Video Game Collecting In 2022 Is Downright AWFUL

- I consider myself pretty passionate about collecting video games and can't see myself stopping. That said, the hobby finds itself in its most expensive position yet. Between Limited Run, Nintendo's artificial scarcity, nostalgia, and the willy-nilly changing of prices, we have a volatile market that's extremely unpredictable.

It really went downhill when people got into it as an investment and not as a hobby they enjoyed. The whole "buy low, sell high," and "invest and wait for demand to skyrocket," among others. I've only ever bought games with the intent of having that game in my collection and being able to play it. But nowadays everything has to be turned into a business model. Dare I say it, many game collectors you'll see online don't really care about gaming in itself, they only see a potential investment.
Although I do a bit of reselling alongside collecting, I like the value of my items to be maintained and potentially go up. Doesn’t sit well if you just dump money into a hobby and the money just disappears or no way to get a return back in the future due to whatever reason. I think the grading aspect is the main contributor to the “investment” mindset that people are in nowadays,
I think when people started collecting beyond what they could actually play, that’s where I have an issue. But yeah, resellers and flippers are the fucking worst.
@@owenmiller8373 I’ve been gaming since 1988. Would you like to guess how many games I’ve sold?
0. I’ve sold none of my games. Prices going up or down are irrelevant to me as I don’t sell shit. Now, that means that I’m currently in possession of some games that are worth thousands of dollars on their own. And hell, since I’ve basically embraced ODEs, Flashcarts, modded consoles, and so on, I really don’t have a need for a lot of those games anymore. But I don’t resell anything really. Except for a few cars I’ve sold when I bought a new one, when I’ve been done with stuff, I’ve either given it to friends and family or donated it.
With what I’ve discovered about gross af flippers/resellers, now I would never donate shit.
The outrageous prices for loose and used games on top of resellers using it as an investment really incentivizes pirating and emulation. So now people who want to play them won't buy and the people with physical copies are selling to each other in a bubble
It’s happened with every hobby. Even Lego sets are investments.
Trading in a rare retro collection for a modern system is easily the biggest mistake anybody could do.
Trading in almost any collection for a new system is a mistake. You usually get dirt in terms of trade in value and odds are that you will eventually want to play those games again. I got lucky as a kid. learned that lesson on a small scale and never repeated it. I traded in a couple of games to get one that I thought I wanted more. The game turned out to be not that good and not too long after that I wished I had the other games. Because of that I never traded systems and my games in towards the next new thing.
I never understood it. I was never tempted to do it even once. And my family did not have a lot of money. But selling my video games? There was just no fucking way. Even my mom would have been against it since she was often the one shelling out $60 (in 1994) per game.
LMAO "the biggest"?
@Omega Mutant lmao this is a dumb comment
@Omega Mutant That's matter of an opinion. Some have funner with retro vs modern and vise versa.
I never traded in entire game collections because my parents told me I would regret if I could not play those games anymore. Boy were they right and I’ve still got everything.
my dad told me but i never understood
broke my ps2 cuz i wanted to take apart
i played that thing heavily too
good thing i still have all my games on ps2
Well I didn't listen to my mom and deeply regret it, sold a good portion of both me and my brothers collection for little or nothing.
Missed playing some of the stuff I sold, and now hear I am years later rebuying stuff I already had for far higher prices than what I originally bought then sold them for.
And the worst part of all is I'm still not completely done, only system I've gotten back so far is my PS2.
All because I was too lazy to get off my ass and get a job to buy new games and was looking for an easy way out.
Sometimes our parents know what the hell they be talking about, we're just too young and dumb sometimes to listen to what they have to say until it's too late.
My parents taught me that same thing and boy am I glad I listened!
My parents gave my collection away when I left for college. They figured I was grown up and didn’t need games any more. Same thing with my comic
collection.
When I came home on break, I asked “where’s my stuff?”
Thanks Mom and Dad!
This is the unfortunate self destructive nature of collectable anything. Some people turn collecting hobbies into investments and ruin it for the people who just like these games.
Happened with people who liked to collect model trains and baseball cards in decades past. Same sh*t, different hobby and decade is all.
Just like Pokemon cards
I think literally ANY retro collecting has become insane. I have a friend who collects and sells classic VW cars. He says that the car he drives has risen over 60,000 bucks in the past few years for pretty much no reason. My wife and I had a garage sale and we had loads of people looking for classic action figures and toys. It’s wild out there
it really is cl0wn w0r1d now
There are too many people and too few things that can be assigned decent values.
People have no interest in the future so they yearn for their childhood, simpler times acting as a warm blanket. Metaphorically speaking.
@@tylerdean980 worlds a horrible place. Nothing to put any hope in for so many.
Even the Rose Tico action figure is in demand!
Ok. Maybe not.
when i started collecting around 2010/2011, gamestop was selling gamecube games as cheap as $1.99. i remember picking up several tony hawk games, super mario sunshine, and melee for less than $20
this isn't just the case for video game collecting, the entire second hand market has become ridiculously expensive to the point where it's almost impossible to get decent deals
Almost feels like somehow it's done intentionally so as to make it so that corporations selling new items know people are not spending as much on used items that take their potential "profits" away 🤔 this is why I am turning back to trying to barter for things that are used
It's not anyone's fault but your's that you can't afford your habits. It's a business, the world is a business as soon as you find that out the better off you be not just in this sense but in life grow the hell up.
@@lordeowstheking what are you even saying? My point is that for a lot of articles you're better off buying new rather than used ones, which is a shame...
@@lordeowstheking And when everything skyrockets as everything falls apart, simply having money isn't going to help much. Learning how to barter and trade IS a form of business far older than money and is a fundamental skill for survival that doesn't involve pieces of meaningless paper, or even more meaningless crypto. Sometimes a person CAN afford the cost of the older collectibles, they just would rather keep their money in case inflation gets even worse as well. Trading is a good option. One that large corporations wouldn't like because it stops the flow of money to them. Not saying your perspective isn't valid, but telling someone to grow up is an attack on someone else's two cents, limits views, and is in no way constructive or conducive to a safe and open environment for any community or conversation. It is aggressive. Hope this helps
Absolutely. It's sad that second-hand stores used to be places for low/limited income people to find and meet their needs--now it's all ebay stores, basically. They have video games behind glass, and so on. Even clothes are starting to be separated per brand because resellers have made it a mess.
For me, the best time to collect was around 2014-2015, towards the end of the ps3 era. Ps1 games like Koudelka and Xenogears were under $40. PS2 games were very affordable, even for RPGs and horror games. I put a lot of energy into collecting at this time, and now I pretty much just focus on current or previous gen.
You're a lucky man
Same time I started. While Nintendo games were starting to climb up, most CIB Sega games were EXTREMELY affordable back then
Man I wish I stuck with it. Ironically I got into collecting SNES games at the time. Got a lot of good games for cheap, and I remember looking at games like Mario RPG and saying “mmmmm nah, 70 bucks is just too much for this…” little did I know lol
I just bought a used copy of Xenosaga 3 for $270, 270!!!!! I really wish I started seriously collecting games sooner, I can imagine it was so much nicer back then
@@twilighttoast01 What! I'd much rather just go for emulation. I'm not selling my kidney for even a 10/10 game.
Yeah, it’s become very depressing. Back when games were cheaper, I didn’t have as much income, so I would love finding those rare gems and not having to pay an extreme amount of money for them. It was so exciting going into a game store. Now, as I’ve gotten older and have more disposable income, shit has just become insane. Now when I walk in I think “gee, I wonder what insanely expensive game that used to be $20 they’ll have today?”
This is depressing? Lol grow a set and get a real problem.
Yeah you make a lot of sense! I remember as a kid, thinking $40 for a game was expensive. Now you pay nearly 100 for a glitchy type game, with possible freezes and broken achievements.
@@lordeowstheking🤡
I think another factor is when someone gets into their mid 20s and has disposable income they want to reacquire things that made them happy from their childhood.
This is what led to the spike in NES games at the beginning of the 2010’s, the super Nintendo spike a couple years after that, and now the spike of PS1, PS2, and GameCube.
That's happening to people like me in our thirties as well.
The thing is. The NES and SNES have gone down alot. N64 and GameCube have skyrocketed.
To fight back the resellers I modded my GameCube, Dreamcast,PS2 systems to just play games off an SD card/Hard Drive and hacked my 3DS, Wii U and Vita. One of the best decisions I’ve ever done.
Same here
Amen!
Same here, was gonna make the same point. Everyone needs to know about how to do this for every system.
I did this to my ps3 but I still buy a game here and there. But if it's like painkiller yea I'm not paying $300 for that. So just downloaded the pkg or iso and boom I'm playing it.
This is the way.
It’s been abismal collecting older titles. Personally I’m trying to build up my GameCube collection. Recently bought a disc only Thousand Year Door copy for $60. Had the usual light wear on it. Luckily I had the original cib case I got from one of my friends. Prices are so high it’s such a good feeling when you find something at a decent price
People on Whatnot can be crazy. People pay that huge promo so a RUclips says there name. Yes some times you cna get a real good deal but if it’s a popular stream or a RUclips expect things to go 2-3x.
Gamecube prices are particularly insane at the moment. I'm collecting for PS2 and PS3 which have their expensive titles as well, but Gamecube is on another level right now for not even being "that" old yet.
I had 50+ GameCube games, 30+ N64 games, tons of PS2 and DS + 3DS games growing up but I sold the vast majority of them when I lost my job a few years back. I finally have a stable job so I'm trying to rebuild my collection but it seriously seems like a complete waste until the pricing bubble bursts. I probably sold my whole collection for $1.5k and it would cost well over $4k to get everything that I had. I desperately want these games and I'm worried about the prices to just rise and rise but I'd rather see what happens with the pricing than blow all this money just for prices to crash a few months later. It's super disappointing and I don't even have a few basic consoles (notably the 3DS) because of how crazy the prices are.
I bought a Japanese special edition GameCube and I'm seriously considering collecting Japanese GameCube games. They're so cheap compared to NA copies. Only issue is of course the language and that I want the classes that I had growing up, not the Japanese versions.
I heard the most expensive GameCube game ever is called FE Path of Raidiance, despite only 70% of the game completed.
@@therealjaystone2344I know right! The lowest I've seen FE in my area is 300 CAD (230 USD)
Everything is like this these days. From houses to cars to games to shoes. People wonder why things like inflation are so bad. There has to be value to things and the companies and sellers should make a profit but when things are so artificially inflated it becomes a powder keg. Anytime you see something that was once 50 dollars new cost 150 used were in for a rude awakening.
During my college years I moved quite a bit so I often downsized my stuff selling old games and consoles. Now I'm also trying to rebuild my collection and prices are getting out of control. Perfect example, I bought Need for Speed Underground and Need for Speed Most Wanted (2005) for PS2. Both games sold well so there are copies out there, however they sell on ebay for around $25 and $35 respectively. That is insane for games that sold millions of copies and most listing aren't even complete in box. Another example, I was interested in Motorstorm on PS3 but never played the series so I bought the original and Pacific Rift. Pacific Rift in particular is selling for nearly $40 right now. These are popular old games, not collectors items or rare titles. The more difficult games to find are selling for $100, $200, or in some cases even $300+. I think people should be compensated for owning and maintaining the games being sold, but prices are spiraling to ridiculous levels.
I sold off my NES and SNES games in the mid-90's because I was broke, and attempting to rebuild my collection a few years later was a struggle. There was a surge in pricing for SNES and PS1 RPGs in the early 2000's and the prices have only gone up since. You popularity of retro games on RUclips has helped to drive up demand, so it makes sense that the prices would rise along with that, though I think the grossly-inflated eBay prices go way overboard at times. I gave up on game collecting over a decade ago, it's become less of a fun hobby and more of a frustrating time and money pit.
I felt that opener. I remember packing up my NES and Sega Genesis stuff and walking 1 mile to the local mall to trade it all in for a PS1 and I still had to take money out of my savings for it. Now here I am 27 years later, still trying to recover all those games I originally owned.
same with my gamecube, I'm just playing games off of an sd card now but I wish someone had told me to keep all of my stuff and just work more.
The hobby died whenever people starting going to random yard sales, secondhand stores, etc to flip the games as a side hustle
It’s those who post videos going “I got this for 20 I can make 150 off of this” WTF? Like, yeah NOW you MIGHT be able to, but it’s much easier to not be a dick waffle & just let people enjoy the games instead of thinking of it as ONLY a profit.
"Thanks tWATA Games!"
Nah, bad take
People like Phoenix Resale are killing the hobby, and inspiring others to do the same for small profits
@@Bloofootful I wouldn’t exactly say “small profit” but they are misleading others into thinking EVERYONE can do the same but from my experience in working at a thrift store, that is simply not the case. Ones success doesn’t often translate to another’s. Most times they don’t understand why they aren’t selling in a similar way.
The prime example of this are the Pokémon games, millions of them have been sold because nearly every parent has at least heard about Pokémon but the prices of the DS games are now reaching €100/$100 which is ridiculous when you see that every single day there are new advertisements online for these games
They sold so many but being sold to kids means many were not taken care of and still around in good condition.
@@MrXmoda I also think Pokemon is prime nostalgia and kids won't sell or get rid of them so you have plenty of adults right now who have those copies but won't get rid of them (which is completely fair btw) I've noticed this trend when I had a reunion with my high school mates. All of them played pokemon, i'm still rather young so I grew up with FireRed, Emerald then Diamond/Pearl/Platinum/HGSS and they have all of those, they have sold or given the rest of the games away but they won't get rid of Pokemon.
Sealed Heartgold was $350 at my local game store.
@@cooleslaw9188 Sealed with the box and pokewalker? It should be, that's rare
@@themadcat5288 agreed its rare and yes it had box and walker.
The exact moment I realized something was wrong was when Luigi's mansion on 3DS came out, normally a rerelease makes the older versions cheaper since the game is now more available. I strolled into a local used game store and remembered they had Mansion for 50-60 bucks a while ago , I look out of curiosity only to see it for slightly higher. Prices where climbing for a while but that was the exact moment I knew prices weren't going down anymore. Game collecting was something I did my whole life, unlike most people I didn't sell off my ancestral collection (mostly) so it was a truly sad moment, happened to be on my birthday too.
It's depressing. I want to collect some older consoles but people over value this stuff so intensely that I'm just sticking to collecting for PS3, PS4 and PS5. Upside is I have like 150ish games across all 3.
@@FoB952 I wouldn’t collect for Switch though as Switch games are still going for around 50 to 60… but thinking about it now, in 20 years Switch games might be going for 2x or even 3x that because “reasons”.
@@jimmyjunks The only switch game I went out of my way to get was 3D all stars because of the limited time crap they pulled with it. Switch game prices never go down so I have to REALLY be interested in the game to get it. It's a glorified Pokemon machine for me.
@@FoB952 it’s aggravating because I expected a 20 dollar price drop like normally what happened with PS4 & Xbox One… but you go in & you see STILL 50 on most older titles like Zelda or Mario. If it’s a crap title yeah it’ll be cheaper like barely but I believe it all has to do with what scalpers & resellers have been doing. The only reason I never got Mario 3D All Stars was simply because it never peaked my interest. I much rather play all 3 on original hardware & I can since I own them, but if I didn’t, I might have bought it just to have it, since the originals go for insane prices.
There’s tons of RUclips channels like Chase after the right price, Phoenix resale, and others that are solely based on flipping video games. It requires a lot of work going to yard sales, flea markets, pawn shops, being on Facebook marketplace at all times, etc.
When a channel gets big enough like Chase or Phoenix, they even have secondary people working for them either part-time or full-time because their business is so big.
They were successful when game prices were rising. Now we’re at the peak of NES, SNES, and N64 and starting to descend. Soon they’ll have to rename to “Race to the Bottom” 😂
@@JTSuter lol descend? N64 prices descending? interesting.
What an amazing hobby to be disgustingly monetized. When I buy a game for my collection, I intend to actually play it, but these scalpers just spit in my face because they hate to see me have such a nice thing. It almost makes you want to buy the games digitally, because at least those versions have standardized prices.
I only buy digitally and don't collect. What made me stop collecting things is the combination of having the stuff I've collected stolen and also not wanting to be attached to material possessions. I'm really glad I decided not to. People seem miserable out there with greed taking over and ruining a once fun hobby for people. Never underestimate the freedom of not having attachments. The most important thing to me is that I can just play a fun game, and if I once had fun playing a game and I can ever play it again, so be it, because I'm having fun playing something else.
@@xenos_n. I'm doing something similar, just modding systems to play games from a hard drive or an SD card cartridge. For me, playing on the hardware is enough to suffice for me to feel that nostalgia hit without a million physical games sitting around.
I really think it's this idea of "deadstock" or "limited runs" like you said. That is huge right now in pop culture AND fashion. From sneakers to art to collectibles to video games, anything that is in limited quantities or no new copies are being made, that's highly desirable.
I completely gave up on retro games a long time ago. The only thing I got is my N64 and all the cartridges I've collected over the years. And I mostly have those for the party or social aspect.
As someone who follows prices it's been a nightmare these past few years. I don't envy anyone getting into the hobby now. Thankfully there are flashcarts and optical disk emulators available for the older systems so you can still enjoy games on original hardware
I remember when the PS2 came out you couldn’t find one fast forwarded to know an these new generation consoles you can’t find them or their charging way more than retail.
Looking at my original GameCube games I had as a kid and seeing the price of them all it’s really hard not sell it off seeing the prices they bring. But my childhood means more to me haha.
I have a copy of chibi robo and its so tempting
You are still in your childhood?
@@ganymedehedgehog371 Got it at gamestop for $12. I wouldn't because I've built my gamecube collection over the years and have every rare game except Gotcha Force and Cubivore
Im trying to collect GameCube Mario party’s. Let me tell you, I can’t find a good deal anywhere for them. I think this hobby I’ve had might have to be abandoned for good, and it’s hard because I want to enjoy these old games I used to play at friends houses again. But if I have to pay 400 for a complete CIB set of these 4 games… it’s a huge price for something like that.
For me I started a ps3 collection because I wanted to play games that I was too young to play at the time like The Darkness, Killzone, God of War, Metal Gear Solid etc. Most people are starting collections to relive their childhoods, or yes, make a quick buck. No one is sticking up for the young people who never got to experience the GameCube or the PS3 or N64, and want to play these games on original hardware for the first time.
I remember buying Pokemon Colosseum in High School, during the WiiU days, for probably less than $40. Stuff has gotten absolutely insane for no reason.
Yoo I got a complete copy for around $50 a few years ago, and I am happy I did, it’s awesome and I’m sad more people can’t experience it

I don't support Limited Run anymore just because of their behavior. I've personally experienced their poor behavior when having to deal with sending back damaged items, but also heard a lot of instances of it from others as well. I love that there are ways to get physical copies of games I love that didn't get a release, but I can't support them anymore and feel good about it.
In regards to collecting, there would have always been people contributing towards the downfall of the hobby, weather unintentionally or out of greed, so in a lot of ways this was always the way it was going to go. I think the issue is that due to the pandemic it was just advanced more quickly than anyone expected.
I don't doubt that prices will go back down someday. I mean, when our generation is gone the demand for these games will go down tremendously, just sad that we might not be there to see it.
I bought Valkyrie Profile 2 for $12 at a local game store 3 years ago . At the time I was wondering why the first game was so expensive and this one was so cheap .
The best thing for anyone just looking to play the games without coughing up the absurd prices is to look into the various ways to use Everdrives, ODE's, and hack or mod your systems to play any game you want on them. It is WELL worth the time and effort and the experience is perfect on the original hardware too. Essentially every system out there has a way to do it, from replacing your disc drive with a device to play games from an SD card Like PS1, Saturn, Dreamcast, Gamecube, or soft mods where you can pop in or USB connect a hard drive like PS2, Wii, Xbox, Wii U etc. Most ways you do it will be less than that super expensive game you want to buy. DO IT!
I'm the same way but people with the collector bug who want shelves of games on display is a bit of different market than those of us who just want to play the games. The cheapest option I've found is a hacked playstation classic which can play anything through n64 pretty much.
@@jbbrolic Definitely, I totally get that. I'm a combo of both really, I love finding great games for a deal but I won't pay the high prices. I want to play anything and everything. And I also have some nice pieces in my collection, which were cheap a long time ago or deals recently. You are right, people with deep pockets and a thirst for high ticket items will always pay what it takes to get them. It's pretty senseless but you will never convince them otherwise. At least there are better options for those that just want to game. I can't stand the thought of the simple experience of playing an old game being locked up behind a paywall of several hundred dollars.
This is really the best way to fight these inflated prices. If we keep buying at these prices they will continue to sell them at high prices.
@@cfreddykrueger9164 Great point, the market will always meet the demand so reduce the demand and the market deflates. I don't blame collectors for paying what it takes to get something they want, they are part of the issue but the bigger problem is people who find deals just to flip stuff. That drives up the prices because it is in their interest for things to be expensive so they can profit. Collectors only pay what it costs to get the games they want, and that price goes up when resellers beat them to the punch and they can't find deals. Someone wants something, and they get in their way before they can get it, then charge more. It's parasitic for sure.
I didn't know you can do this with older disc systems, does this also work on the ps1 slim or whatever or is it the original model?
If y’all wanna see the reselling/flipping at it’s worst, go check out a channel like Phoenix Resell. That is a guy who pretends that he “loves” Gamecube because it was the console of his childhood. So he makes a series where he builds a GC collection from scratch. What he doesn’t emphasize is that he a) doesn’t know jackshit about the actual games he’s buying b) is shamelessly riding the current hype train around GC c) doesn’t even plan to keep the collection (he’s stated he will sell off most of it. “It was more about the journey”).
And these channels are so lame that they will ban anyone calling them out for shady af practices. I’m talking about buying a tub of video games from a kid at a garage sale for $20 when they know for a fact there’s at least one game in there that will sell for $70. Ethics is a choice and from what I can see, resellers/flippers have no ethics.
I still have my whole PS2, Xbox 360, and PS4 collection. It’s been fun holding onto everything and trying to keep them in good condition to enjoy for years and years to come! I still play the PS2 and 360 often. It’s too expensive to start collecting nowadays because of inflation and people only collecting for money not for the love of it.

I really used to love retro game collecting it’s just not really as fun as it used to be. I’ve been collecting retro since I was 13 and I’m 29 now. My collection is something I’m proud of as well, but I’ve decided to be a lot pickier about what I buy now. I started collecting manga and graphic novels instead. Hopefully the prices will decrease but I’m not sure if that will ever happen.
I just wish people selling would do a better job adding the condition details and photos. So many ebay listings have no description or leave out huge blemishes like lots of scratches or water damage.
And a lot of sellers nowadays do a terrible job shipping games and the cases come broken. If I'm paying $100+ for a game, don't just stick it in a mailer with no bubble wrap.
Eh some of these limited run games will have a patch come out later and ruin the whole "game preservation" thing. I waited almost a year for panzer dragoon and Scott pilgrim. I bought the avgn game from them and then found out screenwave was selling them on their website. I agree with you on just buying games now for cheap and seeing what happens in the future.
I agree GameCube games specifically are absolutely insane which is why I want Nintendo to put them on switch online already it’s the perfect opportunity because they aren’t going to remaster melee or double dash so why not?
Now that I’m older I never realized how amazing the melee/double dash bundle that came with the GameCube
Can think of more titles than that like Eternal Darkness, Phantasy Star Online 1&2 and 3, Fire Emblem Path of Radiance and several others. So far only exception to my knowledge is Resident Evil 4 which is on the Switch.
Switch's CPU isn't strong enough for Gamecube emulation
My opinion - the gamecube library is better than the switch library. Sunshine is better than odyssey, double dash is better than mario kart 8, and melee is better than ultimate. Hell wind waker is better than breath of the wild.

Even before 2020, I think it was 2017-2018 when I started to realize older games were costing too much money. I used to go to a local game store back in like 2014-15 and got a ton of games for reasonable prices, three or four years later and older games cost either the same or more than a new game at this same store. I’m assuming they started to find out about the online market.
Because 2017 was the time that Wada came out with an article claiming that they sold an NES cartridge that was graded for a couple million dollars. I'm surprised no one don't remember that. The cartridge, the game that they sold that was graded for millions of dollars you can get the exact same completed non-graded game for less than $100. It's called a bubble and that's what they made and now you see old NES cartridges now being ridiculously high. You just need to do your research and find the right price.
@@blkastro7893 Artificial inflation.
I think the end goal of all game collector shouldn't be to get rare or valuable games, but to be satisfied getting all your childhood games or to get to try out new ones
I remember when I was a kid I traded my whole Gameboy advance collection for Paper Mario the Thousand Year door, how dumb I was and freaking Gamestop!
I briefly got into it back in the mid-10s. After a year, I realised the trends you mention were already starting to kick in. Eventually, I noticed every shop knew the value of it's stock, there were no 'hidden bargains', and the only cheap purchases were old sports and kids games. The joy of the process was already dying. Not sure if XBO/PS4 games will follow the trend though....this and all future generations of consoles are dependent on online connections and the value of the games will only last as long as the supporting servers remain online.
Sold my entire 360 and ps3 collection to get the ps4 and 2 games at launch. One of my biggest mistakes I've made in gaming.
I did the same thing, except for an xbox one...yikes!
Back a year or 2 ago now I was in a financial state after some family members passed away and stuff broke down at my house I had to sell off most of my collection of pokemon games. But I just couldn't bring myself to sell pokemin colosseum or xd at the was going for like 70-100 at that time. Now that I've gotten a better job and have caught stuff has slowed down I'm trying to get back to getting my collection back and it sucks! Just glad I dont need to get back the gamecube pokemon games thankfully because those prices are ridiculously high
Pretty much all collectibles have been in an intense speculative bubble the last few years. Fortunately sports cards (which seem to be the first bubble to pop) have been tanking for almost a year so hopefully the rest of the collectible markets will follow (comic books seems to have started) for those of use who are not looking at this stuff as investments.
i hope this happens for games yo 🙏🏿
I’m still hoping that my Captain Marvel card collection shoots up in price. Who wouldn’t pay top dollar for a Brie Larson card?
starting to give up on gaming and move towards wine making and foraging all my own ingredients. it's cheaper and I actually go outside!
I’ve recently been looking into buying some Gamecube game manuals I’m missing. I’ve bought a couple for a few dollars up to around $20 each but I think I’ll have to give up on some of the more rare ones. I can’t bring myself to pay upwards of $100 for a tiny book I’ll probably never even look at just to complete my collection. Gamecube collecting in general is outrageous these days.
I think the best places for game collecting without breaking the bank are flea markets and yard sales, especially if you can drum up genuine conversation with the seller(s). Still have both Zelda Oracle games CIB that I got for $10 total. Now I'm seeing each go for $300. 👀
Love hearing you talk about this. It’s a terrible time to get into collecting, but all the buzz around it is making it more and more tantalizing. I’m glad I bought most of the GameCube games I wanted 5+ years ago, but wanting to buy for PS3/3DS/DS is ramping up more and more
It's BEYOND ridiculous at this point. I honestly feel for real collectors who do it for the joy of the games, rather than for flipping. Thanks for the video.
Glad to hear someone bring up the problems with Limited Run, it's bittersweet as they cover beloved games but what they do is toxic for game collecting.
It's funny you mention getting back into retro collecting in 2020, since that's when I bowed out. I sold most of my PS3/360/Wii games when I moved to NYC in 2012, but in 2013 I broke down and bought an Xbox One and eventually Wii U, 3DS and PS4 when I moved to a larger apartment in 2014. The 3DS and Wii U reignited my love for old games so I also squeezed a Retron 5 and N64 into my entertainment center and eventually a Game Boy Advance SP and started building my cartridge collection back up. I bought games pretty regularly through 2020 and eventually hit the point where, again before a move, decided to downsize and sold the collection off to fund building a massive PC gaming rig and just emulating. For the most part, I have yet to regret that decision and with a lot of retro focused handhelds released recently and the costs of cartridges still climbing, I definitely feel I made the right call. If you're getting into retro collecting for playing the games, it's one of the most expensive times in history to do so. I'd recommend emulating for games that you can't buy on modern platforms, if you can buy retro games in a collection like the recent Cowabunga Collection, Disney Afternoon Collection, Mega Man Collections, Capcom Arcade Stadium or even Evercade cartridges, ABSOLUTELY do so as it helps reinforce to the publisher there's value in their old IP and they're more likely to release more. But if you just want to play some rarer NES or SNES titles that you'll never see re-published due to complicated IP rights, I'd suggest trying it digitally first. If you're looking to INVEST in retro games, I think you're crazy to do it right now as the market is so speculative and easily manipulated (not financial advice, just personal advice from someone who buys and sells tech on occasion).
Thank you for sharing this intro story on how you got your Xbox 360. I literally gave up half of my PlayStation 1 collection and my gameboy Pokémon games to get my first Brand new PS2 game which was the lord of the rings the two towers. As a kid I traded in so many games to GameStop & Gamecrazy which I regret till this day.
I've found myself checking pawn shops more frequently to see if they have any older games hidden away. Sometimes find gems that are worth the buy.
The problem from my perspective is essentially everything from the 8th generation and forward is "physical" in name only. Unfortunately, this includes games and consoles alike. It's difficult to get excited about collecting, when it becomes questionable if your collection will even be playable "offline" in the future. As even the console hardware themselves seem to be engineered with internal expiration dates.
Thats why I was always only PC gamer... until recently there was compatibilit... but yeah these days Intel or AMD just say this cpu no longer support older windows... deal with it.... which kinda breaks everything PC was... so I feel your pain

The worst problem is when some of these games rise, not because of any intrinsic value or rarity, but because people think they should. I remember buying the big-box version of Kid Icarus: Uprising back in 2015 for £15, and up until very recently that's how much it was still going for. But now, because more people are looking to collect 3DS games, they see a big-box and immediately assume it's rare and that idea takes over the economy. Now it's up to between £60-80.
Stuff like the GBA and other Game Boy lines has become so difficult to collect for that it has almost completely dissuaded me from starting, and I wish I had pulled the trigger when I was younger and you could still find a CIB Metroid Fusion for £30 instead of £80.
Since a lot less people collect handheld consoles than home ones, it's easy to forget that many of the most desirable DS games have no in-between. They're either dirt cheap, or way more overpriced than they should have the right to be considering over 20 million copies were sold.
I still collect vinyl, book, and Blu-rays, but I’ve given up trying to collect video games at this point. Many excellent games never get a physical release, which means my physical collection would never have everything I love in it even if I collected as much as I could.
It’s also become increasingly annoying to put in a physical disc instead of just popping the game open, especially when the game takes up the same amount of space on your system no matter what.
More power to those of you who want to keep collecting alive, though! I’ve gone for the knickknack approach these days, where my little shelf of Portal, Mario, Zelda, Fallout, etc. paraphernalia is a way for me to display my “collection.”
P.S. All of that being said, I will still 100% be buying the most deluxe version of Starfield I can get my hands on. :)
Thankfully none of the individual stores that now makeup what we know as GameStop (EB, Babbage’s, Funcoland, Software Etc.) were in southern IL in the early 90’s so I don’t have that trade whole collection moment other media people talk about, & all the consoles I bought after being given the Super Nintendo for Christmas were bought either with my own money or with money from graduation gifts (PS1 and Gamecube.)
I'm glad you mentioned Limited Run Games because I preordered the Kotor Master Edition in like November or some shit LAST YEAR and I barely got an update like 9 months later saying they should be coming in the near future, which is around October I'm assuming. So yes almost an entire year.
Yeah, there system is shit. Wouldn't be so bad if they took payment on dispatch.
I just got a message today that they finally got around to my order for KOTOR. F*cking unbelievable.
Thank you for making this video! It’s so true. Love collecting but it’s way harder to get everything you want to collect these last few years.
When I was collecting in 2008 Gamecube stuff was in short supply. I remember Game Stop selling Mario Sunshine and Metroid Prime for $2. I'm curious to know how much Gamecube stuff they tossed out or destroyed.
I don't even remember Gamecube games being in Gamestop. I was really young though.
Wow this thought makes me feel old but I remember in the late 90’s picking up earthbound, super Metroid, Donkey Kong country and a few other games at a yard sell and the seller wanted a dollar a cartridge. Things sure have changed.
You know collecting is garbage nowadays when even the cases are worth big money. I was lucky enough to find 1000 year door at a Salvation Army, but the artwork for the case was ripped. So now it sits there with a damaged case cause I don’t feel like shelling out an absurd amount of money.
It's been like this for me in New Zealand for years.
I bought Turok 2 from Limited Run when it come out.
$200 NZD (roughly $120 USD). After exchange rate, postage and customs tax.
If I want to buy a second hand Pokemon DS game, $200 without Pokewalker. $300 Plus with.
Edit: Turok 2 for Switch
Been looking forward to you talking about this …..
Prices have just skyrocketed, If it's bad in the US, imagine overseas, with dollar conversion...thank God for Game Pass because Holy sh**. You should make more videos on game collecting and prices, it's a real issue nowadays
I don't understand how Game Pass (which is unmatched when it comes to video games 'rental' at a great price) is helping physical video game collectors. Xbox is pushing for an all-digital approach with video games.
Whats the relation between collecting and game pass
@@Namistai25 maybe op meant "thank God for gamepass having some older titles that I can play for $15 a month Instead of me buying each one over market price"

I've given up collecting older games. Prices are skyrocketing and I find I spend far more time playing games from 2005 and up.
I'm the opposite currently since I got an OG xbox I've been playing all games from 2001-2004. I just honestly don't have any interest in modern gaming rather boot up my xbox, 360, ps3 that plays ps1, ps2, and ps3.
@Omega Mutant To tell ya the most modern game I've played this year was Dark pictures Little hope. So I do play them here and there but the majority of my time I'm playing older games. Just today I was playing X-men legends on the OG xbox. I just got in 50 cent bulletproof on xbox that I plan on playing next. On my Xbox one X I'm playing alan wake and not the remaster. Just nothing from this year interest me. I do want to grab a copy of fatal frame on ps4 but I think even that is a year or 2 old. Also got the Orange box so will be playing that for half-life 2 but first playing half-life 1 on ps2 and yep I have them on pc but want to play them on the console.
But I do have last gen consoles (ps4 pro, XBX) but anything on the current gens meh yea nothing interests me.
Oh God, I can't even begin to imagine how expensive a 1992 Nintendo world championship cartridge would be now let alone the gold version
I’d like to point out that the price discrepancies you are seeing in Valkyrie Profile 2 is more than likely because Square announced a new title in the series just a few months ago.
Started taking collecting serious maybe 6 years ago. Got a lot of what I wanted up until 2018-2019. I look at my collection and stuff like 50 cent blood on the sand, otogi 2, Samurai western and God hand I got all for under $20 each some even as low as 5 bucks. The markets screwed and I'm relying on remasters at this point to play the games I didn't know about line digital devil summoner.
People like Phoenix resale really screwed the market up and now when there's a hidden gems video you gotta jump on it before the prices triple
By some miracle of God, the other day I found Revelations Persona in a local game store for "only" $350. But it came COMPLETE in very good condition. That would easily go for 500+, maybe upwards of 600 in that condition. On eBay rn you'd be lucky to find that game w/o the manual for 350.
You still got scammed honestly
I remember buying Pokémon XD at a gaming convention years ago and I felt like I overpaid for it because at the time I was in high school and didn’t have a ton of money. I paid 40 bucks for it. Haven’t been back to one of those selling conventions since but I can’t imagine what kinds of offensive prices I might find.
I could’ve paid for college if I’d kept my childhood collection.
Nintendo has a lot of history and played a big part in what gaming is today. Who remembers DK in the arcade? I collect arcade games and those have gained a a premium. Especially Nintendo ones. Nostalgia also helps. Nintendo is one of the OGs of the gaming wars. NES over Genesis back in the day.
Everyone is talking about prices ALL THE FREAKING TIME. "I paid this and its worth that". "I think it's gonna skyrocket in value". "Why I'm buying XXXX in 2022 - BEFORE ITS TOO LATE". The fact that you and other people are paying 150$ for a Gamecube game and justify it by saying it's a good price, only to make a video about how awful the market is right now, is kinda ironic. And it's also the reason why this is gonna keep going until you decide it's not worth it anymore. In the meantime, I'll enjoy my Everdrives.
Covid & Re-sellers are what has ruined genuine game collecting for those that just want to enjoy the games, not for ego or profit but obtaining good games well worth playing. I collect strategy guides as well & recently had to pay $70 plus shipping for a "Red Dead Revolver" strategy guide, which I bought with the game at launch for $15 but gave it to a buddy who wanted to go through the game, everything is getting crazy with prices. Don't even get me started with "Limit the Run Games", many I refuse to buy at these blown up prices now.
I remember I made the same mistake of trading most of childhood games back then for something newer. Thankfully when I started to rebuild and expand my retro collection it was around 2010-2015 so a good amount of games were dirt cheap. Some notable examples are when I bought Pokémon XD for $27, Conker's bad fur day for $20 and Mystical Ninja Starting Goemon for $24 all of these can be well over $100 now.
Me and my brother have been collecting GC games for a while now and it's very depressing trying to buy these games for hundreds of dollars.
@Omega Mutant yes cause new games are so fun and full of content that they need to be patched post release to ever be playable and any high amount of content comes with dlc which is an easy 40+ right their. Just because its not the newest thing in the world doesn't mean it all of a sudden becomes the most boring thing in the fucking world, it literally makes zero sense, oh this thing is old now, guess it can't be fun
@Omega Mutant bruh, quit making assumptions that every fucking game is 60+, most of the og Xbox library was and is dirt cheap and a good amount of 360 as well. If it's so fun then where's the sequel, you do realize that sequels come from a need to finish a story, a large desire or profit right, just because something is fun doesn't mean it sold well and many games out their even modern ones can't do well with a sequel, also what about all these reboots and remasters which usually end up worse than the original release like 3d All-stars. I could easily buy a halo 2/3 and have a much better time than 4 or 5, I could buy medal of honor airborne allied assault and airborne and have a much better time than cod vanguard or cold war. Need for speed hot pursuit is already a much better game than any recent NFS. Pokemon black and white and xd Gale of darkness provides much more entertainment than sword/shield and US/UM. The last good fifa and Madden games came from the early 2000s and 2010s, Mario strikers charged is much better than it's new title released a couple months ago. Sega and sonic all stars racing is still a great arcade esc game better than Mario kart 8 or TSR. The last of us is much better than the last of us two. Monster jam maximum destruction is the best monster jam game out their and that was for the Wii. Battlefield 3/4, bad company, 1942 and even hardline provided better entertainment than battlefield 5 and 2042. Final fantasy 7 is still considered one of the best final fantasies out their and I'm talking about the original not the "remake".the Dragonball Budokai Tenkaichi games were considered some of the best DB fighting games all the way until fighterz dropped and even then XenoVerse 1 and 2 are still bad. Street fighter 2 was so successful it had multiple different releases and street fighter 3 can even be considered an end of an era. Sonic unleashed and sonic generations are still considered much better than forces and mania is out on par with sonic 2 and 3 which are from the 90s. At this point I don't think I have to continue this demonstration.
@Omega Mutant remember you asked for examples, I gave examples, so don't bitch about the reading unless your considering dropping this conversation. After all I can't help the fact that there's alot to disprove your point.
I started collecting for the Dreamcast back in 2018 since I'm a huge Sega fan and had to stop because the prices have gotten too high. I really hate what's going on.
I still collect for Xbox consoles like the OG Xbox and 360 though. There's some games that blew up on those but most of them have stayed the same and multiplats are usually much cheaper. Overall I just wish prices would go down so other fans that want to own these games to play on original hardware would get a chance.
As soon as the mom and pops and smaller chains started charging the outlandish prices that's when it got less fun and became a struggle for me.
And I am trying to buy back my old Nintendo GameCube collection, and I'm kind of thankful that I kept most of my other stuff.
I was a big retro game collector back in 2010, and found a new found love for Sega and Nintendo games that I missed out playing back in the day. Back in the day I played way to much NHL hockey for Genesis, so I missed out on so many amazing games. These days its way to expensive! Great video and channel!
Thank you for being rational with your critiques. Some youtubers that complain about it barely understand the most basic principles of economics and it shows. Also, thank you for not making moral statements or judgements; you just stated facts. Great video.
If you ate searching for a specific title to add yo your collection, yes it's very expensive. But if you build your collection a little more naturally on what you find in ghe "wild" it is not as difficult. I just bought pokemon Coliseum from a garage sale for $2!
idk to me i think the small businesses get hurt the most. i recently got really into retro collecting and found a store nearby. i’ve gotten pretty close with him and we were talking about game cubes and he started telling me how much it’s hurting to have to pay people $60, $70, $80 for these game cube games. because years ago you never did that. you’d never get that much for a game you sold to a place. and now they have to fork over all this money to mainly people who just flip games for a profit. and it’s like i get the hustle but it’s at a point where it’s getting to be a problem. i just hope this all turns around soon.
He needs to realize $35 in 1995 is equal to $60 now. It like old guys talking about soda used to cost a nickel. Also the flip side is he is also selling those games for nearly double what he paid. He will be fine as long as there are 30 year olds wanting to relive their childhood.
Great video topic this is why video game preservation needs to be around I had so many game cube games that now costs hundreds of pounds like Mario party 7 which is a ridiculous price I wish I never sold them in hindsight.
Thank god im not interested in older gens, prices are crazy. Started actively collecting in 2019 for Xbox 360, games that i missed. Games that are console only, i previously had, want to replay for achives, delisted from stores and other platforms. So far bought 30 at average of 10e , maybe have 10 to 20 left that interests me. Total 80 on disc and 10 arcade titles. Resellers suck, that's why i try to get my games from people with less listings as possible.
I really hope the retro gaming bubble pops soon so I can get some gamecube games without spending over 100$ 🙃
This is why I want GameCube switch online
I fear it never will. After buying these old games for such high prices no one’s gonna wanna give them up for way less
It wont ever people know what they have and same I know condition of a sealed gamecube game
I think it's an endless cycle, I'm like you and want to get my old collection that I sold off years ago. Problem is that the prices are so high that I can't justify paying for stuff, this makes me go out and look for people who don't know the value of things they have. I buy on Facebook for cheap and sell high to trade in stores or ebay so that I have the money to get the games I want. I'm contributing to this highly inflated market by selling games high but if I didn't do that then I wouldn't have the games I want. It's frustrating!
It’s awful constantly seems like I’m behind the times too. Went hard in the paint for snes and nes in 2014-2017. Now I’m goin ps1 and it’s similar pricing to what the previous ones were. Cib market gone absolutely insane too
Limited Run are scummy. Their business model is actually terrible and they DEFINITELY are aware that they’re pumping the reselling market and are happy to do so.
Their shipping times might be subpar, but they are a great company. They've provided so many great games over the years that wouldn't exist otherwise. And still more to come. Love them.
Hearing this makes me happy that I'm not a collector. ROMs are far easier to find than the out of production games.
Yaa, there's alot of people who don't have $200 to spend on a 15+ year-old game
Flash carts are dope 💪 they’ve prevented me from even being tempted from a lot of big purchases
At some point roms will be the only way to play these games. I'm not saying go for it but I'm not going to pay some turd thousands of dollars for a game that I just want to play.
I'm so glad I'm down to one last game on my collection list. Granted it's pricy but i know it can be found. I can't imagine having to start at the beginning. It's nuts
What game, theirs dozens out their I'm interested in mostly became of their unique or rare properties
i collect games very loosely, im not set on buying entire libraries but rather games/consoles/memorabilia that interest me
my dad got me an n64 and a gamecube in 2007-2008 when I was 5, this was because I assume it was right after the two were falling out of popularity and right before they really started to hike up in price. I still have both consoles and just yesterday I had to pay $65 for an Authentic copy of Majoras Mask, which is a game I've been seeking for myself for 10 YEARS, and $65 was a good price! I always see it for $70-$90
I honestly don't believe things will lessen up really, not unless some huge stockpile of games gets unleashed in the wild and equalizes all the prices.
I think seeing retro videogame trade as investment is just downright silly. Their value is just too low compared to stock, real state, or any real investment, and there are not enough items out there to accumulate a meaningful large value.
If you are doing this, please just stop, it's dumb, and it ruins the fun for others.
You RUclipsrs are part of the problem as well. What do you expect when y’all start calling everything a “hidden gem” or going for full collections? It’s going to spike up the prices. RUclipsrs like MetalJesus and MrWrightWay are guilty of this, buying everything just for the sake of buying and calling everything a “hidden gem”.
Yup, the other day i saw a couple at game stop looking at games and comparing prices online. I hope this trend dies out soon.
I was recently looking at buying another copy of heartgold with the box and pokewalker, since I lost mine as a child, and they're going for around $200, which is kinda crazy to me
Even just the PokeWalker is going for around $60 or more, ugh. I'm so salty losing my SoulSilver AND the PokeWalker! Luckily, I bought another copy secondhand for $55 at a GameStop and said PokeWalker from eBay, so it kinda filled the void, at least, but still.
I'm a Amazon seller. It's really tough competition. Some corporations sell so low or the independent sellers sell extremely high. There is no profit selling some game because you have some seller selling games on Amazon fro like a dollar. I would literally lose money selling that because of shipping. Amazon refunds you less money than it cost to ship via USPS. Some game are priced so high. I put my product cheaper and it sells alot faster. I try to make my prices fair to me and my customers.
It’s been awful for years. Long live the digital revolution where we are no longer beholden to slimy resellers, lame af flippers, and would be speculators.
Long live the digital age where no content is yours even after paying and the necessity for hard drives is through the roof as well as limited time releases that will never be able to be bought later
Also praise emulation! I'm not paying $70 for an old af game that Nintendo aren't selling anymore.
@@dragonmaster3030 What the fuck good is a TurboGraphix-16 Hue card with my 4K tv with HDMI only inputs? Or a copy of Earthbound with it’s dry ass battery that needs soldering? And honestly, this whole “you don’t own games when you buy them digitally” is so played. I have games that I “bought” digitally over 15 years ago via the Xbox market place and PS store that download and play just fine on my Series X/PS5.
And even if they don’t, I’ll just find another way to play them. The problem with how you’re thinking about games is that it’s too rigid. I live in a world where every game is available to me, regardless if it’s on my shelf or not. I’ll buy a copy of Driver: San Francisco off eBay because it will play nicely with the Series X, but if it doesn’t? I go elsewhere. I’m sure af not having 5 generations of gaming consoles hooked up to my system just so I can play on “the real thing”.
