Perfect. haha. :)
Rob has a great ear that’s for sure..
@@Maxshade7and a big head
"It's like... a small weasel in a tube"
Definitely the best description of any musical equipment I've heard to date.
"Tube Weasel" actually sounds like a great name for a pedal.
Works just like the Spice Weasel... it knocks everything up a notch!
'Weasels big brother' killed me
That is exactly what I am going for with my sound, which is why I ordered one as soon as he said that
That was my favorite line also. With an English accent, it sounded like it could be a line from Spinal Tap haha.
I love Rob, but personally don't think shreddy riffs and fuzz-octaves go well together. I'd love to see Pete doin' some funky, groovy stuff for this fuzz-octave comparison.
Or some low-string riffs, a la Rival Sons, Fu Manchu, etc. I'm actually in the market for a fuzz-octave (never really looked at them before) and am leaning toward the Slash one. All the vids I've watched of that one sound really good, IMO.
@@johnwoods5140 if you're still searching, check out the Wampler fuzztration. Great versatility, and great octave sounds.
Thanks for the suggestion, but I ended up getting an MXR Sub Machine not too long after I posted that.
@@johnwoods5140 good choice! I love that pedal
cause he’s just arrogant as fuck, and would rather constantly display his technical competence as these demo videos are just echo chambers for him
Orange fur coat was awesome tho
Yeah I really liked it, dunno why Rob didn't like it
Miles Parker It is actually the one that i liked the most
I thought it was the best
Me too. 10 seconds into it and I was assuming it would win. Maybe it only sounds cool over the internet and not in a real room.
I loved that tone! real rock n roll sound. GOTTA buy one of these. KILLER sound!

this needs more likes,
I never get tired of the exploding coffee cup.
When I started this video my wife said “Jesus! I hear Lee’s voice more than yours luv! At least he talks to me” 😂😂😂
“Can you remove the modern sounding synthy octave?”
“I can try...”
*increases level of upper octave*
😂
Haha. He’s an interesting fellow
Octavia style pedals are my absolute favorite. There is nothing else like it. The weird overtones, the zippery gated feel, the way it tracks double stops and how it beefs up power chords, it's just such an unusual beast. I use mine to get a sitar-like sound out of a Tele bridge pickup.
I remember when they couldn't figure out what the "octavix" pedal was called in their budget pedal board video.
I'm surprised at how different they all sound. Some are really worlds apart. Really grateful for this shootout.
Half the tones rob didn't like, I loved cos that's what an octave fuzz sounds like slightly nasal, harsh etc. Like the wren and cuff sounds like a guitar attacking a pipe but it can be brilliant in the right context
That said the mxr la machine (and its big brother the sub machine) are great soinding pedals definately want one.
Think he got #1 bang on, though!
I totally agree with you.
I did think the wren sounded great!
*lee turns EQ knob down*
rob: "did you just darken it?"
lee: "nope"
what
Haha, he's really not very good with this, he also didn't think to turn off the 'mod' switch when Rob asked him to get rid of the horrible modern synth octave on the Monterey...
...well, he did turn it off at one point, for half a second ; )
He turned down the octave on the fur coat not the eq.
Noah Ortman
Which is also not very clever when the other is to compare Octave effects.
I think one or two of these pedals were the victim of operator error! However, I like simple pedals. More than three knobs and now it’s an effin job! Then your friend kicks the pedal board moving the gain hard and now the whole rig is sheboigen!
(Sp). I use a fuzz Star. I dig it but you have to dial it in. Sounds killer. I would like to see Pete on the guitar and maybe Rob dialing in choruses. Or delays or whatevs...but a variety of price points! I do like these blind vids. Oh and while I’m making demands like a bank robber use a good amp! Love the sheriff 44 clean. (Ok another good blind test, what rig takes pedals best in front or in line..etc).
He is a business owner ,not a musician
Neck pickup is a must when using Octave Fuzz Pedals. There's no rule, but it's part of what makes the effect magical. Some even turn their guitars tone down all the way. Try it... you'll see what I and others have discovered. I won't mention who some of the others are, but they talked in depth about this in publications that go back to the late 60's... for what it's worth.
The Octavix is really great, mostly if you pair it with a basic overdrive pedal (say a SD-1) and you can get a great fuzz tone , if you turn the octave knob down.
Should do this again with Bea, seeing as he is a fuzz aficionado
Yep!
You guys missed the horrible octave down! Surely I would have gotten a 5.150 on the octave fuzz scale then!
Robert Keeley in reality you did better than most of the competition, keep your head up big guy
Octave fuzz is the worst pedal generally for bad vs good sound. they have to be dialed in. Sorry Robert, star struck, couldn't think of anything intelligent to say!! Love your work man!! Pleased to make your acquaintance. (OMG I spoke to Robert Keeley :-D)!!!!
Andrew Trust me, the pleasure is mine! And, this video has been hugely inspiring and helped me apply a better focus to designing pedals. It was really great.
MattMattson yup, this video was a killer motivation. Many ideas after seeing this blind test. :-)
Hi Robert I just got your latest compressor + pedal and love it, especially the blend control
When are you guys going to do another "in-store" challenge? Maybe update the gigging rig for under £1,000 or something. Always found the in-store ones fun😊
The worse a fuzz pedal sounds, the better it is
For real, what's the fun of knowing exactly how a fuzz will respond?
then every fuzz pedal ever made wins. not a fan of fuzz or octave fuzz. I do like watching Chappers and Lee though so i stuck around for most of the video.
Agreed. Think they chose the boring ones i.e. normal sounding.
Yeah if a fuzz sounds good, it ain’t a good fuzz
umm nope.
I'm getting a EHX Octavix as a late gift for my birthday (April 28th) and this demonstration has solidified the decision ten fold.
Update: best purchase for the sound board for that year!
That was just a phenomenal fuzz demo and my ears completely agreed with yours! I was also shocked to hear how good the MXR Slash sounded. I have the Octavio and it is outstanding. Thank you Andertons for these videos. I've never shopped at Andertons but I will now!
These blind shootout vids are great! Keep em coming, guys!
Crazy how different these pedals sound from person to person. I think the Orange was my favorite of the lot.
Also, the editing on these videos is just phenomenal.
Orange sounds amazing
Great video. I own the MXR Slash ,Orange Fur Coat & Catalinbread Octapussy. I do think if Chappers spent more time with the Fur Coat by Orange he would like it better. Now I have to buy a Electro Harmonix Octavix which is very affordable. Can't wait to try it. Thanx guys !!!
I just bought an Octavix and I have to say it's huuuuuuuuge fun. Spitty, octavy ... and a huge array of tones hidden amongst the range of settings.
Hehe. Isn't the Octavix the pedal Rob has on his board? I remember it from one of the pedalboard challenges.
I preferred the Fur Coat.
Even as a guitarist, I watch this videos 25% for the product and 75% for the humour and the editing. The lopsided bit ruined me. Hahaha.
"Does it sound lopsided? That's better!"
Laughed so hard at that. Well played...
I wanted the Octavix after your mutant pedalboard challenge, but forgot about it. This stirred my memory and I wound up finding one used for 50. Woot!!
MXR La Machine sounds the most like the octave sound that Josh Homme uses (which traditionally has been a Fulltone Ultimate Octave)
These videos just make me happy, and the editing just gets better and better.
Totally agree with Chappers on every single comment made this time around. This was extremely helpful because I'm currently shopping for one of these. The only dropped ball is the exclusion of the Dunlop Octavio.
The brutal honesty is great! I think number 6 was my favorite.
I am so grateful for your shows. I came of age in the 80's, at a time when seemingly any pedal or piece of gear purchased was at minimum... "good" and "useful." As I've recently engaged a pedal board quest... I've been stupefied by how many pedals and pieces of gear out there are NOT good and or useful. I realize we all are not the same set of ears and heart... your shows have been invaluable helping me along the way. Thank you!
Just saying the words "very excited chocolate Labrador" put a fantastic image in my head. Just picturing that made me very happy.
Yeah, we've got some different tastes. That EHX Octavix sounded terrible to me, and I used to have one, and that Wren & Cuff was awesome. Plus, I think when you're doing any fuzz except a Big Muff you should probably start with the fuzz/gain maxed.
As always, great video. I do wish that you had included a Roger Mayer Octavia. He did invent the Octave Fuzz after all. All his pedals are made in the U.K. and I know Rob likes to support U.K. made guitar gear. Rob is also well known to love his Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Octave Fuzz so since Hendrix used the ones built by Mayer it seems like a good match for Rob. :)
I was thinking the exact same thing. I would love for you guys to give a rodger mayer a go. Iv been so curious about them but noone I trust has reviewed them!
If it helps, I love my Roger Mayer Axis, Octavia and Voodoo-1. The Axis is my favorite all time favorite fuzz. I have some demos on my channel.
I have to say I love these videos really interesting and really makes you step away from written reviews and promotions to really like pedals based on how they sound. Of course maybe some aren't shown in their best it's always the way but fun to watch and hear.
That Keeley pedal sounded class! Very Royal Blood-y
How Did We Get So Darksided?! ;-)
I liked the fuzz portion a lot. I agree that the octave wasn't really working with the riffy stuff Rob was playing. I think it had more to do with the limited time they had and not being set ideally than anything.
Lee strikes again
Liked the video... Fuzz is really the hardest pedal to find. They are usually either good for lead or rhythm. but rarely both. And then many are just good for nothing, or so unmanageable that they can't be wrangled even if the base sound may be good.
So it's good to see a roundup/comparison of these unruly little beasts.
Have to say, I pretty much agreed with Rob on every choice and score.
Thanks : )
Woah woah woah, where was the tuner in the chain and did it have a buffer? We may need a second referendum.
It obviously had to come in between the pedal and amp.
Alan Angel... good point
It seems amazing that all 3 of the final selection seemed to have pretty much the same voicing. Personally I would have picked the MXR Slash octave fuzz as that clearly has the most flexibility in the controls.
11:08 - "Weasel's big brother!", and Cap'n dutifully writes it down! Funniest, and most honest, video you two have done for a while - superb!
I love these videos but I expected the Mxr Hendrix Octavio, being as it's one of robs favorite pedals, would've been cool to see if he could spot it among the others
Bobby Glotzbach I recently got one, fantastic pedal
Why is Rob riffing on an octavia pedal? Analog octave technology doesn't really work well for polyphonic stuff.
But I feel like both Lee and Rob are not really big fuzz fanatics, so I get that.
Tell that to Electric Wizard! Fucken works!
You can 100% riff on an octave fuzz
Dude, I always use my octavia for riffing and tone bender for leads.
>can't riff on analog octave
>because it doesn't handle polyphonics
wait, what? I don't think any of those words mean what you think they mean
Can’t on an octave multiplexer can on a pog or octavia. Big Muff also. Single notes will sing the sweetest but with some touch chords will sound fine too. That’s why Chappers likes the more articulate ones for chordal playing. I do believe?!?!
If you have the switch on the "on" setting of the super hornet the octave is always in and you don't have to press the button. If its on "stinger" it only comes in when you press the momentary switch just to clear up any confusion about that pedal.
The blindfold/blind shootouts are my favorite anderton capt and chap style video!!! I love them, keep'em comin guys.
The Greer Super Hornet can be on all the time with the switch... OR you can have the switch off and hold it down for quick hits... a great pedal.. and much better sounding than the Captain tweaked it to be overall...
Half way through, and no matter what Rob thinks, I'm enjoying hearing the pedals as played through gear and player in one video.
Wow - I loved the Wren & Cuff!
"It's weasel's big brother!" Legitimately made me laugh so loud in the middle of work
I enjoyed all the ones Rob didn't, which is why I love these videos. Awesome getting the subjective opinion of another player and what they possibly hear.
Too bad you only used Octave Fuzzes. Would have loved to see some classics and modern Fuzzes in there, as well. Like a Muff, something russian and a Jupiter. However, amazing video! Thanks! Especially interesting: That Octavix was the Fuzz Rob picked back in the "Cheap pedal board challenge"!!! Where nobody was able to pronounce the pedal's name :D
Frank Meffert I *think* they did something similar with regular fuzzes a while back. Might be thinking of That Pedal Show.
Frank Meffert Yeah, that’d be cool :-)
I found those giant shootouts very helpful, because as a "customer" I don't have the money, nor the resources to do something like it myself. It made me purchase the Tone City Sweet Cream, for example. I mean who would have bought this right from the shelf?
Would have liked to see the Hendrix MXR Octavix
Another great video, but thought it was a bit tough on Rob when Lee was fiddling with the knobs - ooer missus!
I would love to see Rabea take part in choosing a distortion or fuzz pedal of his own!
Should do a Klon copy shootout
I think they did, Lee had to choose his favorite Klon clone a while ago.
Wampler Tumnus Deluxe for the win!
Catalinbread octapussy button in the middle is a attenuator, so it does not help to turn it clockwise if you want more juice and, rather the contrary
The pedal and guitar blindfolded kinda videos are soooo good
These shootout videos are fantastic, so helpful. please keep doing them!
An extremely enjoyable video with some of the best lines ever. I barely know what an octave fuzz is. I've got a Big Muff and that's about as much fuzz as I reckon I need. But then, that is the thing with this channel. It wins out on pure entertainment value alone, quite apart from how useful it often is. Great job!
Man can y'all imagine if we had Mick dialing in different fuzz pedals for Dan? Those two know their way around some fuzzy stuff more than they would like to admit I'm sure.
Orange Fur Coat was by far my favourite. I don't think the metal shreddy Rob thing is really what these pedals were made for! 🤷🏽♂️
Never thought I’d say this but I was diggin Chappers chops in this one!
I was literally shopping for fuzz pedals yesterday lmao im glad this vid came out before i actually bought one!
Long since out of production but the best for me is the Boss FZ-2. I spent so long spending so much on vintage fuzzes that just didn't hit the spot and went crazy when I heard the FZ-2 because it was *so damn right*. It was a powerful lesson in pedal snobbery: Boss can be fantastic.
Blind shootouts best shootouts, well done chaps, lots of fun, more please?
I don't think Lee is very good at dialing in tones.
yea + he didnt get how the switch on the Greer CHANGES the octave function from momentary to full time. of course its not "only momentary".. common sense man.
That Monterey octave was sick
it sounds like an organ with it on
Best fuzzes I've ever owned was a JHS Fuzz (John Hornby Skewes - yes, the original JHS) and a Colorsound Tonebender when I was a snotty kid - now look at how much Tonebenders go for! (I've checked the attic and it's not there) probably got trashed about the same time I trashed my original 60's SG in 1980 something after I'd sprayed it silver with car spray paint - OOPS..!!! No regrets though... :-)
Up next, RING MOD CHALLENGE!!!!
“It’s weasels big brother”, AH HA HA, I’m so glad I’ve missed this video as long as I have otherwise this night would not have this joy to it.
Just an idea guys. Octave fuzz is invariably 80% sounds bad 20% sounds good in tweakage per pedal. Maybe give the pedals to the test subject, let them set them up how they want them then shoot the shootout 3 months later when there is a chance the testei has forgotten enough about the pedals to be subjective. Hope you know where i'm coming from hahaha. Cheers guys!!
Captain Lee: *Turns down EQ*
Chappers: "Did you just darken it?"
Captain Lee: No
That was great guys. My favourite effect. My top 3 were different to Chappers but as Lee said it's one of the most subjective effects.
I’m glad you chose this sub genre of pedal. I have been using 2 separate pedals for years and would love to combine them. This will give me a good starting point for testing in the future!
octave fuzzes are not the same thing as an octave pedal and a fuzz pedal.
I liked the "KEELEY" the most, however I possess "EHX", "BOSS", and a few other fuzz boxes, and I have to say my fave 2 are "BIG MUFF"(wicker version), and the "JOYO VOODOO OCTAVE", which is an amazing pedal for the money !!!.
I’ve just bought a Keeley Monterey and it’s a kick ass pedal! Has a little bit of everything you need, kinda like a multi fx unit that doesn’t suck.
The track at the end…..SUPERB 🔥 🤣
These are some of your best series of videos for ages
The Octavix was also Rob' s favorite pedal when you guys did a bargain pedalboard challenge a couple years ago and he just grabbed 3 EHX pedals for his. It is pretty awesome sounding, though I did like the Orange Fur Coat as well. Pretty cool video!
I don't know how it sounded in the room, but the fur coat was my favorite
I'd love to see Rabea do this, I know he is a huge fan of fuzzy, meaty tone
The ending was so good, that could be a little jingle for many half time shows
I bought a Slash fuzz/octave pedal. I do not use it much. I need to use a noise suppressor. I like the way MXR has put a real sting into these things. I think I only paid 100.00 US $ for it used
Gotta do it again, but include a Fulltone Octafuzz. It's a classic!
Wow that Slash fuzz totally catches his sound. Awesome pedal
Brilliant work by Rory at the end, you should make full on music videos with just outtakes from Chappers and Captain videos.
Thanks 4 this☝🏾... EHX Octavix purchased! Great format of these fuzz oct demos. The EHX sounds the best IMHO... some like the Fur coat doe...🤷🏾♂️ gotta grab what u like
The editing is on point again, love the little remix at the end
I loved all the ones rob hated.
Justin Brantley That's what she... Never mind.
I actually agreed with him on almost every one and even the exact score haha.
I liked the fur coat
If it sounds good, it ain’t a good fuzz pedal
@@beanzmeanzheinz1525 wow what a stupid thing to say
I'm really happy that I saw this shootout after I just purchased the Octavix :D
Great fun!! Octave fuzz boxes can be really difficult to dial in, especially those with a separate octave foot switch. Fuzz really does comes down to personal preference and whether your stacking it with other effects.✌🏻🎸😁
I am glad they did a Classic Vibe in that color scheme. fall 2019
Love the sub-octave fuzz like MXR Slash. Great playing!
I own the slash octave fuzz and I use it with a talk box for a solo and it’s such a great pedal. But the La Machine and Octavix sounded great as well😄
Orange Fur Coat awesome!!
IMHO, the MXR Slash was the only one wherewith you could actually hear that it was a strat going into it. A+
