    the dillards have been one of my favorites since the first time i saw them on andy griffith nearly 50 years ago.

    This was during the episode where the Darlings try to get Opie betrothed to their baby girl. I loved how in every Darlings episode there would be a running gag of sorts where they'd discuss which song to play and Briscoe would say something like "How about 'Don't Hit Your Granny With A Great Big Stick'? ". And Charlene would say "Oh Pa! That one makes me cry! 😢".

    Those were the days! No technical tricks and artificial sound magic, just human voices, and musical instruments. People having fun.

      Yup! This was 1963 man! My Grandmother hated the darlings. But liked everyone else. Barney was her favorite

      @@thecolorenhancmentchannel432 I grew up about 70 miles from Andy's fictional hometown of Mayberry (Mt Airy). The show was a romanticized version of life in small town north central NC back then but otherwise not terribly far off the mark. Mayberry was the hometown everyone wished they cane from. Wonderful memories of a better life in a better time..

    To answer a question posted below, "the old dude", and "the actor who counts" was played by Denver Pyle. He's probably best known for his role as Uncle Jesse on The Dukes Of Hazard.

      Jason O'Connell ~and an uncle off the Waltons. In the series, his family was run off their property to allow the sky line drive- Blue-Ridge Parkway to be built. Sad true history.

    My favorite scene of all the Andy Griffith shows is that cut to Barney trying to snap his fingers while he's drunk on "mulberry squezins." Too funny!

    The Darling , aka the Dillards were great. Those characters they played were pretty much right on the money . LOL Super talented , strange , wonderful folks , right out of the Smokey Mountains .The Andy Griffith show was the best.

    The Dillard's were so FINE! I remember watching A.G as a boy and thinking
    "this is some real good sounding music." Later realizing that the reason behind that was because one of the best Bluegrass bands ever was playing for REAL and not just casting directors doing there thing!
    If "The Darlings" just would have had Earnest T. Bass (Howard Morris) dancing to that music....."He He He He"

    We all prefer the black & white episodes but the color Mayberry episodes aren't crap.
    They are still better than any current sitcom on TV.

      +Huyên Nguyễn I am not an expert, but I'd say that's blue grass music, which is a sub-genre of Appalachian. These guys are from Missouri, which is not Appalachia, but that doesn't mean that's not App. music. PBS made a special on Appalachia, which discusses their music. It was excellent! Check the library, that's where I got it.

    Doug Dillard died May 16, 2012 in Nashville, Tn. at the age of 75. He played the Banjo as part of the Darling family on the Andy Griffith show. His idol was Banjo player Earl Scruggs who passed away only months prior to Doug on March 29th.
