The 1290 Adventure is very tall, maybe not as tall as the BMW 1200 GSA. I've sat on both and at approximately 6'1", I can't come close to flat footing either of them.
Such tyres have no grip if compared to proper off-road cross or enduro ones! But then why so much extra weight?... I mean I got off- and on- road bikes, both are good in only their own ways.
That bike at 480 pounds weighs less than my road bike at 530 with nearly twice the displacement and triple the HP. I've ridden mine on trails and light dirt, the weight is not that bad..
Is it possible for you guys to add USD or Euro in the description? I know this is a S Africa base show, but most people viewing this on YT are not from there and dont know what Rand is.
This is an ADV Bike, mean it should be reviewed as such, not as a Motocross or Enduro nor like Daily commuter. This Big Puppy is build with the idea of spending Log days in the Saddle, for many days over different type of terrain and weather conditions and most impotent thing loaded with all your Camping and personal gear. Now, tell me how this Bests behave anther those parameters, tested by ADV Rider and not a motocross or Rally Pro rider. Your review like many or even most of the reviews of ADV Bikes, sorry, but it's not relevant
This design is nice.. the new design will keep me from buying the bike until they improve the paint scheme. I don't know why they do these things. The new colors are awful.
The KTM Is nothing more than an off road 'HUNGRY' 'ROAD LEGAL' 'MOTOCROSSER' for X - 'PARIS DAKAR' riders in the outback of Australia! ( fugging joke!) For the average road rider in the UK & Europe, there Is only one bike? The BMW GS 1200/1250 AVENTURER!
@mld Haha, indeed. I just traded a 2018 Africa Twin a few days ago for a 2020 1290 Super Adventure R. The AT had enough power for offroading, but it seriously lacked power on the road. With the 1290 SAR, I have enough for both. Offroad mode limits the engine to 100 hp, so no worries about having to ease on the throttle too much when riding on rough roads. Besides, even with all that extra engine, it doesn't weigh more than the Africa Twin. So it's mostly a win win.
Ktm still the boss
These guys are seriously impressive...one of the best channels for moto shit on youtube by far.
Reminds me of top gear for bikes, keep it up guys :)
How’s the realibity with these things, thinking of buying a used one with 30k miles 🤔
I got my 1290 SA R 2 days ago, MAAAAAN what an engine....
It's been 2 years since you posted that. Do you still like the bike? I'm considering purchasing one.
AWESOME review gents! When the bikes land in South Africa, matbe a review between the new 1290 Adventure R and the new 1090 Adventure R?
So impressive ridding!
Whats your height. My height is 170 cm can i ride it?
"I don't know this Chris, but I don't like him!" :))) Don't be jealous :).
1090 Adventure R please
@0:36 (R: Rally) (S:Sport) said KTM
Congratulations.
*is the bike too tall or are you too small?*

Nice bike and nice review as always. I currently having an issue with choosing between the R and the S model. Is there a compare review coming?

The figures i've seen for the 2017 1290 in USD is around 19,000 MSRP.
the bike weighs 250 kg not 219kg
I really think that some factories are being gone too far... with really heavy Ass Bikes
Almost three years later, I want this bike badly - if it turns a short, fat hobbit into an off-roading god, it's right for me!
any one like to donate one KTM 1290 Super Adventure S for me?

right, what next? 1600cc Adventure R ??? nonsense, who needs 160HP off-road or on road except for the track...
Wild One next will be hybrid bikes!! I'm joking but that would actually be awesome!😎
Wild One 100 PS for off-road is more than sufficiënt.
