Once upon a time there was the Cleveland Transit System (CTS) which became the Regional Transit Authority (RTA). Photos at Windermere station and Union Terminal from the 60s bring back the memories. While the Rapid on the West side was extended from Terminal Tower all the way out to Cleveland Hopkins Airport. Seemingly, no attempt was made to extend the Rapid East beyond Windermere to the Eastern Suburbs and Lake County.

As a kid I would visit my grandmother with my family about once or twice a year during the '50s and '60s. She lived in Shaker Heights near the end of the Van Aken line. I remember the Rapid Transit trains quite well as Grandma's apartment was just across the street from the train line. As I recall, the older Rapid Transit cars were all gray in color. They were phased out by the '60s, replaced by the yellow cars. I also remember playing in an empty field next to our Grandma's apartment building and was really angry when they built what seemed to me to be a 20 story apartment building next door on my playing field. As a kid it seemed like 20 stories tall, but according to your photos they were like six stories. That was the last new apartment building in the series of 6 or 8 such apartment buildings they built down that side of Van Aken Blvd, all looking pretty much the same. There was a golf course behind these apartment buildings, including Grandma's older 3-story apartment building. I also remember the shopping center across from the Van Aken station at the end of the line. We also rode the Rapid Transit a bunch of of times with our parents and Grandma to go shopping or to eat out. Your video brings back some good memories.

Ah yes! When America was America and when American transit systems had class. And I am a New Yorker who remembers going to Downtown Brooklyn in 1968 with my little brother and our late parents on the Myrtle Ave el and half of that line still had wooden stations and platforms and stairways down to the street. In Old America in Old New York City!

I remember the trackless trollies, a rubber tire bus that ran on electric from an overhead line like the streetcars. We lived not to far from the " car barns " on East 49 and Harvard. What a novel idea in todays world of green energy an electric bus....

Hi Ed, Thanks for watching and for your comment. Cleveland ran trackless trolleys (aka trolleybuses) from 1936 to 1963, and the fleet included 32 Brill, 128 Pullman, 175 St. Louis, 125 Marmon-Herrington, 1 Twin. Nowadays the pus is for electric buses without the poles or wires, but they haven't been too successful yet, especially in hilly areas. There are still 5 US cities with trackless operations, the closest to Cleveland is Dayton. Stay well. Cheers, tassiebaz.

The Pullman trolleys were similar to those in Boston, except that the Boston trolleys built by Pullman had large picture windows and no small standee windows and no push out lower windshields in the front, but were also multi coupled like those here. The Boston ones were bought brand new in 1951. The last PCC trolleys built in the U.S.were built by the St, Luis Car Co.in 1952. They also built PCC trolleys for European countries before in 1948 and after the last American ones were built.

@@tassiebaz Back in the 1970s I took my late mother to Boston on a holiday weekend and we rode a 2 trolley car train coupled together for the large crowds. By April 1957 the last trolley line in NYC and also New York State ended.

4:05 The RTA streetcar that is green line used to go around that loop track right there, it doesn't know how to go get on the eastbound track like go in reverse or something because it's not a light rail just a streetcar so it went all the way around to get to the eastbound track right there before RTA light rail came out.
