Making Metal Letters using Rebar for a Sign - Without Heat - Rebar MIG Welding Project

- This is how I make metal letters using rebar to be used in a metal sign. I bent this rebar lettering without heating it before bending the rebar. These sorts of things make great DIY creative garden art or wall art, it does not have to be a rebar advertising sign like I made.
I plan to leave the "Gavin Clark DIY" sign on my workbench where it is now, it will get quite a beating from sparks from grinding and getting hit by steel at times, and the bench does get wet when it is raining and the wind is blowing, so even though I have sprayed it I do expect it to rust over time, and it may need a bit of maintenance if I decide the rust does not add to the rustic look of the sign. I enjoy making metal letters is a nice MIG Welding Project using rebar.
I coated this with Penetrol Rust Treatment Penetrates Rust 300g Aerosol Spray and then put a topcoat of Semi-Gloss Clear Coat
The main tools used were a MIG welder, angle grinder, drill, bench vise, and swivel “V” magnets.
The big rebar is 18mm, and the small rebar that I made the letters with is 12mm or (1/2 inch rebar)

How often do you need to re-apply penetrol to prevent rust?
@@hipairbrush1053 I have given that two good coats, and then put two coats of semi-gloss over the top, so this one is sealed in unless it gets hit it should get a lot of years out of it, If you are just using Penetrol, it's a watch and see, if water can get through it through a new crack or from the other side of the metal, you will see a change to it, and you would just clean it up and recoat. Hope that helps a bit.

A work of art! You’ve carved quite a niche for yourself with two pipe scraps and a vice! You did surprise me on the “K” though! I’d have bet you’d have bent a V to make the right half. Thank you very much Tom, I did think of bending the K but then to make it a nice tight fit like the others there would have been extra grinding, and doing it in the three bits makes it look a bit classy looking I think. This is awesome! I wonder, though, why the letter "I" has serifs, while the remainder of the upper case letters are sans (without) serifs?

El acabado que utilicé fue: Tratamiento de óxido de Penetrol hecho por Flood, y la capa superior fue Dulux dura max transparente semibrillante.

another great, inspiring creation, Gavin! Since my first encounter with your knotted door handle projects I"ve been trying to imagine how one could execute numeral characters. Are those compound bends even possible?
There is normally a way to do most bends, and if it can't be done the welder fixes that problem, even without heat. Hope that helps
Seems i'm having trouble with my recent batch of rebar breaking more while bending. Maybe i got a bad batch.
Try to never bend it too far in one direction, as when you bend it back a bit as you went too far for what you want it will crack, it doesn't seem to like being re-bent backwards. But as you say you may have a harder batch, remember rebar is not meant to be bent tight like this. Heat will help if you have problems.

Another winner! Is there a particular kind of rebar you buy? I looked online and there are different kinds. I know you're not using Stainless (right?) and I'm thinking a low alloy. Thanks!
Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it. I have never used stainless steel in any videos, the rebar I use is standard quality steel rebar used on house slabs, and bought off the shelf in most steelyards or hardware places. The code on the 1/2 inch (12mm) rebar is D 500N Hope that helps

One day I may do one, but just have a play, clamp it in the vice in the middle, bend it one way, flip it over, clamp it in the same spot, and bend the side. have a few goes and you will get it good. I wish you the best for your project.
I would have had a 5 gal bucket of scrap after doing that.
Hahaha, I am sure you would find a second use for all your little bent bits, but that is how you get better at it all by doing it, Thank you for your comment.
