I think you are right on point there Brad. Us Gen Xers grew up feeling deeply, with a strong conscience, but sometimes those feelings get overwhelming to the point where the again typical Gen X defence mechanism kicks in and the cynical walls come up and we "feel nothing". We are a moody complicated bunch but we made some CRACKIN music from it.

👏 This is older alternative , indie rock. They were at the same time as Nirvana, Pixies, Sonic Youth, Jane's Addiction. '80s and 90s. Loved all of these bands those years growing up.

  • @mkmstillstackin

I can't say enough about this band. Loved them back in the day! Often overlooked but really helped to set the stage of early grunge. The Green Mind CD, although old, still really smacks. "Wagon" and "Puke & Cry" were two of their first I ever heard that blew my mind. "Little Fury Things" is also an awesome really old one. But, they've gone through a number of stages since then, and have tons of songs from later albums. "Out there" from the Where you Been album is also one that's really good. Edit: Brad totally caught the meaning.

Brad nailed it! Its' feeling pain for other people's mishaps and feelings. He also loves indie/alt/alt rock and Garage punk. No shocker. lol. Lex kinda does at times, but throws her for a loop lol. The musical structure, punk influences, vocal style, etc.
They were an '80s/'90s alt/indie rock band. Garage punk. College rock. Played often on college radio stations and alt stations. Music videos on alt night on MTV. 120 Minutes, Alternative Nation, Cutting Edge back in the '80s and '90s. Beavis and But.thead shows too.
Early alt rock band like REM, Dinosaur Jr, Replacements, DEVO, B-52s, Ween, The Cure, Meat Puppets, Smithereens, Flaming Lips, Violent Femmes, Eels, XTC, RHCP, Nada Surf, B Hole Surfers, Pixies, Pavement, Nada Surf, Husker Du, etc. Gen X alt/indie music . Again, we need another '80s/'90s alt/indie rock stream! lol Been awhile now.
Didn't really start in the '90s, Brad. Really in the '80s. Moody. Especially alternative music.
Also bands like Dinosaur JR, Pixies, Sonic Youth, Radiohead, Husker Du, Nada Surf, etc populurized the dynamic shifts (slow mellow to quick fast upbeat, back and forth) in vocals/music. Which became popular in the late '80s, early '90s and beyond. Bands like Nirvana, other grunge bands, post-grunge, alt rock, Built To Spills, Weezer, shoegazy bands like Deftones, Smashing Pumpkins, My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, in future years were influenced from this.
Dinosaur JR had other great songs/videos yall should check out. "Take It Back", "Freak Scene", "Start Choppin", "The Wagon", The Cure cover "Just Like Heaven", etc

I was an Alt-Rock fan back in the early '90s, but it took me awhile to warm to Dinosaur Jr. Even though I'd been aware of the band for several years prior by name only and schoolmates and friends who were fans who wore their t-shirts, this song was my gateway into them. Well, let's just say that I was underwhelmed at first listen. There didn't seem to be any point to the repetitive and seemingly minimalist lyrics with its message going over my head. So, I dismissed the band. A few years later, I get into bassist, Lou Barlow's side-project bands, Sebadoh and Folk Implosion, not knowing of his involvement in Dinosaur Jr. until one of my old college friends clued me in a few years later when I scored tix to a Sebadoh concert and invited him to be my guest for the other ticket. Some years later, I hear the song again through a new set of ears and in, of all places, one of these 24-hr. oversized warehouse grocery stores. I was working a 3rd-shift shelf-stocking task when this song came on the overhead Muzak PA system (a speaker was literally directly above where I was working; so, the sound wasn't muted by distance, and I couldn't escape it if I'd wanted to), and all of a sudden, out of nowhere, the deceptive simplicity and seeming superficiality of that chorus melted away, and its message hit me like a ton of bricks, and I had to take a moment to get ahold of myself, because I was literally on the verge of experiencing an emotional breakdown while listening to a song while on-the-clock at work. While I did have a spasm of tears overtake me, I didn't have a complete breakdown. For context, this was in the couple/few years after the Great Recession which followed the housing market collapse of 2007/'08. I'd experienced homelessness for the first (but not the only) in my life not long after first going unemployed in those immediate weeks after that recession began. I'd only just gotten that job a cpl./few months prior to this moment with this song and was still technically homeless (although staying with a friend and his wife who were nice enough to let me live in their basement, rent-free, 'til I'd saved enough income from that job to get a place of my own). Parallel to this upheaval in my personal life, there'd been a streak of deaths in my family and within various circles of friends. The family deaths weren't the source of major psychological blogs given that they were both of my grandmothers (maternal first, and paternal second -- about 5 years apart); so, those deaths were expected but still grieved, nonetheless. It's the deaths of friends of various ages that really took a toll on me during those years. Several were cancer-related. A few were substance-abuse-related. Others were accidental deaths. And more than one were suicides. These compounded one on another to the point where before I had the chance to complete the grieving cycle for one loss, here came another one for me to either grapple with while still grieving the earlier loss or compartmentalize away to deal with another time. Added to all of this, I didn't find out about some of these deaths until weeks or even months after-the-fact -- well after shared mutual friends had had the opportunity to go to their funerals, but no one had thought to reach out to me to be included into the community of their mourners. So, with all of this compounding loss and resulting emotional trauma that I'd experienced over a relatively short span of time, I think hearing this song in that moment was an emotional outlet that I needed in order to help me with my grieving process and also dedicate myself to fixing my then-current situation
Luckily for me, it was 2 or 3 in the morning, and I was alone in my aisle -- the handful of patrons and other staff present were elsewhere in the store. After the song was over, I still needed a little recovery time in order to regain my psychological bearings and settle my emotions so that I could return to focusing on the stocking task that I had been in the middle of before this song came on.
Because of the healing that culminated from hearing this song in that moment, it is now one of my all-time favorites from that era, and every time I hear it come on my Bluetooth speaker at work (not 3rd-shift grocery store shelf-stocking) via random shuffle play of whatever playlist I pre-selected, I sing along to that chorus, and really belt it out, because I seriously have felt the pain of everyone, and then when I've reached my maximum capacity for feeling empathetic and sympathetic pain for others, I feel nothing -- and that's OK
