Oil pastels!! Try linseed oil and a brush to buff ❤ oil pastels do often contain extras like wax but if you use a drying oil like linseed it won't only blend but help them dry down !!! Would love to know ff you try it !!😊
Oh my gosh this looks like the trauma I went through the other day with wax crayons! Absolute nightmare to blend!! The mittens did turn out cute though!! I loved your magical blanket!! Especially the detailed stitches that you added. And the cupcake was adorable. I’m so so happy you are enjoying my book still 😍☺️
It's so sad that people are saying bad comment like telling you you're ignorant 🤦♀️ There is so much art supply, no one can know every one... and to know it you need to experiment with it ! I think it's nice to see you're video were it's not always perfect, because it shows the reality of it. Stay you and don't change the way you do art !🫶
Okay that is exactly my experience with oil pastels captured! If it’s a quality issue, then it will be added to my my experience of bad art supplies leading me feeling inadequate and robbing the joy out of the art they’re supposed to be representing. (Bitter rant over) Loved, loved, loved the background and really the whole snowman cupcake pic!
I love this and even tried it myself recently. I have an arteza set of watercolor pencils and i use them periodically. They are more.pigmented than regular colored pencils too so i enjoy them for filling large areas of color in. I've had 10 years of art school experience and i still feel like a person in her craft room making art. I really feel that phrase. It doesn't have to be perfect and i enjoy watching the process of creating and getting messy.
@@RoseRequinCraftsThese oil pastels seem to be more on the crayony side. The really good ones are a lot smoother and softer. You could buy just a few pieces of Senneliers oil pastels. I got some in a scrawlrbox and although the medium was completely new to me and I don't like to get my hands dirty, I fell deeply in love with oil pastels that day. Tried many other oil pastels after that but these other brands are only nice when you already like the medium. Tipps: When you have a white you can use that for blending. Also giving it a day to set inbetween layers makes it easier to add new colors on top. Also you might just try adding baby oil with a small brush. Since you didn't like the process anyway you might as well try, right? And those little flaky bits - with the good ones you have waaaaaay less - you can pick them up with a kneaded eraser or just some washi tape. I really would love to see you try out Senneliers ❤ In said scrawlrbox I got black, white, dark blue, turquoise, yellow and a light brown. I did so much magical, fairy looking art with that one set! Keep up the good work and don't stop being "ignorant". You can't know everything and that's okay. Actually it's a huge part of what makes your videos charming and interesting to watch. You show the daily life of someone who likes to do arts and crafts and just tries her best. I feel very comfortable and seen with this approach. While I watch big creators too, it's your videos that inspirer me the most to just get up and try something lately. 😊
Tell you BF that she is super talented! I can see why you adore that blanket! I love the snowman cupcake the best. Snowmen are just the cutest! Tell the commenter that sometimes ignorance is bliss.
Omg that blanket your friend made!!😮 amazing!!! I loved the cute snowman. The oil pastels kind of give nails on a chalkboard feels xx thanks for the video ❤
if you wanna try again with the pastels- some better-quality ones are the Pentel brand oil pastels, i did a piece with them and had very minimal issues. A small tip for blending that i've learned is start with dark first but make it a very light go over on the paper for the shadows and go over it with the lighter version of the color you put down. When blending use very cheap cores paper towels (school bathroom quality). That's all i have to say, very well done for your first try!
Hmm, with oil pastels it might be a better idea to buy just one artist quality one to play around with rather than use cheap ones, you'd probably get a more accurate feel for how they work. They're basically two completely different mediums. But I think you did a great job with them, the mittens were adorable ❤ And I love the rainbow snow background for the cupcake, something about it just makes me feel happy when I see it😊
You did well , i liked the second and 3rd drawings , for watercolored pencils, you can use them as watercolor for a first base ,then add a second harder layer , or you can simply use them as a first layer for coverage, then use a different supply on top , like prismacolor pencils, The oil pastel wether they are student or artists ones, they all leaves crumbs! You just need to embrace them , that's their nature, they are fun to use 😊
I loved your pages this week, especially the happy melting snowman! I’m also new with oil pastels, but so far my favorite blending tool is a silicone color shaper. You may already have one in your clay art supplies! I get a good blend when I place the colors down almost touching each other, then use the color shaper to push the colors together. It can also be helpful to pick off any of those chunks the pastels can make. Excited to see what you create next week!
The blanket is so stinkin cute!!! My fave page is the snowman cupcake too. The markers look amazing and so smooth. And you are not ignorant. You are trying new things. It’s something most people could probably benefit from. 💜
I've never been able to get watercolor pencils or oil pastels to work even with blending sticks and gamsol and baby oil and watercolor paper and mixed media paper and all of that - so I am just convinced that people who can make them look amazing are witches engaging in magic lol. and huge eyeroll at the idiot commenter - they are the ignorant ones! Your pages are so fun! I'm really impressed you didn't give up on those oil pastels. I'm not very good with them but haven't put much effort in either...I do know quality def makes a difference 😜 I think you will enjoy your watercolor pencils more on watercolor paper 😁 something I have fun doing is to lightly color a base layer and paint that out with water. Then dip my pencils in water and go in for darker detail ;) there are multiple ways to use watercolor pencils, so I really hope you have fun playing around with them! Also, they are great for mixed media projects 😁
Mood and solidarity about having not used oil pastels for literal ages! When I opened up my Grabie advent day 01 and saw them? I was legit all over the internet going "HOW DOES" for ideas. I think you did a fantastic job despite the challenges. Something I discovered with the metallic ones in particular is that black sketchbook pages/cards worked better as a surface. They popped with a much more appealing (to me) colour dynamic. Blending was still questionable at best... but I could live with the challenge by making it all look like 90s graffiti. Something to consider for when you try again, mayhaps? Have been binging quite a few of your videos lately - I've been sick with sinus infection and usually inhale new (to me) content wholesale while resting. Your voice and videos have been very relaxing and inspirational, so thank you for sharing with us.
Hi Rose - aside from them being cheap, oil pastels are something like practice for oil painting... it's not good for graphics or illustrations. With good ones, you can practice doing landscapes and portraits where the details blend with layering and layering etc. They are not crayons or markers. And if you "want" they dissolve with acetone which is cheap and not deadly.
It's been years since I used oil pastels and I'm not sure that I ever used them properly but I liked them anyway. If I remember correctly I used to scrape the excess bits off with whatever ruler I had to hand and I think I used to sometimes thin them out with white spirits.
The watercolor pencil lines are called ghosting. Your blanket is really 🥰 and thanks for trying new supplies. Its really interesting to see all the new art stuff amazon & others sell. 😊 Happy Holidays from Kentucky ❤
Commented before the video finished. U know what Ghosting is. ❤ Hey, if u get free time look up black bean. He does awesome character oil pastels. I'm not a pastel person either but his art is so cool looking. Definitely check him out. Amazing artist.
Whoever commented that is...a big stupid head!😂 Everyone is ignorant until they learn about a supply. U literally said u were new with watercolor & pastels.
I'm sorry someone called you ignorant--that's SO rude! But thank you for pointing out that there's NOTHING WRONG with being ignorant! Everyone is ignorant about a lot of things! And we can edcuate ourselves by learning and trying and practicing. It's only when we decide that we don't have to learn anymore that ignorance becomes a negative thing.
Gamsol isn't really fummy. It is a slow evaporating, much less toxic alternative to old fashion solvents, that are kind of deadly. Because it is slow to evaporate, there are very little fumes and it doesn't have all those nasty ingredients, so it generally wont make you feel sick or do anything. I use Q tips for pastels, as they are cheap and always available :) The mittens came out very cute. I have oil pastels to try and use. Bought them in 2020 and that's almost as far as I have gotten with them.
Oil pastels are tricky because typically when you get an art supply, you get a kind of cheaper one just to test it out to see if you like it but cheap oil pastels are so bad and do not represent the medium correctly. The way I use oil pastels isn’t the traditional way, I put it on canvas and I’m really heavy-handed with it because it’s a lot easier to blend with thick layers and then you could go back and scratch details into it. I highly recommend blackbean’s videos on them. Their art with oil pastels is SCRUMPTIOUS
That afghan is sooo lovely!! 💞 Not only is it cozy and cute and rainbow, it was made with love, the best, cozy item in the world!! 💖 Arteza watercolor pencils are not vibrant. Check... Oil pastels give me the hebbie geebies!! 🤣 You created adorable mittens!! 😍 I wonder about blending them with waxed paper? But I'm not gonna go outta my way to try them again... I love the Sharpie paint markers, and we need them to make more colors!! 🌈 You made an adorable drawing with them!! 🥰 A melted snowman is so cute!! ☃️
This video really showed your sovereignty with any kind of markers! The rainbow snow was GORGEOUS 😍 Your feelings with watercolour pencils and oil pastels are my exact feelings with markers 😂I suck with them! Watercolour pencils and oil pastels are really intuitive to me, I "just know" what to do with them. Just like you do with markers! My art style is quite abstract and expressive, and I struggle greatly with having any outlines and lines in general restricting me 😄I hate colouring books with a passion. I also hate when colours are blended for me, I don't know what to do with predestined shades 😆My trusty 15-year old watercolour pencil set has only warm and cool primary colours plus black, grey and white and I love it fondly 🤌Luckily they still sell individual pencils to that set so they're replaceable! The metal box doesn't even fully close anymore because of hardcore use 😄 And that's why I love watching your videos. You give me fresh ideas and inspiration! Opposites attract, they say 😄
I love oil pastels, but in my (amateur hobbyist) opinion, paper isnt always the best medium for them, and I don't really blend them the same way you would other supplies, I just sort of layer them on top of one another and move them around with silicone tools. If you ever get canvas pads, they often work better for the pastels but never 'dry'.
You can use oils (linseed oil, walnut oil) used for oil painting to blend oil pastels! Edit: And to set them, you'll definitely want a fixative, though hairspray might work in a pinch.
Hopefully you can get a small set of higher quality oil pastels someday to play with! Also, I feel like oil pastels and charcoal are both mediums you have to lean into the mess. And wash and moisturize your hands a LOT afterwards, lol
Oil pastels just don't play nice sadly! They work well for rich pigment if you use confident strokes and don't try to blend/use techniques youd use with other art supplies (atleast the cheaper ones! I think u did great its just that oil pastels are like lil toddlers in the no phase that refuse to follow standard art rules
Does your friend have a youtube channel? Her crochet is frikkin’ awesome❤. I love your video’s too🤩, they’re so soothing and you create so many adorable things, please keep up the good work😻🥰
That blanket is amazing! What a cool gift from your bestie =) The once or twice I messed with oil pastels, I liked them-- BUT I wasn't trying to make anything specific, just pretty abstract swirls. Bummer about that comment, btw =( The snowman is fun--especially his background =)
Its not your fault pastels are usually crumbly and messy although i think you should try a different brand, also its easier to seal if you use hairspray dont know why but the a few layered sprays dryes out and seals oil pastels, just wait between layers and a little distance as you spray not too close or you might get a white space you wont be able to fix.
Those look like pretty bad oil pastels, which is 100% not your fault. If you really want to try some good ones at a good price, try Mungyo Gallery oil pastels. They are SOOOO much better than the other options at that price. They even make water soluble oil pastels if you really want to try something totally different. You are NOT ignorant. You are amazing 💖
I haven't used oil pastels since back in high school art class. I think we had a pretty good quality set, whatever it was I can't remember. But I do remember they seemed to blend better over a medium, like Gesso. I wouldn't mind trying them out again. Just keep me away from chalk pastels 😂 I will choke everyone with my "fairy dust"
That blanket is bleepmazing, and I would instantly know whose it was. I totally love the Sharpie paint pens. Try them on black paper multimedia paper. They also combine well with other brands and Sakura gel pen. I have never done well with oil pastels. The texture makes me want to hide under the table. I think there's also a quality issue here, since a box of schoolroom Prang pastels give better color than these poor kids. Ignorance is not a character flaw. Meanness absolutely is.
about hte blending stump, they take longer and sometimes take a bit pf practice and even with blending stupms there are good and bad ones. but the problem is the switching between fingers and stump. the moment you use your fingers you transfer oil from your skin and it alters the paper and the blendability. depending on the piece and medium you're working you should even avoid resting your hand on the paper, too long. also blendingstums suck with oil pastels
I totally get what you mean by not wanting to spend money to try a medium you might end up hating in the end anyway...i am the same way! But sometimes, the low quality item isn't giving us the real experience of what it would be like working with the medium. And in this case i feel like that's what the case is. These don't lay, blend, or work even remotely like pastels typically do. So from start grabie has set you up to fail, in that regard. My recommendation is to not write off pastels based off this experience. Those did not look enjoyable to work with 😅😅
I may have glanced at some other brands at Michael's, but I think we're gonna still be acquaintances for awhile before me and pastels are ever best friends.
Put lotion on your hands and then try to blend the oil pastels with your fingers. Try baby oil on a Qtip. It’s not going to be any more smeary than the oil pastels themselves. I like the snowman a lot too When it comes to those watercolor pencils. After you activate them on the page, try coloring over the wet area to add more depth. Depends on the brand whether this works or not. It is worth a try.
Dear Rose, reality is that we are ALL born ignorant. Even those people who ridicule us for our ignorance. I speak 5 languages and am learning Japanese as my 6th, this is what I know. I am also the very same person who needs help every time she wants to put water in the wind shield wipers reservoir of her car. Every time. I am very ignorant in almost everything related to vehicle mechanics, and I'm perfectly OK with it, it's just not something I'm interested in (it actually bores me to oblivion). We only have 24 hours in the day, and learn what we want to learn. Even after we've learned a bunch, we are still ignorant of 99.99999% of everything else. And by the way, I've been saying for at least 30 years that the moment I "know everything" and have nothing else to learn I'll jump from a 5th. The only "sin" of ignorance is not being curious enough to chip at it, little by little, and you're doing just that. We're all doing just that, it's inevitable. Ignore. Thanks for what you share, it's always a breath of fresh air, including your "fails" 😊 There's no other animal in the world who gets depressed by "failure". If cats don't catch a mouse, they'd simply starve if they didn't try to catch the next one. There is NO failure, only experimentation. You must know, as a Montessori teacher 😊 By the way, your issues with oil pastel might be due to the... freezing cold! It might have been a little easier to blend by using a hairdrier... but who knows, I'm also very ignorant in this case 😁
Using the word "ignorant" is horrible. Of course someone is "ignorant" (lacking knowledge of) about art supplies they don't know about. What kind of point were they trying to make? You are also actively trying to find new art supplies, and learn how to use them. What an odd comment to make.
What does New To the media mean >:/ Haters Also try Q-Tips next time when you try the oil Pastels... Might be a little easier on the wrists its a softer kinda blending stick
Wow. Ppl are so rude. Did this person come out of the womb knowing everything? 🙄 I have my BFA and I don’t know everything about every art supply, so I guess I’m ignorant too! 😂 I do love oil pastels, I’ve just always layered them and done things that look less realistic with them. I think the reason you’re having blending issues is because they’re not high quality oil pastels. Like impressionistic landscapes.
That blanket from your friend is Awesome!!!

The mittens came out very cute. I have oil pastels to try and use. Bought them in 2020 and that's almost as far as I have gotten with them.
🤣 I'm pretty sure I have an even cheaper set of oil pastels in a drawer somewhere that are about that old.
These look fantastic, I might have to give oil pastels another go ☺
🤨 girl....
@@RoseRequinCraftsokay the other 2 are better 😂 but the oil pastel one looks good! I just find it hard to get past the messiness
Same. The tape doesn't even stick to it so its basically cocooned in a plastic envelope on the page.
Love Blackbean so much. I probably better pay better technical attention instead of just marveling at the art and personality.
Oh boy I don't miss that burnishing with oil pastels.
🤣
Lol, yeah, I'm not too sure about oil pastels...
@RoseRequinCrafts I understand!! 🤗
This video really showed your sovereignty with any kind of markers! The rainbow snow was GORGEOUS 😍
Your feelings with watercolour pencils and oil pastels are my exact feelings with markers 😂I suck with them!
The metal box doesn't even fully close anymore because of hardcore use 😄
And that's why I love watching your videos. You give me fresh ideas and inspiration! Opposites attract, they say 😄
That's so funny, because I'm so jealous of people like you that can just create freely with their heart. I'm always so in my head.
I'm gonna have to try that!
You can use oils (linseed oil, walnut oil) used for oil painting to blend oil pastels!
Edit: And to set them, you'll definitely want a fixative, though hairspray might work in a pinch.
Good to know!
Hopefully you can get a small set of higher quality oil pastels someday to play with! Also, I feel like oil pastels and charcoal are both mediums you have to lean into the mess. And wash and moisturize your hands a LOT afterwards, lol
That's what I've been learning! 🤦♀️
I am with you, in that my first experience with oil pastels was my last. I hated them.
🤣 Maybe in another 30 years I'll try them again
Oil pastels just don't play nice sadly! They work well for rich pigment if you use confident strokes and don't try to blend/use techniques youd use with other art supplies (atleast the cheaper ones! I think u did great its just that oil pastels are like lil toddlers in the no phase that refuse to follow standard art rules
Ooh, don't tell me that, lol. I'm well versed in stubborn toddlers and it makes me wanna win out over oil pastels even more.
Does your friend have a youtube channel? Her crochet is frikkin’ awesome❤. I love your video’s too🤩, they’re so soothing and you create so many adorable things, please keep up the good work😻🥰
She does not. 😢 But she does like to lurk in the comment section, lol
Alpacas will (probably) let you pet them. Llamas will attack you because you looked at it funny.
So I guess I pet first, label later?
That blanket is amazing! What a cool gift from your bestie =)
The once or twice I messed with oil pastels, I liked them-- BUT I wasn't trying to make anything specific, just pretty abstract swirls. Bummer about that comment, btw =(
The snowman is fun--especially his background =)
Thank you! 🥰 Not sure yet if I ever wanna try them again 🤣
I appreciate that! I'll definitely look into those!
🤣
Yaa
ignorant means you don't know something & you do not try learn...
good manners are something many people are ignorant about.
🤣 very true
That blanket is bleepmazing, and I would instantly know whose it was.
I totally love the Sharpie paint pens. Try them on black paper multimedia paper. They also combine well with other brands and Sakura gel pen.
I have never done well with oil pastels. The texture makes me want to hide under the table. I think there's also a quality issue here, since a box of schoolroom Prang pastels give better color than these poor kids.
Ignorance is not a character flaw. Meanness absolutely is.
Ooh! I will definitely have to try them on black paper. That sounds cool
about hte blending stump, they take longer and sometimes take a bit pf practice and even with blending stupms there are good and bad ones. but the problem is the switching between fingers and stump. the moment you use your fingers you transfer oil from your skin and it alters the paper and the blendability. depending on the piece and medium you're working you should even avoid resting your hand on the paper, too long. also blendingstums suck with oil pastels
Grrr. So many variables. 🤯
🥰
That denim blue was pretty reddish 😅
I think I eventually figured out it was Wine Red. Someone in the factory was sleeping on the job.
Better ignorant than mean. 💕
Very true
8:58 ur not doing anything wrong really girl....I think those pastels are just not great quality 😢
I think you're right
Put lotion on your hands and then try to blend the oil pastels with your fingers. Try baby oil on a Qtip. It’s not going to be any more smeary than the oil pastels themselves.
I like the snowman a lot too
When it comes to those watercolor pencils. After you activate them on the page, try coloring over the wet area to add more depth. Depends on the brand whether this works or not. It is worth a try.
Thank you for the tips!
Ignore.
Thanks for what you share, it's always a breath of fresh air, including your "fails" 😊
There's no other animal in the world who gets depressed by "failure". If cats don't catch a mouse, they'd simply starve if they didn't try to catch the next one.
There is NO failure, only experimentation. You must know, as a Montessori teacher 😊
By the way, your issues with oil pastel might be due to the... freezing cold! It might have been a little easier to blend by using a hairdrier... but who knows, I'm also very ignorant in this case 😁
Maybe the paper was messing with your art stuff?
Possible. I have no idea lol
Ooh, I'll keep that in mind. 😀
Like impressionistic landscapes.
rainbow because you're gay
I'm not actually....but it wouldn't matter if I was. 🤷🏼♀️
you’re a bigot
