God, please! I really hope you're successful with this game. I would definitely pay for it! It looks freaking beautiful and I absolutely love cooking and open-world games, so this is literally what I am looking for!!!! Subscribed!
I really appreciate the attention you give to realism that might not necessarily be needed in a fantasy world. I've found myself wondering where the people poop within the world of a game I'm playing far more often than I'd like to admit. Even if they're just decorative, seeing facilities that you'd expect to see really helps immersion and adds so much more life to an area.
Yeah, this is one of those things that really make a world "lived in": where do all these daily problems get solved? It reminded me of a really good way to design a DND dungeon or any sort of "dungeon" setting: There is rarely a labyrinth of monsters and treasures made specifically for people to come and raid them. What if it's a former monastery taken over by a necromancer, who raised all the souls in the graveyard? Where would these people have slept? Where would the treasure be kept? What sort of valuable items aside from plain currency would you get from this? How would it be designed, like how you could potentially stow a large supply of useful herbs if the party stumbles upon the kitchen stockroom?
@@ruffethereal1904 i like the way some fantasy stories have turned on the idea that the dungeon keeper is actually a buisness owner making money off the adventurers coming and dying/abandoning their equipment. And only the really strong adventurers can turn a profit from it. So because it is made for adventurers to wander, loot and potentially get killed, its architecture makes "sense"
I always find pixel art games gorgeous. I'm not sure why, but they are looking more cozy than games with realistic art style. Also if you ever feel the need of a thunderstorm, I would think of adding wind effects such as slanted rainfalls or hustling wind when you stay indoor. If it's happening at night, an almost pitch dark setting with flashes of light from the lightning would make the weather even more atmospheric (almost like thunderstorm in Terraria). Suggesting this since I love the vibes and comfort I get from a thunderstorm.

This type of creative development is what makes great games great. I think pulling real world inspiration into your game gives it a powerful layer of depth. So many devs or creatives cite work in their own specific field as their inspiration but the best always pull from all the mediums life has to offer and then condense that into their craft.
When you put the overlays over the wood flooring, it reminded me of the game octopath traveler! They mix pixel art and overlays and it just so eye-catching and attractive. Definitely makes the art pop much more than it's original form

Just wonderful, your videos should be basic lectures for game designers. I work on a little game myself and I learn tons of stuff just from listening to you. Thanks so much for sharing. If you kickstarter goes online I will help share it a lot.
Really appreciate it! Hoping to contribute some knowledge into the games space in architecture and level design at least :) With VR becoming better, and the starting of the metaverse, there's a lot of exciting possibilities to create really amazing spaces since there is no limits on physics or budget.
I sincerely LOVE how you explain the design and how you relate to real-world designs and relate to what you studied and how school exercises reflect your current work. ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE!!
Love your art style. Much better than I've seen with anything else. I didn't realize how useful being an architect could be for game development. Makes sense in hindsight.
as an artist that struggles with designing spaces, this video was so nice to watch. it's interesting to see your architectural approach and explaining every part in your design process. loved this video!
I love this art and this video, specifically the glorious character portrait for Aylin. Whenever you remake the character sprites this game will be a visual master piece at every frame. The only problem I had, and this is a small misunderstanding, was the bathing room's over hang from the rock. Water is pretty heavy, are they supporting the tub off the end? Is the end of the room not actually for baths but instead various other services? Also, will you share the interior design of Aylin's Chamber? I would like to see what you make specifically since your using Spirited Away as your guide and the witches chamber was my favorite part of that film visually. What goes into a Androids room? How would they decorate?
Glad you like the character! In terms of engineering, it's not really hard to do a suspended pool like that. There's actually a bunch of them even in my city (Vancouver). Just gotta make sure the structure is designed correctly. I'll eventually do Aylins room. Gotta finish some other things first, but I'll probably post it in a Devlog or on twitter in a month or two :)
Please make more videos like this where you go through your thought process to make this. It is super interesting and I'm excited to see this game come to steam!

This was super interesting! Thank you for going through the whole process! You did a wonderful job of showing off how much skill is required at each step to arrive at a cohesive design. And you've also made wonderful decisions to make impact without getting sucked into less impactful details. Good job!

Just wanted to say thank you for making this video. Even just having the lexicon to talk about architecture in these terms is amazing and very helpful for reapproaching a design process for architecture in pixel art.
i remember when i was young back in the early 80s just dreaming of stories and gaming coming together in new ways -30 years later im watching a young gamer /story teller/artist basically using gaming software and art software to make another game and make a mini show to share that process = so awesome !!

Wow! This was so fascinating to watch. I have never really seen the process of designing a building (as I am more of a character artist), I found it very interesting and inspiring. You put so much effort and thought into the design, I can appreciate that a lot.
This is absolutely beautiful! Every little detail and inspiration that I had throughout, you ended up adding within like 40 seconds haha, except one: the baths overlook a forest, so the light coming in should be a bit green-tinged. Would also tie together the colour scheme with the rest of the building. Also, if the bathhouse is supposed to be a community hub and a place where people in town relax, might be interesting if NPCs only reveal certain information there, whether through mini-games, cut-scenes, whatever. It would become a very real hub for the player character if regular visits were needed to make stories progress, and also would underscore the role of Aylin in the town.
Thanks Caleb! You are right, the baths windows should show more of the exterior and have light rays. NPCs revealing certain info there is a great idea! Definitely pushes you to go to the baths more.

Dude this is gold... I'm not even far in and I've already saved this video and I'm stopping to comment. When making games, there are so many random things from other fields you can benefit from... you HAVE to know just how useful this is to look through the perspective of someone who knows architecture, right?! Ah, and then seeing you messing with the rectangles in 3D showing us HOW you do this step by step. Chef's kiss. Now I'm trying to think of games that don't have SOME type of building, thinking how many situations in a game involves you being in a room of some kind, how the layout of rooms in relation to each other just "makes sense" in certain games and how this relates to the function you are talking about (so now you can break down games you like and know WHY you like it), how that makes it much easier to create memorable locations and how thinking in this way is a huge asset for creating memorable locations, when you mention history how that impacts world building AND helps to make memorable locations, how it can be used to help create a narrative (and anything narrative added that isn't text is almost always a win), etc. THAT'S the kind of shit... an approach, a mindset, and armed with a few "best practices" tips that can save you time and end up with a better product to boot, and the less you know of or have thought of it the more you have to gain and very quickly (newbie gains for games). I subbed for a pixel art video obviously I backed the right horse.

this really brings me back to spineworld days. i've been looking for a similar game so this was pure bliss! absolutely gorgeous details, composition, style and vibes overall.
Awesome video! I love how you’re applying real architectural principles to the layout of the building. And as always, your pixel style is beautiful, and full of personality and intrigue. I do wonder if the exterior could use a bit more color contrast between the roofs and the steam pipe. As for the interior, I was curious what the modern, metal parts would do. Right now it feels like they are decorative elements without a clear function. Have you considered doing more with the bathhouse theme in terms of its water and steam supply? It would be cool to see some glass pipes or metal pipes with a few windows where you can see water or steam going through. Maybe add a few pressure and temperature meters. I think you can communicate more about the functionality of the bathhouse by having some of the decorative elements contribute to that narrative. To that end, the bathhouse’s location next to the water is ideal to start communicating that narrative. Maybe add some pumps and pipes, where you can see the water from the lake being pumped into the bathhouse. Maybe even add a water wheel on the left! Anyway, I don’t play games anymore, but seeing the world you’re creating makes me reconsider. I’m in awe of what you’ve accomplished. Keep it up!
Glad you are liking the progress! Have you ever been an architecture guest critic? Your comments are very good and sounds like something my professors would have noticed. You are right, I think there is more possibilities to push regarding the water and steam & the contrast with the high tech machines. Will probably come back to it eventually and spruce it up :)

@@PixelArchitect I haven’t. My background is in graphic design. But similarly, we make considerations of utility, aesthetics, color theory, contrast, composition, etc.
these are amazing suggestions
Very nice. You got a professional approach when it comes to designing new stuff.
I feel like some counter to greet the guests and a theoretical place for them to leave their belongings/coats are missing. I am really looking forward to the full release for this
I just found out what I'm gonna spend my night bingeing 😍 I've never been into pixel-art games and this video single-handedly changed my mind.
2 mins in and I'm already in love with your such visual explanations. You deserve all the fans and all the love!
Oh my god this looks amazing! The art and careful thought that goes into every aspect and detail is simply fantastic. Shut up and take my money!
I am really excited about the Chef RPG and added on my wishlist!
These baths look fantastic! Really like how you explained your process, you can tell it was a labour of love.
As an architecture student myself this is kinda helpful and i love the way you explain everything and i love the pixelart aswell :D
I never thought I'd be so excited by the animation of steam in a pixel art game
As an architecture student I find your process so refreshing really inspiring great job!
THIS IS SOOO IMPRESSIVE i wish i had the motivation to do projects like this
This video is so intrresting! When I need a building for my game, I usually make a sketch of the whole map, which include the natural environment. I like how you design this the other way by adapting the building to its environment. I don't know much about architecture but I have the feeling I've learned quite a bit in a small amount of time.
your buidling designs are amazing! You can truly see that you learned about it~ Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us aswell~~
You have incredible talent and creativity, there is no doubt in my mind this game is going to be wildly successful.
No how long it's been this is very beautiful work and effort is really something to respect
I cant wait for this game to come out! This game is putting all my favourite things together!
Oh my God!! We´ll have bathing suits!! Love it! And I really like how you illuminated the floors. I´m really anxious of having this game!! Thanks for sharing this! As an artist it really helps to understand how to create building and make them feel real.
Whooooooooa. This is one of the coolest projects / videos I’ve seen on RUclips. Not only is the final result beautiful, but the care and architectural knowledge employed here is phenomenal. Major props dude. Holy cow
Haha thanks Michael. Means a lot :)
truly learned a lot, not only in game development, but also in architecture design. To be honest, I'm beginner in the major of landscape design, so I really appreciate your work and hope to get some experience.
and you do know how to integrate the architecture workflow into game👍
This is a lovely video. I really liked one detail, the light coming out from the changing room to the lobby! Added even more emphasis to the main attraction of the bathhouse.
Looks awesome! The design is incredible and you draw these beautiful scenes with such ease! The bath is already extremely cozy.
i was scrolling through youtube and then you posted!! great job as usual, the game is looking so beautiful!!
Sheeeshhh, the quality is just soooo good, it really satiates my witchbrook crave, thanks a lot man
This is beautiful just as art and social media content showing your artistic process, but it's also a great way to advertise your game and humanize its development. Quite an agile and wise approach!
English isn't my first language and right now I'm truly noticing my limits because I'm in complete awe of your work!
Thank you for showing us your design process, it was rather insightful and helped me wrap my mine around designing environments for my own projects.
i wishlisted it! this game looks amazing and i'm so glad it's coming out for mac too!
I just gotta say, Rhino is the absolute perfect choice for 3d modelling software of this application. This looks amazing!
This has been a lovely thing to witness - truly very enjoyable. Thank you.
Your attention to detail is why I love this channel and your project so much! ✨
I think the most natural way to show off the building exterior is for the camera to slowly zoom out as the player climbs the hill
oh my god this is beautiful… i’m an architecture major at a university and you remind me of one of my old professors i had last year! i specialize in autoCAD and i built a replica of howl’s moving castle in AutoCAD and I brought it over to inventorCAD and 3D printed several parts of it. This video gave me so much serotonin and i love your work! you’re a huge inspiration to a lot of my friend in my major as well as others! please keep up the amazing work and stay motivated! u got this!
Aweomse! It’s looking better and better every single video. Is there anything else you’re blogging updates on (e.g. twitter, instagram, maybe even twitch)?
Thanks! I have a Twitter if you want to follow :) I'll be posting more frequent updates on there since videos take a while to make
You make pixel art look so warm and inviting! I am going to get this game when it comes out that's for sure.
Whoaa .. i like games, design and architecture and you made a really great job. Congrats !!
I absolutely love your videos a lot. They are very calming and so interesting!! I really admire the thought, dedication and love that goes in this project. And i will 100% go buy the game when it's out. The exploring already is gonna be so fun, finding all the little details in the art design, aaah😄
That really turned out well! You managed to add a lot of atmosphere.
The world looks so beautiful! I wish the overworld sprites looked more asethetic but I think I would still play.
This game is absolutely gorgeous. Very good job, dude.
So beautiful and cozy, this really makes me want to create some environments as well!
