John Peel was one of the first broadcasters to play psychedelic rock and progressive rock records on British radio. He is widely acknowledged for promoting artists of multiple genres, including pop, dub reggae, punk rock and post-punk, electronic music and dance music, indie rock, extreme metal and British hip hop. Fellow DJ Paul Gambaccini described Peel as "the most important man in music for about a dozen years".

The 'Dragon' at the top of the headstone is the badge of Liverpool Football club,John was a big fan,the inscription at the bottom of the headstone is from John's favourite song, Teenage Kicks by The Undertones.
It's a Bird not a dragon. 🙂 The Liver bird is the symbol of Liverpool & Liverpool FC and located on the top of the Liver buildings. The Liver Bird has been a symbol of the city for over 800 years.
RIP John.
@@pataleno thank you for putting people straight. Got a little annoyed when he said it was a dragon.
@@cemu1065 “Got a little annoyed when he said it was a dragon”! Is that all you have to say about the video?🤨 A Phoenix is a mythical bird from Greek mythology, often associated with fire hence maybe why some would think of it as a dragon.
It was a well researched video…lots of info we didn’t know…Thankyou for doing all of that….but shame on you for thinking the Liver bird was a flipping dragon! Lol ( I used to work for the Royal Liver, and still find fascination looking up at the four birds perched at each corner of the building) but you brought the tears back to my eyes…I didn’t think John had been gone so long! He was an amazing human being, kind, caring and a genuine chap. As well as a talented DJ. I hadn’t even given a thought to his breaking the mould by playing new unheard of punk etc, rather than the “comfortable “ familiar music we expected to hear, but introduced us to the Undertones ( and what an incredible gesture Flying over to Ireland to meet them at his own expense, then featuring their music! I can just imagine the shock he got and how very touched he must have felt when the band turned up at his door to present him with their personal gift and tribute. As I say, a truly genuine bloke. That choked me up again too as I mentally pictured the scene. He introduced us to Pink Floyd who I love, and doubt any other DJ at the time ( bar Pirate ships) would have had such courage…but aren’t we glad he did? He may have said he came last at school, but he was a leading light in his job. Just wish someone had put fresh flowers or a plant on his grave. You will NEVER,EVER be forgotten
John…your passing at such a young age was tragic, and my heart goes out to his family and close friends. My one selfish regret is never having got to meet him personally! But I’m a big believer in the after life…there has to be more than just three score years and ten, and John was robbed of at least ten years! So I truly believe in heaven he is back enjoying himself Dj ing, and finally getting to meet all his music heroes..Hendrix,Elvis, and so many many more as well as being back with his parents,….believe it….there is no death..just the next chapter of another big adventure, so maybe THEN I may have the pleasure of meeting this wonderful man at last. Godbless you John…bet your still watching Liverpool play from where you are! Once a Liverpool supporter ALWAYS one! Thanks Beep Beep ( don’t know your name! Sorry! ) this was a beautiful churchyard for John, and if I’m that way, I will be sure to bring you some Red flowers for a Liverpool supporter, unless they change them yet again..used to be blue! Now I read their THIRD kit ( why?) is “dark atomic teal and Rio Teal” whatever those colours are. I think you would have stepped up and said something about the revolving door of kit change..poor kids try to keep up and support, bad enough high ticket costs without pestering hard up parents having to keep buying new kit to support as well….it’s not fair John in these football loving kids, of which you were always one…so if you have any sway from where you are, please have a word…they would have listened I’m sure. Rest easy…see you in the future.
Love and light. Helen 🙋♀️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💕🦋🦋💐🥰 🎄🎅🙏🙏🙏xxx

Oh my Allan, I recall the day I heard John had died, I had watched and listened to him for so many years, I just could not take it in. Just a great loss such a huge void he left. A nice decent guy and the best D. J . till the end. May he R.I.P. 😢😢😢
So many bands owe John their success. What an amazing and forward thinking person. RIP John Peel.
Ah John Peel. My era. Found some great bands and brilliant music through listening to Johns show! You described him well Alan, diverse!!! Loved the story of the Undertones (great band). You always give us a little something new with every grave you visit Alan. Thank you❤RIP John.
Hello Thistle, that's it. I tried to find something which captures the person's hat that lived and this did. I think he will probably think it was one of his best presents ever. Great to hear from you and the comment was super. Alan
That was a great tribute to the wonderful John Peel .
Your description of how he was and his values was spot on.
A true Diamond of a man, RIP John.
Thank you for the wonderful video mate.
Hello TS, likewise my friend. It's nice to know you. Thank you for the great comment. It's really appreciated. Hope to see you in the future. Alan
So many bands owe their emergence and success to this man. No exaggeration to say he literally changed the face of british music in the late 70s. He was also a brilliant antidote to all the 'smashie & nicey' types who used to dominate radio one's output in them days
John was my absolute favourite from the age of 13 ...on wards ....loved his radio shows ...every week ...treasure his book ...its a shame many musicians dont go and visit his grave ....i still listen to his radio shows now ...he inspired me to lisren to ....Echo and the Bunny men ...and the cocteau twins ...and i had 2 mags which my dad got me every month ..record mirror ...would love to visit his grave ...thanks for this ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you Donna. I'm so pleased you enjoy this show so much! You were a super fan 👍 Greathear from you
John Peel what a lovely man, thanks for this, it's sad because he really was taken too soon, a joy to listen to and clearly loved by many. Who can ask for anything more!!!!
loved him “The Okd Grey Whistle Test” springs to mind. Another one gone way too early, so sad. I remember getting a real shock. when I heard of his death. I listened to Radio Luxemburg too and Radio Caroline. Great days. Good Bless him❤️
From John's later TV voice over work, one name sticks in my mind in John's unique voice - Mr Trebus. John voiced a series about hoarders and the story forever returned to Mr Trebus who could throw nothing away, little old guy who was Eastern European and living in London.
So many of my formative years were spent listening to John Peel on a Sunday Night and also Annie Nightingale. 1st heard most of the bands I enjoy to this day in a set they did for the show. The Ruts, Tubeway Army, Joy Division and many, many more.
I read his autobiographical book Margrave of the Marshes which was fascinating.
John was treated rather badly by Marc Bolan who John championed all the way to the top only for Bolan to turn his back on John.
Such a great man gone far too soon.
It was so wonderful that he gave so many bands a helping hand with his fame and influence. He had such a distinctive voice and it was so awful to lose him so suddenly at age 65. Thanks Alan for remembering the great man. 🙌🎶👍
Hello Sally, nice to radio lovely comments again. Look after yourself. Alan
Thank you for this one, he was just a brilliant man. The John Peel Sessions were a staple and I loved his drole sense of humour. You were right about him being unique. There has been no one like him since. A modest resting place for a modest gentleman. Rest in peace, John.♥️
I think that's totally true. Sheila, it was the perfect stone 👌
What a talented & incredibly modest man. RIP John ❤️
Nice job again!.
Without John Peel, The Great British band XTC wouldn't have been discovered!
Cheers John 👍👍👍👍 🇮🇪

Thankyou for a very sincere tribute to the late great JOHN PEEL . He was DJ at MOTHERS ROCK CLUB on friday evenings in Erdington Birmingham in the early 70's . I visited his grave in 2014 and laid flowers there . RIP JOHN PEEL
Thank you my friend. Nice to meet you and read your comment
When you loose someone you admire it make you realise how we are all mortal , and this makes each day we live valuable .@@MotorHomeBeepBeep
Man of my generation.
loved his laid back humorous approach on Top of the Pops Alan. Both he and Mark E Smith of The Fall ( one of his favourite groups,), gone now, Both great men untouched by fame.
Hi Alan I have watched all your videos over the last couple of weeks and I have really enjoyed them. I like the way you give the background of the person along with a personal touch at their place of rest. I look forward to more of your interesting videos during 2023
Hi Perditah that's very nice of you to be dedicated enough to watch them. I appreciate that. I haven't been on for a while but I will be coming back soon. I should watch out for you with your unusual name. Take care, Alan
I was lucky enough to meet John when I was 15 at a Kraftwerk concert. A true legend!
I love the quote on his gravestone
Great delivery and respect Alan, as always and thanks so much for this. RIP John 🙏🏼
Hello blazing saddles, John. Was a little bit controversial but there is no disputing the fact that he had a fantastic following and help so many groups so it was a pleasure to do it. Thank you my friend. Alan
Wonderful tribute to a great man. Agree with every word you said about this incredible broadcaster and human. One of the highlights of my teenage was being stepped over by John Peel at a party!
I would love to visit his grave. Like many people, I grew up with John Peel.
Thank you for sharing this.
Hello Edward, I'm glad it gave you some pleasure. You obviously was a fan. Thank you,
Thank you for bringing us these stories Alan. Always so interesting and informative.
Jude, They're big. Thank you too. It goes both ways. Alan
Thanks Alan, I'll always remember John Peeles late night radio 1show. He's very much appreciated and so are you.
Exactly GC is late night show was the best. Thank you Alan
The friendly voice in the background during my teenage insomnia years.
Nicely done and a fine tribute.. I had the pleasure of meeting John when working at a club in Romford. He just turned up to see a particular band he liked at the time.
No airs and graces and insisted on paying to get in, I remember having a good chat to him about his Radio1 days. He played our request and mentioned us on his next show,
Top man and taken from us way too soon...
Very much liked John peel and the music he played R I P John
Brilliant stuff Alan a legend of a man John peel .
Hi Alan John to me was such an unassuming man he was my favourite dj gone too soon rip John . Thanks Alan
All an act
Hello Sharon, ignore the comment before it wasn't an act. All the people that worked with him said what a great guy was. He just gets some people who put silly things. Thank you for the comment. Alan
@@MotorHomeBeepBeep Hi alan don't worry I will ignore it thankyou. 👍👍
A man of many. Talents who proved you didn’t need to be top of class to gain success and be happy a man with a gift for which your fans thankyou RIP Sir
John was a one off, we'll never see the likes of again
RIP John Peel
A great tribute to a unique broadcaster, thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you.
Wonderful tour to John's grave well done 👍👌
I remember him so well. Growing up and listening to music and how he talked. Like he was talking just to you. Great vid! Thank you.
Well I think we can agree on one thing for sure about this nice man 👍 He truly had a "heart of gold!" 💖
Such a lovely tribute to John , thank you
Miss his voice on the radio.....rip john
What a lovely guy , and a brilliant unique DJ . I spent many a night listening to him and his friend , " Whispering " Bob Harris. I first heard of a group via ,John called , Pere Ubu . A little different , but now have several LP's of theirs . Thanks , Alan , another great video .
I always remember hearing his show when I worked late night as a young hairdresser. he discovered so many bands who now are legendary. Love the mini bio , awsome😎
Hi Liesl yes he wasn't everybody's cup of tea but he had a nice way on the radio. I love you little drawing motif for your profile. Take care, Alan
Brilliant mate . John peel a legend to everyone in music . Thanks for taking the time to do this and share it .
Thank you Neil. Take care
Ahh yes thank you for remembering John and reminding me of him, beautiful church and grounds, his headstone does look old for the year, lovely Liver bird on top, must have been a Liverpool fan
Brilliant show again I'm hooked on this now
Great show Paul enjoyed it 👍BRIAN UPTON ROLLESTON ON DOVE
Thanks so much for this. Extremely moving. So many good memories of John. He is irreplaceable
His wifes family lived in Fanny's Ale House Saltaire years before its conversion to a pet shop then the pub. Saw him with his family the day he came to the pub, in the days when they served food upstairs, about 1998/9. When he came to pay the bill they didn't take cards so they had to dig deap to find the cash amongst them selves. He took it all in good humour.
Love your very sympathetic and respectful tribute to John Peel .he did originate from my home town the ‘dragon’ on his grave is the Liver bird,a symbol of Liverpool where he came from and Liverpool FC of which he was an avid fan.
Thank you, William
I remember back in the late seventies when I was 15 I used to stay up to listen to his radio 1 show, This guy got me into music especially the Undertones and a band called the members. Usually the next day at school the talk before assembly was always about his show the night before. In a way what I learnt from him was it don’t matter what you listen to as music is music. This guy helped me to kick start my record collection and is a personal hero of mine . The radio 1 shows literally became part of my life that extended into my social life as we used to buy the records he played then play them usually around a friends house on a Friday night.
I admired him greatly as he played so many great records and always came across like I was listening to a friend no just a DJ.
Still miss him to this day as he literally had an Impact on who I am today.
Thanks for the video.
Thanks for this RIP John Peel.
You shall never walk alone, John 🎶 ❤️
Alan may i be the first to wish you a vary merry christmas and thanks for all the hard work you have done to make the videos we all love thanks paul
Hello Paul, I've just seen this. I'm so sorry I didn't reply. Thank you ever so much and I'm hoping you're having a good new year even though it's belated. All the best, Alan
@@MotorHomeBeepBeep Thanks alan
Thanks for this one my favourite DJ of all-time the legend John peel l listened to his show as a young punk fan of the late 70's supposed to have been asleep but had a battery transistor radio under the pillow loved the vibrant new bands he had introduced to us young fans
Incidentally that dragon on the headstone is the Liverpool FC creast as JP was a massive Liverpool fan
John Peel, the man who stood up for bands, that wanted to get their views and message over to the public, even if THE ESTABLISHMENT didn't like it. A man of great integrity and passion about music, sadly missed.
I loved listening to John Peel a lovely man who loved music. R.I.P. John you were taken far to soon.God bless you 🙏🙏🙏💖💖💖🌹❤️
Nice one been there as live not far away. Lovely setting
Wow, to be honest I didn't even know he died, wondered what had happened to him, but wow, what a legend, what a life, loved his style fir playing music, a very unique chap. Thank you Alan xx
Hello Wendy, yes, I've had a few that said that when you're not a massive fan, you miss them. Sometimes they've gone and you forget startly understandable. See you soon. It's great. Take care, Alan

Superb tribute to John Peel. Youre like a walking Wikipedia!
Thanks again for an awesome video.
Amaan very sweet of you. Thank you, Alan
Thanks for this one he was one of my heroes! he was djing in my home city of Nottingham back in the 90s and I couldn't make it although my cousin went, anyway I got a phone call from my cousin that night and he said there's someone who wants to talk to you! the next voice I heard was who at first I thought was my cousin imitating John Peels voice! but as he carried on It dawned on me that it was the great man himself!!! my coisin had told him I was a big fan and passed his mobile phone to John!!! John asked me what the best record shops in Nottingham were and about music in general. What a true gentleman and sadly missed.
Enjoyed this one, Let's not forget his "leg up" for Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Thanks so much for this one Alan, JPs show was the highlight of my day and like so many I was absolutely gutted when he passed away . Was so pleased though when his young lad Tom started doing a show on 6music, I put a link to his show But I see RUclips removed it . The show is on Friday night @9pm if you want to listen, thanks again David .
Ok David thank you for telling me. I have a look for the link myself. Cheers for that. Alan
What a beautiful location too, another wonderful episode.
Hello my friend, I won't say again big thank you
He was awesome,I always loved his radio shows.xx
Great video.
RIP John.
John peel. Another nice one alan. Kay
R. I. P John from one Liverpool Fan To Another ❤️🙏 you'll never walk alone. Thanks Alan for covering his story
John was a fan of the Faces, playing their tracks and giving them exposure which helped the band immensely. Pretending to play mandolin with the Faces on TOTP which upset some cranks at the BBC which we all like to see. His radio show was pretty unique and he regularly plugged new bands however obscure, some I’m sure never heard of again, but that was Peely he didn’t care and that was one of his qualities.
Hello Tim, yeah I've seen the video where he's pretending to play the mandolin. He looked pretty embarrassed in that. I thought not a natural performer as a singer or musician. Anyway, see you soon mate. Alan
Thank you Alan for another truly heartfelt video which was very well presented
and with feeling
Thanks Again Alan, another great vid and memorial/tribute to another legend!
The big thank you to you Roger for taking the time Alan
Great man was John Peel. I remember him presenting top of the pops with Janice Long in the 1980s. They were good friends and had a great working relationship with one as witty as the other. The Undertones come from my part of the world and are still performing to this very day, minus Fergal Sharkey. John Peel gave them their big break and like you said on the video the band never forgot John for it. He was a gentleman and he knew his music. He is still sadly missed and will long be remembered. Thanks for sharing another good video story of a true great.
I remember listening to his Programne when i was on Duty in NI i had pocket radio and one prgogramme at 22.00, (10.00) he played Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll, Ian Drury and the Blockheads. I always think of this when thinking of John Peel. RiP John.
I love theses vlogs Alan, thanks so much. Very interesting about John Peel, great DJ xx
Nice to meet you Megan 😀 Alan
I so remember John Peel such a genuine down to earth real person RIP❤️ lovely man
RIP John, I fully agree with his approach to new music, a breath of fresh air! All, I mean all the DJ's today are crap compared to John, I remember listening to I'm in love with a German filmstar by other passions, amazing.....
As a young punk rocker back in the 70's (i still am as an old man) i wouldn't miss John's show at 10 every night, living up north it was how we got to hear about all the new bands. When i play teenage kicks it brings back memories of hearing it on his show, and with it being played at his funeral they will always be linked together.
He had a great voice and it brings back great memories to this old punk. Wonderful video a tribute, thank you for making it.
Thanks Alan for taking the time to travel all round to do these videos. Really interesting & informative as always ❤
Hello Charmaine, that's extremely kind of you to think about that aspect. They do take quite a bit of travel and organisation but I enjoy it so they always say it's not chore if it's your hobby. All the best Alan
Really interesting again. Loved the Undertones anecdote. Thanks for uploading :)
😎I didn't always like what he played but that is what made him interesting. He had a massively engaging style and you never knew what he was going to play. RIP John. 😎
Great tribute. And spot on. He was somebody to listen to all the time, but especially if you were a bit down and depressed. John would lift you. RIP Mr Ravenscroft..
He always bothered to reply to fan letters and even a condolence letter when his wife Sheila was very unwell. Very kind in person when I offered him an old 78 rpm disc he had said he was looking for. A truly great human being, as well as fine broadcaster. And he often supported poor young bands financially on the quiet, which is often overlooked.
Always played a bit of Quo did John.😀❤️👍
My memory of him was reading out the football results on stage at the Buxton Festival in 1972. Delightful man who introduced me to some wonderful music. RIP John.
Amazing video amazing place bravo Alan
He gave all sorts of other music air play, and not the usual Radio 1 chart songs. He was a breath of fresh air. Greatly missed. R.I.P. John
Another lovely video Alan. Such an nice man who promoted one of our greatest pleasures in life….music. The headstone at his borderless grave is, like the man, unassuming. As with many other DJ’s from the 60’s & 70’s, they were part of our childhood (and beyond). How dull life would be without music! RIP John.
Perfect comment Paul, you're always so precised and on the with you observations. See you again sooner up. Alan
What a lovely Guy he was .... He was born not far from me in Heswall Wirral ... 10:09 The crest at he top is a Liver Bird its from Liverpool & is on The Liverpool FC tops ....Great tribute to him Alan 💙
I never knew much about John Peel, but I can hear his voice in my head right now. Great tribute.
stood behind John Peel on the escalator in Virgin records in Oxford Street, London sometime in the early 90s. I was so star struck i followed him around the store for a bit but too nervous to say anything
Greetings from Dallas, Alan. Another great memory. John was here in Dallas in the early 60s and was staying not too far from my house. In 1961, he spoke to JFK on a visit to Dallas and there are a couple of John's close-up pictures of JFK in his autobiography "Margrave of the Marshes". I have to admit, although not my kind of music, John was a talented and revered broadcaster and up until his passing, had out-survived all the other DJs on Radio One. RIP
Hello Paul, interesting comment. I didn't know that about the photos of JFK it was a tough time. All the best, Alan
@@MotorHomeBeepBeep The 1961 Dallas visit was obviously 2 years before JFK was assassinated in November 1963.
@@paulm.7422 He was in Dallas when Oswald himself was murdered .
@@spanishpeaches2930 He was, but not when he actually spoke with JFK. Peel was able to attend one of the police briefings, claiming to represent the "Liverpool Echo" newspaper. There is a picture somewhere online.
I just checked Wikipedia, and it says the bird on his gravestone is the Liver Bird from his favourite football team, Liverpool FC.
I do believe that john peel was a press witness to the shooting of john Harvey Oswald. A new sub x
Hello mortuary artist, sorry I didn't reply earlier. I miss this one. You are correct with that 100% and thank you for subscribing. Alan
The peel sessions 💕
Any one of my age who loved music will always be grateful to John Peel. Rest easy
I’m sure most of us saw him DJing at a polytechnic or university somewhere in the isles. I loved listening to him,as a young boy ,late at night in me bed
I remember coming down in the morning and the radio was on and there was a guy , another radio guy, talking about JP. I didn't connect the dots for a minute. Then i realised the conversation was in the past tense...hit me really hard that one. Took me weeks to accept he'd died.
I remember him well - my era
He was a real DJ, played a mixed bag of tunes from all genes of music.
Great to see he is not forgotten, great video....RIP, Rocking in Paradise, John :)
Thanks Alan ; Great tribute mate . Cheers
Thank you, Craig
