To sell any _wireless_ device, it has to pass various regulatory bodies for radio interference (FCC, and its non-American equivalents. I'm sure you can guess where I'm from.) This is extremely expensive and time consuming, and I've seen the process bankrupt several companies. Most of the wireless DIY boards you see use pre-certified modules, that are "plugged in" to the keyboards. The problem is that these plug-ins make the keyboard thicker, mechanically weaker at the plug/socket, and are not as reliable because of the many-pinned socket. Mechboards looks like it is going with a board that doesn't use the plug-in modules. It's the same choice that the open source Corne keyboard project went with for their v4 keyboard revision. Also: keep in mind: LED's are power hungry, and there's little room to put a battery. It's doubtful there would be much battery life even if you crammed in as much as possible.
