I totally agree. I love the way those old soundblaster chips sound, but I really don't like the percussion mode on them. It splits up the individual operators within a voice and uses them differently to make the percussion sounds, so there's not a lot that you can do to make each of the drum voices sound good. The reason the chips had this function is because it makes a handful of percussion voices without using up all of the voices on the chip, so you can still have synth voices playing alongside them. I think it would have been much better if twisted electrons ditched the native drum mode and the synth tracks, and instead made a custom drum sound with each of the 9 voices, and limited the parameter ranges so they all sounded distinct. Like instead of being able to control the envelopes of all the ops in a voice, you'd have specific parameters depending on what kind of drum sound you were making, kind of like the Model:Cycles. That would have been so much cooler in my opinion.
Yeah, agreed. The interlinking of them means that you are limited with live tweaking as each change impacts the other elements in an unpredictable manner that I ultimately just didn't like
@@CatFish107 Yeah no problem. Yamaha tried to make their computer chips as flexible as possible so developers could use them in a bunch of different ways. The ones in the Blastbeats are OPL3 chips, aka YMF262. You can look it up on wikipedia and there's a list of the different configurations of the operators you can use. Which I think further proves that Twisted Electrons could have done something a bit more interesting with them lol
My favorite piece of kit in my studio, but it took a while. My "eureka" moment was when I got so frustrated with the boring sounds and sequences I was getting, I just had Reaper throw random midi at it while I hammered the "wiggle" button. Inevitably I got a really unsettling soundbed of crunchy digital squeals and filth, (which is kinda my thing), and I fell in love. Im sure it was intended to be treated as a melodic groovebox, but it really shines as a weird idea/texture generator.
@StephenMcLeod I dont know if you heard about the knew synth they are working on, but it might be more up your ally, The twistfm. I kinda hope the megafm gets a similar treatment, and they make a groovebox version.
I think some of the magic is in creating kit 'templates' and then using 'Clear/Kit-Patten' to initialize the pattern... and then externally sequencing it from another device. I posted a Christmas song where we did exactly that and it really opened up the possibilities. Plus, since we externally sequenced it, this allowed for a longer, more complex melody... namely 'Deck the Halls'. We did another track that hasn't been posted yet where we just used the internal sequencer and paired it with a Korg Drumlogue and Polyend Play. And sure, it's internal sequencer is fine... but I really found externally sequencing it with an initialized pattern was the best way to make use of its various tracks!
I love mine, its not something you would purchase as a first synth or drum machine, its something you'd purchase if you've already got all bases covered, I love blast beats because I put it thru my two Quadraverbs and it instantly takes me back to 90's warp records.
I have the TherapSID 2 and the AY3 chip tune synths from Twisted Electrons. I don’t think I’d pick this one up though. That’s one thing I love about the TherapSID - breaking out one to one controls for it.
I can relate to the mixed emotions. As one who loves the sound of Autechre and AFX, the 'Blast-Beats' is basically an IDM machine in a compact, fader-laden, screenless metal box. And it is possible to coax very awesome sounds out of it... dare I say... it is even possible to get it to be predictable!! But... my biggest issues are as follows. In my 'Blast-Beats', two faders on the snare were lose. Initializing a track doesn't clear out any previous parameter locking. So I have to stay on the 'clear' menu and clear out each fader. If I want my pattern to sound close to the same each time I fire it up, I have to basically re-parameter-lock every single fader position. The ability to save only 16 patterns is far to small of a number. Midi channels are fixed... 1 - 4 are the 'synths' and 10 is the 'percussion'. So, you have to change midi assignments on other devices when playing together for more maximist compositions. But... knowing these issues/limitations has allowed me to find ways to coax some FM magic out of the device... and utilize it in combination with other grooveboxes and synths. I found that the best way for me to enjoy the 'Blast-Beats' is to externally sequence it from another device like our MPC One, or the Polyend Play. To do so... you will need to clear/initialize the 'Blast-Beats', otherwise, there will be unwanted midi chatter. In the spirit of the holidays, we made a Christmas song using the more twinkly side of the 'Blast-Beats', as well as combining its percussion with beats from my Korg Drumlogue.... as well as some sleighbells and timestretched drunken caroling from a certain Christmas movie from the 1980s, by way of the MPC One and Polyend Play, respectively. m.ruclips.net/video/oA1AaPPv4pQ/видео.html And once again... W/O Timestretched Caroling m.ruclips.net/video/b4gK6Tyx1ag/видео.html Admittedly, I found that after delving into the 'Cross-FM' engine on my Roland SH-4d, I was able to make very similar sounds with more consistency and certainty. But I suppose that it is the uncertainty that is part of the 'Blast-Beats' charm. I probably will keep my 'Blast-Beats' around for a bit... as it's fun to explore the space between chaos and order. Plus, I plan on sampling more beats/loops/breaks from this thing. Cheers and Happy Holidays from the land of Delco PA!!
I can see how this has it's own vibe and looks fun, but can imagine you have to be completely in love with it. Would have been good to see it paired with the Lossy.
Just got one of these and went from excited to frustrated to "wait, is it broken?" to actually reading thr manual, updating the firmware and watching the tutorial and now I'm starting to "get it." There's a certain unpredictability you have to embrace, but havibg said tbat, once I eventually got the hang of saving a few patterns properly and routing it through a bass amp... it sounds like absolutely nothing else. I think you do need decent speakers/amp to get the most from its low end, which, speaking as a bassist, is there, waiting to be discovered.
I'm guessing you know this but if you want the Sound Blaster sound, Twisted Electrons is coming out with a dedicated synth soon called the TwistFM. It's basically a sound blaster version of the MegaFM, just with a bunch more parameter controls. Also is twice the price tho.
Thanks for the reminder. I had actually totally forgotten. It does sound awesome from the demos, and I might be tempted, though it'll be a while before I work myself up to splash that kinda cash again.
The blast beats internal sequencer wasnt it for me, but once i threw the t1 feeding it, it was fun to tweak it around. But def wasnt my favorite from their machines. Looking forward to the swift though, can't wait to get mine.
Its crazy how much I have learned about synths because of you and I am a photographer who found you because of your old photography videos. You still doing photography at all?
I've got to say, one thing I noticed in watching, when you changed a parameter and the sound went wonky you weren't resetting that parameter back, but going straight to another random parameter, and so on. I know its just filler whilst you're explaining something, but it didn't seem fair. Don't get me wrong, I love your work, I guess when you're really not feeling a synth it's difficult to be enthusiastic. I've come across a few like that myself. I have to say, when the DX7 came out I was exactly the same. Partly the interface, but mainly the sound. All that clangy boomy stuff was my uncanny valley being a bit biomechanoid (strange really as I love H.R.Geiger's art) up until about 2 years ago when I heard a few songs done on Arturias DX7 V on RUclips and the sounds blew my mind. Well, that it was a DX7 making them. Okay the yamaha chip in the blast beats is no dx7 but I'm now itching to play with those parameters 😂 I get you about the price. Also, put it in a plastic case - more in keeping with the sound and will save another tenner 😉
That was partly to demonstrate things, but also because one of the issues was that... things wouldn't go wonky on *that particular parameter*. As in, if you adjusted the hi-hat and got a sound you liked, that could throw off the snare entirely, and so you then had to try adjust the snare. That's part of how the thing is set up with the voices impacting each other, and part of what the struggle was!
@StephenMcLeod I get the feeling that the chip used has narrow parameter bands that "work" and everything in between is a no-mans land of weird. I think this type of synth is better served as a virtual one, where saving these "islands of stability" can be found (if you can be asked😉) and saved, rather than hardware. Cheers 🤘
@TheDavidPoole right! I like the weird usually but it just didn't get me this time. I've seen some cool suggestions from folks who sequence it randomly over midi that seemed fun but it was too spendy for me to keep just for that. Thanks for having a watch!
Do the step FX work when its being triggered by midi? And do patterns now support program change? I think it sounds absolutely amazing 😍, I do appreciate the insight (didn't know parts had interactions with each other/ that is the first time anyone mentioned it ..Thx!
I got into a similar trap with Landscape Noon. It's even more weird and crazy, and I saw some amazing demos, which are really hard to replicate and most of the time require a lot of effects to put on top. The same way I saw some cool demos of Blast Beats, but ultimately decided that it's not for me, as I think I would have come to the similar conclusion as you.
Yeahhh I think it's tough because we get caught up in possibilities, and often folks aren't too honest or open about the limitations of gear. Limitations are fine. In fact they can be great, but also often overlooked in the pursuit of something new.
I don't have one, but I've had my eye on it for a while and do have MEGAfm mk1/TherapSID mk3/AY3. I'd be using this for a weird glitchy rhythmic layer to sync with a more traditional drum machine I think. So I wouldn't be bothered if the kick/snare changed because I was editing other parameters.. if anything I'd want that evolution Cheers for the vid
I was so stoked for this thing...took me 6 months to realise I wasn't bonding with it. Was kinda shocked...just left me cold somehow. Would've been better as a less drum focused creature, a sort of retro Enner
Sounds like a volca drum might legitimately be a better fit for your use case. I just got one, but I'm having too much fun messing with the kick to really dig into the parameters on the drum.
I have plenty of drum machines to do proper stuff. I hoped this would be a glitchy interesting box I could tweak but it just didn't work out that way. Glad it is for you though!!
@StephenMcLeod Lol, nah mate, I was not clear about that. I meant I just got a volca drum, but have been preoccupied with the volca kick (surprise hit with my 7yo daughter. She loves making big thumps). Yeah, and I was thinking the volca drum has a lot of the same sort of digital fm glitch possibilities, but I could be off track on that front too. Anyhoo, thanks for the thoughts and insights. Whatever yer talking about in these vids is always interesting to hear.
Yeah - that's how I was using it largely... I was hoping for glitchy interesting top sounds, though the sounds just never quite grabbed me unfortunately. :/ Even with a compressor they could be way over the place.
