  • Hello plant friends and hoya heads! Welcome to the second day of our #30DaysofHoya. Now, I know the first one was a bit of a snooze since Hoya carnosa is super common, but today we have something more special. This is Hoya caudata in all its glory. It’s probably one of my favorite Hoyas, just because of those leaves. I have two caudatas - one with silver leaf and one with a big green leaf. Now, mind you, the silver one is not so much silver, but more red. Very bright light will do this to the leaves of some hoyas. Nevertheless, I think it’s still a beautiful plant. You will hear some basic information in the video and some guidelines. As always, a separate file/ sheet will be available for you to download in the video description on RUclips (my channel is Basie Plants) or you can simply take a screenshot of my stories - you have separate Highlight on my Instagram (@basie.plants) that is also named ’30 Days of Hoya’. Thank you for watching and see you in the next one!

    I don’t have a ton of hoyas…yet. But so far, my caudata Sumatra is probably the fastest growing. I was very surprised. In about 2 months it has spiraled 4 vines about 2ft up the shelf legs & put on about 10 new leaves. Shockingly, I found it at a local nursery & it isn’t even in an ideal potting mix, too much peat. I put the success all up to the Marshydro grow tent. I have no special abilities. It’s been a very rewarding plant to grow

      Yes, it seems to be a very thirsty hoya. My humidity is a bit on the higher side and I keep mine in a plastic pot so I don't have to water as often. I have some coco peat in the mix so that helps as well. But I know some people water their hoyas only once every 2-3 weeks and I would definitely not recommended that :D I am happy to hear your caudata is growing so well :)

      I am sorry to hear that! They sometimes need a bit more time to recover. I would try using some stimulator in forms of amino acids to give it a kick-start. Or, for me, algamic by Biobiozz has worked wonders. It literally saved the impossible! I hope it helps :) Thank you for watching 💚

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  4 года назад +2

      Thank you! I am glad to hear that. I have a separate mic, but it's not made for these types of videos - more for studio recordings, so a deaf room is needed for a better audio. I will, of course, invest in a separate mic and a better camera, but it's not possible at this moment. Working on it though! 😊 I hope you can still enjoy the videos nevertheless. 💚

    How do you fertilize the one in hydro?

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  4 года назад +2

      That is still a challenge for me honestly. Currently, I dilute the recommended orchid fertilizer in rainwater. I use around 1/10th of the recommened dosage. And I will use that to water (it will also remain in the reservoir). Then next time I water, I will use just plain rainwater, but cover the holes, fill it all the way to the top, leave it for 15 minutes or so, and then flush it out (plain rain water will remain in the reservoir). Then, from time to time, I fill add liquid oxygen too. But I am still learning about semi hydro. I will make a more informed video at one point, when I feel I figured it all out 😅

      I do! And it did! I had to cut it in 5-6 cuttings because I was rerooting it again due to mealybugs. Didn't flower yet.

    Tip for thumbnail, call the days, so this is 30days of Hoya day 2. Then people who step in later can follow the whole 30days and know the ‘upload order’
    Love this idea❤️ start following you because of the 30days!

  • @FWild-eb1rd
    @FWild-eb1rd Год назад

    Are there different types of caudata? Normal Form and Sumatra? 🤔Thanks

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  Год назад

      There are different clones of Hoya caudata. With bigger leaves, more splashy leaves, differences in flower color. The plant that people call caudata (Sumatra) is a plant collected in Sumatra, and it is most likely sp.aff.caudata :)

    My Caudata arrived in the mail with wrinkly, paper thin leaves. The soil was dry, but I’m afraid it will be a loss. Is there a way to recover this plant once its leaves are wrinkled and paper thin?

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  3 года назад +4

      Hi! It depends. How are the roots? Are they dead or alive? What is the mix? There are several things you can do depending what is the state of the plant. First, check the roots. If some are dead, remove them. You can then place the plant in a mix that you can keep evenly moist but not too wet. Something that is light and airy. You can mist them every day with some water that has some stimulator in it - I use either algamic, amino acids or super drive (similar to super thrive). My caudata has the misfortune of getting too dry just recently and the roots were damaged, but not completely dead. It is in a net pot ina mix of bark and moss (very little moss). I removed the cover pot, I would mist it daily, and I would give it little water every other day. Because the mix is so airy, and the net pot doesn't hold any water, this would make the bark just slighly moist and it would dry out fast. Now of course, you might be in a different situation. If the roots are dead, you can root it again. In any case, take it slowly. Give it less water more frequently, don't saturate it with water all out of a sudden (unless the roots are completely dead, then you can just root it, I rotted my caudata in distilled water, it's a bit slow but ti does root!) I was even able to save caudata (big green leaves) that I rotted, and several weeks after potting it, it lost all the leaves. I was left with a stick and no roots, so I placed it back in water and sure, it took 2 months to grow new vine but it is alive now. So don't give up :) Let me know how it goes and I hope this was useful. Sorry for the long response. ❤️

    I just got a huge caudata Sumatra in the mail and the vines are long and wraps around the trellis that came with it. The vines seem brittle, but it doesn’t seem to bother the leaves on it. Do I keep the vines that’s crunchy or not?

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  4 года назад

      That's lovely to hear! If the vines are fine and not dry, I would not cut them. If they are dry, and if you're bothered by them you can cut them. If they are just good vines with no leaves on them (but the vine is still alive), keep them for a while, they may start growing new vines from the nodes :) I hope that helps. :) Good luck with your new hoya!
