yeah, sancurary is nice… until the enemy gets high leveled enough to counterspell you and ruin the whole thing. Most these tips are good at low levels (3 and lower), then it wont be as good as enemies will save vs the surfaces and the little da,age from a fire dipped weapon won’t matter much.
Wahwahwahbluarb
I see you've embraced the majesty that is cleric.
I found that rogue's many bonus actions is also very exploitable. Find a corner, hide, sneak attack, disengage if melee, hide again.
