3 Steps to Fairing a Hull, Building a Fairing Tool, S2-E27

- In this episode of the Art of Boat Building I begin fairing the hull. In this 3 step processes we discuss the method of hand planing followed by sanding with a slow speed rotary sander. The last step of long boarding is sanding by hand with a long board. As a part of the tool building series I talk about my criteria for the marine fairing board. Finding a donor tool at Harbor Freight I use the auto body sander to produce an improved tool that will be a flexible sander over the curves of the hull. Producing handles in black walnut not only makes the fairing board function better but it also becomes a beautiful comfortable tool.

Another great video! I love how you approach each step with the mind towards business like efficiency and the heart and hands of an artist. Just so you know, Steve from Acorn to Arabella was wearing one of your shirts on his last video. It's good to see you independent channels prop each other up.
That long board build is a stroke of genius
I've loved all the videos in this series, but this one left me with the greatest sense of satisfaction. I'll sleep better tonight knowing all the imperfections have been smoothed out.
The last two videos I watched on making tools I see how clever you were to use commercially produced tools and revamp them into a tool that suites your need and style. Great work Bob and thanks for sharing!
Real craftsmanship. Glad I found your channel
Happy Father’s Day Bob. That will be the fairest hull ever.
Thanks!
Looking awesome Bob. Won't be long now before you get to turn her keel side down. And then, to top all things, you turn a cheap Harbor Freight tool into art...I'm boggled! LOL You're awesome Bob, keep up the great videos! Be safe and stay healthy!
Thanks David.
Thank you Bob for the wonderful video and another tool build. This channel just keeps getting better and better every episode. Take care and stay well.
Thank you very much, and thanks for watching!
Cheers
Great video Bob and that tool mod is perfect, I have seen that sanding block before but never thought of modifying it the way you did. Boat is coming right along.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
Thank you for doing this. You are a very skilled craftsman and a jack of all trades! Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the video Bob! Eager to see the hull completed!
You and me both!
Thanks for watching!
Agree I have been doing just that for days!
If you shine a light at the end of the boat it will create shadows that show you the dips and humps that need to be sanded.
A darker paint can be applied too as a sanding guide coat. The paint helps show up the humps and dips. When sanding a dip will collet sanding dust exactly like a crater on the moon. A high spot gets gets clean! By watching and sanding between the two the boat can be faired quickly without removing extra!!!
Oh my shoulder muscles are aching just watching you sand. I like the flex sander and you really improved the grips. You didn't say anything about the grit, but from the scratching sound I'm guessing 80 to 100 grit. The boat is really looking sharp.
Great video as usual Bob. The boat is really looking good.
Thanks 👍
Very nice. I bet the hull is as smooth as a baby's bottom. I like your long board sander. But I expect you spent as much time modifying that Harbor Freight tool as you would have making one from scratch. But the result appeared to be very satisfactory. Well done. Thank you for sharing and please stay healthy.
Love the longboard. I have been looking at building one, instead of forking over $40 to $70 for a commercial one. I hadn’t a DIY version that I liked, mainly for the same reason, that the paper wasn’t easily replaceable. Thanks for the tutorial. Guess I need to make a trip to Harbor Freight in Davenport. I need to build one for my SCAMP build.
Thanks again for the great channel.
Sounds great. Let me know how it turns out. Best wishes on your Scamp build.
Thanks for watching.
Cheers
Wasn't sure about your channel, then you bought something from Harbor Freight .... dude I'm in !!! New sub here
Really beautiful work, Bob! It's looking fantastic! 😃
I made a small sanding pad with 2 blocks of wood that are working well... But I really liked the one you showed!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Nice one Bob, we don't have Harbour Freight in Australia but I will check out the tool shops for a similar flexible long board. That was a really nice job on the handles.
Looking lovely! You made sanding look quick and easy! I hadn’t long board sander before I did mine and it is pretty satisfying. Keep up the great work
Thanks Chuck!
Another great episode...
Your photography skills are National geographic quality... the face shots are amaaaaazing !
Wow, thank you! That's a big complement!
Received my shirt. Thanks
I bet that cedar smelt beautiful as you sanded it.
Indeed it does! quite a nice welcome each morning.
Thanks for watching.
Cheers,
I may have missed it, but did you say what grits of papers you started fairing with, and where you stopped?
I’m enjoying this series!
80 Grit then primed and sanded with 120 grit.
I had auto captions switched on and every time the rotary sander was on the captions said [Applause]😁👍
So funny. That gave me a good laugh. Thanks for sharing!!
Great stuff. Please satisfy my curiosity: plane on diagonal and same for longboard, how necessary is rotary sander? Intuitively seems unnecessary and perhaps even risky
Lovely shaped boat, great work. Can I ask why you don't set up the molds higher off the ground, so then you aren't bending over or working on your knees so much?
I find a light mist of black lacquer as a guide coat from a cheap spray can is beneficial when sand/ fairing to help identify highs and lows.
Hi Casey, I had remembered doing that back in my car painting days. I did try it on the hull but found that the cedar is so soft that the paint mist really soaked into the wood and wasn't much help in seeing the highs and lows. I think I'll try that method again after the first coat of primer is on. I think it will be a better read. Come to think of it I never did a spray mist on bare metal and filler, always after the primer.
Thanks for your input. I'll include that method in a later video.
Thanks for watching!
Cheers,
Bob
Bob be extra careful!! Illinois isn't out of the woods by a long shot. Poor Pat Childers died of corona virus in Cape Town on his and Rebecca'a circumnavigation. Enough to break my heart!
It helps to file the square corners down on the chisel blade. It will leave fewer marks on the surface.
Looks fantastic! Your seams appear tighter, and apparently the quality of Cedar is better than what A to A attempted.
Tim Reynolds you’re half right but not a fair comparison. That’s totally apples Vs oranges.
Go to an auto parts store and buy one used in auto body work. They also sell the sandpaper to fit.
Thanks for video! How smooth are you shooting for? 80 grit on rotary sander. Do you use a finer grit on the longboard - or multiple passes with finer grits?
Hi Robert, The cedar sands really nicely, it's amazing how smooth it is with 80 grit. I will do a final sand with the grain direction and then prime it. Using 80 grit will help the primer penetrate better. The primer will tell me if the fairing is good. If not more sanding. Ultimately I'll put 2 coats of primer and sand with 120 grit between coats.
Thanks for your question and watching!
Cheers,
Bob
Hey, I thought of modifying the exact same tool the exact same way for auto body work. If you want a stiff board, just put your sandpaper on a 2x4, right? Cars have curves too.
Indeed!
Prior to epoxy-based fairing compounds, what was used? I'm assuming some sort of tar or pitch, perhaps mixed with some animal hair or natural fibers.
Despite the obvious hazard risks, I bet that cedar was so aromatic while sanding it.
Hi, Where can I order the plans that you are using for the boat? Thanks for a nice series.
Hi Bent,
You can order them from the Wooden Boat Store.

Thanks for watching.
Cheers,
Bob
Are you planning on plugging the fastener holes or leave them exposed?
They will be filled with fairing compound.
Cheers,
I also have a lathe like yours that has a nonspinning tail, but it smokes real bad once the wood is spinning. Any tips?

I have never seen an overweight boatsmith.
Finally someone wearing a respirator for a good reason
Interesting that so may youtubers feel the urge to have music with the clips they do.I'd rather not have to listen to music and hear the work being done. The clip is more than interesting enough without the painfull music. I'm not complaining about your video, I think they're great, just try without the music.
I believe your nomenclature is incorrect. The common name I’d misery board
Ha so true. Sanding a hill does seem never ending.
