As someone who has been abused as a child, I can say with certainty that it is not arbitrary that Marty is loving sometimes but cruel others. At least in my own experience, one of the hardest parts was my father's unpredictability- I never knew whether I would get the dad who wanted me to help him work on the car and gave me hugs or the one who would yell and beat me for either insignificant reasons or completely made up nonsense.
I like the white world with the lake, the dinner table, and the two statues. You first find Marty by the lake. He's clean and friendly looking. He even wears high-end business clothes, a well-off and well-kept man. He shows love for Lisa. Then, you see a dinner table, with food in the center. A full plate, no hunger or want. Next, two statues. One man, one woman. As soon as you get between the two, the world changes. Food is no longer on the table, the water in the lake is filthy, and your father is an ugly monster. The way the symbolism is set up is just...wow.
This is just a supposition but i get the feeling the statue with a hole in the crotch is a representation of how Marty treats his daughter, the fact that he dehumanizes and sexualizes her, makes clear to Lisa that he doesn't see her as a human being with feelings and thoughts, but an object with a "hole" to use whenever he feels like it. The room where there is the statue is, has also the same shape of Lisa's room, the statue is positioned on the right side of the room where her bed is supposed to be, and the fence could represent the fact that she views her bed as a trap she cannot escape.
Still shocked from the ending of the painful, watching the downfall of a character you've become so attached to sucks some serious ass. But this game is a serious mindfuck. I noticed some of the sound effects from this game are taken from the painful, you hear the joy withdrawal noise a lot it in this game it seems like.
As for the repeated cross imagery, that has to do with Marty having formerly been a churchgoing man and watching religious programs... something that he continued to do, even as he was abusing Lisa, which led to her viewing Christianity as a 'hypocrite's religion' preaching one thing but doing another, saying that God rewards good people and punishes bad people, and then sitting by and doing nothing while she is forced to suffer in silence. It could also symbolize her growing lack of faith and hopelessness, as she felt that no one could save her, that no matter how far she ran, how long she hid, Marty would always be an unpleasant part of her subconscious mind, sabotaging any potential happiness or dreams of a better life, forcing her to find another way out... a permanent way out.
Wow, i haven't played LISA: The First but man holy crap it's a way different kind of game. The symbolism is at a all time high. All of the stuff we've been seeing so far seems to be what's in her mind. The statue having a hole in it's crotch and the plastic bag and the guy seems to atleast symbolise that...they... did... err..., also... that banana seems to look like... I should probably stop that thought process now. That said, i REALLY shouldn't have watched this while having a electrical outage while watching this on my phone in an empty apartment. The imagery is stuck in my mind.
+RockCandy I can imagine playing this game for the first time without knowing of the sequel; the story would be a little more subtle to who is who, but yeah the symbolism is where it's at.
literally got here because i was too lazy to play the game after finishing the painful, i got stuck on the first area and thought i'd go see a playthrough
The reason they look like deformed monsters isn't due to Joy; it's simply trauma, Lisa's negative experiences making her see Marty as a disfigured, STI-afflicted monster. The series as a whole is about trauma, pain, unrequited/one-sided love, rape, pettiness, rage, hate, misery, our failures as human beings, and the need to try and distract ourselves (or even better, escape) from the awfulness of our lives. Some do this through studying martial arts, like Brad. Some do this by turning to sex, to alcohol, to drugs (such as the ironically-named Joy, which takes away a person's ability to feel ANY emotion... and anyone suffering from PTSD or other emotional disturbances can tell you that for them, that IS a feeling akin to "joy," to not be able to feel any emotions that bring back painful memories). And others dedicate themselves to pointless revenge (in the case of Buzzo, who blamed Brad for not doing anything to prevent Lisa's suicide, even though he failed to help her too), persecuting and torturing those who you blame for your and others' suffering.
I'm gonna play Lisa the Painful in a couple days. Thanks for the swell intro advising to stick to that game first before exploring stuff about the first game.
I never played this one but I read it was inspired by the free-roaming Yume Nikki. With little to no dialogue, It looks interesting so far; symbolism shows.
Watching this right after I finished the Painful. Btw I've heard some rumors, though I'm not sure how much of them are true. I've heard that Dingaling created the Lisa The First as an homage to his ex-girlfriend who was being abused by his father. So in that regard maybe we can say Lisa = his ex-girlfriend. Not sure if his ex-girlfriend committed suicide in RL or not though ._. And, Dingaling also practices martial arts in RL. Edit: Also accourding to Dingaling, out of everyone Lisa is the worst person. And Buddy is his least favorite character. Strange.
OH,Oh, i have an idea. Do you remember that at resort island there was a giant horn (or tube, i don't know how is this in English) and a lot of mutant around, just like the cross and dad-mutant there. Doesn't that mean that tube-guy (Jado)is like a god for mutants in LISA The Painful, and he is kinda controlling mutants with his horn. I don't think its just a coincidence.
+Materwelonz But still the fact that a lot of mutant were around that giant trumpet realy means something important to the plot. I think i Joyful we will finally get all the peaces together.
oh.......fuck.........the whole plastic bag thing.......no wonder why the guy's head looked like something else......and the thing he said.. jeez....that was way too fucked up.......really a bad idea watching this right before I sleep
+Ding Chick i told you it was better to go to sleep first! and i don't know if it was beacuse i kind of knew something like this would come up or what, but the colour of the ground and the road i feel like was a hint
+Ding Chick Yuuup. Brad was older than Lisa too, so I guess he understood (or would have understood) that it's not really a plastic bag. No wonder he was so obsessed with protecting Buddy.

I don’t remember asking?
Tim Burden All of us likely share the sentiment; no one needs your approval to say something.

The creepy sax is good atmosphere
Lisa : The First is a Yume Nikki style game , that's why it's so confusing , the story is vague and the rooms keep looping.
Asterf Actually it all started as a ymme Nikki fan game, then the developer made it something bigger.
I was actually about to say the same thing lol

#LISAtheFirst: The prequel to Painful -- a completely diff style of game, yet equally (if not more) disturbing.

+StevenQuick More like Painful used sound effects from this game, as it came First!
+Fusion That's what I meant lmao
Ha!, the sound you make when looking at a toilet is the soundtrack in Lisa: The Painful when you entered the gym and wrestling area.
+32 HPpotion Apparently that sound is from Shenmue 2 originally lol
Ooohuh! Ooohuh! Ooohuh! Ooohuhoohuhoohuhooohuh! Ooohuh!

26:39 Dear God, the mutants came early!

"You would not believe how long that took me."
Yeah I would. Can't say you weren't warned! :P
F***ing spiders.

Finaly, I was soooooooooo bored at this 2 days (maybe cause im ill) , but now i finaly happy again !!!
+Илья Баранов It was only 1 day! xD but I hope you feel better soon! I'm getting some coughs too :(
The gameplay is a throwback to yume nikki while the sprites are a throwback to earthbound. I quite like this surreal yet nostalgic style
I never played this one but I read it was inspired by the free-roaming Yume Nikki. With little to no dialogue, It looks interesting so far; symbolism shows.
Do you have any idea , of what are you going to play after Lisa : The First and Lisa : The Joyful?
Hopefully something a bit happier. Such as The Cat Lady. :/
+Pedro Okazaki I have a rough idea! I basically have a list and whenever I'm done something or feel like it I just pick something out.
+Heliophanus Lol jesus, great point though. Feels like I've played a lot of depressing games lately.
i love lisaaaa the first so much
You never went back to the place you said you would, at 16:00 -- does anyone know if that was a proper path or not?

this is a lot more like yume nikki (vs lisa: the painful) imo

oh.......fuck.........the whole plastic bag thing.......no wonder why the guy's head looked like something else......and the thing he said.. jeez....that was way too fucked up.......really a bad idea watching this right before I sleep
though i can't quite see how you knew what's coming right after you play the VHS
+Ding Chick There's also the other nickname that is used for the name Richard, as if they didn't already make it clear enough from what he said.
Ex Bambee but is Rick short for Richard ?
Been trying to find a playthrough
Wow.. I didn't know the game was this dark..
Thanks for being so persistent. xD
This game seems to be more metaphors and stuff than actual... you know... making sense.
Hello 4 year old comment! Hope all's been well with ya. Also ayy nice pfp, we should really *hang out* sometime lol. 😏 👉👉
...we fought...I lost(falling from heaven:never should have been disobediant to HIM...)
Hiss!!!!!Who am I!!!!Just @ me.
Why does Lisa’s face look super flat from the side?
Michael Wadsworth good point. It is flat.
29:44 I gave up on the game at this point. simply couldnt pass it
Start to watch very emotional and messed up video
The ad before: 30 SECOND ROUND HIGH ENERGY
so what's the difference about Lisa painful and this lisa?
Main character is Lisa in Lisa the first while Lisa the painful is both a turn based RPG with the character being Brad.
