I've always been a huge fan of hers, but when I heard her do those mixed screams on pitch at the end of Circle With Me, it was a game changer. That is crazy.
I've listened to metal my whole life, in my late 30s, never heard anyone do something like that, lots of people can deliver singing and screaming, but that full mix - wow
Abso-freakin-lutely! Spiritbox - The Mara Effect live at Silversound is just amazing!! It's a definite must listen/watch for anyone into or new-to Spiritbox.
Courtney is very talented and from what I understand a very genuine and kind person. I have also read that she and Tatiana have a good relationship. I think you would really like Tatiana's One Take performance of "Judgement and Punishment.
LaPlante is pronounced with silent e. Most Canadian names are pronounced as if in French not Spanish. She along with Alissa White-Gluz, Melissa Bonny, Vicky Psarakis, and of course, Tatiana Schmayluk are the ruling goddesses of clean+harsh vocals imho. And you just can't fake it in a one -take or live show. As you noticed it's the transition back and forth between false and true vocal chords that is quite difficult to do very quickly. And mixing the fry and false at all, as Tatiana can do, is quite risky and likely damaged Angela Gossow's voice.
Marcela Bovio is not very well known as a screamer (or at all, she does a lot of background work), but of all the females with lovely clears, she had perhaps the most brutal growl.
I feel like everyone sees Courtney say "I did it" at the end of Rule of Nines and says "I want to be her friend" And you're right about her screaming, it's kind of unique because you can still hear notes. Most harsh vocals don't have any pitch to them.
I'm pretty late on this, btw she is doing false chord screams (I think), for the most part she is doing the tone called Yelling, you can hear that a lot in many new school melodic hardcore bands, and it is not that unusual to hear the full voice here and there, is a cool adding that not everyone can do, I had to learn it as it was a thing a part because if isn't done properly it can become very dangerous very fast. My english is not good at all but I hope you understood what I meant. I suggest to listen to the song "Ghost" from the band Counterparts to get what I'm saying, the singer does pretty much the same thing. Obviously she is amazing in the last part of Circle With Me and I don't get how tf can someone be able to switch that fast and still be in tone on the cleans, but for the rest of the song, is not that unusual, that's all
Love Spiritbox so much! My 6 year old daughter listens to them exclusively now, she adores them, especially Circle with Me and their song Secret Garden.
"how does she do this?" - well, mary z on her channel 'voicehacks' explains it pretty well. it's definetly worth a visit :) my favorite is her trying screamin on helium
If you want to hear a performance of a female vocalist, that is so raw and emotionally powerful as can be, you should watch a performance of Dr. Otep Shamaya Esq. . Otep - My Confession (live for proving she does it really, studio for the full experience with better understandable lyrics) Otep was the woman, that inspired Tatiana from Jinjer to get into extreme vocals. She thought, "Dude is really good!" until her friend who introduced her to this band told her, that it's a woman.
Very cool just ran into your channel, awesome that you did three excellent songs from this Great band in one video with that a huge thumbs up 👍🏽 and a well deserved sub.
Excellent reaction - I Can highly recommend you to jump Down the Nightwish rabbit Hole - focus on Floor Jansen as lead singer ans start with the live concert from Wackwn 2013 - most Will start with Ghost Love Score, Romanticide and Storytime. However Shudder before the beautiful and Ever Dream and on and on….😂
So good! I love all of their stuff too. My favorite is Belcarra. The video is wicked! Another one that is a fan favorite is Blessed be. Constance will break your heart. It's so emotional . especially if you take the time to research the back story.
Definitely Constance, makes so many people cry. Also some of their older songs like Mara Effect (all 3 parts), Trust Fall, Electric Cross, Bleach Bath and Blessed Be. These guys are definitely on the catchier side of metal 😊 Great reaction btw ❤ Courtney while not the best singer in the world is an amazing songwriter and her technique is perfect for her instrument (that's years of experience for you) and coupled with their band's music, they make such an amazing team of game changers in the music scene in general.
you can react to "Spiritbox - Blessed Be [Live for SiriusXM] | Next Wave Virtual Concert Series", in the world of metal there are many super talented women, after listening to "spiritbox" and "jinjer", I think you are ready , to listen to anything, you can listen to "nightiwish" and their songs live with their current vocalist "floor janson", or their first vocalist "tarja", (I recommend you listen to them live), "floor" did a great show at their concert in germany in 2013, you can also listen to the live concerts of "arch enemy" (with their current vocalist Alissa), so you can see the vocal capacity of these spectacular women, the concerts of "Tatiana" (jinjer) , they are also spectacular, you can also react to "Angela Gossow" (Arch Enemy's first vocalist) in her concert in japan, so many names of women with so much talent and songs that I can give you that this would take too long, keep in mind those names, believe me he doesn't tell you pcionas, there is also the band, "epica" with simone, etc etc.. etc....

Bleach Bath is one of their older songs and I love it!!
Screaming, one way is to learn the fundamentals of Kargyraa. (other types of throat singing will help too) It's not that hard to figure out after you understand that. (assuming you of course have decent breathing/support) Learning to scream effortlessly, (which is very important + the different techniques to get different sounds) that's the time consuming part. Like with singing it's a matter time and consistent good habit building practice to build it up and get that muscle memory going.
Yeah, there's no such thing as a bad Spiritbox song. They have some more live stuff too. It was on Sirius Liquid Metal I believe. My recommendations are Blessed Be, The Mara Effect live at Silverside Sound(actually 3 songs), Sunkiller. Secret Garden is nice too and Constance as well but it's a real tear jerker.
Constance is great, one of my favorites Blessed Be I highly recommend you check out! And as some others have said, check out their older Mara Effect stuff too!
Vir a um canal de react e escrever tranquilamente em Português, sabendo que a criadora de conteúdo e BR, é algo tão bom! 😆 Excelente react! 😎 Não sei se já ouviste a banda Epica. Se ainda não, recomendo. Especialmente a canção Storm The Sorrow.
Just found your channel, I really enjoy your reactions, and the fact you have to volume high enough to actually listen. I have a recommendation for you, a band called Shadow of intent, and specifically the heretic prevails, melancholy and of fury, three songs from each of their albums as you can see the progression of the band.
Yep, she's amazing! I cry a lot when I hear Spiritbox. Watch the video for "Blessed Be" or "Constance". If you like live stuff watch the performance they did for Sirius XM
You absolutely need to check out Spiritbox - The Mara Effect live at Silverside Studio. Others have mentioned it in the comments as well. It's a bit longer than your typical 'song', as it's a 3 songs kinda combined into one set (The Mara Effect pt.1, pt.2, & pt.3), but it is so worth it!!
i’d definitely recommend constance for sure! i’d also go for Secret Garden or The Summit. Another band i can recommend is As Everything Unfolds! They have an album and an older EP. Some songs i can recommend are Stranger In The Mirror, Grayscale, Wither, Divided :)))
I've gotta listen to more Spiritbox myself. Out of the Opera-ish/Dark/prog metal whatever, the sound the most relevant to me. Shit, they even sampled some techno. Great reation!
hello Jami Nunes!, please check out a japanese band called Dir En Grey, they from Japan, their vocalist called Kyo has a 6 octave vocal range, possibly even higher, up to the 8th octave. His clean vocals are absolutely amazing, and he's mastered every type of growl and scream. He's known to switch voices completely mid-song or even mid-sentence. His voice bottoms at A1, and he's hit into the 8th and possibly 9th octave live (debated on whether or not falsetto and whistle notes count, but he belted out the G#7 from the diaphragm). Check Vinushka eng sub LIVE HD to see how insane his vocal abilities are.
A suggestion: check out Maki Oyama. She has done a couple of One Take challenges. And several collaborations, including with Aldious, and Asterism before that. Power and grace.

Now, sing something as you drop back, allow the harsh to escape, then start signing again. Don't push it... just let it happen.
Sooo, I saw Spiritbox at the Fillmore in Silver Spring, MD two months ago. It was an awesome show and you should watch the performance of Constance from that show. There was a special guest that played the saxophone. What I have noticed here on RUclips is that was the only show he performed on. You can find that performance on Sean Maxwell's channel. He posted the whole show. Enjoy!!!
New suggestion for you as it seems you may be reading my suggestions since you have hit two of them. This one is a little different. Darko US; Donna and Come Home. If you were to do three pick your poison for the third song. A little back story, the shock value for the singer Tom Barber is that no one knew he had clean vocals!!! He was in a band called Chelsea Grin (very heavy) and this is his latest project. Once again two songs that have deep meanings.
The more I hear from Spiritbox, the more I like them. Jami, if you want to hear some more great growling, check out the black & white video of Angelina Jordan singing I Put A Spell On You in the style of Screamin' Jay Hawkins, the original artist. I'll provide a link: ruclips.net/video/nwFloCPXzCs/видео.html
I really enjoyed your reaction (as I did your first one), but this one struck a chord as you said certain things that echo exactly my thoughts. I've never enjoyed any band as much as I do Spiritbox, who I came across around two years ago, first hearing Holy Roller. I remember thinking wow, this is too heavy for me (not then having very much, if any, experience of metal) - yet immediately had to listen again as I realised I really enjoyed its energy (the creepy official video that the band filmed themselves is also fun). I explored their other music and couldn't find a track I didn't like - but Rule of Nines is still my special favourite - it's such a beautiful and intense track. We women can sometimes be the harshest critics of other women, but just like you said, Courtney is such a genuinely lovely person that you find yourself wanting to be her friend - every interview I've seen or read backs this up - she is completely honest and genuine, and her husband Michael Stringer is also a lovely guy from what I see and they are such a great couple. Somehow, Spiritbox tracks have a particular effect on me - I get goosebumps every time, and whilst almost everyone cries at the official music video of Constance (the original release as opposed to the more recent acoustic one, which is beautiful in its own right) and I do too, I also get happily tearful at (for example) the swelling chorus of Circle With Me - and I might have imagined it, but it seemed to me that you did too! One thing I remember reading about the live one-take of Circle With Me - Courtney mentioned that she is so self-critical that she filmed the one-take five times, pretty much in quick succession, and decided she liked the fourth one best! Amazing vocal stamina...
Mara Effect live could be a video in itself. Perennial, Eternal Blue (title track of their debut LP), Secret Garden and Belcarra are all really good too, and almost never get requested. Oh, and Trust Fall. Song is beautiful, including Courtney’s voice layered in a classic “round” to close it out.
Enjoyed ur reaction.. btw.. Plz checkout indianfolkmetal band called Dymbur. The song Child Abuse & Rape Culture. These guys write song on sensitive issues. Would love to see ur reaction to their song Child Abuse which has elements of folk instruments and rap
Now do Arch Enemy for the trifecta. Alissa is the third and oldest of the female screamer/singers. "The Eagle Flies Alone" "Handshake With Hell" "The World Is Yours"
I've always been a huge fan of hers, but when I heard her do those mixed screams on pitch at the end of Circle With Me, it was a game changer. That is crazy.
That was so cool! I just heard that song for the first time by watching this video hahah :)
I've listened to metal my whole life, in my late 30s, never heard anyone do something like that, lots of people can deliver singing and screaming, but that full mix - wow
She is crazy bro
She is one of the best vocalists out there and I'm willing to die on that hill.
Her Circle With Me one take is my favorite. That scream to clean to scream at the end is insane control
She literally harshes on "all" only. Repeatedly. On one word each time. Yeah that's control.
Spiritbox - The Mara Effect live at Silverside Sound is a must.
Absolutely, yes.
Yes, yes and yes. All the nuances in a marvelous performance.
Yeppp
Yuhhhhp
Abso-freakin-lutely! Spiritbox - The Mara Effect live at Silversound is just amazing!! It's a definite must listen/watch for anyone into or new-to Spiritbox.
The ending of her one take version of Circle with me always gets me so emotional, literal tears in my eyes, marvelous
Courtney is very talented and from what I understand a very genuine and kind person. I have also read that she and Tatiana have a good relationship. I think you would really like Tatiana's One Take performance of "Judgement and Punishment.
I love how you let the song play rather than pause it 100 times! 💯
There is a third version of Holy Roller with Ryo Kinoshita because apparently one of the hardest songs of that year needed to go slightly harder.
Absolutely gutted that Crystal Lake have split up!
*SPIRITBOX reaches new level and heights with "Rotoscope".* 🎵🎵🔥🔥😈🔥🔥🎵🎵
Courtney is a goddess. Idk how she sings and screams the way she does, but I absolutely love her. And Spiritbox. ❤️ 🖤 🎶
You could scream like that, like everything, it’s practise and technique!
This is why we love Courtney.
She is absolutely talented.
Blessed Be is my favorite one of them. A great and complete performance of her talent.
Yes and the video has such deep meaning. My fav music video of theirs by far.
LaPlante is pronounced with silent e. Most Canadian names are pronounced as if in French not Spanish.

Check out Linzey Rae with The Anchor for some deep growls/clean transitions as well.
Except she is from the USA and moved to Canada. :)
The e isn't silent to make it "plant", but the e is very soft and modifies the sound of the a to a softer aaaaa pronouced like "plaaant"
Marcela Bovio is not very well known as a screamer (or at all, she does a lot of background work), but of all the females with lovely clears, she had perhaps the most brutal growl.
@@IdiotPosterBoy Plesse give us a link of where she's growling. I only know her beautyful voice from Ayreon but not her dark side 😯.
Her voice is so dynamic. I can't wait to hear what they do next.
Oh man you definitely need to do Constance with the music video and reading the lyrics. Its a real trip.
theres so many incredible women in metal these days
I love when Courtney sidles up to the mic like a pissed off Silverback.
I like your format, you never pause the video to give feedback. I like it this way.
The guitar riffs and drum fills are the icing on the cake
I feel like everyone sees Courtney say "I did it" at the end of Rule of Nines and says "I want to be her friend"
And you're right about her screaming, it's kind of unique because you can still hear notes. Most harsh vocals don't have any pitch to them.

As a vocalist myself I will say once I learned how to do harsh vocals correctly it gave me even more control on my clean voice.
seeing them live and being part of the crowd for Holy Roller was MENTAL
Love the little personna changes she does while she switches from smooth to hard vocals.
If you want to hear a performance of a female vocalist, that is so raw and emotionally powerful as can be, you should watch a performance of Dr. Otep Shamaya Esq. . Otep - My Confession (live for proving she does it really, studio for the full experience with better understandable lyrics)

OTEP is freaking amazing 😍
Guano Apes too, but without screams
Listen to some Arch Enemy "Deceiver, Deceiver" and "Handshake with Hell" 🤘🔥💯
Great Reaction! You should check out Tatiana's One Take Vocal Performance of "Judgement and Punishment."
Tatiana Shmayluk is far better looking and a far better singer...
I cant but help but feel so emotional during their songs.. I cant tell you what it is but just hits you different!
Very cool just ran into your channel, awesome that you did three excellent songs from this Great band in one video with that a huge thumbs up 👍🏽 and a well deserved sub.
#JamiNunes, you're so sweet. I love you very much, and I really enjoy watching you react to different types of music.
Her voice is fantastic as aways, but can we appreciate that bass
Really enjoyed your reaction alot. Spiritbox is a phenomenal band and courtney is my favorite female vocalist of all time. 🤘💙😊
The transitioning from screaming to cleans is crazy especially at the end of circle with me

The pitch shifted sing scream is better in the one take version than in the studio song, its crazy
I fell in love with this band the moment I heard them. They're all incredibly talented but Jesus Christo Courtney is a beast beyond
Love her .....almost as much as the Queen Tatiana. Tatiana makes men blush with her growls.
Sei Meravigliosa e hai un sorriso Fantastico😍
Part 3 coming soon?!?!?! LOL!! They released a 3 song EP on Riserecords 23 hrs ago. Get it done !!!
Constance is great, one of my favorites Blessed Be I highly recommend you check out! And as some others have said, check out their older Mara Effect stuff too!
If you like Canadian bands and powerful singers Unleash the Archers is another rabbit hole. 🤘🤘🤘

You definitely need to check out Constance and Blessed Be, fantastic songs both. Constance especially.
Great reaction Jami... Yes, they are mind blowing..! no words is the best reaction sometimes. cheers
You should react to their song Secret Garden. Her vocals are absolutely amazing. It’s just clean singing.
You need to listen to Constance 100%, but also try an older song from them, perennial is amazing!
She was in a previous band called iwrestledabearonce. Wasn't hers originally but she started strong with it.

Another band i can recommend is As Everything Unfolds! They have an album and an older EP. Some songs i can recommend are Stranger In The Mirror, Grayscale, Wither, Divided :)))
Constance, trust fall and blessed be are all incredible
speechless
If you havent you should look at Constance by Spiritbox, it really shows a different side to the band and Courtney's vocals
I saw the suggestion in the comments and yes The Mara Effect live at silversound is a MUST. It is a longer video but a lot for you to unpack.
opening rif is DOOOpe
Check out: The Anchor - Miscreation! Linzey is absolutely killing it
Secret Sidenote: Their older song Trustfall is a super underrated banger with amazing vocals and layering!
How do you do the quick-change from clean/harsh/clean?
You do it by employing two very different parts of the vocal tract.
Just about anyone can do a simple harsh vocal by dropping back into a comfy couch, and exhaling (without engaging the cords) and make that sound that signifies 'exhaling out the end of a tough day'.... we've all done it.
Now, sing something as you drop back, allow the harsh to escape, then start signing again.
Don't push it... just let it happen.
You need to do Constance by SpiritBox next
Two beautiful women on the screen here for sure! 😉
12:32 SCTV fans will recognize that she is in 3D here.
Oh and though it's a different type band but, with an amazing female singer, check out THE BOTTOM OF THE RIVER by DELTA RAE.😊
I love blessed be.
Will Ramos covers holy roller would like too see you react to his version.
Damn!
all one-takes are +1
but "circle with me" is next level shit...
"it could ALL (scream) BE (clean) YOURS (scream)!"
hi u can react to i wrestled a bear once with courtney...thats good stuff too
The more I hear from Spiritbox, the more I like them. her and Tati are the queens of contrast...
You really should do the songs CONSTANCE and THE SUMMIT.😊
Courtney and Tatiana both have good cleans but I much prefer Tatiana's growls.
You should listen Harpers Cover of Holy roller. I think she is 9 at the time
Mara Effect live could be a video in itself. Perennial, Eternal Blue (title track of their debut LP), Secret Garden and Belcarra are all really good too, and almost never get requested.
Oh, and Trust Fall. Song is beautiful, including Courtney’s voice layered in a classic “round” to close it out.
If you want to learn some of the techniques for extreme vocals I would recommend looking into Melissa Cross's lessons.
The song "Belcarra" is rather dark but, intriguing.
Que bella, eres de familia latina cierto?
Brasileira (:
😍🌹❤
You definitely need to see the actual video to Holy Roller
Reacts to Infected Rain please
Check out the band Arch Enemy, Handshake with hell, or Nemesis live from Waken would be good intros
If you learn and train you can do it. You saying you can't is what's stopping you from being able to do it.
You should check out Courtney's work from iwrestledabearonce.
Now do Arch Enemy for the trifecta. Alissa is the third and oldest of the female screamer/singers.
"The Eagle Flies Alone"
"Handshake With Hell"
"The World Is Yours"
Karyn Crisis beat her by about 20 years. Lol. But Alissa is amazing.
