Wow!!! So excited... I signed up for your class Lauren!!! Courtney's vocals are very impressive... I can only hope to be half as good as you beautiful ladies. 💜🖤💜
Lauren literally whipped me in the face with her hair while she was headbanging a couple of times, while she was on tour with Halocene. 😂 Adore her and her voice! 💜
I saw them live a couple of days ago, here in Athens, Greece! It was an amazing concert! I was expecting them to open with Rule of Nines, but it was the fourth or fifth song they sang. It's my favorite of theirs. ❤
Videos like this show me why some people blow up and some don’t. All the small little tricks and expressions that Courtney displays here probably go unnoticed by most people. I knew I loved her sound but now I’m learning why
Chris! What a fantastic video! Spiritbox, Lauren and musical discussion between two pros all in one wonderfully conversational video? Amazing, I could listen to this type of thing all day long!
One of the reasons I think I transitioned well(ish) from being a choir geek to singing rock and metal was that the choirs I was in always encouraged facial expressions, especially when they helped with pitch or articulation (e.g., lifting the eyebrows to help lift the soft palate). This was such a cool analysis. I've noticed I make the "tunnel" with my mouth like Courtney does, so it was interesting to hear how that affects resonance.
This just popped in my recommended. wow this was fantastic. I loved how you both went into the technique and then just all the little subtle things that she did in the way that she saw him. And to be honest I’ve never heard of her I don’t lynch me for saying that. But I am definitely going to be checking out all of her music because it was just absolutely amazing. Her voice and how she sings is beautiful. I am liking and subscribing. I loved how you covered the performance. The stops and conversation in between were timed so well. The vibe is great and you can sense the appreciation how much you enjoyed her performance. It just made the video even better. I am so glad I found this channel. I can’t wait to hear more.
Hey Chris, I’m new here I just wanted to say that I watched the first video of the free lessons that you offer, the first part of the “freeing your voice” lessons! It was amazing, thank you for making this available to anyone. A lot of vocal coaches claim to know a lot but then don’t make it accessible for the poor 😂. So thank you for being 1 in a million!
Bro Courtney LaPlante is a BOMB!!! Like she helped me get threw the worst of times in my life and it was back when she was apart of Iwrestledabearonce for any of you guys/girls who know who that is please follow me!!!!
Hi Chris, thanks for this video, very interesting and It's a pleasure to see in your program to Lauren babic, I love her voice.❤🤘, the video is incredible, very magistral class thank you very much.
If you haven’t, check out their song ‘electric cross’ - I think it’s only available on a single or short EP but it’s still my favorite song by them to this day and it’s one of the first released
This was the video that made me fall for Spiritbox. I absolutely love how she puts these little touches and improvisations in her live performances. There aren’t a lot of metal singers who are willing to stray very far from their studio performances, so it’s very refreshing!
We were encouraged in concert choir to not have the emotionless sort of thing. Well, at least those of us who were in audition aspects of choir, like Vocal Jazz. I straight up remember belting a few times during solos and adjudicators being blown away about how refreshing it was to listen to a choir that had emotion and feel to it.
Hi Chris and great video! I like this band, but the first female vocalist to amaze me with such an extreme vocal technique was Tatiana Shmayluk from the band Jinjer. She does growls and clean vocals. I can only recommend you to give it a try
The screaming thing where she drops to a speaking voice in the middle of screaming is very influenced by Keith Buckley of Every Time I Die. She cites him as an influence.
Hold on...wait wait wait! That is Lauren Babic?! OHH MAN! I've had her song "Ocean Floor" on my playlist for a long time and I LOVE that song! Holy crap! Lauren's voice is also freaking good! Anyway nice seeing you for the first time and greetings from Sweden
This was fun, loved hearing Lauren's input too. If you're gonna delve into more Spiritbox, would love to see you analyse The Mara Effect trilogy, some awesome stuff happening there. Studio, live, anything works!
I love Spiritbox so much and hearing you guys go deep into this version of Rule Of Nines was awesome! Would love to see a Dayseeker reaction, Rory Rodriguez has a voice that'll blow you away Chris 👍🏽
Excellent content, as always Chris! If you have time, I’d highly recommend Darius Tehrani’s one-take of Spite’s song “Hangman”. It’s so freaking gnarly
your comment about her precision in contrasting expression during the second verse, no!!!!!! she does the same exact expression and phrasing live and on the record! she’s really that good
OOOH LAUREN! Haven't heard her in a minute, she's so good! Just came across a Swedish(?) band called Smash Into Pieces, the vocalist has a super unique tone, I'd love to hear your thoughts! They have a newer track called Six Feet Under!
Saw Courtney live in May in NYC.... she's 100% as good live as she is on record. Not only one of THE best female voices in metal/rock, but maybe in the scene right now in general. She can be soft and melodic and immediately brutal and deep. Such a talent. Thanks Chris!
hi, great channel Chris . love your emotion talking about vocals. spirit box are superb, i saw them in belfast 2 nights ago !! my favourite band in the world. ive saw Courtney use a throat spray every other song, any of you guys know what that could be? thanks
Chris, this leads me to a subject I don't know if you've covered yet. I notice whenever Courtney or any other vocalist who uses massive amounts of distortion adds melody, they must dramatically decrease the amount of distortion they're creating to allow for the ability to sing melodic phrases. This level of distortion - what I'll call "growl", cannot co-exist with melody. Why not? I can turn up the gain on my guitar amplifier to 10 and still play a scale, but vocalists cannot growl a scale. Why can't we? One eventually must give way to the other. Add enough grit and at some point it becomes "growl." Once growl begins, melody goes away. At that point, our voices become a percussion instruments. We can growl one note, as in a scream with pitch, but it's impossible to growl a scale or an arpeggio or some other melodic phrase. Why does that happen? Why is it that at some point the grit becomes "growl", overwhelming the primary cords to where they stop being able to produce melodies? Who would you give as an example of a vocalist who comes closest to bridging the two - coming the closest to producing "growl" while still retaining the ability to sing melodies?
There's one thing I don't understand. In the screaming part when she does "Premoni... tion" which is lower, does she change position and her voice becomes a growl? I don't understand if it is precisely his "growl" that is very similar to the scream or whether he always maintains the same position. I don't know if I explained myself well
Hi Chris, great video as always! Looking through the description I noticed you also mentioned Andy Cizek. Did you make a mistake or will there be a collaboration with him too?
New sub here. I just came across your channel as I am currently in a Hi Ren reaction rabbithole and I love your way of breaking things down. A bit late to the party with that. Speaking of late to the party, you must be the only vocal analysist who hasn't reacted to and broke down Floor Jansen and Nightwish, there is a reason they are the most reacted to band on YT. Floor is often considered to be one of the most versatile vocalists out there, ranging from opera to metal growls and everything in between, with an ability to switch between singing styles and voices on a dime. If you do react to them, brace yourself, the fanbase is called an army and that is not an innacurate term. Generally people request Ghost Love Score live from Wacken 2013. It only shows a small part of what Floor is capable of but is a great start.
This is a singing channel where we help singers learn about their own voices. You’ll see in the title that this is also a vocal analysis video. If you want to just see a reaction or want to listen to the song without interruptions, you know where to look. Lots of great creators out there doing just that!
Bro, you and all these RUclipsrs really need to stop pausing so much. Some advice, do your intro, let the video play until about half way, then pause and comment a little, then let it play the rest, then do the end comments. It isn't necessary to comment constantly.
If i or other RUclipsrs do what you’re talking about, the video we create will not be cleared under the fair use act and the video could be blocked and result in a strike and a takedown notice. If you get three strikes, you’re done forever with RUclips. The consequences depend on the copyright owner and the content ID system isn’t always accurate so it’s always a risk. I have experienced this fury first hand with Sony and the Michael Jackson estate. I had to get legal counsel and work with a lawyer to create a strong case for fair use. The main thing they look for when deciding things manually is if there is use of frequent stops and lots of educational and insightful commentary. Since this is an education channel and I’ve been working with copyright owners step by step for many of these videos, I’m always getting a better idea of what is appropriate and what is needed to continue to run my business in an effective way.
This was so fun 💪🏼😤
Yes ! Please tell Courtney that we need a live take on Hysteria !
Now when will we get Courtney to guest on an analysis of Lauren's singing? 👀
and you didn't do a cover of this song why? lol you need to do some spiritbox covers
Wow!!! So excited... I signed up for your class Lauren!!! Courtney's vocals are very impressive... I can only hope to be half as good as you beautiful ladies. 💜🖤💜
Great to see you in this video. You and Chris work well together.

I'm so jealous lolol
うらやましいよ!
I fuckin love Lauren. She was literally the first female vocalist that I came across & slightly obsessed over. Her talent is thru the roof
They’re opening with Rule of Nines on tour at the moment. It’s just extraordinary.
That's cool! Rule of nines and Blessed Be are masterpieces, above most of the ones on the album in my opinion.
I’m seeing them in October !
I saw them live a couple of days ago, here in Athens, Greece!
It was an amazing concert!
I was expecting them to open with Rule of Nines, but it was the fourth or fifth song they sang. It's my favorite of theirs. ❤
The vocal " imperfections" makes it perfect ❤❤
Chris, Lauren, AND Courtney on one video?? RUclips about to melt from all the vocal power
I love the way she sounds on that last "forces", something about it just sounds good to me
Imagine if Chris & Lauren did a cover!!? I feel like their tones & screams would sound freakin' AWSOME TOGETHER!!!
I love Chris & Lauren's interactions together!!!
subdued
MORE LAUREN PLEASE!!!!
MUCH more coming! Be sure to sign up for the free course too!
I wasn't ready for this channel to release the babic, but I'm here for it
Helllllll yeah ladies!!!! 😍😍😍😍 Love the support and appreciation shown between women here. Absolute Icons 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍Great vid Chris!!
the ism thing the unique way one singer expresses a feeling is so important, it's why we have our favourite vocalists
Amazing, I could listen to this type of thing all day long!
by far, one of the top vocal performance i've seen on RUclips, what a joy to see your analysis on this one!
Lauren 100% ambushed me here, 🎉🎉
So pumped to see content with Chris and Lauren!
Awesome video! Need more of that Lauren, Liepe, LaPlante combo! ❤🔥
i love that lauren is wearing a veil of maya shirt. my favorite metal band.
I found Lauren babic again. thanks for this Channel ❤
So glad you went over this video. One of my absolute favorite screaming videos, and my favorite version of this song!
Can't wait for Lauren to do a collab with Will. ❤
me too!
This just popped in my recommended. wow this was fantastic. I loved how you both went into the technique and then just all the little subtle things that she did in the way that she saw him. YYYEEEEEESSSSSS I REMEMBER ASKING FOR THIS FOREVER AGO
I honestly feel like the Mara Effect live performance is still my favorite thing they've done.
Every new video released I see Chris with someone whom I admire way too much. You guys are amazing ♥︎
Chris, just stumbled upon your content and I love you going into the details!
Saw Lauren play as a special guest with Halocene in Cleveland at Bowling Alley/Concert Hall. It was something special.
Oh that's awesome!! I got to see here guest with Periphery... EPIC!!!
@@chrisliepe That would be epic!!

Hi Chris, thanks for this video, very interesting and It's a pleasure to see in your program to Lauren babic, I love her voice.❤🤘, the video is incredible, very magistral class thank you very much.
Lauren is a badass!

Yes yes yes…. Now a Lauren and Will Ramos collab. Make it happen Chris
ha... would be AWESOME
Please please please 🙏🏻🙏🏻

I straight up remember belting a few times during solos and adjudicators being blown away about how refreshing it was to listen to a choir that had emotion and feel to it.
My choir teacher would tell us to smile into certain notes to lift them and the pitch. He was fully aware of how the face affected notes.
I wish there were videos like this of Aleksandra Djelmash singing Destiny Potato/Sordid Pink songs. Lauren did a killer cover of Blue Sun years ago.
this is not a collab i expected, but awesome to see lauren here
She does have the HC chops, let us not forget her time in IWABO. She rules & so does SB
almost 400k man, congrats
Thanks!!! Only 2 more subs to go!!! :)
got it!!!!!!! yeahhh@@chrisliepe

Ah yes... I'm also a huge Jinjer fan. 🤘
Yep, Jinjer is amazing singer and performer. Her stage presence is sick.
You should listen to the live session of The Mara Effect. Is just perfection
Yes!! They need to, it’s such an amazing experience.
The screaming thing where she drops to a speaking voice in the middle of screaming is very influenced by Keith Buckley of Every Time I Die. She cites him as an influence.
ALL HAIL COURTNEY THE GOAT
There's your FC scream trigger sound Chris @6:07 I think it's a very good one to use 😅
Can you please make a vocal analysis for Brian Wille from Currents? His vocals are amazing
I love Lauren's feature on Pandora's Box by The Gloom In The Corner
Love this video! Such a joy to watch

"Chief' take-away is, Courtney is awesome. We all knew that already. BEST phrase..."Let yourself feel the music.:
Chris and Lauren in the same video!?!? Frick yeah! 💖💖💖
Excellent content, as always Chris! If you have time, I’d highly recommend Darius Tehrani’s one-take of Spite’s song “Hangman”. It’s so freaking gnarly
She is so amazing! Is she pitch screaming in this and in Circle with Me live take? I want to learn this so bad
hi, i used to learn this song, im a metal singer. i hope that one day you will make a vocal analysis of me Chris !
your comment about her precision in contrasting expression during the second verse, no!!!!!! she does the same exact expression and phrasing live and on the record! she’s really that good
sweet, a badass vocalist AND gorgeous... Lauren is litterally perfect.
Wow
OOOH LAUREN! Haven't heard her in a minute, she's so good!

Yeah was also super impressed when I first saw them live. Didn't expect her to do every song so perfectly, especially on the screams haha
I saw her when she had bronchitis and she still absolutely killed it lol
Her screams are actually beautiful, I can only think of the original textures singer who left this impression in me.
Brilliant
Omg yes. Textures. Forgotten Dutch glory 😅
Textures! That's a deep cut. Super underrated band.
hi, great channel Chris . love your emotion talking about vocals.

Great observation and questions! See any of my videos on “sing screaming” ! It will answer your question directly!!
You should get the track with her vocals only
Why does this dude exude so much youth pastor energy?
haha!
AAT DAAAWN...we ride!

I thought that was Chaney Crabb!
Should have a look at Chaney Crabb from Entheos. Undeniable bad-ass.
heaven in hiding by imminence please!
Hi Chris, great video as always! Looking through the description I noticed you also mentioned Andy Cizek. Did you make a mistake or will there be a collaboration with him too?
There WILL be a collaboration with Andy soon! :) We have PLANS!!!
@@chrisliepe Can't wait!
I Need One with Brad Amick from Halocene In A Future Video. @ChrisLiepe
Does it matter that her shoulders and chest is lifting when inhaling? I hear most vocal teachers say to avoid that.
It’s totally fine. Most coaches and students overthink things and this causes tension and boring voices :)
@@chrisliepe I'm the overthinker and yeah it does lol
and lauren didn't cover this song, why? lol
Shhhh... The'll be an opportunity to see her cover some Spiritbox in the very near future!!! :) !!!
@@chrisliepe hell yeah can't wait!!! love your vids and analysis btw. keep em coming.
Also, Chris, please do Angela Gossow! She was one of the OG female growlers. Such a beast! My biggest vocal influence.

Hi Chris! could you analyze Oliver Tree? i have the original isolated stems. where can i send you the tracks?
Queen Courtney! :)
Some guitarists made a deal with the devil for his hands. Courtney? She wanted his diaphragm.
It’s time for singing and then some screamin
