To answer your ;question a slip comes off the potato and a draw is a section off the slip and put in water to root; At least that is what I was taught by a farmer in Tennessee. He was a farmer by trade. He passed away at the age of 95 and farmed all his life. Put my sweet potatoes in yesterday in a raised bed. Our last frost was the first of this month here in Leo, Indiana. We are about 10 minutes north of Fort Wayne. We are in zone 6a. Love the flowers and your squash. Gorgeous!!!
My favorite sweet potato recipe is Senator Russell’s Sweet Potato Casserole. We always have this for Thanksgiving, Christmas, new years and goes well with turnips and collards. 3 1/2 cups sweet potatoes 1/2 cup sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 cup milk 1/4 butter, softened Topping: 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/3 cup flour 1/4 butter, melted 1 cup chopped pecans PREPARATION Bake potatoes at 450 degrees for one hour. Scoop potatoe from jacket. Combine potatoes, sugar, eggs, vanilla, milk and butter. Place in large casserole. For the topping: Combine brown sugar, flour, butter and pecans. Place on top of potatoes in casserole. Cover casserole. Can be prepared a day ahead to this point. Bake covered at 275 degrees for approximately 50 minutes. Uncover for last 10 minutes of cooking.
I’m loving sweet potatoes as fries like Mama Hoss, the Old Goat loves them too, that’s why he’s hiding amongst them behind her.😊 Love the Sunflowers Shiela❤️
The ole goat...Behind Miss Sheila in the sweet potatoes! My favorite way to use sweet potatoes is sweet potato souffle 🍠! Grandkids love the sweet potato fries..
Thank you for all your videos. I grow orleans sweet potato slips I purchased online. I like that they are small and can be a single serving for one person. I also grew slips from a store bought sweet potato. I am in New England 6b. I will always grow sweet potatoes from now on. I purchased 15 gallon, plastic grow bags from a "grow" store. I fill it with my homemade compost. I plant 2 slips per bag. This is my last crop to be harvested. I turn the bag out on my rasied beds, then harvest and spread the compost. You are so right, they are a very sustainable vegetable to grow! I love them roasted in my air fryer with butter salt and pepper with a dash of cinnamon.
I still have some sweet potatoes from last year. I just put a few slips in water a few days ago. Since hubby doesn't like them, I don't need too many. I love them with butter, brown sugar, a touch of lemon juice, covered with marshmallows. I see old goat behind Greg, hiding in the square white planter, in the greenery. We have lots of birds in our garden 😮.
My favorite way to eat sweet potatoes is anyway you can cook them. One of my favorite potatoes. Growing some this year for the first time ever. Great tips in this show. I needed them
It’s Saturday and I’m just now getting to watch this week’s show-been busy getting dirty. Sweet potatoes in 15 gallon grow pouches do well for me -easy. My favorite is the white variety because it can be used so many different ways to give a sweet and salty contrast-yum. Old goat is on the shelf behind the vase of sunflowers nestled in next to a sweet potato. Favorite way to fix sweet potatoes is french fried with ketchup.
Thanks for sharing alternatives to flat gardening! Favorite way to eat sweet potatoes: soufflé! Old Goat spotted: in metal basket on sweet potato behind Mama Hoss 😁
Mr. Hoss, you can grow sweet potatoes on a trellis. Works great! You spotlighted my garden way back like 6-8 months ago and commented on how I was growing them in a 55 Gallon barrel and climbing up and over my arch. Pest pressure was zero on those puppies, it was amazing. Now I did line that barrel with woven weave for protection from drying out and drilled holes in the sides for more oxygen. Grew so many we are still eating them today. Give it a try my friend, works great and grandkids had a blast searching for hidden potatoes in the barrel at harvest.
Absolutely love yall , I received yalls Sweet potato slips , getting prepared to plant them here in Montgomery County, Texas. Im putting in 9- (15 gallon grow bags ), putting dirt to the top of bags & putting 2 or 3 slips per bag , planting Tuesday May 28, 2024 . God bless you all Mrs josette Montgomery County, Texas 🙏
I love candied sweet potatoes with lots of sugar and butter with a little orange juice. Old goat sneaky this week. Took a while but I’m pretty sure he’s hiding in the sweet potatoes behind Mama❤
Thanks for the sweet potato tips; I've never grown them, but you're making a convincing case for giving them a try! I love sweet potato chips--either sliced thin on a v-slicer or run through the spiralizer on a thin setting for sweet potato curly chips, then deep fried. I think Old Goat is hiding on the bottom shelf on Sheila's side; he was tough to find this week! Also, I was a Monterey giveaway winner a few weeks ago (I'm continuing to answer the weekly questions because they're fun), and the prize is much-appreciated! It was packaged well, and the products are great. I have already used the horticultural oil to spray my indoor plants and the yellow sticky traps to capture any fungus gnats that survived. It worked wonderfully on my plant starts, and even with the grow lights so close to the plants, not a single plant was damaged. Thank you (and Monterey) for such a generous and very useful giveaway!
I love my GreenStalks. I have 4 of them. The leaf keeps us in greens all winter. I can grow carrots easily in them. I use my original Greenstalk out front for micro tomatoes for my Mom. I am growing in the back yard of a city lot, the GreenStalk gives me the ability to grow more in the tiny space I have. I also have 8 raised beds in the back yard. I love my seeds from Hoss. My sweet potatoes came in last week, and I put them in a bed I made out of a recalled crib, hardware cloth, and weed barrier to line it. I let the vines climb a willow panel. The beauty of growing them in the raised crib is I can water them from the sides. I grow potatoes in burlap bags.
I received my sweet potato slips two weeks ago and they are looking good. My favorite way to consume sweet potatoes is baking them then adding lots of butter and cinnamon. This is so good, sometimes I consider it my dessert.
I ordered my sweet potatoes from y’all and I have been following the advice you gave me on how to fertilize them. These things looks so good they are taken off.
Planted some of my sweet potato slips today. Have to wait to plant the rest until my potatoes come out. I grow them in a raise bed and they do great. Old goat is on Mama Hoss in the basket by the sweet potatoes.
I love sweet tater leaves in a salad with hot bacon honey mustard dressing. old goat is in the basket with the flowers on the bottom shelf. Pretty flowers!

Dang the old goat is getting sneaky and shy again. Did find him peeking out from behind the sweet potatoes behind Mama Hoss. As for the Monterey entry this week - Sweet potato souffle or fries for us! We are going to try growing sweet potatoes in 15 and 25 gallon fabric grow bags this season. Also trying the Evangeline variety for the first time. Greg made a excellent point about the drip tape as insurance against drought. I will take note and put the drip in the bags when I plant the slips so I can water without wetting the leaves later if needed (and not have to fight leaves trying to put it in later). I've converted to 100% water soluble fertilization this year and so far the results are amazing (using commercial production formulas and some "home mixed"). So drip on the sweet potato bags will be extra important for us this year. I would bet those birds that were stuck in the Monterey sticky traps were trying to eat the insects that were previously trapped and then got stuck also!
Sweet potatoes - we eat a LOT roasted, I'm a big fan of the Sunday roast with roasted vegetables! I also like adding it into pumpkin/squash soup to add some extra deliciousness! Hubby loves it as sweet potato casserole (not my fav, so it's his job to make!).
I remember as a child on my Grannies farm, (SW Oklahoma)..she planted about an acre of sweet potatoes every year...many people came to dig their own. They were always a favorite, but don't know what variety. She also had at least an acre of Black eyed peas for people to pick.
Sweet potato soufflé is the best! Mama Hoss I would love to see a tour of your raised bed garden to see what you have growing! Thank you both for all the great info you pass on!

I cube up my sweet potatoes and roast them with cinnamon and butter, then freeze dry. Such a wonderful healthy snack, and no matter what variety, they'll keep for years.
I grow kale, collards, parsley, Strawberries and the little birdie tomatoes in my greenstalk. I love it! I'm hoping to get one for my mother in law since she has mobility issues
Favorite way to eat sweet taters is souffle/casserole, but it's really however I'm eating them at the time! I love them! Thanks to Monterey for sponsoring that great giveaway package! Great show, as always! Thanks! Ol Goat is getting him some sweet taters behind Mama Hoss on the bottom shelf! Tough this week! You're right about that phosphorous, Greg! I'll pump a 55 gal. drum of lake water, which we fertilize, and water with it a few times before the vines get too thick. Lake fertilizer, as you know, is LOADED in P! I didn't grow any last year, and you've about talked me into getting a bundle from y'all!
I love that you watch Hollis and Nancy!! I have learned so much from their videos!
I have had my sweet potatoes in water for a couple months and I’ve pulled off over 100 slips from them and still coming!!😂
