      Could you please explain me how to use Fusion 16 to just render ONCE? Every time I have to use it to edit images using some tools, I always end up rendering 4-5 of them before I stop it, as I never found out the way to specify the number of times it should cycle through the nodes.

Would you consider doing a video on studio player in fusion stand alone? There seems to be little to no information available for this feature. BMD should be thanking / paying you to do this! I recently bought Fusion standalone and it's a breath of fresh air. I had lots of buggy issues with Fusion inside Resolve - back on the timeline I'd get weird glitches, and you inevitably ended up having to render out what you did anyway which is a lot clunkier inside Fusion in Resolve as you have to go into the delivery page etc etc. Fusion standalone has given me no issues. The Fusion connect clip function in Resolve is very useful too. It's easy to get any clip out of Resolve quickly and add it to a Fusion comp. I don't use it the other way however, so I never create a connect clip then use it in Fusion and let it update in Resolve as Resolve needs to render it still and that to me is slower than rendering in Fusion which updates whatever rendered clip you have in Resolve anyway. It's a great tool but still don't understand why it sucks so much for particles.

    the advantage of the Resolve licence key is that it will work on two machines. so if you need to run two Resolve Studio machines but do not need Fusion Studio standalone, then the licence key is best. if you need Fusion Studio, then you should go for the Fusion dongle. in our case we have one of each, since there are three of us, but only one (me) needs Fusion Studio. as a side note, i should mention that one of the two main reasons that we need the Studio version is that you cannot import 10 bit footage without it. we have GH5 footage at 10 bit, and without Studio, neither Resolve nor Fusion will read it. you do also get more transitions and many other nice things with the Studio version. you also get the ability to collaborate on the same project (but i have found this non-trivial to set up).

    • @VFXstudy
      @VFXstudy  5 лет назад

      Thanks for sharing. Are you sure regarding the 10 bit? It's not listed on the feature comparison, but also I remember using DPX and EXR files with 16 bit in the free Fusion version some time ago. I would think that it should be possible though I haven't tried it in Resolve. Regarding the effects library in Resolve agreed, there's more available in the Studio version compared to the free version.

    • @juliandarley
      @juliandarley 5 лет назад

      @@VFXstudy i am not sure where i read it, but specifically i recall that only Resolve Studio can play 10 bit H264. i will gladly call BMD on tuesday (after bank holiday easter monday) and check. this affects us very directly, because at max res, the GH5 records in 422 10 bit 4k, and this will definitely only open in Resolve Studio. i have tried it in the non-studio version and all you get is audio. as the GH5 is such a popular camera (deservedly so) i think this is significant. if you record in 8 bit, Resolve non-studio may work, but i have not tested it. as we are trying to do cinema quality green-screen keying, we are going for maximum quality - if only we could get 444 Raw from the GH5 we would. however, i doubt that will be offered as a firmware upgrade, more's the pity. for that, we shall have to wait for the BMD Pocket Camera (which i am told is back ordered to october 2018 in the UK).

  • @juliandarley
    @juliandarley 5 лет назад +2

    at 5:20 you mention that in Resolve, you will have to go back to the project and fish out the Fusion comp, but, as you mention at 7:10, you can export any fusion comp out of resolve so that it becomes a standalone fusion comp. (as you show) the operation is in File > Export Fusion Composition. given that you have to save a comp in Fusion anyway, this does not seem like a very big impediment to going between Resolve and Fusion (and i am a great believer in making things easy and seamless, so i do not say this lightly!)

    Can you export the scene with the camera, markers, and plate after 3D camera tracking in Resolve/Fusion? To be used in Maya and other software for 3D layout and VFX

    • @VFXstudy
      @VFXstudy  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Alex. Yes, that should be possible. Look into the FBXexporter node, that can export both 3D geometry and cameras from Fusion into FBX and other 3D formats. A tracked camera from Fusion should be no different than a manually created/ animated camera in a 3D scene. I assume there is something Maya compatible in the export list. I don't have much experience with this tool yet, but I remember people discussed some issues and workarounds with it in Resolve 15 with this tool. In Fusion standalone it should be fine but if you run into problems in Resolve you might want to check the BMD forums on this tool.

    at 6:17 you mention the problem of Fusion not liking MediaIn and MediaOut when copying a comp from Resolve, however one can now use Loader and Saver in Resolve instead of MI and MO. i have not tried it, but perhaps that will cure the particular problem.

    • @VFXstudy

      Correct, you can. But than you are linking again to the filesystem and do not link to the media pool and back to the edit timeline - which presumably is the main purpose in Resolve. • @VFXstudy
      @VFXstudy  4 года назад +3

      You could even start with the free version in Resolve or the free Version of Fusion 9 as a beginner. If it's right for you, it depends: Do you want to learn compositing - then yes, it's a great tool. And for VFX, compositing is at the center and good to understand even if you do stuff like Mattepaitning or Particle Syms later. Regarding the choice of the tool: Fusion is good but is not the industry standard at the moment. If you plan on working for a major VFX studio you probably need to look into NUKE - the commercial version is pricy and there are pros and cons but it is simply the dominating tool at facilities such as ILM, DNEG, etc. If you are just learning or working on your own, you might not care about that and Fusion can, for the most part, achieve the same tasks.

    What is the difference between Fusion and Black magic Fusion??

    • @VFXstudy
      @VFXstudy  3 года назад

      Blackmagic Design is the company developing Fusion. Both as Fusion tab in DaVinci Resolve and as a standalone application Fusion Studio.

    Short answer:
    Workflow and Organization - Slightly different workflow with fusion being more of a file editor
    Stability and Performance - resolve uses more ram and has slightly worse performance than fusion
    Actual Features: very close but resolve has slightly less features than fusion
    Conclusion:
    Free option - Fusion in resolve (very close to fusion stand alone version)
    Best option for VFX - Fusion studio

      More recent update: there are more and more ResolveFX effects available in Fusion in Resolve, which are not available in Fusion Studio. E.g., the color page denoise which is now available via ResolveFX in the Fusion tab. If you have other plugins for that in Fusion Studio you are fine, but this might add more of a feature difference now, especially since v17.

      Fusion was integrated in Resolve from v15 on. I recommend upgrading to v16 for better performance and stability though.

    I just want an free equivalent of Nuke Non-Commercial, will DaVinci Resolve work?

    • @VFXstudy
      @VFXstudy  3 года назад

      Depends on what you are doing. For a lot of stuff yes. For really heavy compositing you would do better with Fusion Studio. Also for anything that requires access to a render farm.

      @@VFXstudy Like merging passes, tweaking alpha, doing some kind of roto hear and there, using glows, adding some camera lens effects, a bit of tracking for comp elements with potentially a 3D camera, working in deep comp with ACES and open .exr ? That's pretty much it

    • @VFXstudy
      @VFXstudy  3 года назад

      @@PhO3NiX96 yes, Resolve should be fine for that.
      The feature set is there. For high performance stuff Resolve still struggles a bit, but you should be fine with what you are mentioning. However 3d camera tracking and optical flow tools are not available in the free version. If you need that you would need the Studio version of Reaolve (which includes Fusion Studio for free)

      Also while I'm at it, is it possible to have a free version of Fusion without getting Resolve?
      I don't wanna use Resolve, I just need the compositing part I will edit on Premiere anyways
