Also that the surrounding area is, like, Homeless Central: You’ve got junkies walking around, accosting the tourists, or just being mired in their own filth & misery. Why would anyone want to be around there? I’d imagine that tourism in this area has taken a hit lately, as the tourists have wised-up to the realities of that area.

Yup! Those were the days, not to be seen ever again. We would go up there on Black Friday arrive early in the morning, one year we took out 2 little ones with us, one was 2 year old and the other a one 1 year old, we would start the day with Breakfast at the Restaurant at Nordstroms watching all the business going on, on market street, then up to the roof top of Emporiums for some fun with the kids then over to Macys to rub elbows with the crowds down in the Basement from there to UNION Square for short break making ready for the push up Powell street, yes we did that with 2 strollers with babies bags and back packs hanging all over the place, we were having a blast going up that hill, a few people offered to help, but it was thank you but no thank you, we were JUST HAVING A BLAST! We were not going to let anybody take our fun away, people basically thought we were nuts, then we took a detour to China town for some lunch from there straight to Fisherman's Warf, we kick it around there for awhile then we had a dinner at Swiss Louie's on Pier 39, then it was time make ready to head back to Market street, but since we were there we also had to grab a hot dog after that we caught a cable car right about Mid Night, the Brake man gave us a hand loading up our stuff then back to Market Street we went, the cable car driver took it nice and slow for us trying to keep it as quiet as possible, the brake man was talking to us and asked us how long have we been pushing these strollers, we replied we started at about 9:00 am. he then did the math and said Oh Lordy you've been out there for about 15 hours with 2 little ones, you both deserve a medal! From there back to San Jose we went, and yes the kids were knocked out solid.
The down side of this trip was watching a Bank robbery stand off at the Bank across the street while we were have Breakfast at Nordstroms.
