Yeah, for the kids out there that just don't know, Marino was truly epic. I'm a raider fan and have no love for Miami, but I have tremendous respect for Dan Marino. Not winning the SB is just a reminder that it's a TEAM game. He very clearly wasn't the reason the dolphins didn't win it all. Truly gifted and a great career.
True the dolphins had mark clayton and mark duper as good recievers but they didn’t have any good running backs and they didn’t have a good defense something don shula failed to realize
@@user-hk7gu8un2q He was drafted by the SB runner up that gotball the way there with a defense and run game that carried David Woodley.
Well spoken and very true . As a Jet fan since 85’ I can confirm that he was without a doubt as good as Montana, but didn’t have the same supporting cast AKA A Team sport . It wasn’t a cry baby league back then and players got ended in the most brutal ways, meaning, in todays NFL I’d venture Marino would have bigger numbers because of all the rules about protecting QBs now
In my eyes... he is the GREATEST to ever play .....the fact he never won a SB means nothing....he WAS THE FRANCHISE in Miami for 17 years....simply amazing talent
No it's just a reminder that he was a loser who choked in the playoffs
If Dan Marino was on the San Francisco 49ers instead of Joe Montana, he would have won 8 SuperBowl rings! 🏆💎
Sure buddy
That is absolutely a true statement. San Francisco had a pro bowl line on both sides of the ball and San Fran’s defense was elite throughout the decades of the 80’s and 90’s. Miami had none of that. All they had was Marino
Bill crap he would have been nothing without Duper and Clayton, yes Nat Moore too!
If any QB was on the 49ers instesd of Joe that QB would win 8 Superbowl rings, including me. Joe was in a fortunate situation, He was not very good.
@@heretolearn5084even Montana said he's the GOAT
Don’t care what people say, but Marino is the best pure passer EVER!!! The NFL is a pass happy league because of Marino. We would never had Brees, Manning, Brady without Marino.
He simply revolutionated the league.
Great video btw.
Sir please, knock off that pure passer thing.Like fastest quick release, it's a " stat " one cannot quantify. Fans have coined this about Marino to up his status . Those AREN'T stats. How about Juegensen, Namath, Lamonica, Hadl ,Bradshaw etc. Did'nt they throw good passes.
@@6400az Namath threw more INTs that TDs 😂...Also most QBs these days have to have a quick release and it IS something that is timed. Although not a "stat" it matters.
@@6400azMarina was better. And they had a good team around them and most of the time Marina didn't.
@6400az Marino>>> all of those you mentioned. Dan was a far better passer then all of those
No running game and bad defenses really costed him. He was clearly the most talented gun slinger the NFL has ever seen.
IF Dan Marino had a defense when he broke all those records, he would've won a lot of Super Bowls. To me, Dan Marino is the GOAT!
Possibly wins a Superbowl, but with a defense and or running game, then there is No reason to throw as much and no records !
@6400az If Dan Marino had the same team as Joe Montana, he would've won 6 Superbowls, and the GOAT wouldn't even be disputed, and that's a fact!
Just look at Elway, couldn't win with his team until the very end when the team finally added a great running game along with a great defense. Marino had neither.
@@chrishughes9399 nah joe montana was just more calm. smarter, more clutch and knew how to win
Joe Montana beat him, but Marino is my second GOAT.
He had a very strong arm, was insanely accurate, could throw with touch, could exploit the weaknesses of any defense (Including the 1985 Bears!) and despite being slow, he was rarely sacked because of that insanely quick release. - If I could choose any player in NFL history to start a team with, it would be Marino. Not Brady, or Montana, or Manning or Elway, or Rodgers, or Mahomes, or anyone else; *Dan Marino*
100 % agree
Any D-lineman from that era will tell you that one of the most immobile and slowest quarterbacks was also the most difficult to sack. His pocket presence was like a 6th sense and the release...that release is still unrivaled today.
I’m not saying Tua is better than Marino because he isn’t, but he actually has a quicker release
To even be worth mentioning in the GOAT conversation with no Super Bowls says it a lot
There is no way a quarterback can play 17 years and never win a championship and be the goat. That's a joke!!
@@marckellough529 Yet he has been an honorable mention in the conversation. It will never be an exact science to determine the GOAT. It’s really just by consensus that it’s decided. I don’t even really believe in a “greatest of all time” because there’s different eras with different rules and such. Brady certainly benefited from rule changes that increased a QB’s longevity and also benefited from being on some really great teams. Put Marino on Brady’s teams under the league rules that he played under and he might have more than 7. There’s no way to know
His 1984 season was not one of the best by a QB,It was far and away THE BEST season by any QB ever at that point!!
It even still is today!
I agree and ima Tom Brady guy, Dan Marino threw for almost 50 touchdowns, in the 1980’s, the 1980’s, like really, that’s the best NFL passing season for a quarterback ever
I agree. It would be like something throwing for 7500 yards today and 75 TDs and that's not an exaggeration
84 was the best statistical year by a QB. You have to look at what his competitors were doing at the time. He was doubling what most QB’s were doing.
Correct....Marino was a stat guy, not a winner.
Mark Clayton was drafted in the 8th round in the '83 draft along with Marino. Mark Duper was drafted in '82
Marino in today's league on a decent team would be a holy terror. His game was WAY ahead of its time.
As a dolphin and Marino fan I remember the heartbreak in each one of those playoff losses.
Dan Marino is the one reminder that gootball is first and foremost a TEAM game.
No running game, I believe he only had one 1000 yard back in his career, NO defense, Dan Marino had given the Dolphins a lead in 38 of his games in the 4th quarter, only to watch his defense surrender that lead 23 times.
In the playoffs, every team knew exactly what Miami was going to do, and Dan Marino still would pull it off,
Only to watch his defense let him down again and again......
Any one player can ruin it for the team.
Dude delivered modern numbers back when the NFL still allowed defenses to play real football
Exactly! Couldn't even imagine how well he'd do in todays game
Watching his career as it happened was spellbinding to say the least
Right. How did he manage to throw away or not come prepared for playoff games. Spellbinding. Waste of physical "talent". Not tough enough.
We were never out of any game with Marino he was the goat!!
Marino was the only quarterback that beat the vaunted 85 Chicago Bears defense.
If they'd managed to give him a running game and a legit defense, there's no telling how many Superbowls he'd have won.
In later years, the Bears faced him successfully by keeping him off the field with their running attack. Marino noted before each of those games, "the Bears have a great defense, I hope I can be ready for them."
Dan was the quintessential, class act, and a sweet guy that even as a bears fan, you had to love.
The Bears were rumored to have floated a blockbuster trade deal, which would've sent Neil Anderson, and a few other prominent starters to Miami for Marino. Had that trade happened, the legacy of the 80s Chicago Bears, would've been altogether different and they would've had another 5 Superbowls and Marino would've gotten his rings.
What if......
AS A JETS FAN SINCE THE MID 60'S I CAN VOUCH FOR DAN MARINO BEING TRULY ONE OF THE GREATEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's because the Jets are one of the few teams with less superbowls than the Dolphns. Both trash teams.....but at least they are better than the Bills.
If the Raiders had drafted him in that time period, Marino would have at least 3 rings, they a great defense in the 80s. Bo Jackson and Marcus Allen in the backfield with him, Willie Gault, Todd Christianson, Mervyn Fernandez, to throw to.
Damn look at some of those throws when he was in college, look just as good as some of his very best throws with the DOLPHINS!!AMAZING PASSER!
My family moved to Florida from England in about 89 and so I’ve been a Dolphins fan since. A lot of letdowns, but Marino was a shining light the entire time he played. He made things happen that had me and my dad jumping around the living room howling!
Excellent memories!
The best QB ever! I don't proclaim that without understanding there are 52 other men on that team as well as at least 8 coaches. I can say, if he was on the 49ers, New England might have caught up to their Superbowl mark. No one could throw the ball the way he did, until, Tua. His release after the snap is the fastest in the league currently, and they are just starting to come into their own. Seeing Dan hanging around Tua gives me serious goosebumps......
He is the best ever and even Joe Montana recently said that Marino is the best ever.
You can not be serious, Tua isn't close to Marino.
@@user-yt9vq8yb1nhe didn’t say that he means that tua is our QB since Marino but he isn’t Marino
@@bryangonzalez4604 Sounds a lot more like he's insinuating that Marino can teach Tua how to actually be a QB, which won't happen.
Boy, Marino in today's game with free running receivers, and QB protection rules......Dan was made for today's game.
He would have absolutely shredded the modern game in his prime. It would have been something to see.
@scottpoyer5678 , Seriously, what might have been.
It also begs the AFC Championship matches between the Dolphins and the Chiefs.
They would be epic.
not if it was the playoffs...he would lose like he did every single year. - ZERO SUPERBOWLS
@@9999deoxys , Wrong. They've changed the rules to favor the passing game. Marino would destroy the current passing records, including the playoffs.
He said as much himself.
He believes he would have passed for 6,000 yards in today's game.
@@davidgraham2673 What a surprise, Arrogant Dan said it himself. He had his change for a decade and failed every year. I would rather wear a Bob Griese shirt.
That is too bad not winning any SB. He was still outstanding.❤
I watched him on anygiven weekend while he played.
Dan was simply great! His passing skills were epic. I hope TVD from Miami will watch some of his film to get his footwork techniques.
How about some of his playoff loss techniques. every single year
He had probably the strongest Arm ever, and he had the quickest release ever. He has the lowest sack rate ever to this day.
think jeff george had strongest arm but that release def the quickest with strength.
The greatest QB ever, period.
Oooooh
delusional
@9999deoxys yes you are.
joe montana say he was the best thats good enough for me
two trash QBs
Dan Marino was a very talented young athlete when he graduated high school. Could have been a MLB player, but he chose football instead. The guy had the quickest release of any QB I've seen to this day and he could throw the ball down the field whenever needed. Always hear people try to down play what he accomplished because his team never won a Super Bowl. That may be true, but trying to use a TEAM TROPHY to judge the talent on an individual player, is asinine. Dan Marino IS one of the Top 10 QB's in the history of the NFL.
Give his receivers lots of credit too! Did you mentioned he gave the unbeatable steam rolling one of the best teams ever Bears their only loss in that season on Monday night?
Nobody cares about the regular season.
Saw him play in his first preseason game vs Dallas. Was clearly David Woolley’s quick replacement.
Only QBs get blamed for not single handedly winning a 22 man team game.
Even after all these years, I don't think I've ever enjoyed watching any football player as much as I did Dan Marino. The guy was just amazing and it was sad to see the Dolphins miss on so many draft picks that attempted to shore up the defense and running game as those were glaring weaknesses that really limited the team's ceiling.
Nice video. Hadn’t watched anything from your channel before but I’m definitely going to subscribe and keep my eye out for more :)
Thank you Damien 🚀
@@thehalftimeshow you’re welcome. Thank you for your efforts and work. 😎
Apart of his physical skills, which were superb, he was also extremely competitive and would fight till the last second. I remember a game where he threw five interceptions in a row and somehow he ended winning it. He would get in the face of teammates DURING the game, but never point fingers AFTER the game, even if they deserved it.
The Dolphins didn’t do right by him and were always a flawed team without a running game or a decent defense. He deserved at least one ring, but I’m proud of how he represents them now. Dan is the man, and will always be.
Watched his whole career and he was a fantastic QB, ring or no ring. Looking at his stats now don’t fully reflect how great he was. He was so far ahead of every one else in that era. In today’s game with every rule to favor the passing game, he would put up crazy numbers.
The "GOAT"!!!
ridiculous
I am of kind of rare opinion here, but I put MARINOS prime yrs of non playoffs squarely on DON SHULA,he had Dan,MARKS BROS,crash, but could not put a D unit together at that point to save his life and then when SHULA finally started drafting some studs on that side of the ball,OFFERDAHL,COX,BOWENS,VINCENT,Plus adding S LOUIS OLIVER,they had some PCs in place and u could just tell the main problem early 90's was they lacked consistency and the even bigger issue was they did not make in game or second half adjustments and that's what lead to so many shootouts along with the run game being lackluster at best, but imo I still say it was SHULA not getting rid of OLIVIDOTTI for another crucial stretch of MARINOS final Prime yrs,so that 8 yrs run which was MARINOS PRIME yrs there was NEVER,EVER a complete team around him however I do feel if they had a better DC in the early to mid 90's especially the 92-94 seasons they had a chance to catch Buffalo,in 92 they were at home in the AFC title GM as div winners and that is one of those times I'm saying, would have been nice to bail Dan out fir a game and at least keep it close and give him a chance to win it but ended up in a blowout, per usual!!
Thank you for sharing Ray, many of us did not get to witness those days of one of the games best to ever play. Your recollection is neat to read through. Thanks for watching The Halftime Show!
You're spot on with the Olividotti opinion. At least he wasn't as bad as Marv Levy in 4 superbowls. heehee
The 1990's was filled with astonishing quarterbacks. We ain't even gonna get into all the kings that came outta the 1980's, yo. That was the age of the Titans, b.
Man, I'm the biggest Danny Marino fan ever, and this is a GREAT video! Well done
Marino is a legend. Thank you for the kind words ChasTerran!
5:37: "That game against the Steelers is one of the fondest of Marino's career"......His hometown team passed him up in the draft. One of the dumbest mistakes by the Steelers, they passed up the pure passer ever.
He was so good he would be illegal in todays game.
He was so bad in the playoffs he would be illegal for a team to choose to play him.
@@9999deoxys No not really. He played good as an individual player in the playoffs, he just lacked a team to help him win
@@TheJusticefornone 1999 Fins vs Jags playoffs - : Dan Marino (11-25, 95 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions).
He was the best pocket passer ever.
best stat man ever.....bad playoff record when it counted.
Marino was the Mahomes of his day. A lot of similarities between the two. Marino was never the same after he blew his Achilles. They didn't repair them like they do, today. After the Achilles, he was a lot easier to contain. Before that, he was as elusive as he needed to be to make the play, much like Mahomes.
Throughout his era, I think the top teams in the NFC were just too good in the trenches.
This dude was a one-man show. His teams were average, but man sure scared the hell outta defenses for years. Better than any QB today
However, football is a team game, and January was not kind for most of his career. An all-time great regardless. He’d crush today’s NFL.
My grandfather passed away in '83. He told me Marino and Elway would be some of the greatest to ever play pro football.
40 years later...gramps' picks were winners
Dan Marino is one of my all-time favorites!
Dan Marino was scary. Good I'm a big Elway fan. Dan Marino had an arm too
Dan The Man period
Dan the Man who never won a superbowl Exclamation Point.
@9999deoxys Well that's a TEAM effort Try harder
@@tyrannicaltypomichaeltester I agree. And Dan the Man is not the type of guy who makes those around him better. He cares more about regular season stats.
@9999deoxys lol Good Joke Took two ok WR and made them HOFs they literally said that so facts >>> Your opinion or hate whichever it is. You xant take away that he held every QB record for 20+ Yeats in a tougher run first era and STILL holds some records. Or the fact that he changed the game or the fact he was the best pure oasser therr ever was
@@tyrannicaltypomichaeltester He was the best pure passer. I actually agree. That is the probem. He had so much talent and wasted all those years for the Dolphins in the playoffs because he simply was not good in the playoffs. He was very good in regular season. Most people dont care about regular season. Griese was better for the history of the Fins.
He had 87 career rushing yards in the NFL. Elway had 3500
Talking about throwing. Running well thats barry sanders. Goat
Duper and Clayton, the Marks Brothers. The Dolphins under Marino made the Shotgun a now common offensive formation. Later in his career Marino wore a visible knee brace that made him extremely slow and vulnerable in the pocket which is one reason for the constant shotgun position. It gave him a few more steps on the rush. Although he never won a Superbowl I would pick him any day over Bledsoe. Not saying it would be the wise decision but man I loved the 80's and early 90's Dolphins. 🏈
While I think he gets a bit too many excuses for his playoff shortcomings, him never winning a SB doesn'tcnegate the fact he was a master of pocket presence. The fastest release of all time and nigh impossible to sack.
Marino had the Cannon of All Cannons and was as Tough as Nails. In my book Marino is the King without a Ring
As a lifelong Jets fan, Marino was the guy I loved to hate the most when I was a kid - especially considering that the Jets were one of the teams that had passed on Marino only to draft a different QB named Ken O'Brien. Ken was a good QB, but never consistently reached the elite level of play that Marino did. I've always wondered how good the Jets would have been if they drafted Marino instead of O'Brien. Oh well. Woulda. Coulda. Shoulda. He was a great player and real Jets killer. I hated him (for killing the Jets more often than not) but respected the heck out of him.
Thank you for sharing Steven
Dan Marino was the greatest QB I’ve ever seen and it ain’t even close. There are so many of my Brothers that I would love to include in this but skin color aside, DAN MARINO was the GREATEST!! I’ve just never seen a man determine wins with only his ARM! Never had a great O-Line or Running Back and that alone puts him as my #1 and there ain’t even a CLOSE SECOND!! #MIAMIMIRACLEMAN
I was an avid Dolphin fan long before Marino came on board. Marino was clearly an exceptional qb that looked to be unstoppable but was. It was tough to watch the amazing Shula and Marino flaunt such skill but fail to really achieve much, despite being contenders for most of the 80s/90s. What I most remember is how temperamental Marino could be when things didn't go his way. I got the feeling that there wasn't great chemistry between the two (Shula/Marino) and often wondered if this was partly to blame for their lack of ultimate success. By the time Marino had settled down a bit, the team lacked talent in many positions and it just seemed like timing was never on his side.
My only question is, where did his dad learn the quick release. Marino had the prettiest throwing motion almost revolutionary
Dan Marino was the equal of or (much) better than any quarterback who ever won a Super Bowl. He was the fastest, most pinpoint accurate passer the NFL has ever seen.
And remember, through virtually Marino’s entire 17-year career, no other AFC team won a Super Bowl, until Terrell Davis joined the aging Elway & Broncos.
The Greatest Ever.
Don Shula is said to have told his assistant coaches after seeing Danny for only two weeks of his rookie training camp, to start force feeding him the playbook, make him call all his own plays to get him ready to start. Dan entered his first game in week 6 and never looked back.
and wasted several years of Dolphins teams chances for winning superbowls.
@@9999deoxys They went to the SB in Dan's second year but the 49ers had a much superior team with both sides of the ball loaded with Pro bowl/HOF talent. After that the Dolphins team got old around Dan as it was very much a veteran team (having been to the SB the year before dan was drafted. The Dolphins had some bad injury luck when Dan played but they had a couple very good teams but just didn't get by to the SB again. But it was never dan's fault...he was always spectacular and carried the team single handedly for many many games/seasons.
@@stevefowler2112 Bob Friese was better.
@@stevefowler2112 Bob Griese was better (spellcheck)
@@9999deoxys I saw them both play in their prime and I would disagree...Bob was a very talented QB, but his championship teams were loaded with HOF and All-Pro talent...Bob's OL was perhaps the best ever or at least in that argument and his defense was also ranked at the top of the league. Shula and the Dolphin front office were not able (poor drafting and some very unlucky injuries to top picks that looked promising) to build a championship level team around Dan and the couple years Dan did have the talent the cards just didn't fall right and there were teams with better talent 9the Bills on their SB teams).
Lol at Pittsburgh passing on Marino over partying and picking Rivera who was just as legendary for pounding beers as sacks in his time on the south plains in Lubbock ( rip)
Only reason his records were broken is because of panzy rule changes to protect the qb and receivers. Put flags on them!
Extremely good. Definitely top 4-5 ever.
He was the best QB to ever play the game, period.
I know he has no rings - so what.
He is miles better than anyone else that has ever thrown a ball.
If I could give two SB rings to the two most deserving players it would be Dan Marino and Barry Sanders
I've never seen a better quarterback. that release with that arm was unreal. all the intangibles too. took charge right off the bat. that front office failed him
Dan Marino was extremely reliable at his position. He's almost always had a top O LINE and outstanding receivers. When the dolphins went to the super bowl in his second year, he still had the remnants of a great 70's defense and running game to go with his passing accuracy, and power.
Marino was just like Aaron Rodgers great in the regular season and a choker in the playoffs. Name me some memorable moments he had in the playoffs. There are none.
Ouch lol
The truth of the matter - and I’m a huge fan - he was never able to win in “biggest of moment” games….
Top 3 arm all time.
and ZERO Superbowls....stat man, not winner
@@9999deoxys takes a good team to win
Marino's super-power was his incredibly quick release - his accuracy was up there with the best as well - but the fast release allowed him to avoid so many sacks - he still took plenty of hits after getting the pass away - as this was back when defenders were still allowed to hit the QB and not draw a flag very often ..
Facts. Thank you for sharing Billy!
For today's youthful NFL fans, he could throw easily as good as Rogers.
Pretty damn good
Have you ever heard of Chuck Ealey who played at the University of Toledo? Only undefeated quarterback in college history.
I have not, but will look into him.
I’d like to add that the New England team they lost to was found to be very coked out when they got destroyed by a legendary Bears squad 45-10 doing that SB shuffle
Mahomes threw 200 tds in 84 games. Marino did it in 89 games
Very good
He never could get over the top, no matter how many yards he threw for.
Shula keeping Olivadotti has defensive coordinator cost Marino his shot at another Super Bowl.
He was other worldly his first 4 years in the league, but was more pedestrian by comparison the rest of his career after that. The decline in fortunes of the rest of the team probably had more to do with that than anything he did or didn't do. The Dolphins draft history post '83 was, a few exceptions aside, abysmal.
Anytime someone brings something up about Marino, I always think about Kelly up there in Buffalo. He’s an interesting story too, all those superbowl losses plus his home life, surviving cancer and losing his only son to some rare disease.
But there really is no comparison when you consider that Kelly played good enough to help his team win 4 Conf. Championships and Marino played good enough to help his team win only 1 Conf. Championship. Twice, in '91 and '93 Kelly had a Defense that was Ranked 27th out of 28 teams using OFFICIAL NFL Rankings.
On top of that, Kelly outplayed Marino all 3 times they met in the playoffs, including the '92 Conf. Championship Game that was played in Miami. Plus, Kelly played his team into position to win the '90 S.B. game only to have his kicker (Scott Norwood) miss the game-winning field goal.
A PROLIFIC PASSING GOD
He was so hot
I think Ronnie Lott was a cornerback in SB19. The safeties were Carlton Williamson and Dwight Hicks.
How good??? The Best Ever.
How good was Marino? I had season tickets in Miami throughout his career, so I got to see him up close, and for me he’s the greatest pure passer in the history of the game. He routinely threw over 4,500 yds a year and of course had the 1 over 5,000 when that was unheard of, and a good completion % was around 57%. Only Montana/Young in the original version of Walsh’s offense had completion % in the 60’s and the 70’s which is routine today, simply didn’t exist. Marino in his prime under today’s NFL rules would routinely throw for over 5,000, probably flirt with 6,000 and easily have a completion % over 70%. While he was not mobile, he had incredible footwork in the pocket and was very hard to sack simply because he made his reads and got rid of the ball so quickly, with that incredible quick release throwing motion. And this was all without any running game after his 2nd season, when the entire world knew he was throwing the ball. The Dolphins’ offense during his years under Shula was very much ahead of its time, similar to Air Coryell. If the team had been able to give him a defense, they would’ve won several Super Bowls with Dan.
An incredible insight. Thank you Jeffrey.
How good was Ray Finkle actually?
marino is the goat, 1 man cant carry an entire team in the nfl
Miami should retire Duper and Clayton jersey number along with Marino's. Marino couldn't have done it without them. Marino is a legend and so is Duper and Clayton
Anyone name me the TE for the Dolphins when he played? Name me one RB that had two consecutive years rushing for 1000 yards. Give me his teams defense ranking? I’ll give you Don Shula at 70. No HC at 70 has won anything.
no rings, all i had to hear!!!
Marino is the greatest QB ever. Even Montana has said that.
Marino and Moon were both way too good not to have won a Superbowl. Shame
You give him Montana’s offense, and there’s no conversation about who’s the greatest ever. None.
take Dan Marino off any team and there would be a significant drop off in production. but I think he was so great that he made many of those dolphins team look better than they were. If you replaced him with even a solid or really good QB then the W-L records would go way down. Only one runner over 1000 yards during his years, and even then Jabbar avg less than 4 yds a carry. Bad defenses and an over reliance of Dan Marino getting them out of trouble.
