Some of the footage here is seen in another video and I had some leftover footage that wasn't long enough to warrant its own video. It made more sense to make one comprehensive Columbus video, though the footage is shown in the order it was spliced together, not by location. This was taken by Paul Geiger, who was furloughed from being a tower operator in 1971. He shortly went to train service until being hired back as a tower operator the following year. 0:00 - Entering Buckeye Yard from the Western Branch at CP-Darby 0:14 - CP-Buckeye from the Western Lead 0:49 - Shoving a southbound into Buckeye Yard 3:00 - Grandview Yard 3:56 - Columbus Union Station throat 4:19 - Passing the remnant of Yards A and B. 4:31 - Alum Creek tower in distance. 4:37 - East Columbus tower 5:07 - Summit Station 5:25 - Pataskala 5:54 - Bricker Tower near Frazeysburg 7:04 - Departing Buckeye Yard via CP-East Alton 7:18 - site of Miami Crossing 7:38 - GN Tower on the B&O Midland Sub 7:49 - Scioto Tower/LM Cabin 8:17 - High St. tower 8:31 - US tower (right), Neilston tower (left) 8:39 - Cleveland Ave. 8:47 - Remnants of Yards A and B.
At 9:17 the crew is dealing with a “run thru” switch. That is a switch which was say lined for the straight but a move was made from the turnout and “ran thru” and forced the switch points open against the way they were lined. Thats why the switch handle is up off the latch. So an emergency repair is to force hold the points over with a piece of wood. Later a trackman will have to repair the switch lever mechanism.

This is quite possibly the best Penn Central footage to exist. Absolutely incredible!
Proto CR bonus points.

Great classic footage! -Jenny
At .37 that HAD to be trackage near then new Buckeye Yard. Only time you'd see track in that kind of pristine shape on Penn Central!
great to see these great memories of the PC so nice to see all the record of the past!
Thank you for sharing this.
Wow classic
1971......quite possibly the Low Tide of American Railroading.
But an interesting time for sure
