I'm gonna say something controversial yet brave, I hope 2024 turns cozy games more towards unique things, like season: a letter to the future, jusant, spiritfarer. The farm sim is tired, she has chronic fatigue, let's give her some rest for 2024!

Love love love the ease of this list! I was just telling my partner I usually avoid list recs because I find a lot of creators just talk about how much they loved it and not what to expect with the game itself. I appreciate you gave us the perfect blend of your thoughts and experience and the facts! Your little game cards were so helpful because I often write down recs to find out I don't have the right platform.

Coral Island is all I've been playing. It's so relaxing and a lot of fun. I'm consistently surprised by how many different lines of dialogues the townspeople have too which makes the world feel so much more immersive. The fact that they comment on upcoming or recent festivals, family members birthdays is impressive. And I've only partway through year one summer but the 2 festivals I've experienced are so cute and detailed.

@@tikusbluethis game's start is so boring I have been contemplating returning it. Not even through day one. There seems to be no story. No reason you are there or taking up farming. I was so unimpressed by the the opening and the art style is so far also unimpressive- I bought it in spite of how it looked.
So many people seem to think this game is great. Does it end up more interesting or does everyone just like the farming and other mechanics?

My friend gifted me this game on steam when I was having a rough time, and then we realized my laptop doesn’t have the expensive operating system it requires to play. I wanted to play it so bad, watched it on kickstarter and all that, but they make it impossible to play for certain computers and I think that’s shitty :x

    • @mightyowl1800
      @mightyowl1800 7 месяцев назад

@@boobailey4509 its a biiiiiiig game and while laptops have come a long way, they prioritize space versus power. You could need more ram, more drive space, a higher graphics card (although I imagine most will work with lower settings, my graphics card is ancient and I'm on high settings) On a PC, especially one you build, you can add and swap parts out. On a laptop, not so much. Maybe you're tech savvy and have already tried troubleshooting but on a laptop, you're gonna need to do more tweaking to get something to run. Devs can only do so much and I don't think they are trying to be "shitty". If steam deck folks can, I have faith your game can be optimized to your machine! Hope this doesn't come off patronizing, just trying to be informative and tone is lost in text.
Games also have minimum operating specs to compare your equipment. And coral island has some forums on discord and steam with folks that could try to help you with more specifics. Good luck to ya

@kirielbranson4843 I'm sorry, boring? When you've only done halfway through DAY ONE??? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 since it's been some time since you've commented. If you see this, how is it so far, did you get further? I'm surprised you think the graphics are bad, they're really good. People ADORE stardew valley and it's PIXILATED (made by one person which is impressive) but still! Also from what I hear, there is soooo much to do and the story and events are amazing!

DDV is one of my absolute favorite games, I have never paid real money (other than the actual game itself) & I’ve had it well before recently during its first stages and seeing it develop into what it is today with all the new realms, the dream snaps and the DLC it’s a phenomenal game in my opinion. There is a crazy amount of things to do, so many biomes, so many things to collect, so many quests and relationships to form. I think the creators of this game have worked so hard to make this a game to be loved by many, while I can agree with some controversy, I as a whole personally believe it’s great, I’m addicted. Lol… I’d give it a shot for what it is now.

I agree with you! I've never had to pay money for any content as well... Also, the things you can get with the moonstones, they always come back around. Its not like if you don't have enough moon stones at that particular time then you won't have another opportunity to get it later on. And I especially love the new DLC.

Well, Apple arcade is five euros a month. So if you want to played this games and so many others, I would say it's worth it. But I play it on my MacBook because the controls are better. On a iPhone it takes longer to walk around and do stuff, so I would get annoyed quicker.

I think you would love Rune Factory 4 Special if you’re looking for something new! Rune Factory can be really confusing at first because it’s so different from any other farming/villager game I’ve played, I had to watch a lot of “tips and tricks” videos when I was first getting into it. I have the combat settings to easy, and you have save points before every boss battle so you can close the game out and try again if you die lol. Rune Factory 4 has the BEST villager dialogue I’ve ever played. Every character is so well fleshed out, and there’s gossip and interesting quirky storylines. The villagers feel so real! I highly highly recommend you check it out next year if you haven’t yet

I have been playing DDV without doing micro transactions. I just love this game and it helped me a lot. Maybe I am just into Disney characters. Maybe I just don’t do the grind too much. But I have a soft spot for this game.
I have some games now in my to-play list too. Strange Horticulture, Spiritfarer.
There’s also an old Playstation game that is on Steam that I have been meaning to play-Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture. It is a walking sim and I don’t know if it can be classified as cozy since it has a heavy story to it.

The way you described the ultimate gaming session for Storyteller is exactly how I play games with my kids. I am not very good at working the controls in a lot of games but I can help with the puzzles so we've played single-player games as group activities for years.
I tried the Hello Kitty game twice but I couldn't get past the opening scene on the plane. It is so sugary that I felt cavities forming in my teeth, LOL. Since there are puzzles, I may give it another try. Also, you are right about Apple Arcade. I'm always flabbergasted when people think a game is new when it drops on PC or Switch, but it has been around for a year on Apple Arcade.
I'm one of those cozy gamers who does NOT like platformers. My virtual body in games is just as uncoordinated as my physical body in real life, and I get frustrated quickly at not being able to jump up on a ledge or avoid an obstacle.
As for my favorites, I'm still working on my backlog of Apple Arcade and Netflix games, so I usually don't get to a game until it has been out for a while. However, I enjoyed Japanese Rural Life Adventure on Apple Arcade. This was a surprise to me because I don't like pixel art that much, but this is a relaxing game to drop in and out of for me.

I'm sad that you stopped with DDV - I really love it, but I've been slowly playing through it and I genuinely love the Jafar Time plot. I can't wait for more of it and more extensions of the Valley. I don't care about Dream Snaps or the Star Path though. I try to get enough moonstones for the things that pop up that I genuinely gasp over, but mostly I just like doing the fun things and playing Scramblecoin. :)
I did write down your best games and started playing Palia which definitely has the same vibes and mechanics!! And since it's free I'm recommending it to those that don't want to pay the Dreamlight price point.

You totally hit the nail on the head regarding DDV. I played it from the first day it came out and happily put over 611 hours into the game. I was obsessed with it and totally enjoyed it, until the grind got so bad for the star path. I would groan when I got a task to find 10 sapphires or other specific gem that just didn't drop easily no matter how many nodes I mined. Or a task to give 6 gifts to a specific character, which would take 2 days because you could only give a character 3 gifts per day. Finally I just stopped playing DDV all together and haven't missed it at all. BTW, I LOVE your curls!!

Have you tried Book of Hours? You play as a librarian and you have to explore a mansion and unlock rooms and look for books. Everything you come across in the rooms can be used to help you progress in the game. The level of detail and writing is insane, there is so much lore embedded in everything. Disclaimer: there is no tutorial, you’re meant to figure it out on your own, and part of the fun is figuring it out because it is like a giant puzzle, but you can always look for gaming tips for the start of the game. There is no wrong way to play. It’s so cozy and it’s randomized every time you play which books you’ll find in the house and which characters will visit. Would recommend! And the developers are still adding updates and making improvements.

Dreamlight was such a surprise because it's such a heartwarming game if you enjoy Disney! The micro-transactions don't hinder your gameplay in any way, and the starpath (IMO) is meant to be completed as you progress through the friendship quests with your island pals. The extra battlepass features don't take away from the stories, decor, or creative outlets they give you to make your world exactly as you wish :)

DDV really disappointed me, I regret buying it and I wish I could return it. I love Coral Island but now that I've played the full release, my recommendation would be to wait to buy it because it isn't a complete game yet. The Halloween festival doesn't even have the NPC's in their costumes! So disappointed. So for anyone who hasn't bought it yet, just wait a couple more months.

HI, as someone who has been playing VRChat for several years now, I will say that you were VERY lucky not to run into trolls or other terrible people on there, bc my blocklist on there is like 5 miles long bc I constantly run into trolls or bullies or creeps, so PLEASE be safe and don't go into it thinking that everyone on there is nice, that is definitely not the case. Some of them are kinda funny, but there have been many that made me almost cry bc of how awful or gross or creepy they were, and there are also people who like to try and play NSFW videos in public instances, (I have both been in a world as someone started trying to do that and also accidentally joined a world while people were doing that, and it was awful both times) and also depending on your avatar people are more or less likely to be awful to you for different reasons, like if I'm wearing an avatar of a pretty woman, that tends to attract lots of the creepy types, but if I'm wearing like an avatar of an anime, it attracts the bullies. Please be safe and don't be too stingy with the block button, bc while there are a lot of cozy worlds and chill people, do not let that make you think that everyone is the same on there. VRChat is great and I love it and have made lots of friends on there, but it definitely can be really bad at times too, bc the moderation isn't actually the best and there are lots of people very easily getting away with breaking rules

Omg I do have some opinions on Dreamlight Valley. I feel like it's definitely a mixed bag and personally, I could only recommend it to people who:
    - Have a loooot, and I mean a loooooooooooot of extra time to play the game
    - People who don't mind/have the money for microtransactions
    - People who love literally everything disney/pixar
    - You love games that include a looooooooot of grinding (I'm looking at you Minnie)
(Sorry this ended up being a loooong comment but apparently I had a lot to say.)
Now, I am someone who meets one of those things. I have a lot of time on my hands and I do love disney/pixar things but only certain ones. Unfortunately, it's really hard to play this game and NOT compare it to ACNH because it feels like it's very similar with there being a very big element to decorating your valley. So to the end of decorating, it fell flat for me simply because there are characters you get that you have to bring to your valley to progress the story and once they're there, they don't leave. If their house doesn't fit the aesthetic or fit in anywhere, you're out of luck. My first eyesore was unfortunately WALL-E's house (I'm sorry WALL-E, I do love you). Didn't fit into the aesthetic I was going for at all and basically had to box him in somewhere and cover it up with trees/other nature things. But other characters kept coming out that really stuck out badly and it just became this mess where there are characters/houses I don't really want in my valley but I can't do anything about it.
Secondly, the microtransactions definitely went off and there has been drama surrounding certain elements. Such as there being a limit at Kristoff's stall with certain materials. A lot of people thought when this first happened that this meant they were getting ready to bring out microtransaction boxes that had those materials in them. I don't know if this actually turned out to be true because I haven't picked up Dreamlight Valley in ages. Also just the fact that they started bringing out microtransactions that are extra items and not only that, only a certain amount of them and after a certain time frame it gets refrehed and you don't know exactly when that item you may have wanted to buy will cycle back in. So in this way, their microtransactions was also giving players a sense of FOMO and giving more panic insentive to buy moonstones.
Thirdly, I don't know if it's been fixed at all (but I would bet it hasn't), time traveling works but it can potentially break your whole save file. I've heard of people doing this and it messed up their save so much that stuff wasn't refreshing in Scrooge's store and stuff stopped spawning/growing. Apparently this is because especially if you time travel to the future, if you go back, you would have to wait for real life time to catch up to that moment you time traveled to. A lot of people in the community seemed to have mixed opinions about this because there is a decent amount of people who considered time traveling "cheating" because you could get the advantage of farming out all the items in scrooge's store or farm out a lot of pumpkins for selling and all that. However, I actually think them not building it to support time traveling is another reason that some people fell off the game. Some people don't use time traveling for "cheating", but rather so they can actually enjoy the game on their own schedule because they work or are busy during the times of day you need to be around. For example, catching certain rare critters, catching the right characer to continue a quest bc just like ACNH they have sleeping schedules and etc.
Overall I don't recommend this game to anyone unless you're willing to spend money on microtransactions or further content and you have a whole lot of time on your hands. Unfortunately I don't have the extra money to continue buying different characters or buying all the microtransactions for other items and that along with the designing element ended up falling flat for me and I ended up abandoning the game. It was cool (although a little buggy) at first when it was new, but I didn't want to stick around.
I also want to add that I heard some time back they increased the limit of items you could put down in your areas on PC but did not on Switch. I understand that the Switch can have problems because maybe it wouldn't be able to handle the load and whatnot, but it still sparked some controversy between PC and Switch users because Switch users still felt like they were basically getting a "lesser" version of the game. Again, I'm not sure what improvements they may have made at this point, but some of these things that at the time are what ultimately made me put down the game.

My jaw dropped when you said Disney Dreamlight Valley LMAO but I agree!!!!! I think at the core, it was more or less worth the initial one-time $40 purchase for the amount of content in the base game, the initial plot and unlocking characters and etc. but I don't think it holds up as an "evergreen" game that is supposed to be forever playable (aka the star paths and new item releases). I think it has its best value as a game that you pick up, complete to your personal satisfaction, and then put down.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one that has been frustrated with building in lego fortnite. It prevent creativity because you can't actually just make something up and build it, you HAVE to pick a layout if you want it to look nice.

I was actually genuinely upset at how short it was and really don’t think the length and amount you get out the game is worth the price 😔 I loved the story so much and I’d recommend the game to others but honestly only if it goes on sale. There are indie games out there for the same price or cheaper with WAY more content and replay value imo.

The best game I find cozy but not really, but really... is "7 Days to Die". Postapocalyptic, collect resources, quick build, survival game, tools and guns. Every 7 days there's a horde of zombies that come looking for you. You have quests, build your base and home you design/paint. The world is so realistic, you choose the biome you want to live in. You follow recipes by collecting. So much fun.

I liked Strange Horticulture and was able to play it twice so far, it was still fun the second time.
I also liked Cosy Grove which took a nicely long time for me to finish, and now my eight year is playing it off and on too so that's excellent value for money (plus it was cosy even if it's a little sad!)
Witchy Life Story is definitely on my list when it goes on sale next, I have a shortlist and I just wait for sales.
I would never pay $60+ for a game, that's just not the kind of gamer I am. I get other people do and no shame to them at all! I would just never feel like that value could be paid back to me in a game is all.

37:39 honestly, I am pretty okay with Disney DV. You only need to pay for stuff if you want the extra items and if you play on Switch, you are really restricted in what items you can place anyway. You can only have one creature following you at a time and so collecting all of them is a waste of time, money and resources. I did get the expansion and I do think I will put in enough hours that with updates I won’t regret it. Yes, there is a decent amount of grinding, and star paths can make it worse because if you need to collect a certain amount of something then having a helper to give bonus resources isn’t actually helpful towards achieving the goal. But I have found it fun to get to see all the different characters outside the context of their movies.
