In 1987 I was working as a bouncer at a bar called Finkys in Daytona Beach ( now called Baja club I believe ) Ronny Van Zant was there's doing a meet and greet , I got the chance to talk to him and I told him about a friend of mine who was hit by a car when I was a freshman in high school seven years prior, she was in a coma for an extended period of time and her family would play her favorite song " FREEBIRD" over and over again until she woke from her coma
At the end of the night he walked over to me and handed me a rolled up sheet of paper and told me to make sure my friend gets it.
He had written her name at the top followed by the lyrics to freebird and signed it " from one survivor to another, Ronnie Van Zant "

@andystransportchannel7784 On par equal to Allen? That's hilarious! For starters there isn't a person alive that is equal to Allen Collins when it comes to the solo on Freebird. To date Ed is probably the closest I've ever heard to playing it very close to Allen. Ricky isn't even half the guitar player that Ed King was & to say that Ricky went out of his way to play a similar guitar as Allen makes me scratch my head. It's the exact same model Allen used. Another thing is Ricky went on record to say he never wanted to play it exactly like Allen & truth be known it's because he couldn't anyways

Allen wasn’t the same after the crash that left him paralyzed and in constant pain. He always left the spotlight as soon as he was introduced. He was always introduced at the shows because it was a condition of his sentence to use his fame and accident as a warning and deterrent to others about drinking and driving. Introducing him last was a way to keep him up front a little longer, and not have it look like one of the founding members of the band was showing up the crew be leaving as soon as he said his part.
I mean, could you imagine how the crew would’ve felt if he was first, threw up the deuces, and rolled off while you were being recognized as being essential to pulling off the tour successfully?

@@ZacCostilla Collins was paralysed in a different crash - he flew his car into a field, when the emergency call went through and politely asked which field he was in, he answered ‘Drumming, but wtf has that got to do with anything? Geezus, where’s the bloody misuss gone - what a dicriculously shit time to fuck off in the middle of bloody nowhere leaving me drowning in muddy spring waaaaaat the fuck. ZZzzzzzzzz
Edit: I apologise, it’s just a thing that happens to you as you barrel into the arse end of your fifties in England, you suddenly become a pretentious arsehole because you suddenly realise that your entire life’s work spent researching, taking lectures, giving lectures, and being patronisingly referred to as ‘an expert in your field’ amounts to knowing less than 0.1% of all there is to know, with respect to your chosen field; it’s like a kick in the plums with a JCB backhoe - so when you say ‘....the crash..’ with respect to Lynyrd, I automatically assume you meant ‘THE’ crash, when that may not actually be the case.
