I can hardly wait for September even though it will make me older. I'm already planning my fall garden, looking forward to starting my plants for transplanting. The collards, cabbage, broccoli, leeks and onions. If something doesn't happen to kill off my winter squash vines I'm going to have a good harvest and didn't have one vine borer this year. Poke fun if you like but I prayed over the pumpkins and God answered my prayer. Every year I have fought the borers but not one vine has been damaged, don't even try to tell me it wasn't God, because I can't be convinced. I saw one borer moth right at the beginning flowers and I swatted her away and haven't seen another. I recognize them immediately when I see them. I haven't sprayed anything on them. I planted some acorn squash and it already has mildew so I'm wishing I hadn't planted it along side my Seminole and Cherokee tan witch has gone crazy and taken over the garden, only three plants and I've lost count of the pumpkins on them.
The Old Goat is behind the Cluck Chicken. Due to health issues I have switched to Hydroponic Gardening. Really miss digging in the dirt. I am going to run my tractor tiller and broadcast me some Top Pick Pink Eye Purple Hull Peas and roll them in. Love them.
I live in Southeastern Kentucky-zone 6, and I did Ambrosia sweet corn this year and it was just a strange year here. Very cold spring compared to average, we had a frost in the first week of May, which I don't every remember happening in my 45 years of life. Usually our last frost is done by the first week of April or so. So far all the months of April, May June and July, to this point, have been cooler than average. Not just cool, but also a lot of rain and cloudy days, it's been this way for the last 3 or 4 springs and summers, but this year has been worse, causing us to be very late on everything. Sometimes it feels like the calendar is flipping and we're trading spots with all the seasons. I planted a bunch of rows of Ambrosia sweet corn on the 8th of May, and then a few more rows about 4 weeks later as my late season corn. My early corn grew much slower and took forever to tassel and pop out silks, but the funny thing is, my late season corn grew like weeds and had early tassels peaking out just a few days after my silks came out in the early corn. I'm looking out the window at my corn right now and I'm waiting for my silks to brown and dry completely on my early corn to harvest, yet my late corn planted three weeks later has tassels spread out and silks peaking and pollinating as we speak lol. Our early season stuff like cabbage, lettuce and carrots did very well this year and loved the cool rainy weather. My squash plants, of several different verities, did very good with plants and leaves as big as I've ever seen. My sweet potatoes are thriving and peppers of several different verities are thriving, and my tomatoe plants are huge. I did 4 different heirloom tomatoes, Kellogg's Breakfast, Mortgage Lifters, Hillbilly Potato Leaf, and Gold Medals, I also did some Super Sweet 100 cherries and some Better Boys and Supersonics. All and all, everything is loving the coller then average, and cloudy, rainy weather, which makes me now understand why people who live in the Pacific Northwest, or mid Northwest, or Atlantic Northeast, always have huge thriving gardens and just don't understand the struggles of us who plant in the South and are forced to battle the heat and humidity lol.
Am in the inland PNW, we battle the heat, but no humidity. In this location, we only get about 8 inches of rain per year. Irrigation systems are started in early May and run through September. July and August temperatures run at or near 100 degrees or better almost daily.
You two are the cutest couple and very funny. Sheila I like your hair tonight, very pretty. I am learning a lot from watching your videos. I will have to re-watch many of them for sure but that is okay I am a slow learner about gardening. Thank you for sharing . love your guys! I am in Texas, zone 7. it has been super hot this year! I will plant in (containers) a fall garden.
Zone 8, Florida Panhandle here: fall gardening is my jam. 👩🌾. I’m excited. Old Goat peeking out from behind the cluck chicken. Great information on the show tonight. 👏
Mr. Old goat is peeking over from behind the chicken. I was just starting to plan my fall garden today. Can't wait for the kale, collards, and spinach 😊😊
Appreciate what your sharing. I'm in zone 5b and experimenting with planting some sweet corn but have it started now. Who knows it may work lol With high temps and everything going on I'm trying a lot of different things this year. It's unpredictable how soon it will get cold this year so taking things as they come. I'm growing a lot in containers (not corn) and some things can be moved in greenhouse or downstairs with other plants growing under lights. Like I said trying lots of different things this year. I like those growing trays. Hopefully I can get some before their gone. The peas sound good. Your giving me lots of ideas of what to order when I can. I'm so glad I heard about you all from Danny and Wanda at Deep South Homestead. I hope to watch a lot more what your sharing when I can. I wish could go to the event but quite a distance from me. Sounds very exciting and something to enjoy with what will be going on and shared.
Your video is exactly what's been on my mind. Thanks for the tips and time frames for planting. All this FL rain and bugs are about to make me lose my mind! I'm ready to rip every thing up and start anew! The old goat is behing the cluck chicken!
Looking forward to fall gardening here in Florida zone 9b. Too blasted hot to do much right now. 🙂 I see the Old Goat over Mama Hoss' shoulder behind the chicken 'cluck'.
Man Mr. Hoss she threw you under the bus and then back back over you on your diet. Don't worry mine is the same way.😂 the old goat is behind the chicken beside Miss. Hoss . I look forward to this every week love you guys
Love that new gardening spot you all are building! Best video! Hope I get to do a big fall garden! Love greens! And they sell like you would not believe! Thanks so much! Marlene a Farmer from SC!
Build a cold frame ! Use old windows to cover! Open and close to keep it from getting damaged! I'm going to try to build one! Thanks so much! Love the videos!
I'm in Indiana zone 6 I can plant sweet corn up until July 15th and get a nice harvest . I planted my last crop this year July 10th . My late plantings mature faster than my Spring plantings . Thanks for sharing !
The old goat is over Sheila's left shoulder behind the cluck sign. I think when I pull my cucumbers I am going to plant some radishes and maybe some spinach.
If a person just wants a dozen or so ears of sweet corn for a treat, plant it in a few buckets. I'd stick with 2 plants per 5-gallon pail. Bigger container, put a couple more plants in it. Keep the containers all close together so they pollinate well.
I love the fall garden, and I'm excited to start fresh. We're still getting loads of tomatoes, cucs, and peppers. Cleveland TN Zone 7b. Old goat is behind the CLUCK! Thanks, y'all.
I'm in zone 5 or 6. I plan on doing Pak Choy. Short growing duration like 30 days??, and yummy. My tomato indeterminates survive till frost. Mortgage Lifter never stops, or cherries, or grape tomatoes. Got some backup sunflowers, pickles planted. Okra will do well until the frost. I have rosemary until like February. I should bring it in for 2 months. It's such a survivor.
I'm doing a winter garden challenge over here in Maine zone 5a! I'm always jealous of you all that can grow year 'round but never jealous of the poisonous snakes and spiders ! I have a high tunnel as well as row covers so in addition to the fall garden, I'll be trying to do succession planting of carrots, beets, radishes, lettuce, spinach, kale, and mustard. Wish me luck!
Shelia, first off, that shade of blue is YOUR color!!! Old goat is behind the 'cluck' chicken. Gonna get a few things started here in Zone 9a (Florida), gonna cut back some for fall but our over winter stuff will be full steam ahead.
I grew the Sungold Dwarf Sunflower and oh my they are gorgeous! They reminded me of a teddy bear too….don’t know why. I love my fall garden in Texas! Surprisingly I’ve got some baby cabbage doing ok under shade cloth…I’m hopeful!
OMG! Zone 6b is popping off the hook! Our corn is silking, our tomatoes are getting nice and juicy, our Hansel eggplants, lettuce, zukes, cukes and summer squash are plentiful, and our collards and swiss chard...!!!! ❤❤❤❤ PS - Ole goat is lounging behind 'cluck'!! We love y'all!!
The Old Goat is currently going Cluck behind Mama Hoss :) This fall I've got more Red Snapper tomatoes started, I'll be doing your Vidalia onions, peppers still growing strong, lots of mustard greens, cabbages and lettuces. Possibly some fall corn and more rattlesnake beans.
Verbena, AL. Zone 8a, according to USDA plant hardiness zones. Other sites say I'm in 8b. Confusing. I'm planting Silver King corn, radishes, beets, rutabagas, Blue Lake green beans, Lady peas, baby limas, onions, Brussels sprouts, collards and kale. I'm getting anxious! Good luck to you guys, with your fall planting! 🙏🏻❤️
BG ky 6b, crappie fishin 3 day a week cause it’s goooood fir me!! Gardening too, be turnin in some cover crop here in about 3-4 weeks, buckwheat, iron clay peas, plantin them Florida broad leaf, row of collards, purple top turnips, radishes and the rest of the garden will go in winter rye. None of the leafy green will survive the freezes, as collards will be the last to go. Will direct sow everything except collards but most important fall activity that runs all the way until end of spring is to go fishin cause it goooood fur ya!!!!! Right now fixin to gather all these Hossinator, R Snapper, and Roadster maters, I mean a dang bunch of um too. Big as softballs , freeze and canning comin up. Us gardener kinda like these gray squirrels , metaphorically, speaking, around here, they like ya gather up them nuts for the winter! Thank ya good folks for keepin this ole reckneck informed!!
I AM PLANNING MY FALL GARDEN IN ZONE 9B WEST CENTRAL, FLORIDA. FALL IS THE BEST TO GARDEN HERE IN FLORIDA TOMATOES MAY BE SLOW BUT THEY FRUIT WITH LITTLE DISEASE, I CAN DO MY KALES, LETTUCES AND CILANTRO WITHOUT THEM BOLTING BECAUSE OF THE HEAT AND HUMIDITY. I ALSO LOVE TO DO PEPPERS THEY DO REAL WELL HERE. I AM EXCITED JUST THINKING ABOUT PLANTING MY GARDEN.
Thank y'all. With the heat we've been having here in the deep south Louisiana wish we were closer to fall. Mr old goat is behind Ms Hoss behind the chicken. Enjoy those fall gardens the best. Wishing y'all a blessed day.
I replant my plots all summer. I'm doing more carrots, beets, green beans, buckwheat and I'll be sowing some oats and winter wheat to over winter. I'm zone 7 (S. TN). The Old Goat is peeking out from behind the "cluck" chicken.
Well the Old Goat is "clucking" along this week in the heat of summer. He's on the shelf behind Mama Hoss. We still have some heat tolerant determinate tomatoes producing, the peppers are still doing well, and the beans were until the deer found them this week. Evangeline sweet potatoes are doing great as are our "Sweetness" corn plots (2 small plantings to space harvest out - and YES it's in raised beds, and that's all we have like Mama Hoss said... zone 8A). I'm considering a fall garden this year. Like you said, this is the planning time to figure out what I want to plant, and where, and what needs to be started flats or direct seeded. We don't usually do a fall garden, but I'm going to give it a try this year. Usually I clip some growth tips from tomatoes the first week of July, root them and try to get a few fruit before frost. Never really worked well as the days grow shorter and nights grow colder so I did not do so this year. Our fall garden, english peas, carrots, cabbage, broccoli, broccolini, lettuce, brussell sprouts, and Granex onions. I use the 162 cell trays, the 24 cell and the 12 cell and they are all wonderful products that will last forever with normal care. I had forgotten about celery as I have some seeds. Might try them in the grow bags that are just sitting empty now. I have some Swiss Chard seeds someone gave me so I may try those in grow bags as well. I know some video's say to use the grey PVC pipe, but I've got some regular white PVC that I've been using in the garden for more than 15 years (stays out all year). So just use whichever is less expensive. I saw Greg's squash cooking video and I'm going to grow some of those next spring! Another great video and it's time to get dirty again and think about starting seedlings for the fall garden!!!!!
I planted sum yard long beans today, been harvesting sunflower seeds, still have some hossinator and red snapper tomatoes on vine getting ripe daily … my zinnias did great this year (been saving seeds from them too) and still getting watermelons , got a bunch of peppers…getting a few Cherokee tan pumpkins…I’m in south central TEXAS -zone 8 My corn burned up
The old goat is behind the cluck, chicken. The last 2 years i didn't have much luck with the fall garden. I'm in NE Alabama... It's getting colder every winter. I even blanketed my plants... Almost lost my figs! I'm thinking cover crop this year.
Great show! Always enjoy! You ain’t kidding about those top pick purple hulls! Fantastic taste with an even better growth habit! I’ve grown them for several years now and highly recommend!
I can hardly wait for September even though it will make me older. I'm already planning my fall garden, looking forward to starting my plants for transplanting.
Sounds great, thanks David
I plan to grow greens as usual (Florida broadleaf, purple top turnips and kale). Broccoli, cauliflower and Swiss Chard as well.
Sounds great!
@@gardeningwithhoss Thank you.
Oh no. I can’t wait for my lettuces to come in in spring. My sunflowers are getting ready to bloom.

You got that right!
