Dan I need your opinion. I put a sub mini 1.5 amp toggle switch in my SSS Strat to get 2 more sounds Should I have used a minimum I toggle switch with a 3amp rating? I can't find info on this anywhere.
Massive kudos on the editing. Great lead in to Max's demo of the strat. Cool guitar too. You must have put a ton of time into this video. For what it's worth, your time and effort was well spent. Excellent video.
Thanks for the feedback. This was a work in progress since last December. Finding time to work on a collaboration video while still trying to keep up with regular content was a challenge. But I enjoyed it, I plan to do more!
Wow, that is one awesome guitar that actually lives up the the name "Super Strat!" Great sound, look, and flexibility. Big thanks to Guitar MAX for demonstrating what that guitar can do. I'm looking forward to detailed instructions and specs for your incredible guitar. This is a guitar that I really want to build. Amazing you were able to do it for under $250.
"Whenever you're handling fire, you need to use extreme caution. If you're a child, make sure you're doing this under adult supervision. If you're an adult, make sure you ACT LIKE ONE." God, i love this channel
I live in Shanghai so these kits cost almost nothing but I dont have a clue how to assemble it. I no absolutely nothing about electronics and have no tools. Really sad actually Im sitting in the biggest gold mine without a refinery
Benito Faggotini Dan has some good videos to get you started, then I'd suggest watching a bunch of videos created by Ben Crowe over at Crimson Guitars. He's a master luthier (guitar builder) and he has a ton of excellent in depth videos on building guitars. The secret is to pull the relevant parts from each video. Dan has great vids on which tools you actually need (surprisingly few) and Ben covers everything in great depth. Hopefully that'll help you get started! I haven't built a guitar yet but I'm planning to go nuts and build a crazy PRS custom style design! xD
Learn 😂 the kits are cheap, you have some leeway to make mistakes. Buy some tools from Harbour Freight and a cheap kit and get you a guitar built, you can do it!
What also works when installing the floyd posts, pour hot water in each hole for about 10 seconds. Dump it out, it will swell the wood long enough to tap in the posts. The wood is dried enough that it will dry out in no time.
Hey man, loved the video. In fact I loved it so much that I purchased everything to do an exact build as described in your video. I plan on converting an old Squier Strat that I've had since High School into a beautiful sounding and playing guitar. I just don't play enough to justify spending a 1000+ on a nice guitar. I'm going with a satin black wood finish, the cf pickguard and all gold hardware, I'd love to show you how it turns out in the end if you'd be interested. Anyway, I'm quite well versed when it comes to soldering and wiring (I did this as a profession for a period of time), however I'm pretty new when it comes to wiring guitar electronics and understanding the nomenclatures. I was wondering if by any chance you had created a wiring diagram when you wired this guitar up, and if so would you ever consider sharing it. Great video as always, I look forward to the next one.
We love you Dan but having others play your guitars is pretty damn awesome 😂 Of course you don't have to do it every time but if you make other crazy guitars like this maybe it's worth it
This isn't NEARLY the first time I've watched this video. I STILL "giggle like a school girl" at the expression on Max's face when he catches the guitar. And, you're right, Max is pretty awesome at Heavy Metal and I don't care for the genre, but I can watch him play for a good long while. Great video, Dan, and Superb editing. As soon as I figure out how to find my PayPal account # I will become a patron. Keep up the fantastically informative and entertaining posts. As always, I would like to thank Spell Check for allowing me to utilize multi-syllable words!!! Peace.
Do you have wiring diagram for this? I want to a similar thing with my own project and having a tough time finding diagrams and information on how to do it. I want to run coil splits with the option of picking which coil is being used, reverse phase on a 2 way switch, and stereo output. Any thoughts/resources?
Dude just a tip for you. Never use an impact driver to drive screws into wood, it just makes it easier to crack the wood. I think we have all seen an impact driver push a screw so far into wood that it either cracks the wood or snaps the head of the screw off and that is enough of a reason to not use them. The best thing I have found personally is hand drill set at the little screw driver mark on the collar (lowest setting) and just chucking a bit into the Jacob's chuck. The thing will stop screwing on its own and will go no further even if you try to drive it further. You have to jack up the setting to around 18 to screw it up. Impact drivers generally max out at well over 100 ft lbs, that is a ton of torque and no guitar in the world has screws put in at 100 ft lbs unless someone messed with it and got heavy handed with a screw driver or impact driver. Cool guitar, they dye looks like Rit and honestly I have used Rit dye as well with excellent results. The secret to it is to let it fully dry then sand. The reason you want it to fully dry is because the dye has salt crystals in it and when you go to sand it gives the sunburst effect and also gets rid of the salt. After you do that don't wipe it with solvents (acetone, paint thinner ect) you will want a very diluted alcohol (like around 20% alcohol 80% water). This allows the water to melt any remaining crystals but increases the drying time of the water to around a day. Then lacquer it and boom excellent finish. I see a lot of people try the Rit dye out and get mad when it doesn't dye nearly as well as what you expect. the way mentioned about just lets it saturate into the wood and you just keep applying coats until you are satisfied with the depth of the color. I have a strat I did it to (cheap bullet by squire that I built a ash body for) and I was also a little upset, but then I stuck with it and kept applying (black and red sunburst was what I was trying to do) and when I saw I got the black so dark I assumed it was the effect everyone was looking for. I think I will do a video tutorial on it just to explain it better. Keep up the work, you are learning and while there is a few mistakes here and there I can see you are getting better at it and it won't be long before you look at things like building up wood on a neck to make a Floyd Rose nut shelf as being no big deal and not a big job.
That came out looking like a way more expensive guitar. Good job! Interesting idea with the wire and blowtorch. I'll have to catalog it away for future use, along with the thousand other things I need to try out ;)
J. IV Guitar I've seen a few people do a similar trick and it's also turned out nice. Ben over at Crimson Guitars did something similar with a maple neck, except he used an oxy acetylene torch for the job since it gets way hotter. The point is to caramelize the sugars and drive out as much moisture as possible while doing this without actually setting the guitar on fire lol. Anyway, Dan's idea of wrapping wire and faux tiger striping is a very interesting twist on the concept :)
If I disagree with something that someone says in there video, does that make me a troll? I hope not. Anyway, it is my belief that sustain is contributed to more by the neck to body joint and not the neck plate to body joint. As long as your screws are tightened properly your sustain will not be affected with or without the plastic protector. The important thing is that the neck is as tight to the body as can be. I have them with and without. I never have a problem with neck tightness and if there is a difference in sustain, a K-9 couldn’t hear it. Again, this is my belief based on what I have in my collection. If nobody agrees, that’s cool. Just thought I’d share my thoughts. Your videos are great and very informative. I’m glad I subscribed. I think my favorite so far is your makeover of the Schecter PT Fastback II. That came out insane. I’d love to give something like that a try. Cheers.
Excellent build and great demo by max. Very entertaining. It was really good that max demoed both pickups and his shredding verified that the guitar was set up very well. The carbon fiber pickguard is very unique. Personally, I would've used chrome covered pups to match the rest of the hardware .But that's just my preference.
I was looking for chrome but couldn’t find a good deal on them to keep it under budget. Honest I was hoping to paint the zebras to match the body, but realized I couldn’t separate them from the pickup without ruining it. Oh well. It still looks really cool, just not how I hoped.
What a great idea to use the guitar build as a platform to evaluate all of these tone and wiring possibilities! Genius move Dan. I just subscribed - I am a more senior member (age-wise), but both Guns and Guitars are subjects near and dear to my heart. You have a great way of expressing yourself. Keep up the strong work!
How to install a Floyd Rose in a Strat: Don't. Or pay someone else to. Also, as regards to 42 tone options: While it's nice to have that, how many of them will actually ever get used? It's been nearly 2 years, so an update on that would be interesting to see.

Ok, 1 Last post before bed.....I am becoming addicted to your channel AS THIS IS MY 3RD POST ON YOUR VIDEOS TODAY!!! I found you by watching a video on Max's Channel!!! Wanting to get a LP Style Kit, never doing a finish on a Guitar and wondering how in the world I was going to create a BURST finish, watching you use DYE instead of a Stain, then mixing in different Stain Colors to try to get it right.....Your Dye Technique is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!!!! Now I know, when I decide to purchase a Flying V Style Guitar, I know what Red Color Dye to use since I'm wanting to make the ENTIRE V the Vintage Red Mahogany finish much like KK Downing's 1960's V, formally of Judas Priest!!! I always wanted a version of his Vintage V. Thanks to you.....I know I can do it!!! Dan, I keep finding out we are a LOT alike! I am all about guns, guitars, DIY, dad jokes, and mountain bikes. I actually have some really cool mountain bike content coming up. Where are you from? Maybe we can get a ride in sometime!
I’m in Prescott, AZ. One of the best towns to live in for mountain biking. Let me know if you ever swing thru and I’ll show you the ropes on our trail systems.
Ah cool, I won't be out that way until next season. I am doing the east coast this season, just trying to get my van build done. As soon as I build that and a rickenbacker kit I'll finish off the rest of the east coast. Maybe I'll swing your way for the winter?
Do you even 360 no scope a .308 whilst biking down steep dirt hills wielding double neck (super) stratocasters playing the solo to, "tornado of souls" by Megadeth?
Brett Johnson just swap necks :]. u can get a cheap knock off neck and just crown and level it if needed and put in new tuners and a new nut and ur probably good
The Author tried that already....found a 1996 Fender Mexican Strat at a garage sale for $100 with hard case. Flipped nut and strings and it plays fine sounds good. However periodically while playing will my strumming hand with hit the volume and turn it down. Also have to use a cable with a right angle end or strumming hand hits it. And the worst part is it’s almost impossible to play above the 15ish fret as it isn’t cut out for that. Would cut it to work but the guitar is in mint condition and don’t want to ruin it. As for now it’s a great rthym guitar
Best crossover ever!! Two of my favourite channels together! I was actualy already subscribed to both for a long time when stumbled upon this video... And loved it!!😀👏
Router Drill Dremel Screwdrivers Saws These are tools that were once commonly owned by regular people. The parts for guitars are going to add up a lot faster than building a guitar. Obviously you don't need to buy a laser cutter for a single pickguard; unless you plan on making many of them. The same could be said for a lot of specialized tools, but with the basic tools listed above, lots of work can be done.
I can't wait for your trem guide! I've had a kit for a while and bought a Gotoh floyd for it a while ago. I've been procrastinating but if you do that video I'll definitely try it.
I second that. How about a flying - V with a combination of P and Jazz Pickups with phase switch? Or maybe a flying - V fretless with the above configuration?
Dan...I love your videos! I'm on a budget and love to try and get the best for as little cost as possible. This Strat build was awesome! I don't play metal and don't like Floyd Rose tremelos, but I loved seeing you build this guitar! It's really a nice guitar for someone into that kind of music and I appreciate all styles. I have what may seem like a dumb question about the zebra pickups. I just installed a set on a Les Paul copy. I've seen them in all kinds of configurations color wise. Sometimes cream on top. Sometimes on the bottom. Some I've seen where the cream faces inward on both. That's how I did mine. Does it matter which way you install them if you're not doing a coil split? Thanks for any help!👍😎🎸🎶
I was looking forward to this video and it was even better than expected with the guest appearance. I am not a super strat fan but that one is beautiful. The finish, the pickguard, and zebra pickups, its all awesome.
Great build. I think I like this one the best of all the guitars you have built. And you have built some beautiful guitars. Good job on the collaboration with Guitar Max. Keep up the great work!
Im in love with that guitar, i am defentely gonna try to build a replica, btw thank you for including the webside where you bought it. Its the best one i have found yet with really nice guitarbodies.

lol, I usually enjoy your playing, but this time... :) Enjoyed the striping trick. Also gotta give Rit Dye a try some day...
Awesome guitar and Max jamming on it. Great video man!
Its a studio special for sure. It would be neat to record a whole album with just this guitar and all its tones.
peeps! i got 2 used squire strats from my local musicgoround for under $150 for the pair. the used market got some deals...
musicgoround has some legit deals. mine has a rack of 30 dollar knockoff strats to dual recs. Got a bugera 333xl there for 300, not bad price.
Not when you’re left handed:(
Brett Johnson just swap necks :]. u can get a cheap knock off neck and just crown and level it if needed and put in new tuners and a new nut and ur probably good
Hell, you might be able to get away with flipping the nut/strings, if you’re really desperate.
And loved it!!😀👏
If you buy all those tools, time, work.... That means like $ 1000... So it's better to just buy one finished guitar.
True, but after buying the tools I suppose you can build more guitars in the future for a great price rather than paying used or full retail.
Router
Drill
Dremel
Screwdrivers
Saws
These are tools that were once commonly owned by regular people. The parts for guitars are going to add up a lot faster than building a guitar. Obviously you don't need to buy a laser cutter for a single pickguard; unless you plan on making many of them. The same could be said for a lot of specialized tools, but with the basic tools listed above, lots of work can be done.
Max is KILLER! Nice job on the strat build. 🤘
nobody:
search bar on 12:18 : wish I was cool like Dan
I laughed when I saw this pop up on my notifications because I am subbed already to Max's channel also. Great build and great demo!
I can't wait for your trem guide! I've had a kit for a while and bought a Gotoh floyd for it a while ago. I've been procrastinating but if you do that video I'll definitely try it.
42 tone options!! you really a genius sir! keep doin what you doin now and keep rockin!!
Really nice build! I was wondering if you can a find an make a flying V shaped bass or maybe an explorer shaped guitar? Anyway thank you
I second that.
How about a flying - V with a combination of P and Jazz Pickups with phase switch?
Or maybe a flying - V fretless with the above configuration?
David Trevi great idea!
Whomstbethisboo bargain musician has a 7 string V kit, that would be sick to see!
If you think about it Dan, you can get even more tones when you ride the tone and volume. So the possibilities are almost endless!
That thing is beyond sick dude, amazing work.
74dart man it doesn't matter if you aren't doing a coil split
It technically doesn’t matter, but people typically put the screw head poles on the outside and the flat poles on the inside. Not sure why though.
Dan... I don't really think you have to play, "...that kind of music...". :)
Guns and Guitars ok...thanks a lot!👍😎🎸🎶
Woofy Stevenson Thanks!☺
I was looking forward to this video and it was even better than expected with the guest appearance. I am not a super strat fan but that one is beautiful. The finish, the pickguard, and zebra pickups, its all awesome.
Thanks!
Kits $160 plus $74 shipping now 😂😂😂
OK, so I followed you from your RV channel to here and realized I have watched a couple of your builds in the past. Great work, Dan.
Hey Dan.
I've seen that there are different kinds of Tung Oil on Amazon and i don't know which one to buy. Do you have any recommendations?
I prefer formbys, low gloss finish.
Didn't even watch the whole video and saw that your channel name is Guns and Guitars, you earned my sub sir
That was too much metal for my phone. It caused my phone to catch fire and explode. Satan approved.
Haha. Best comment I’ve read so far
Great build. I think I like this one the best of all the guitars you have built. And you have built some beautiful guitars. Good job on the collaboration with Guitar Max. Keep up the great work!
Do the headless guitar build on Bargain Musician! Or maybe the Iceman style bass kit?
Fantastic build. I have to step up my wiring game. Nice job.
Yeah, everyone I know has all of these tools.
Nice work! Really enjoyed Max shredding on your axe
Time to make another rivers cuomo strat
Pretty sure this is my fav video of yours so far. Can't wait to see the how-tos for this set up
Saw Max with your guitar and subscribed! Thanks and I will be watching a bunch more.
Thanks for your sub!!
LOL. Awesome calling out GFS! Amazing job on the build as always. love your vids. Keep up the great service for all of us builders!
Nice twist! Both channels have started to find their groove and this is a unique collaboration.
I like how both of these guys are into getting the most from value gear. Value gear is great.
Im in love with that guitar, i am defentely gonna try to build a replica, btw thank you for including the webside where you bought it. Its the best one i have found yet with really nice guitarbodies.
