      He's honest to a point. He lies about the kinds of steroids he used. Why, I don't know-- but that seems to be a huge point of contention with a lot of these guys. It gets to a point where a lot of them think, "Well, it's all FAKE-- one big lie, so why not lie about THIS?" Just part of the whole facade...

      @@MontaukFilms7 1:59:55 Atlas said Backlund wasn't that hot with the belt. The numbers state something different. He was one of the top draws from 1978 to 1983 in the business, so elevating him to the top position didn't hurt. If he wasn't that hot with the belt, why would keep the belt on him for so long? He was obviously a decent enough draw to warrant such a lengthy run, second only to Bruno's first run with the belt.

      I'd hope so. Bruno literally carried the company for years. If it wasn't for him, hulk hogan never would have seen the light of day. Every fan and wrestler in the business should tip their hat to the guys that molded the business into what it was and carried it in times before cable television. You didn't even know what happened unless you'd go to house shows or read about what happened in a title match in a newspaper or something. Insane how that works.

      No offense taken at all, we like to know what the folks watching enjoy. Sometimes we're at the mercy of the clock, and if I let Tony go without reeling him back in, we can lose valuable taping time. I think this particular episode was the last one of the shoot, the powers that be were up our ass about being there so late on a Friday night (they'll live). We usually tape 3-4 hours per session, which saves money, but we have to cut it close on the clock until that magical day comes when we can afford to have Tony come in weekly!

    Tony gave extensive comments for Bob Backlund's book. In Bob's book, Tony praised Bob for not going out much with the boys and going home after shows to be with his family instead. Tony also said in Bob's book that Bob drew fans during his first WWF title run. Here, Tony seems to contradict what he said in Bob's book (by seeming to criticize Bob as unfriendly for not hanging with the boys and for suggesting Bob did not draw fans). I'd like him to clarify. (Personally, from what I saw as a young teenager attending MSG shows in the late 70s and early 80s, Backlund was very popular with fans.) Great interview!

    • @bostonwrestlingcom
      @bostonwrestlingcom  6 лет назад

      Appreciate your comments, Joe. Any particular questions, please leave them here and I'll try to get them into our next studio session. In my conversations with Tony about Bob, he had the utmost respect for him as a an athlete, his commitment to being a champion and to representing the business well to fans, as well as being a solid family man.

    • @johnstrika9170
      @johnstrika9170 5 лет назад +1

      You're sorely mistaken about Backlund being a draw. If you compare the crowds SSBG got at MSG to Backlund, there was no comparison. Backlund's failure as a draw was one of the main reasons they had to do the Zybysko/Sammartino feud. Proof of that is who main evented the Shea Stadium show? It wasn't the champion. It was Bruno and Larry.

    • @jallenw
      @jallenw 4 года назад +2

      @@johnstrika9170 Backlund drew big crowds and was very popular though he had run his course by the end. They would not have kept the belt on him for almost 6 years if he couldn't draw. SSBG drew big crowds also. But so did Backlund. Vince Sr. may not have wanted to stay with SSBG because of his drug and personal issues. Plus they were running out of "good guy" challengers for him so they would probably have had to him turn him babyface. SSBG would not have been as good as a babyface not just because his in-ring skills were mediocre. The Zbyszko/Bruno feud lasted only 6 months or so. And according to Ken Patera he and Backlund outdrew Zbyszko/Bruno in some cities. The Bruno/Zbyszko feud wasn't conjured up because Bob couldn't draw. They saved Backlund v Race for the MSG card that followed the Shea spectacular rather than waste it at the Shea card which was going to draw anyway.

    I like how Tony dodged the steroid question. All those who are guilty… Dodge the question. And for him to say that Sting and Flair were not juicing, I guess that's the typical "the boys stick together" mantra. But aside from that, which is expected, I think Tony Atlas is one of the most entertaining, truthful, and insightful interviews of anyone in the wrestling business! You really goes into detail, to back up his opinions, and he speaks complete common sense, with a wisdom, that very few "old school wrestlers" have. Excellent interview!👍👍👍👍

When Tony mentioned the Rock and attention from woman I was reminded of when I saw him with Mark Henry at Golds Venice in Nov, 98. I was talking to Mark in the front area where the desk is and The rock was standing by himself by the pro shop. Years later most of the gym's members would be at the front to talk to him.

  • @boogietunk

    Enjoyed the video. Tony was one of my favorites. Glad to see he doing good. But my question of the video is this, why so much hate on the Superstar? I mean he wasn't the only reason why wrestling died down in the late 80's early 90's. People was getting tired of the cartoon wrestling that the WWF/WWE was pushing. NWA wasn't into that type of product. Like I said great video but in my opinion on Superstar being the cause of the down fall I got to disagree with ya on that one.

    • @bostonwrestlingcom
      @bostonwrestlingcom  6 лет назад +1

      Appreciate your thoughts, Boogie. As a matter of fact, we're going to be doing a full-length episode on the scandal itself in the near future as Tony was dealing with his homelessness and drug issues during the period of time. If you research the WWF's steroid / drug / sex scandal in the early 90's, the biggest anti-wrestling cheerleader was Billy Graham. And there was a lot to be said about some of the wrongs that were going on at the time, which ultimately saw a plague of young deaths in the industry over the next 20 years or so. However, as Billy went to media outlet to media outlet pitching his stories and the sins of professional wrestling, he created many of the stories that were complete lies. Those lies kept the stories hot and in the news, eventually with WWE in some risk of going out of business if Vince McMahon went to jail. For wrestling fans, it led to a four year period of a tough product to watch. For those in the industry, a lot of people lost jobs and/or saw their income drop dramatically.

      Boston Wrestling MWF appreciate the input. I'm not trying to say what he did wasn't wrong. Superstar even admitted that himself. I started watching in the 70's as a kid. Enjoyed every bit. Then after the Rocky movie and Hogan's career sky rocketed enjoyed that as well. Put as I got older the superhero stuff for me just got old. I guess we have to agree to disagree. Lol. He's right about Japan. The culture is HUGE on personal honor, and thats why you'll see no litter, no arguing over trivial things etc. There is a sense of consideration to your fellow man on a large scale that a lot of places do not have..If you lie, or disturb someone, or make a scene in public, youre as outcast as a criminal. Btw, The Legion of Doom left because Hawk tested dirty for Placidyls, and Animal hurt his back in handicap matches fulfilling the engagement. It had nothing to do with steroids.

    "Two or three hundred bodybuilding titles..."
    Sure thing, Jan. Atlas is flat-out lying. He won the Mr. USA three times and probably won a number of minor amateur titles, but 200-300? No way.
    Tony's entertaining, and I like his views on the inner workings of the WWE and so on, but he BSs a lot.

    You need legs to win real bodybuilding contests. Even in the era Tony was in. He had 23" arms and no thighs and 14" calves. As opposed to a guy like Ivan Putski who had huge thighs and calves as a wrestler.

Wish we could let Tony go on forever, but, we have to tape five to six HOURS per studio session with Tony due to appearance, travel, accommodation, food, studio costs, etc. We'd love to have Tony with us weekly to be able to do so. You can help the cause for a couple of dollars per month at www.patreon.com/bostonwrestling

    The clown car, with an acrobat, a clown, and a strong man. A complete circus. Tony said it. That’s all the WWE is now. That’s what Vince has made it. But that’s not what the fans want. That is what is jammed down our throats. That’s why after the first match or so, I turn it off, and watch reruns of the Big Bang Theory.

  • @mikeford4089

    "Only 5 wrestlers were on steroids" ?! Are you kidding me, Greg Valentine said that they were all on steroids. The WWF had it's own doctor who would leave all the wrestlers brown baggies full of drugs. He also went to jail for doing it. Yeah, he only did steroids 2 months a year. As soon as you stop taking DBOL, it's like letting air out of a balloon. Every time the Ultimate Warrior left the WWF and came back, he was way smaller. After a couple of months he was huge again, how do you think that happens?

    • @bostonwrestlingcom
      @bostonwrestlingcom  6 лет назад

      Hey Mike - appreciate the message. Where in the interview is this stated (if you recall)?

    • @mikeford4089
      @mikeford4089 6 лет назад +2

      ruclips.net/video/JBTOL3foihg/видео.html Tony - "Everybody Didn't do it. Back in my day there were maybe 5 wrestlers in the whole freakin world that did steroids. 5!" He didn't even think that Macho Man was on it, really?! Rey mysterio was on it, never mind Macho Man. Jamie Noble was suspended for testing positive. I like Tony but as Gorilla would say, he's a fountain of misinformation. Or at least half truths.

    • @bostonwrestlingcom
      @bostonwrestlingcom  6 лет назад

      I don't think Tony was clear enough in this instance. I believe he's talking about when he broke into the business in the first half of the 70's, when if you looked at the rosters in Georgia and the Carolina's, steroids wouldn't be the first thing that pop out at you!

    • @johnstrika9170
      @johnstrika9170 5 лет назад

      He was talking about the 70s,before Vince created "sports entertainment" so he could get around all the state athletic commissions and pump up his guys with all the steroids and painkillers he wanted, with no ramifications.

    What kind of camera do you shoot with to record in 360p in 2018 is a crime. Reach for your phone in your pocket and you have a 10000% better quality.

      Appreciate the message James - has nothing to do with the recording or the editing, seems to be an issue with the export over to RUclips. Didn't realize this until your message, thanks.

      Follow-up - had one of the folks at the studio we produce out of take a look at it, asked if you had your RUclips settings on 720 or 1080? He showed us both versions, and a remarkable difference if you use the 1080 RUclips setting.
