Oh my. Is she ever clueless! Baking soda is a deodorizer? Add to ammonia and sniff. How’d it work? It ‘cuts through grease pretty easily’? It’s not a surfactant. Dissolve in water, add oil or grease of your choice and shake. None will dissolve. Vinegar cuts through grease? Well, my experimental bottle of oil and vinegar salad dressing hasn’t changed in over 10 years. Vinegar refuses to dissolve any of the oil. AVOID THIS NONSENSE!
Baking soda is a great deodoriser for food and mould smells. Put it in a smelly fridge and it stops the smell within a day or so. So it actually IS. Ammonia is a chemical smell, not an unclean smell. Use semi-moist bicarb on a cloth and it turns oily substances into soap. It doesn't have to dissolve in water with oil. Neither of your "tests" mean anything in the face if reality. Try it on the grease on your stove or in the oven.
