I’ve put off buying an HM-2W and recently been peeping on used prices WITH THE BOX! Before I thought “that’s for death metal and I’d be a poser if I didn’t learn that style..” but I’ve been nerding out a ton this year on circuits and DIY pedals and been inspired by you to try my hand this winter at building my own pedals and possible pedal line. I’ve also learned that it’s just a sound and it can be applied to whatever we wish, no limits or rules, just sounds and if it works it works. Cork sniffing as well as cheap ass clones, it don’t matter to me long as it works for a purpose and all pedals have a purpose.
Thank you for this video Jason. I am thinking of putting together a Doomgaze board and marrying the Doom Fuzz with the ethereal Reverbs of Shoegaze so this video definitely helped me out in narrowing down what pedals I want for that. My Main Board is my "Do Everything Board" for the Genres and Subgenres I like to play. I am an old school fan of Danelectro pedals so I have a few on my board. My main effects are Dirt, Reverb, and Echo/Delay. Here is my pedal layout. My board is a Gator Extra Large green board with two Gator Bricks (an 8 spot and a 5 spot) for power. In addition to those the milliamp draw on two pedals exceeds the bricks so two pedals require wall warts. I have all of these running into a power strip (so it just one cable underneath the board so out of sight) and I have an LED light strip under the board. My pedals run in the following order: Boss TU-3, Ibanez Tubescreamer Mini, ProCo Rat 2*, EHX Big Muff Pi*, Danelectro Cool Cat Chorus (18 volt model), Danelectro Dan Echo* (Slap Back setting), Danelectro Dan Echo* (Spacey setting), EHX Oceans 11 (mainly for Shimmer but does other things), Source Audio True Spring (mainly Surf style reverb), Orion Effekt Kafka (dark echo), Ibanez Echoshifter, Walrus Audio Slo (I use these to play around with on the fly as noisemakers and ethereal settings). *Means pedals was modified by Alchemy Audio. I cover a lot of genres but my wheelhouse is mainly Punk, Alt Country, and Garage Rock. I was over the moon when I found out my Dirt pedals covered Doom as well. The order is mainly to get the most out of placement and for this to be able to get Shoegaze and Dream Pop sounds too. Some pedals are meant more as a stand alone rather then a chain of 2-4 pedals for a.certain sound. I do want to get one more Reverb, an Oceans 3 (for both function and space) and put it in-between the TU3 and the Tubescreamer (it's the only Shoegaze formula that isn't covered on this yet for a Plate Reverb before Dirt sound). I'm very happy and the board is super clean with the power wires hid beneath the board and tidied up with zip ties and anchors. There is enough real estate on the board that it is convenient to turn on all pedals as they are not super crowded. Besides the size the only downsize of this board is that it weighs as much as the amp it is running into, a Roland JC 120. That said the tones are EXACTLY what I have been looking for. I have two other pedal boards (my OG Rockabilly/Psychobilly board and my budget Garage Rock board I put on a skateboard deck). For the Doomgaze Board I have at least one pedal that will go on it, a DOD Carcosa Fuzz. I want to get a Fuzzlord FET120 and probably some sort of Tubescreamer ahead of both of these. For Reverb I am thinking of a Soft Focus as well as an Afterneath pedal to put before and behind the Dirt pedals. Probably an EHX Canyon for Echo. That said it's still theoretical at this point and I am trying to avoid a repeat of my main board (even though it can Doomgaze as well). All other effects I really don't touch all that much. Again, great video.😎👍✨
Running a Hotone volume/wah, mxr poly blue octave, diy semi-parametric EQ, klon, then my main dirt pedals are either a metal zone or a rat, then either a EQD Hizumitas or a DOD carcosa. For reverb I use a walrus Slö and for delay I’m using a source audio nemesis which has a pretty good space echo setting. All of this running into my Orange thunderverb

My go to doom combo is Black Arts Pharoah into MXR Fullbore. I can build any sound I want around those two. I put a higher gain fuzz in front of the Pharoah. Usually an Abominable Demon Lung or Spaceman Sputnik. A lower gain overdrive or boost can go after the Fullbore if desired. Modulation and time based effects after. Strymon Mobius, Timeline, Empress Reverb, Neunaber Immerse. I usually stick to just the gain pedals when playing Doom or any kind of metal. Once I start adding the other stuff I end up playing ambient music.
Excellent video, clear and concise, love it! What're your thoughts on compressor pedals. Especially for adding sustain. Worth it, or use something else?
I use them in post production a lot but have never had one on my board but have a feeling they would be really helpful with fuzz and distortion. I’d probably run them before dirt since after the dirt pedals the signal is already super compressed anyway.
My pedal board is absurd, I need to streamline this, but I end up always adding instead. current board set up is a big muff tone wicker, catalinbread csidman for some crazy droney, glitchy delay stuff, the dunlop crybaby from hell wah, a behringer ultra vibrato (looking to replace w a chorus soon) and a classic HM-2. crunchy, glitchy noisy goodness all round
Tremolo is used a lot more than chorus (90+% of Stoner rock has trem and a LOT of doom too), after all other modulation but before delay and reverb works placement wise. Tremolo needs to be mentioned more, infact you can even boot a phase 90 off your boad and run a trem and a wah.
I have the life pedal V1. It's a workhorse because it sounds good on everything. That said, I get a way more aggressive tone with the fender Sheilds Blender and it's cheaper used too!
A work in progress, I'm going for a base rhythm tone like Celtic Frost and a variety of lead tones.
