- The latest Pokémon GO Gym and Raid update is overall a positive change for the game, but it has a few shortcomings that Niantic could easily fix. After yesterday's video on best Gym defenders in Pokémon GO, a lot of players expressed concern with the way coins are collected from gyms in Pokémon GO - you don't actually want your Pokémon to stay in gyms that long... Plus raids can be very unfair for rural players and unforgiving if you don't have a group together before starting.

When there's a lvl 4 raid in your rural area but only 3 people trying to defeat the raid boss... sucks man

even worse is knowing it's a tyranitar but you cant start the raid cause you know you won't have a chance... :(

Happened to me today. It was a Tyranitar. Luckily we managed to beat it with 5 people.
If you fail a raid the first time, you don't have to you another pass to battle again. Cause I had one raid pass and battled the same raid 3 times while only using one pass. Like in hopes of Nick seeing this.
this is correct. if you fail to beat the raud you can try again and again until the raid timer is over. you can tell this because the Battle button will have a green checkmark showing that you are flagged as using a pass. same thing happens if you join a raid and the game freezes or you GPS lag out of range.

I see a lot of people supporting the new gym system still, but the biggest issue I have with it is the unpredictability combined with the 50 coin per day limit. This led to a situation where I had a Pokémon in a gym for four days return, a Pokémon in a gym for two days return, and a Pokémon at a gym for nine hours return, and if they had all come on different days, I could have gotten 150 coins, but instead thanks to the limit and inability to control when my Pokémon get kicked out, they all came back on the same day and I only got 50 Pokécoins, meaning the resources and time that I put into taking control of the other two gyms went to complete waste.
It´s a shit system, it discourages, gym conquering.
Not exactly it just encourages you to hold one gym at a time. Kinda boring though , just bust one gym and put a stack of blisseys.
Warren- Holding one gym at a time is even worse if your goal is to get the daily 50 coins. You CAN'T stack Blisseys anymore, and if your goal is to get the max daily coins you wouldn't want to (since you only get coins when your pokemon is knocked out and returns).
Gyms are way different than they were, and coin income from them is less than half of what it was, at best (and like you said Epicdude, unpredictable). Even so, I've been able to hit my 50 coin limit pretty reliably, and I think it's taken less work than it did to maintain max collect like I was before. I love that the new system encourages a lot more people to interact with gyms, even if just to spin it for items (and maybe feed some berries). The gym badge system is kinda nice, and combined with the bonuses for your team holding a gym gives a little bit of extra incentive to interact. I've resigned to just having a much lower coin income, but with raid passes I think it ends up being slightly better for me overall, or at worst a wash. I can pick what raid I want to go for (to a degree) and do 1-2 free raids in a day (using yesterday's pass then today's). Fighting a gym, placing pokemon, feeding berries all boost your gym badge and even if the gym doesn't stay yours long you're permanently increasing how many items you get from that gym-stop. Gyms sitting all over as 10 stacks that no one touched really didn't seem in the spirit of what a "gym" was supposed to be. The new gyms seem to come much closer to that goal.
I also disagree with Sebas- the new system encourages gym conquering, it just doesn't incentivize it as much with coins, and the benefit of HOLDING a gym is mostly smaller (though some would call getting a couple more premiere balls in raid a good incentive, along with the increase in items from spinning the disc). I miss being able to collect 100 coins a day along with a nice chunk of stardust, but I think I like having the new features more. I tore down plenty of level 10 gyms and I appreciate only needing to fight through all the gym defenders 3-4 times to beat the gym, compared to how long it used to take.
Now, if only they would/could fix all the network errors and maybe find ways to make the game less resource intensive...

you can actually fight as many times as you want in that raid with that rate pass you participated in. I battled a Snorlax with one pass.3 times

If you use a pass on a raid and don't succeed, you can keep battling the boss without having to use another raid pass until you win, or time runs out. You can even leave and come back.

Exactly! It feels so conflicting. A couple hours ago I saw a Tyranatar Raid Boss, busted it to get there with 40 minutes left, wasted a pass, then realized I was the only one there...spent the next 40 minutes, hopping in and out of the lobby hoping a spoofer would pop-up to help...

I think you should also be able to see raids on the nearby list even if you aren't in range to see them in the game. That way more people are aware of what raids are going on without having to be directly in the area or be a part of some kind of group chat.
David Daniels I agree. When I was in New Jersey and in New York last week there were gyms everywhere havin(g like 8/9 )raids at the same time . But I am back in Florida. And the gyms aren't all in the same area in every part so I haven't seen a raid since coming back.

the problem isnt reciving coins when your pokes are kicked of the gyms, the problem is the coin per day max, even if you keep your pokes in a gym for one year you only recive 50 coins at max, and if your pokes get kicked out of the gym in the same day and they have been there for an year you still only recive 50 coins
So if you got rewarded daily as he suggests, you would get more than just 50 coins for a mon staying for "one year". However have 1 mon in a gym would be just as effective as 20.
Assuming you haven't reached your coin limit for the day already. I had a Blissey in a gym for four days and I got zero coins. That blows.
Yeah that's kind of demotivates right? Even if the coins aren't the end goal. Maybe once coin limit has been met for the day, we should receive 100 stardust every 10 minutes??? Then we feel some reward after our coin limits met, and there's more motivation to take more than one gym.
exactly, i have had a pokemon in a gym for 7 days straight now since the first day of the release... and its not gonna matter at all and will probably not evem get 50 coins from it because i will have already claimed 50 coins from a different pokemon returning.
Now it's just about trying to figure out which defenders will last only for 8 hours... stupid.
I'm very frustrated with this update. I don't see the point of taking down gyms. Once I have one pokemon in a gym that's all I need. Collect my 50coins for the day and its over. If I stay in a gym for a week I get no more reward than if I was there a day. Its very demoralizing
cowscrazy it's beyond retArded. The gym rework killed the need to be high level(lvl 10 players are taking up limited gym space). Kill the need to earn your Pokémon gym placement. Kills any incentive to attack enemy gyms and randomize your coins so your more likely to just buy in shop. Fuck Niantic

Niantic should also update the raid system. There have been numerous times I have gotten into raid lobbies and realized I was the only one. There should be a grace period where a player can enter the lobby, see if anyone joins, and can leave the lobby if they realize no one else is participating. I often waste free raid passes by just joining a lobby and realizing I cannot possibly take on a level 4 raid solo. In response to 7:11.
I only raid level 1 & 2 bosses. No one around me really plays anymore so it kinda sucks having to walk away from a Tyrannitar or other cool Pokemon I don't have yet.

There should be a way to send a message to nearby players that you want to battle a raid. It's useless to try to battle by yourself
Preston Yealy I was thinking this while waiting for a simple gengar, that it should alert, when a player is near a raid boss to encourage people to go to the raid battle instead of having people waiting in the cold for a slight hope of someone showing up without no guarantee.

Willis Swegle. They can format the chat make it so your unable to send bad words. Or even make it so its template chat program response and replys
They need to add a friend request function. Make it so you can send friend requests to nearby players and if they accept allow you to communicate with them. As a solo player this would help me find people to raid with tremendously.

I called them What's Wrong Wednesdays.. anyways, I'm happy you made one about the new updates.. I feel that people at Niantic watch your videos and implement your ideas.. keep up the good work!
The raid pass should just unlock the rare rewards if you choose to consume it. Raids should be free to enter and only give xp or something small if you don't use a raid pass. That way raids will be more populated in low player-count areas and you can help out low-level friends in raids without wasting your pass on a magikarp or something you don't want. It would also solve the blind entry to the lobby problem. Seriously niantic, MMOs figured this out a decade ago. For all your talk of wanting people to play together, you sure put in a bunch of pointless gateways to keep us apart.

Since often times, the main problem with raids isn't that people aren't around to see there's one starting, but that they can't or don't wanna participate cause they only get one pass a day. Battles should be unlimited. The pass should just give the items and the chance to catch the Pokémon like you said. Somebody hire this man 😂
Nick, you can do a raid boss you spend your pass to as many times as you want until either you win or one hour spawn time passes. And if you are not in the team of "three bulbasaurs" then some people already battling the raid, so you really want to press quit and join again in several minutes, then there will be a chance that you join "3 bulba" team which essentially the most populated team

The raid pass is good for the ENTIRE raid. If you lose the battle, you can enter again on the same pass. So if you arrive right when the raid egg hatches, your raid pass is good for the entire hour (or until you win). I have done this multiple times to "scout" the move set of a boss, like Rhydon, to see if I'm facing Stone Edge or Earthquake and then adjust my team accordingly.
Also, if all 6 of your Pokémon faint before time runs out, you can heal them (or just grab 6 healthy ones to save time) and re-enter the SAME battle to help the rest of your party bring down the boss. This was a great help which allowed 4 of us to the down that Rhydon.

Never happened to me, put a post on facebook on your respective pokemon go country´s page, someone will help you out.
You only get coins when one of your pokemon in gyms gets defeated. So you can be in gyms for weeks, if nobody defeats your pokemon, you're not getting anything.
that's my issue too. i had 4 Pokemon in 4 different gyms for 3 days. i thought it was a max of 50 coins a day so I was expecting 150 coins but all I got was 50. and then another Pokemon got kicked I got nothing because my 50 coins for that day was already met. it should be 50 coins a day per Pokemon so if each of your Pokemon is in a gym for 3 days when it returns you should get 150 coins per Pokemon. i still have 2 Pokemon out that I'm pretty sure I'll never see again now and I'm not even getting anything from it because people keep healing him

Nick, the other easy solution would be to implement a recall button, to where we can decide when we want our Pokémon to leave a gym, we should be able to push a button and have that Pokémon come back to us so we can get the coins when we want to.
This, exactly this. Unfortunately Niantic wont do it because they dont want to give the coins out and any pokemon trapped for over 24hrs in a gym is good for them because its less coins they give out.

Yup. Niantic wouldn't decrease profit by letting players get the pokemon back with coins when players want. They're forcing playes who want more passes to spend money.
Thaddeus Kelly IV great idea... I take about 10 gyms a day... so a recall button would be handy if you get to raids and figure out the best Pokémon you need for the fight is in a gym.
Then players will also have a chance to sneak into you're gym while you're gone, but on the flipside... you can always come back and kick them out again ;)
Seems like a good but on the other hand that might make the gyms empty at the end of the day and no one would have to battle anymore. That's like the opposite of what Niantic is trying to implement.

Amen to your criticism about the gym team conflicts! I have been in a couple gyms now for about a week and stopped feeding them after two days because collecting the coins is more important to me. I also am using low level Pokémon so that my pokes don't stay so long.

Where did trading, 1v1 battling and legendaries go? I thought that was like half of what the trailer was about in September, 2015....
GalaxyRaven the update was a bust bcs it doesn't have pvp. It would add something to the game if you can actually defend a gym by pvp. Now the game promotes cherry picking as motivating and celebrates a Pokémon fainting as a reward. I don't persuade anyone to play a game where you're farming animals for candy and creating a false idea that you get money for losing. Pvp might add something but it won't fix the participation trophy you get after a Pokémon gets kicked out of a gym.
Probably coming soon. With everything you can do at gyms now, they'll likely use them for interacting with other players for PvP and trading. They already confirmed that legendaries will be raid bosses.

I work late. Finish at 11pm. I put 3 or 4 pokemon in gyms that turn over quickly during the daytime on the way home and when I wake up at 9am I'll have 50 coins ready for me. No challenge to it. Its frustratingly easy
After reading the data mine for raids before the update was released I assumed this lack of communication would be the problem. I preemptively made a Facebook group for my local city to organize Level 4 raids for all players. We are over 100 players now and growing everyday. Just yesterday we had 30 people going around the city on a raid schedule we made for 4 hours and clearing every one I groups of 10-15 people each time. It was awesome. I love the community effort in my city and I am extremely happy I set this up because otherwise it would be problematic just like you and many others are experiencing. if u use your raid pass and lost, u still can redo the batter as long as the raid boss time still not over
The trainers in my town made a Facebook page so that we could all scout around the city and alert each other when a good raid is found(some people use a website to find them but it's not always accurate). When one is found we gather and raid. Works pretty well.
Yep, in my town we mostly use a few different FB chats to report what raids are spotted where and see who else is coming to the one(s) we want to do.
Awesome idea for the coin reward system! That would be so much better! Hope niantic sees this video! It's also a frustrating system because if all your Pokémon that have been in gyms for a while get kicked out at the same time, you're limited to the 50 coins.. the daily reward idea would fix both.. also love the idea of being able to see how many people are ready to play in a raid before using your raid pads! Battled a tyranitar raid the other day with 3 people.. very frustrating.. had I known I would have saved it for the level 3 down the street.. keep the good ideas coming Ttips-
Paying the raid pass BEFORE knowing who's in the raid is horrible. Higher level raids are suicide in some lesser populated areas.

There is no mention of the fact that quitting would give back the pass anywhere. They could make it more obvious. But yeah, like zafrier said : raid pokemons' cp should be proportional to the usual raid activity in the area, because otherwise lesser populated regions will always be locked out of that entire feature. I have never done a raid with more than 3 people in it. It's horrible.

My area is covered in Mystic and all the gyms are completely filled, and no one tries to take them down. I can never get any coins at all

It sucks for us Mystic players too. Since the group is dominant, high leveled Mystic players with lot of free time or spoofers fully control the area. I can't even get into a gym since everything has stagnated again just with no chance to get into a gym anymore.

so i still can't join a raid. my wait time is 400+ seconds and when the seconds r over, I get an error when the raid battle begins... have u heard of this issue? and do u kno when they r gonna fix it?

That is true, but you have to use your free raid pass on the 3 or 4 star raids raids before you know if people are even around to help. So if you sit there the whole hour and nobody shows up it was a wasted pass. I think that is what he is talking about.
yeah.. I get that and admit it is really disappointing when not enough people show up, I actually missed out on my first tyranitar that way. The only reason I left this comment was because I don't recall nick ever mentioning that you can use the raid pass for the full hour. Plus he walked away after one attempt, saying the raid pass was wasted, leaving me a little confused as to whether or not he knew.
Ah, gotcha. Yeah, I do not recall him ever mentioning that either. I actually found that out as well the other day when I missed out on a Tyranitar. Tried it multiple times, but nobody ever showed up to help out.
Simple solution Nick, and one that most of us I bet have been using... Discord/Facebook Pokemon Go Groups. I'm in a Discord group that is mostly for raids in my city. If there is a Level 4 raid in the area, for example, then I check if people are coming to that raid, and I head over. I can also take screenshots of a raid and its level, as well as how long it's going to be until the egg hatches, then send it to the group, telling people where it is. Another solution is to simply *look around you*. DON'T rely on spoofers being in on the raid, it's NOT WORTH IT. If a raid is going on like the Blastoise you saw, and nobody around you is clearly playing Pokemon Go, then don't join it. If you're the type of person that likes to be in a community for Pokemon Go in your area, then check for Pokemon Go facebook groups in your area, and you might just find a Discord Group as well. If not, start your own! You never know who might join and who you might meet!

omg I feel the same way about the raid pass. It sucks to find that you are battling on your own and to lose the raid pass. So glad that you addressed this.
I think that the goal for Niantic is gym turnover. for areas like Santa Monica that's no big deal, it urns over fast. in my area, gym turnover is faster now after the update.
I hate how the new update discourages using good defenders... There's no incentive to defend a gym for more than 8 hours

You can keep battling the raid pokemon til it's gone no matter how many times you fail. Also if you see there's no one else in your raid or simply not enough people, you can run from the raid and start a new lobby, it won't use your raid pass.

Hey Nick! With the raid passes you can battle the raid pokemon over and over again in the same raid until you beat it. You don't only have one shot per day but instead one free RAID BOSS per day. At least that has happened to me multiple times. I hope that made sense. Congrats on the continued great content (:

Levelling up badges is pretty big. I have a silver badge at the local gym near my house and I get 6-8 items (usually lots of berries) every time I spin it when my team is in control. Curious what kind of rewards you get for gold badges.

o and the main thing I hate is even in my small town with now 9gyms walking distance I still can't find players to battle the bosses. no one is out unless it's a Tyranitar and even then they're probably hiding in a car.

What is your thought on tickets for Pokemon Go Fest that got bought by ticket scalpers and are now reselling them at some pretty insane prices?
At the moment the way we organise raids is our small port town has made a Pokémon go Felixstowe group, and any raids some one goes to gets posted. Then any people who play it can respond if they can get there or not if you know the people or not but an in game version for team members an global in general members implemented would be fantastic.
my buddy at work has been in a pokemon go Facebook group, he kept inviting me to join and I kept saying ya whatever, then at work we have a gym behind us and a 4 star raid was going to start in an hour he posted that to the group on Facebook and we both took breaks at same time and sure enough, around 15 people were there, took down snorlax no problem, so I've joined the great now seeing as how beneficial that was to organizing a raid
also a cool way to actually meet people I've seen in gyms the last year, I was like oh you're the fatherofdragons which I always thought was a cool name being a game of thrones fan, so I let him know
If they give out coins every day, we are back to the old system and spoofers are heavily incentivised to hold gyms forever, and they will, they have proven the will if there is a reason to. The fact that you have conflicting results is not a flaw, it means you have to make a choice, you can't have both things. Why are people assuming they can have everything? There is clearly a choice here. Hold gym for a long time for the long term bonuses, or hold it a short time for the coins, not both though. This is probably by design, and is fine by me.

Besides the not knowing who is in the raid party before I use my raid pass, I love this new update. I actually earn more coins now per day than I ever could under the old system as the gyms around me would stay the same for weeks on end.
Me too, I get 30-40 per day with just some effort, not really worth going for 50 in my area, i am fine with the effort for the 30-40. Before, I got a total of 60 ever. I am already triple my life total for not much effort, waaaaay better now.
it hurts not only spoofers, but also high level regulars. Before update I mostly controlled all my towns gyms, spending 1hr every day to reclaim lost ones, earning around 80 - 90 coins daily. now it's 50 if I'm lucky. why should high level not spoofers like me suffer so weaker players can get easy coins?
It wasn't all spoofers. I was part of an Instinct group that left really strong pokemon in gyms in our county and the one south of it. We built level 10 gyms that weren't touched by valor or mystic but now that's not possible since you have to stop by and feed the Pokémon. It's good that other players now have a chance at previously conquered gyms, but the old system actually had a sense of teamwork.
You just answered your own question, so weaker players can get some coins too. Niantic doesn't want a small number of people steamrolling everyone else, spoofer or otherwise. That is the EXACT reason they did it, so complaining that what they did is working as intended won't make anything change.

I've found that using the raid pass on a specific pokemon let's you into that raid until you can beat it, meaning that if you lose the first or second time you can still try again, though if you're on a time crunch or can't get a good enough squad in there your still out a pass.
You can fight again of u lose the raid in first place....

do the halos around stops refresh at any point?? I saw some stops that I had defo spun since the update that had halos around them again (it may have been just a glitch in the first few days after the update but idk) Also, I have the same sunglasses!

That is true, but if nobody shows during that whole hour there is no way to defeat the 3 star and up raids.

I've been preaching the same recommendations for the gyms regarding pokecoins as well as a preview of local players on gyms.
You can join the raid and if there is not enough people, you can quit the raid before it starts. This will not use your raid pass.

Next Gym update needs to change the battling system..swiping and tapping is not engaging enough..they need to change it to a system that involves skill and strategy...

is there a set number of premier balls for each raid capture, or is there a way to increase the number?
The total number of premier balls awarded are based on damage contribution, gym control and same team representative. Defeating the boss automatically awards 5, so that's the minimum you'll get.
Nick, could you explain the difference between time defended and time defending and which one the awarding of coins is based on?
I live in Amsterdam and there are like 5 group chats to report good raids. and at every tyranitar raid, almost always 10 plus people show up.
P.S. Nick if you use your raid pass to enter the lobby, and you dont actually battle and leave, you get your raidpass back (:

Personally I believe that pokecoins shouldn't be capped under 300 otherwise having more then one gym is pretty pointless. It ruins the whole point of taking gyms. They also need to do something about raid rarity. I am a rural with nothing for 3 miles not even a pidgey and it is annoying but when I do go out there sometimes 5-10 going on. Also they need to make raidpasses more accessible. Getting 1 raid pass and that's it until you use it discourages players to going out and battle raids together with friends. I really think this update was very disappointing. What about status moves like Swords Dance or Stealth Rocks or status effects like poison, confusion, and burn? CP is still here and Pokemon like Poliwrath, Politoed, Gengar, Aeradactyl, Pidgeot, Starmie, and Dugrtio are all really amazing in main series games but complete trash in pokemon go and Pokemon like Vaporeon, Flareon, Jolteon, Pilowswine (Mamoswine is really strong but pilowswine isn't), Exegutor, and Rhydon (Also rhyperior is strong but rhydon isn't all that great). We need abilities because even though a Pokemon may have good stats like Regigigas or Slaking those Pokemon also have horrible abilities. Pokemon like Greninja and Shedninja will be trash because they won't have their abilities and Greninja will be sitting with poliwrath and ludicolo as a bubble hydro pump while Vaporeon which isn't very great in the main games will be up above them. I like the rework better then the old system but compared to adding status moves and abilities and even getting rid of cp itself it is a disappointment.

Thank you Nick for understanding our issues in not so busy areas. Yesterday I questioned the problem with getting coins when pokemon get kicked out and today you spoken about my second issue with raids. Not many people feel its worth it for 100 coins to participate in a raid and nobody is in there.
Another thing about the raids is that when you join, the timer should reset or increase, because there were several times when i joined and i didnt even have time to choose my pokemon since the timer only had 5 seconds left
Niantic should had put in Gym leaders (such as Brock (Rock Type), Misty ( Water type), etc) & the elite 4 in gyms instead of raids. When you beat a gym leader you should be able to either catch the Type of pokemon the Gym battles with and/or candy for a specific pokemon of the gym Type. The gyms will work as in 1v1 & the Gym leader pokemon level will adjust depending on your level. This way we* DONT need people to help & i think it would be more fun/cool this way. Nick if you see this, care to put you opinion on this ?

This is never going to happen. Niantic has to make the game different from pokemon. Nick covered this in another episode that Niantic can't make the game to similar to the main series games so that means no plot, no gym challenge, no e4 and no npc. Besides the game is focused on collab and having assigned gym leaders with 1vnpc isn't collab at all. This idea will never be added to pokemon go. Sorrry man.
