    It is such a magnificent locomotive. I never got to see H2 in steam as I was born in the same year it came out of service in 1994. The last time I looked over H2 was in late 2021, and the loco is in very good condition. Hopefully one day we will get the chance to see it running up the Derwent Valley again. Thank you for sharing these memories.

    I visited Pittsburg several times and got to ride the PCC cars near the end of their service while they still ran on the streets Downtown the first time I visited. It was interesting later to see them with pantographs and running in the subway. I did get to ride the route over the hill instead of through the tunnel and thought that was very scenic especially inbound to the city as you saw the skyline of downtown Pittsburgh as you came downhill. I am glad that they did save the south side routes of today but would hope they reopen the hillside route on a regular basis again instead of only using it when maintenance is being done in the tunnel. One thing I did notice particularly on the video with the still shots of the PCC’s you could see why one of the reasons the trolley routes were abandoned. Both the track and the cars themselves looked in bad shape. There was much rust at the bottom of the PCC cars and the track looked poor in many parts of the street running. With poor funding from both the state and counties PAT Transit just could not afford to keep such a large system running. The same could be said about the Philadelphia surface trolley system.

    • @tassiebaz
      @tassiebaz 5 дней назад

      Hi John, Thanks for watching and for your insightful comment. Pittsburgh trolley lines were like nowhere else. I missed the West End, but most of the rest of the system was still running when I first got there. I made many trips after that to enjoy and finally commiserate when lines were closed. Much of the streetcar abandonment was due to specific decisions by management who had interest in operating buses and didn't put much into maintenance. At least some sense prevailed, and the two South side lines were saved as well as the diversion. It's a shame it wasn't more. Cheers, tassiebaz. 😄

    It’s funny to think that the route went out as far as Simon’s Valley. There must have been an enormous amount of investment in the infrastructure to install that extensive a system. It’s a shame it was all dismantled in the name of “progress” and cheap petroleum, because if it had been kept and maintained the city would now be considered very forward thinking to have all electric buses and a few of the old buses would be a retro novelty for visiting tourists.

      Hi entropybentwhistle, Thanks for watching and for your comment. Yes, Calgary was very progressive with regard to trolleybuses until they weren't. Unfortunately, they weren't the only ones. There were trolleybuses in Edmonton, Winnipeg, Halifax, Cornwall, Thunder Bay, Saskatoon, Toronto, Kitchener, Hamilton, Montreal, Regina, Saskatoon, and Ottawa. The only Canadian to retain their trolleybuses is Vancouver. Cheers, tassiebaz. 😄

    I rode the 66 and the ride was really nice. In 1974 my fellow graffiti artists and I graffed the trolley buses and it was a ripper to see our artwork roll by on the 59,66, and the 75. I was 15,going on 16. The reality was that that was the way things were in Philadelphia at that time. I am amazed that trackless trolleys aren’t even a mention in any transit plans broached in North America. I’m appalled that so much money and resources are being wasted on the stupidity of battery electric vehicles.

      Hi user-oy2xc7yf4i, Thanks for watching and for your informative comment. As you probably know, SEPTA tried to replace trackless trolleys on routes 29 and 79 in South Philadelphia with electric buses and failed miserably. The buses just couldn't perform. San Francisco, Seattle, and Vancouver all have a large trackless trolley system and are continually getting newer vehicles. I'd be surprised to ever see that happen in Philadelphia. Cheers, tassiebaz. 😄

    I’m so glad to see old no. 73 after all these years. My grandfather was a conductor for the Red Arrow lines and I was a trolley crossing guard at School Lane and Huey Avenue in 1968-1972 from Saint Andrew’s School. I took the Media trolley to and from my music lessons many times a week and loved every time I got on board. As a model railroader I make sure to include brill trolleys on every layout.

    They had pretty much all the same road and traffic infrastructure as today, (pavement, sidewalks, traffic signals, storm and sanitary drains, water mains, etc) with fewer taxpayers to pay for it all yet their taxes equivalent were much lower per capita and per property. That generation must have been smarter and much more efficient?…I worked in an Architects office at Oak and Broadway in the early 60’s…Thank you for assembling and posting this history.

    I rode the 29 end to end maybe 2 times before I moved to NY in 1976. I find it hard to fathom that septa replaced this and the 79 with battery electric busses,how stupid!

    I was 7 going on 8 when the 75 was cut back to the el. The line crossed the 56 trolley line and continued to the river. Unfortunately that part of the line was a casualty of I95 just like the el was between Market and Girard..Unfortunately I never got to ride this part of the line.

    • @tassiebaz
      @tassiebaz 2 месяца назад

      Hi user-oy2xc7yf4i, Thanks again for watching. At least the El was just relocated and not replaced with a bus (Route J). Before it was shortened, there was no wire on Penn Street from Orthodox to Arrott, so all trips from Wayne Junction had to go to Bridesburg to get back to Frankford. There was a cutback at Orthodox and Edmund, But I don't remember any scheduled trips through there. The service was very frequent, with some headways of only 3 minutes in the rush hour. Right before the route shortening, the wire was installed on Penn Street (current route) with a switch at Orthodox and Penn, so some trips used that. Cheers, tassiebaz. 😁

    My Lord, what a complicated overhead mess! No wonder they gave up on these! I rode on a couple of these with my Nana in Cleveland, and I remember the remember the driver getting out to put the poles back on the wires.

    • @tassiebaz
      @tassiebaz 2 месяца назад

      Hi davidkean1487, Thanks for watching and for your comment. If the overhead is properly maintained and the operators trained adequately, a system like this works fine with few dewirements. San Francisco and Seattle currently have trolleybus systems with complex junctions and there are no problems. Chicago just wanted to substitute buses as did many cities about that time. Cheers, tassiebaz.

If you are interested and haven't seen them, I have videos on RUclips of the F line (and the E line) on my channel as well as lots of Philadelphia streetcar videos. Cheers, tassiebaz. 😄
