The Story Of Full Throttle (PC) - LucasArts Go BAD - Kim Justice

- Full Throttle was a different sort of game for LucasArts - a more adult adventure designed by Tim Schafer filled with big bikes, a bit of violence and a gruff hero by the name of Ben. It was a risk, but it turned out ok - and this review takes a look at the classic to see if it's still good. Enjoy!

Such fond memories of the LucasArts point and click games! A great time when the PC was really coming into mainstream as the best way to play games.
Happy 6 years Kim!! Thanks thus far for the amazing content, and all the content to come :)
Happy anniversary, Kim! Here’s to many more!
LucasArts really was operating on a completely different level when it came to oint-and-click adventures.
This game is class, the animation is unreal. I gotta play it again sometime. Blade runner is another good point n click
So true! I loved Blade Runner. Wish there was an easy way to play these old point and clicks on a Mac.
Kim, you have got me through some dark times with your top notch docs.
Great video Kim - I never played FT (I played the life out of Sam N Max but never really got into the bulk of the LucasArts' point and click stuff) but I'd love to have a proper look now.
And something I've been meaning to mention for a while, but it really jumped out at me with this one - the production values of your documentaries are wonderful. The editing, the visual cuts, the audio levels (I'm thinking about the level of the soundtrack under your narration) - all perfectly judged.
Happy 6 years indeed, you make fabulous videos.
Really enjoyed that. LucasArts are so close to my heart!
Thanks Kim! Honestly, I think, that LucasArts' retreat from the adventure genre was a huge mistake. Compared to other genres, adventures are quite inexpensive and need no team of 50 programmers, artists and alike. Me, as an old adventure fan, would love to spend money on new titles like Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, The Dig, etc. And I'm for sure not alone. Just look at the Kickstarter for the latest Broken Sword title, or Timbleweed Park. People want those games. And like you, most of them want them without silly action sequences.
Personally I didn't like moon logic very much, so I'm no Sierra type, although I loved space quest and the first Gabriel Knight.
P.S.
Why would anyone give this video a thumbs down? You didn't like it? Don't watch it. You come to another conclusion? Discuss it. But this video was neither rude, nor offending to anyone. I don't understand those people...
The game always gave me some post-apocalyptic vibes, though not in the traditional sense, not in the comic book/pulp style of the Road Warrior, but more in the style of the original Mad Max movie if you've seen it, which is way different and perhaps a more accurate description would be "dystopian future". I felt that Full Throttle followed (or at least paid a small tribute at some parts) that dystopian counterculture style of this film than what we associate today with post-apocalyptic craziness that followed.
the pixel animation in Full Throttle is well worth playing the game in its original mode. I mean, I'm a stickler for playing games as they were originally presented, warts and all, but I strongly disagree with anyone who tries to "fix" pixel art, smoothing it out or upping the resolution. I can't justify to someone how I want to play Grim Fandango in its original low-rez mode, but I think I have more of a point with games like Full Throttle, where the pixel art is so good.
I wouldn't subscribe that for every game. Day of the Tentacle and Grim Fandango were enhanced with much respect. The Anniversary Gabriel Knight was nice, but obsolete, imho. And in addition to that, I'd say, that it is good, that those games become playable on modern systems without Scumm and DosBox, cause many people are just not able to get them running.
Also, when it comes to the latest LucasArts remakes, you can always switch back to the original pixel grafics, if you prefer.
But I would much more prefer, if this amount of work would be put into new games, instead of refurbishing classic titles.
Conrad played Ben as a character that doesn’t need to “act” badass, instead using understated toughness to portray a character that IS badass.
Congratulations, Kim. :) Thank you for another amazing video.
I love that Ben has eyebrows that flutter in the wind while he is on his motorcycle
Hot damn Kim, you‘re on fire. You hit a streak of some of my all time favorite games lately.
I remember a LucasArts special on Gamesmaster on C4 (thats actually on RUclips I found recently) covering the soon to come Dark Forces and this. Was dying to play this for years and years and when I finally did I remembered the bits from the episode that was taped off the TV so cleary due to so many awe filled watches haha! You rock Kim, love your videos
Happy 6th anniversary, Kim!
I remember picking this up back in the day when I was 12. Even to this day the sound of, "not gonna happen" is embedded in my tiny brain.
My dream sequel to this would be a prequel, set perhaps 10 years before these events when the Polecats were lead by Father Torque and Ben is his right hand. Some kind of betrayal story heavily featuring the Rottwheelers, the Polecats long term rivals. Because Ben will be younger you can cast a different voice actor. Someone who can capture the tone and style of Conroy, but sounds like he's in his twenties. Father Torque retires and Ben becomes the new leader of the Polecats, creating a link to the start of Full Throttle.
I saw what you did with Sam & Max, Telltale Games. Maybe there are a few fans of FT working there that would love to revive the IP one day! I can only dream.
The Dig video next!
I love Dean Ambrose theme in the background
This game was utterly stunning at the time - and tremendous fun to play.
Kim, you HAVE to do a classic 2 hour video on Lucas Arts. DOTT, Sam N Max, X-Wing and Tie Fighter etc... it's a whole thing.

Loved LucasArts stuff - great vid!
Full Throttle was one of my favourite PC point and click games, fond memories
I also liked the length of this game, felt just right. It was always interesting and I even liked the 'action' parts mainly because of the feel they created visually. Another excellent video, thanks.
Yeah even though it was basic it still felt tense and I like how it broke the game up with some diversity.
There is ONE puzzle though. That kicking that single part of the wall puzzle.
"But im still chasin' chitlins, whiskey, and skirt"
Enjoyed this game , but what sticks with me most was my surprise when I found out Mark hamill voiced ripburger he sounds so different
I always loved the art and the settings in Full Throttle as a kid, but somehow i never finished it until recently... i think i could never beat that weird Destruction Derby race in that futuristic town, as a kid i just had no clue what to do whatsoever....
never got into point and click because I never had a floppy drive for my C64 and I wanted to play Police Quest. Also Kim, would be good if you did a piece on Interstate 76 that was a very special game, 3d Car Wars set in the 1970's with a story.
Interstate '76 is badass, one of my favourite early (for me) PC games. This was when I first got a PC and this was one of the core titles that hooked me in. '82 wasn't bad, either.
i enjoyed the spin off - vigilante 8 too
Full throttle is an absolute classic.
Get on it people!
thank you very much Kim! :)
Great vid as always.
I thought Ben's surname was Dover ... 😉
First! but then it's only right! Another brilliant video Kim! thank you so much!
I really like this game very much, having lots of fond memories of playing it when it was released in France. And the French voice cast was really spot on. 🎬
Ozone Sama back then, LucasArts out as much effort into their foreign voice casts as their English one. They made sure that every cast fit the characters perfectly. If I remember right several of the producers ended up learning several languages so they could monitor translations and voice casts better.
Back then LucasArts were ridiculous about quality control.
Awesome Kim.... And PLEASE, PLEASE do a lengthy Broken Sword video ❤️❤️❤️
Awesome game awesome channel awesome video!
Imo the best point and click adventure game of all time.
For the most part, Full Throttle is a light game and I mostly found it relaxing, esp. since you can skip the bike and car sections :P
If anything it's a game I like to play if looking for a 'feel good' adventure game romp.
Happy 6th Kim !!
Insomnia is really hitting me hard tonight and then I see this ..fuck it..sleep can wait!
Nice use of Dean Ambrose theme Kim :)
I can't get enough of KJ productions
Full Throttle was a bit of a near miss in my eyes - I didn't enjoy it like I did the Monkey Island series. I think that may have been due to my age at the time though. I respected it rather than liked it.
Great vid as always Kim.
I feel the same. Loved Monkey Island, DoTT, Zak McKracken, Maniac Mansion, even LOOM... Full Throttle was good but never caught me in the way those other games did.
Very interesting. I had never heard of that one :)
I don’t remember Malcom Corley being terminally ill? I’m pretty sure that was a lie by Ripburger to try and convince Ben.
Hmmmm well it was George Lucas that told David Fox to add the ability to shoot down enemy craft/turrets on mountains in Behind the Jaggi Lines after play testing the flight simulator search and rescue only gameplay of the original design, clearly he did play games with Lucasfilm name attached at the start. Perhaps he just thought point and click technically unimpressive crap was not for him....and who can blame him? lol
I had sooo much fun playing the game back then 😁👍
(Yes I'm old)
Day of the Tentacle was the first video game I beat, somehow at 6 years old. i doubt I could do it now without a guide.
Wow. I couldn't beat it at sixteen. :)
i'm not putting my lips on that!, great video
The Dig is made over the same mold
2 hours?! I was stuck near start for almost that amount..
.
Worries about the owners of biker mice from mars suing them? If those fears were founded, it would be pretty obnoxious considering that one of the main characters is riding Kaneda’s bike, it’s just there.
I can't understand your sub count Kim. You make great content the Attenborough of gaming.
The population is greatly decreased
And now the odds are greatly increased
That I may someday get a chance to kiss your lips
I thank the Lord each day for the apocalypse
Folks are mostly disfigured or dead
But sugar, I won't let it go to my head
My mama's face has dripped down into the dirt
But I'm still chasing chitlins, whiskey and skirt
This game may just forever have that tag of "what if"...in regards to a sequel this game SHOULD have got, but will never get...l know the "voice of Ben" has gone, but they could have put the focus on Ben's son for example leading a new generation of polecats...and then take the story from there..
No mention of the extremely hard to find Easter egg
Go ahead
12:26 well, that was embarassing
Un jeu inoubliable.
👍👍👍👍👍👍
I hate when RUclipsrs point out specifics of audio in a game, especially voice acting, and then not let us hear what theyre talking about
Not with my box of bunnies.
Where are their eyes??
Dean ambrose!
First background music track is so annoying and loud...
Got an idea for a future show... Star Wars. Death of a Franchise. :) :) :)
