Terry -- i know in one of your videos you must have talked about Department S (ITV, late 1960's -- Brit 'Man-From-Uncle' style show) -- because I definitely remember seeing the 'Mod' Peter Wyngarde (why couldn't *I* look like that?!?!?!) in one of your videos. I found some episodes 'remastered' (I think ripped from the all-inclusive BluRay release) on RUclips and I am watching Season 1, Episode 1 -- so far it has that great late 1960's TV-spy-show vibe along with great ITV music. Not bad!
I actually caught both of these movies in the theatre. These movies are great fun, but Gods of Egypt is better. A Scottish man takes over ancient Egypt from an Australian man and no one makes any effort to disguise their accents. It's really wonderful!
y'all making me think this is worth a second look! though come to think of it I'm probably confusing this with "Prince of Persia" with Jake Gyllenhaal. why? I'm not sure!
I love the Great Wall movie. The best film about the great wall was once on our TV. It consisted of a drone following the whole length of the wall with live sound, but no commentary. From time to time the part of the wall in view would have identification and a little history with notes on-screen It is really engaging. Hypnotizing.
I saw "The Great Wall" when it first came to the movie channels. At the time there were a bunch of harpies screeching about cultural appropriation and whitewashing. The movie was far from that. The cast was overwhelmingly Chinese, which makes sense considering it was made in China, and about China. It featured "I'm Matt Damon" as the Hollywood selling point. All of this made sense in terms of production and in relation to the story they were telling. It was so much more palatable than typical Hollywood/China productions that feature Americans and Europeans running around a sanitized Chinese city after dark.
Will look up a copy of both next trawl through the local thrift stores. A bit of silly adventure fun is definitely needed now. (And no, attacking a powerful and advanced second tier non-european country is not an adventure. Neo-cons delenda est!) Anyway, with the quick cut editing style used in your videos, did you ever consider some internal fun by switching some bit of costume between cuts? Such as different hats every once in a while? The 'regulars' would definitely catch it and approve. Enjoy summer! Keep on staying safe!
I watched the Gods of Egypt years ago. At first I couldn't stand it but then I looked at it as an Egyptian version of Rodger Zelanzy's Lord of Light, turned off my mind, and enjoyed the ride.
In my own comment I just mentioned that Proyas promised a big 'reveal' in the sequel (which of course never eventuated) and my theory is that it would turn out that the 'Gods' were actually like the superpowered alien humans in Lord of Light...
Nice Video Terry. I have a soft spot for Van Helsing with Hugh Jackman. The effects just don't hold up. but it's just dumb fun. I enjoyed watching Richard Roxburgh and David Wenham hamming it up. I also on a personal note, it was around the first time I bought a decent surround sound set up so I have fond memories of pumping up the volume
Terry thanks for the ideas for a distraction. I have always been a mythology fan, some of my favorite times in history class was when we would study ancient civilizations mythology. That is probably why I like Harryhausen classics like Jason and the Argonauts and Class of the Titans. Please keep up the good work I need four more years of good distractions.
With respect to "The Great Wall", I also thought Ramin Djawadi's score was a perfect match for it. Melodic, propulsive, inventive, especially in terms of its arrangements blending both Western symphonic and traditional Eastern influences in its instrumentation. Definitely a world apart from what he'd composed and what I was used to hearing in his "Game Of Thrones" music.
I saw the Great Wall on streaming and I liked it. Matt Damon and Pedro Pascal do the "buddy" thing very well. It was colorful and fun. Will look for Gods of Egypt, although Gerard Butler gives me a headache. Thanks, Terry.
The trailer was enough to turn me off 'Gods of Egypt'. - Judging a book by its cover? Yes, probably. But after 'The Crow,' the excellent 'Knowing' and one of my all time favourite movies, ' Dark City,' I saw 'I Robot', hated it (being a fan of Asimov, I expected much better) and therefore my motivation to see Gods of Egypt faded like the setting sun. You're right, of course, movie producers/directors need to take criticism on the chin, hopefully learn something and move on. Cheers Terry.
I stumbled upon 'The Great Wall' by accident and was glad I had. I understand it boasts the largest cast of any movie, as all those extras were actual people as opposed to CGI. Do you know anything about that?
'Great Wall' always appealed to me more than 'Gods Of Egypt' - the trailer for the former was spectacular, and, most importantly, gave nothing away, simply because the story, as it was, was not well known to western audiences. GOE, on the other hand was based on well known stories, and veered quite a bit from the source material, which has only been around for about 4000 years. Of course, the violent castration and hacking up of Osiris probably would have put some people off, so I can see why it was altered😂. Set, being the god of darkness and destruction, is a similar deity to Loki - but definitely not a trickster - he's just a complete bastard. Doctor Who's Sutekh is Set, and a quote of his sums the character up perfectly: "Where I walk, I leave dust and darkness. I find that good."

@@terrytalksmovies - didn't you talk about David McGillivray's book DOING RUDE THINGS on your podcast or here once? I know he wrote a lot for Walker in the Seventies, and I think Walker's films are underrated cult classics. COMMANDO CODY: SKY MARSHAL OF THE UNIVERSE is pretty hilarious in that the actor playing Cody never takes his domino mask off the entire time! Apparently the producers felt that they could replace him with another actor in future versions if he got greedy or something. That didn't happen (they just replaced the actor anyway in ZOMBIES OF THE STRATOSPHERE!), but William Schallert disappears after three episodes and is replaced by Richard Crane, with no explanation given! The series had a break between the first three episodes (done originally as a pilot for a television serial) and the remaining nine, and between them they shot ZOMBIES.... All I can find about Schallert's disappearance is "he was no longer available"....

I've seen the Pete Walker movies. That bloke was extreme for British cinema at the time.
The Rocketman serials are such fun.
Didn't review Idiotcracy ? Too soon. Gods of Egypt I liked, not mind-blowing but a decent sit back, munch some popcorn film, but anything set in Egypt or Roman Empire, then I'll give it a go.
Idiocracy is low hanging fruit. A good satire but every idiot says 'idiocracy is a documentary' like that adds anything to the discussion.
@@terrytalksmovies I like Office Space more but also co-opted by memes. Doesn't ruin it for me.
