  • @sleepwalker31
    @sleepwalker31 Год назад +3

    Personally, I think its spartan nature weighed up against its performance especially when you throw the R into the mix doesn't make it the most desirable mk7 performance golf.
    The R offers everything it doesn't and is still a blast around the roads you've mentioned.
    Good video as always and glad you're back with content 👍🏾😎

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Год назад +5

      Thanks! Don't listen to me, the press hold the Clubsport S in much higher esteem than any R. Yes it makes sacrifices but if you want the ultimate hot hatch high it's worth it. I've made a few videos why R isn't as much fun to drive as a GTI, whether it be Mk7 R vs TCR or Mk8 Clubsport vs Mk8 R, and Clubsport S takes this even further. The R has lots of postive qualities but ultimate fun isn't high on its priorities even though it's breadth of ability is far broader.

    • @sleepwalker31
      @sleepwalker31 Год назад +1

      @@volkswizard oh I have no doubt that the press do and the R does appeal to the broader market.
      Apart from on a track or some B roads, I can't see where the clubsport S becomes worthwhile as an everyday performance hatch but all depends on what one wants.
      Keep up the videos, they are very informative for an everyday buyer. 👍🏾

    • @andrewmcivor42
      @andrewmcivor42 Год назад +2

      To be honest, I see the R as more of a "GT" type car - it's brilliant as a fast, powerful & surprisingly comfortable (with DCC anyway) long distance cruiser. The Clubsport S (& to a lesser degree, the "lesser" GTi models) are for a slightly different market - I'd say they WERE, arguably, more fun than an R. I say that as an R owner (the estate) myself.

    • @sleepwalker31
      @sleepwalker31 Год назад +1

      @@andrewmcivor42 I see where you're coming from. I own a mk7 R hatchback and having previously had a mk2 focus Rs which compares to the gti CS in some ways, I feel 4wd offers a different kind of fun. That's not to say the gti doesn't but I just don't feel it's more fun than the R.
      Their limited production run does make them more valuable though

    • @andrewmcivor42
      @andrewmcivor42 Год назад +1

      @@sleepwalker31 I suppose it's about what you want from a car - I went for the R, purely as I wanted an estate. I'd probably have bought a GTi PP otherwise (having had a Mk7 GTD before, I wouldn't have had issue with the lack of awd - it was a great car).
      I only have 1 car, so I needed something that could do "everything" (including load lugging) - living in the North of Scotland, the R estate is the perfect car for me. It's fun, can take lots of luggage (including my large dog🤣) & won't leave me stuck when I'm going to work at 0400 on a frosty January morning, when it's sure footed, particularly on winter wheels/tyres.
      The GTi Clubsport S is definitely NOT a car that can do everything (& certainly isn't for me) - but what it does do, it does fantastically well. The best "weekend/track day" Golf GTi & historically significant too.
      I believe the point Andrew has made before is that the R is so grippy & sure footed, it's not particularly "on the limit" until you got highly illegal levels of driving! The GTi is less so, given it's putting all that power through the front wheels only, therefore it's arguably more fun at reasonably sensible speeds. The same could be said for the Up! GTi too, a car I absolutely love.

    Are mk7's going up value across the board?
    My VW dealer who I got my 7 R from in December 2021 is offering to by my car off me for more or less what I paid for it, nearly £20k. Is manual as well with 53k on it now.
    When I went to have a chat with them, I said the only car I would change it for is a 7.5 R with DSG, but they have absolutely 0 in stock, which I found unbelievable. Only car in the spec I would want is over 200 miles away and apparently has people fighting over it. They told me stock R's are like goldust now.
    If I had spent over a decade in high powered fwd hatches, I would go for a gti, but getting used to 4wd I can't go back.

      I was waiting for someone to point that out - I meant the previous gen car but couldn't find a photo, that one is a lot stiffer. With regards to the model in the pic, evo mag had a long termer and managed to blow both tyres on one side of the car due to a minor carriageway imperfection and the 30 section tyres on 20" wheels so I'd say it's uncompromising but not necessarily with regards to ride quality or noise.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Год назад

      Thanks! Apart from being lighter which helps everything, the steering is the key difference between other Mk7 and 7.5 inc TCR. I'd say Mk8 Clubsport feels similar so what they learned with CSS was too late for 7.5 which came out a few months later. Steering feel is a key attribute so it's more important than it might seem and it's why I found the Mk8 so much better to drive than the older cars (exc. CSS).

    Was thinking about installing the racing line strut brace but I don't have enough content to see what difference it actually makes.
    This is also a bit random but as you are the wizard, have you had any weird vibration in the car. I have some rattling on the left side but I suspect it's just some plastic rattle on trim.
    Thought i'd ask incase it's some weird known golf thing if there is something on the left side of the car that causes it.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Год назад

      I am not sure the rear brace does much apart from looking good. It might do something but the shell is super stiff anyway so not sure it's worth the inconvenience if you fold the seats down.
      No rattles from when I had it apart from suspension related. I hate rattles. Best advice is to get a passenger to help pinpoint it as they can be tricky to find especially when driving.

      I used HiQ in Stratford Upon Avon as local but still use the excellent Ben and aptly named Jack at Selly Oak Tyres Stirchley in Birmingham when I am in the area. They appeared in an early Cupra 280 video in May last year. Good guys. www.stirchleytyres.co.uk/

      Mega mount, dead cheap and pretty good. They don't like Mk2 Golfs or Mk3 TT but they work on most others inc Mk7
