Good evening from Tallahassee! Earlier this year I commented on how disappointed I was with the Tasty Bites Melons (big vines and no fruit). However, I left the vines in the garden over the hot summer and they have produced melons (of all sizes). They are still producing melons. I also have King Author bell pepper producing peppers (planted in the spring). My onions seeds are coming up in the seeds trays. Take care...
I started my onions, Red Maiden and Savannah Sweet, and they are sprouting. I still need to start some white onions, Carta Blanca. I noted about cutting them back. I planted 100 strawberry plants last year. Was not quite enough. Ordered another 100 this year. I did make some very tasty strawberry jam and family wanted jars of it. Hoping to have enough to make enough jam for me and family next year. Plus I froze some for smoothies and ate a lot fresh. Love strawberries!
The Hossinators Florida 91 and the Homestead tomatoes you recommended are doing fine so far I planted them August 30th, I’m in Haines City FL thanks for your recommendation.
Good Evenin Greg and Miss Sheila. Hope y'all have a good trip to Europe. I tilled mmy garden the last 2 days. Getting it ready for my onions. Startingbthem in the trays in the morning. The old goat is behind the pumpkin cart behind Greg's right shoulder.
Growing up in Northern Michigan, we had a neighbor. The whole neighborhood called her Grandma Becker. I would visit her, and help her. One day just before spring she had me remove the snow from her onion bed. We picked 3 large onions. She said put the snow back to insulate the rest. I wish I had asked what kind of onions they were, and when she planted them.
I really appreciate your teaching. You are very informative and detail oriented. I've tried to grow onions in the past unsuccessfully. They never would form a bulb. I'll apply the things you mentioned in the video. Thank you.
I've never started onions from seed but after watching the show, I can hardly wait. I love onions! Old Goat is standing behind the little pumpkin on the shelf behind Greg.
Just got my Garlic bulbs from you this week. Going to get them planted in my S.W. Missouri garden. Old Goat is behind the tiny wagon with the pumpkins be hind Mr Hoss
I see your old goat on the shelf above the shelf above the “homegrown” sign by the pumpkin. Love this show. I learn so much from you all. Live in Ohio. I’m 75 year old widow with 10 acres. God Bless you and your family
The old goat is behind the wagon with the three pumpkins in it behind Greg . I’m sure glad I watch this because I’m in NC and I was sure fixing to sow my onions seeds . So Greg when do I show my onion seeds to give them the right amount of time for spring setting out . Would it be February or March. Love your shows and my order with all my new seeds for next year . I hit the half off the night it was ending. Unfortunately some of the items I wanted where all ready out . But hey I’m always late .
See that Old Goat up on the third shelf behind Mr.Hoss, looks like he is riding in a wagon (LOL). Got my turnips, mustard greens, sugar peas up and looking good. Also still eating okra, peas, tomatoes, peppers, some green onions, and almost got sweet corn ready! I love fall garden!!
Hey Sheila I cut some of my roselle leaves today, I snacked on some little newer ones and I cut up some larger ones and added to an okra cornbread casserole dish I made. I got an idea for some of my larger ones. I left a long stem on some larger ones and I am thinking that I will make a spicy beer batter, dip those leaves in batter then fry. I think the stem will be a good handle! I'll let you know how that comes out! You all have fun on your vacation coming up!
Took me a bit to find the old goat! He’s up there on the pumpkin wagon. Thanks for the onion info. I had no idea about short-intermediate- and long-day. Good to know!
Used your onion starts last year and had the best onion growing ever. Will do that again. May also try by seed now too. I see the old goat behind the little pumpkin wagon on the shelf behind greg.. thanks for a good informative video.
The old goat is in the pumpkin wagon behind Greg. I have planted swiss chard, celery, and cabbage in my raised beds this week. I guess I will be planting onions this week, I guess.
Second year with Savannah sweet just like last year nearly 100% germantion. Great tasting onions, the curing of this variety is not forgiving, they need a good four to seven days to in good sun, so harvesting need to coincide with a week of heat, not just a rain free week. Thanks to the Hoss Boss for the Get Dirty patch that came with the onion seed, that was cool. That crazy goat is hiding behind the wagon full of pumpkins. Thanks again from Grady Co Ga
I see a pumpkin wagon that says, "Thankful." And that old goat is right there. Getting ready to plant fall crops. Had our first rain here in MONTHS today, 1.5" . We are in the TX Gulf Coast area.
Want to try onions again- had success last year but planted late and they are small. good, but small. I think I see the old goat in the pumpkin decoration to the left of Greg's hat!
As always, I enjoy watching the show. I have struggled with starting onions from seed due to trouble with damping (?) off. I would love some help on this. I keep a low blowing fan on them but it hasn't helped. I really want to be successful with this. And thank you for the tip about cutting them down when they grow to up increase the bulb size. Thank you for all you do to help us grow our own food.
I planted seeds which the envelope stated was catnip, but ended up being onion seeds. Once discovered, I transplanted into new containers. As of this past week I have planted into the ground which I will cover and overwinter in hopes of onions in the spring. Last year my spinach overwintered so I believe my teeny back garden is so protected I'm certain I'll have success. Thanks for the onion video, I had no idea I need to trim them back. I planted onion sets this spring and they are all now in my freezer ready for eating.
Old goat in The pumpkins wagon. Another easy one. I couldn’t get to the live. Missed it😢. Didn’t have much success this year. So thank you for the information. My Rosecelle Hibiscus not blooming. Wonder if I have enough time. Frost date is Oct 15.
Good evening. I’m ready to plant my fall seeds received from y’all. That old goat is on the shelf over Greg’s right shoulder. Third shelf from the bottom.
I wanted to go to petals of the past, but didn’t get to. Maybe next year! The old goat hopped up a shelf tonight! He is hiding behind the cart of pumpkins.
If onions are left to grow about 6 inches tall, plant them deep with only an inch sticking out of the ground in well draining fluffy soil. Let them grow and they end up like leeks if planted close together. I cut the whole plant up, bulb and all to use in stir fry or soups. Plant the seeds close together they grow like bunching onions that can be cut up also. You can leave them in the ground close together and cut the tops to eat and let them grow out again. I found out by accident onions can be grown to different forms and the whole plant can be eaten, except for the tough and dried out parts. Onions can be planted more so out of season this way, avoiding hard frost, of course. By the way, eat those greens in a soup and well, it will clean you out. LOL.
Great video on onions! Haven't grown any in years! May have to try this year! We need short day! We live in upper SC! How many times you cut the onion tops ?Can't wait to use my new trays! Thanks so much! I see the old goat behind the little pumpkin wagon,on top white shelf! But we already won!
