Worked like a charm! Great tutorial. Thorough and easy to understand so I could make adjustments on my own. I didn't have a screwdriver small enough to get into the teeth and separate but I was able to use long pushpins (tpins for poster boards). I added more and more from each end and they slowly spread the teeth apart. Removed the pins and whole mirror is rock solid now. Thank you!
thank you so much for posting this! I was able to fix my rear view mirror. Those spacers were hard to open up, once I did I had opened them up to much and the screw would not line up so I had to close them up a bit. This was the longest part of the process.
Instead of spreading out those roll pins you can just add some electrical tape to the outside diameter of those pins to make up for the play on that part that holds the mirror to the mount. I did this when I did the 99+ upper console / sunglasses holder swap in my 1998. Electrical tape provides grip to the metal piece too. works great
Thanks, your video was immensely helpful. I just acquired a 3rd gen 4Runner with the rearview mirror wobbles. My scratch awl has a nice taper on it to slide the tubes onto. On the opposite side of the teeth the tube has a flat that I used a flathead screwdriver on to push them up the taper of the awl little at a time on both ends.
HOLY CR**, You are not going to believe this, BUT, your mirror in your 3rd gen Taco is exactly the same as my 1996 Taco X-tend cab. Same mount. Same mirror. Mine has a simple cover and not all that cool overhead console. This one with the map lights was used in 89-97 4Runner. You could get it and install it, just leave the cover off, since you console covers it anyway.
