Canon 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens review with samples (APS-C and full-frame)

  • Canon have decided to release a 'less-expensive' kit lens for their full-frame cameras - less expensive than their popular 24-105mm f/4 'L' lens, anyway. With its darker maximum aperture, could it exceed the 'L' lens's image quality? And can Canon really find a market for a cheap, STM zoom lens for full frame? I'm not so sure - you decide.

    I had both of them and I kept the STM. Picture quality is indistinguishable and the STM is silent, lighter and AF works excellent in newer camera bodies for video than the original. At 24 F4 this lens is better than the original at F4 (remember this starts at F3.5). The new 24-105 is a hog and way too expensive, heavier and bigger than both of these without any noticeable improvement. I think this lens is honest, doesn’t pretend to be more than it is. New is cheaper than a beat-down F4 and with new cameras and their ISO ranges the F difference becomes negligible, as we all have primes for portraits.

      Facts 👍🏾
      I have both lenses and the 24 STM works better with my 90D, & adapted onto my R6 MKII. I have never been impressed with the 24 f/4. It produces soft photos to me and works well on my 5D MKIV & C100 MKII. The better lens for my 90D is consistently the 18-135 STM & Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8.

    As a street photographer, and preferring wide, I got this lens over the L just incase I need or want a longer reach. Seems a very decent capable lens to me, there's a lot more to making a great photo then "image quality" most cameras these days are capable of producing good image quality, what really matters is the image itself, the subject, content, framing, artistic merit etc. Most of the time I have the 17-40 f4 on my camera as I love the focal range for my street photography. And I never photographer brick walls and waste time comparing "sharpness" etc, what's the point! 🤷

    I was pleased with the honesty and directness of your review and your examples were good..yet I'm not certain they showed the lens to be quite as uninspiring as you said it was, and the weight reduction compared with either L lens is quite significant, not just slight as you said.

    I have both lenses and imo the IS and image sharpness is a little better with the non L on my 6D and 5Ds. The L lens was purchased as refurbished from Canon and I paid US $499.99 and the 24-105 f3.5-5.6 IS was the kit lens when I purchased the 6D. You can usually find the 24-105L attached to my 5Ds unless I need a fast prime and if that's the case I use the 35 f2 IS.

    awesome review, very concise. I am new to the DSLR photography. I have a used Canon 5D mark 2. My lens of choice (or best lens I own currently 9-2017) for flower photos is Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM, of which I bought used. I mainly photograph flower photos. I am looking into getting a 24-105mm lens and based on this video I think I might save up longer for the used Canon L 24-105 lens as I love bokeh and better image quality.

    Thanks for posting the review Chris. However, it is very negative. I have read Ken Rockwell's online written review and it really is full of praise of this lens. Perhaps it is because the lens is not a L lens that your review lacks objectivity. It shows how good Canon's marketing strategy of the red ring for their L series lens is in making people think that any lens without the red ring is vastly inferior.

    A very poor lens. I see it as a replacement for the 28-135, but this isn't a very wise option unless someone truly wants a cheap lens for picture taking. It doesn't offer stellar optical performance, and the price is only marginally cheaper than a "white box" 24-105 f/4L. Those sell all day everyday at $600-650 in the States and are brand new lenses taken from 6D and 5D kits.

    • @marcp.1752

      Silly comment from somebody who doesn't have a clue at all. I do have all, the "mighty" L and this STM - if you can read, and head over to Photozone, both scored 3 out of 5 Stars in terms of optical performance, also, the STM doesn't score so much behind the 2004 being advertised 24-105 F4L USM according to DxOMark.

    • @kevindiossi
      @kevindiossi 7 лет назад

      Marc P. Sorry you were that offended by my comment to reply this way. I have a clue, trust me. My suggestion is that if you're in the market for a $600-700 zoom for full-frame, a white box L-series lens is a much better option. It's weather sealed, has better optics, better build, and is a fixed aperture throughout the zoom range. The only positive marks I can possibly give the STM lens is that STM may provide smoother AF during video recording...

    • @marcp.1752
      @marcp.1752 7 лет назад +2

      I do own both, the L and the STM, and the STM is for real not noticeable really behind, as being said before. The STM does also have a better Zoom Ring, even if it's electronical (even the 50/1.2 L does it this way) and the Zoom Ring is not that narrow, it's IS is also newer, therefore a bit better. As a walk around lens, i do for sure use the STM, because i don't need a red ring "L" to pose around - anyway, the 24-105 L is by Design a average lens at best, and no comparsion by laws of Physics compared to the 24-70/F4L USM, or 24-70/2.8L II USM for Example. And i do shoot as a amateur since the late 80s. Have a great Time.

      @@marcp.1752 I do agree with you. I had both lenses for a while (the old L and the new STM), I ended up selling the L because I found the new one was significantly sharper at 24, IS is dead silent and the the stop advantage is easily compensated by the good IS. BTW, both lenses were equally soft at the longest distances, so I saw no real advantage of the old one. I think this lens is misunderstood (as it's not an L lens), but it's optically on par if not better than the original at half the price brand new.
