A great comment and reminder from Dan that the physical media is still needed for your favorites. I suspect most people don’t know how often streaming services remove titles.
I was 11 years old when I saw Raiders on the theater. My father dragged me kicking and screaming to go see it because he knew it was going to be awesome but in my mind, Harrison Ford was Han Solo and this movie about an archeologist just sounded so lame. When I left the theater, I was absolutely floored by how amazing this movie was and to this very day, it remains my #1, all time favorite film (and I too own my own Fedora and whip!). Thanks for making this video Dan! On a side note, my wife and I are such fans of this movie we name two of our dogs Marcus and Brodie. :)
Totally with you about the 2nd best Indy film - I too adored Temple of Doom, and was underwhelmed by Last Crusade. I think it was partly my age, and partly that Last Crusade wasn’t as bold or imaginative. Great video as always!
Raiders remains in my top 10 to this day, being 11 in '81, I dragged as many people as I could to see it over a dozen times at the theatre (which btw was at the West Palm Beach Mall Cinema Theatre for 14 months, and no other movie held that record) I still have much of the "memorabilia" including the books, Poster, Soundtrack, Time/Newsweek articles, Starlog articles, the screenplay, Topps movie cards, Raiders of the lost Ark The movie on record, and the Film Fantasy Yearbook complete with the image of Toht's melting face on the cover. Great memories.
Hey Dan. Just wanted to say that I really appreciate all the effort you go in making these videos. I also really like that you approach each one with a standard 'formula' in terms of delivery and order of subject matter etc - I think this really works well, and I know what I am going to get each and every time - nice job! I can't agree more strongly with you on your take on 'practical' visual effects vs. CGI and original vs re-imaginings - albeit I did enjoy both the 'modern' versions of Battlestar Galactica and Lost in Space. Excuse my presumption, but I have an idea for a topic: memorable movie Matte Paintings and the artists behind them. I just love a great matte painting! Finally - Dick Tufeld would have to be smiling down from Alpha Centauri with the impersonations - keep them coming!
I still believe that the HERO ark of the covenant for this movie is still one of the most valuable props of any movie in history. Marilyn Monroe's movie dress sold for $4.6 million in 2011. I think if the Ark was put up for auction, the winning bid might be close to this. Great video as usual Dan.
Dan you mentioned the Antiques Roadshow, are you aware of the Entertainment Special episode? It aired on the 31st Dec 2017 from Elstree Studios. A guy who used to be a scenic painter at the studios walked in with Darth Vader's mask from the first film, the axe from The Shining and THE HEAD OF THE STAFF OF RA!!!! All saved from the skip / dumpster.
MAN! Another winner of a show! And one of my top five favorite movies! I would love to know what happened to the book that Indiana thumbed through with the g men when he described the ark. And what may have happened to the headpiece to the staff of Ra. Anyway, GREAT SHOW! Don’t EVER give it up Dan! I would have to jump out of a zeppelin over Germany!
I still remember my first viewing of Raiders in my local cinema. It was playing in a double feature with something - I forget what as I was just captivated with Raiders. I had heard about it because my Mom came back from a trip visiting a friend in California and had seen it and told me to watch it. I too went around for quite some time in an old fedora my grandfather had…I wore it all the time. And I am with you Dan…my favorite sequel has always been Temple of Doom as well. The look and feel of that film was just the most like Raiders to me. Crusade was good, but did feel like they went to comic due to the criticism over Temple. I know not a popular opinion, but just my own personal one. Another wonderful video full of a lot of great nostalgia Dan. 🙏
I'm in the UK and I was 7 when I first saw Raiders at a cinema in London, it was a double feature with Battle Beyond the Stars, I have loved both films since.
Thank you for this awesome video. As a sidenote about the influence of the Raider March, it is sometimes played as background music in a small supermarket near my home in Japan.
The ending with Marion and Indiana walking down the stairs, wasn’t in the script, Marcia Lucas yelled at Spielberg telling him, you have to show both of them together at the end , especially after they both survived the Ark’s punishment, and Spielberg did what he was told😂 INTENSELY MEMORABLE 🎉
Nice one Dan as always. i have a copy of the fertility idol given to me by one of my customers, haha that dose not sound right . I work as a driver and was collecting a customers vehicle from their house and i noticed they had this statue on there window. So i knocked on the door and said to my customer, Indy fashion "It belongs in a museum!" he laughed and said you are the only person who recognised this so you can have it. So i am the proud owner of a Fertility Idle (:
Love your channel. Brings back many memories. I was born in Syracuse, then moved to Liverpool NY when I got married. Saw many a film at Cinema North, the Palace theater and Westhill Theater which was closest to my house. The last time I was there as a young adult the roof was leaking and falling down so they had sections roped off you could not sit in do to falling debris. My first date with my wife was at the Hollywood theater in Mattydale were my soon to be girlfriend then wife took me to see the Rocky Horror Picture show. I thought “what have I gotten myself into?” 37 years together and still going strong. Keep these videos coming. Thanks for the memories.
My Theory: Kathleen Kennedy was assistant (PA, Gofer, D-Girl) for Spielberg for many years. The reason she has not been fired and banished from Hollywood after all her disastrous films and loss of Billions... she has some serious dirt on Spielberg...and probably others. She is blackmailing them all to release the dirt if they ever fire her. I can't come up with any other rational explanation for how she still has a job.
Yea, and he just had to go and speak the name that should NEVER be spoken, which is something as forbidden as looking into the ark, so if a plague befalls his family and he has to watch his own children melt in front of him he brought it on himself.
I know….all the films she produced have been total flops…E.T, Schindler’s List, The Sixth Sense, Signs, Twister, Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, etc. etc. What a hack!
Thanks again, Dan. Another great video. Sometimes we forget about the films that shape our view of the world. And thank goodness you're around to remind us of those days. Now, where is my Raiders blu-ray...
Back in 1988 or 1989, I went to the Marin County Fair which was a few miles from Lucasfilm Ranch and they had quite a few props, models, and costumes from the Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies. The Ark of the Covenant was on display and the gold paint was peeling very bad but it still looked great. They had several models including the Star Destroyer models, Millenium Falcon models, Luke's landspeeder, Darth Vader and Boba Fett costumes, and a photo op area with Artoo and Threepio setup along with Lucasfilm folks to answer questions, take your pictures, and so forth. It was about a three hour wait to get inside but well worth it. I would love to see it all again.
I said during your update on this upcoming video that even though these movies aren’t among my favourites of all time they are solid movies that I would happily watch anytime. Movies like this, Bond and the star wars movies came from a time before streaming and before VCR’s were a thing for most people. When these movies came on TV you had to plan your schedule around being able to see them… because they were worth seeing.
This one of greatest movie ever made in my opinion.Love this movie after I saw it I asked my parents to get me a bullwhip and they got me one. Later when I got older I got a Dave Morgan whip and I still have it. Great video Dan .

As always, excellent overview. I got to see Raiders of the Lost Ark on its opening weekend. I walked to a remote location of Showcase Cinemas, and caught the midnight showing. It was incredible. Todt, and Dietrich’s face melter was fresh in my mind on the way back down that cold, dark hill. I admit to not warming to Williams’ soundtrack until years later, although I was substantially impressed by the track labeled Miracle of the Ark.
I teared up Dan... I watched this movie at least 200 times. As a13 years old this showed at a $1.00 movie theater within walking distance from my home and watched this every day for over a month and at other theaters as well. This You Tube was incredible, and I watched it with several of my childhood friends. Perhaps a cult classic minus Ford, but unlikely to spawn any sequels with Selleck in the role [for example]. Same way Back to the Future would have only achieved cult status with Eric Stoltz in Marty McFly role, but not go on to phenomenon status

I think I have the Raiders box sets in all their formats; gotta change with the times lol!
When society collapses and there's no internet or streaming, all us blu ray and DVD collectors will be good
@@fierro7771 We shall have the last laugh indeed!
Another great watch Dan - thanks for all the time & talent it took to put this together dude!
It was worth the wait for another excellent view into one of my favorite movies!! Thank you!!
Omg that woman has been a menace for decades before the Star Wars sequel movies.
RIP 🪦 Star Wars 1977-2012
Yea, and he just had to go and speak the name that should NEVER be spoken, which is something as forbidden as looking into the ark, so if a plague befalls his family and he has to watch his own children melt in front of him he brought it on himself.
KK...living proof Chewbacca had sex with Darth Vader.
I know….all the films she produced have been total flops…E.T, Schindler’s List, The Sixth Sense, Signs, Twister, Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, etc. etc. What a hack!
Thanks Dan, one of my all time favourites and so good that you mention the importance of physical media, qualitys everything 👌
Extended Director's cut! All I want for Christmas...
Oh, and the Temple of Doom DC..... oh, and Last Crusade DC. But that'll do ....
Thanks again, Dan. Another great video. Sometimes we forget about the films that shape our view of the world. And thank goodness you're around to remind us of those days. Now, where is my Raiders blu-ray...
Fantastic review thank you very much
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for this Dan. I love this movie. Can't wait for your next one.
Henry Jones Junior. We named the dog Indiana.
and George Lucas's dog was called Indiana, and was the inspiration for Chewbacca
600lb dog with a weird bark?
@@clbcl5 😂😂🤣
I’ve got fond memories of that dog…..
Fully agree with your ranking of the movies!
Great video
Yes i did enjoy this video.
Really great content that you put together on this film
Thank you Dan
I concur with your assessment although the original is my fav. The Dial of Destiny was just kind of sad on several levels.
You are are one of the few weekly event I look forward to. I never had the self-confidence to wear a fedora but I did play with homemade whips. Thank you again for another great episode.
I liked this video before I started watching it. One of my favorite films ever..
We all agree with you 100% on your analysis of the other movies except for The Dial of Destiny we LOVED that movie and was hoping for a sequel... Do you believe that? hahahahahahah Thank you so much Dan your channel is such a breath of fresh air.
Thanks so much for your kind words! It's truly awesome to know the video was such a hit with you and your friends :) Cheers, Dan
BC TV plays Lost in Space & Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea Saturday nights. I now have a renewed appreciation for them after watching your work. I was even paying attention to the Robots lights.
Thanks Dan ✌️👽
One of the flying spirits from the opening of the Ark was featured over on Adam Savage tested this week along with Beloq's ceremonial staff also from the same scene (going to auction).
Another great video, Dan. Didn't expect anything less.
Herbert Johnson also gave John Steed his bowler, at least according to Patrick McNee, who I had the pleasure of interviewing for Phantom of the Movies Videoscope.
HUGE fan of The Avengers!
You sir have a great youtube channel and I hope it just grows more each day for you!👍👍
Nice segment, Dan. These films were an homage to H. Rider Haggard’s great series of novels based on the adventures of Alan Quartermain.
Check out Secret of the Incas.
Great job Dan! This movie is in my top 5 of all time. Keep up the awesome work and I'll keep watching.
I think you have great taste but I am a Last Crusade fan for #2. Great episode as usual!! Have fun
Another home run Dan! Love your channel. You always do a amazing job getting the info on the movies and the props. And I have to say I really like that as you're coming to the end of your video, you use the music from lost in space.
You made me remember the catch phrase of temple of Doom the man with the hat is back.great movies.
Hey Dan! Fantastic episode of MM&M! Raiders has been on my top 10 for a long time. You touched on all the details in your deep dive and I really appreciate the focus on detail that you share with us.
Thanks for watching, and for the kind words! Cheers, Dan
Be sure to catch the Raiders of the Lost Ark show at Disney World. They recreate the plane scene where Indy fights the German mechanic.
Real great episode...always love all the rare pics and behind the scenes trivia and off course the props and models you regale us with...thanks Dan....can't wait for the next video. ❤
Hi Dan. Please do a deep dive into the Charlton Heston 1954 movie, Secret of the Incas from which the Indiana Jones movies originated.
Hey, great suggestion! Adding to my EXTREMELY long list of future videos :) Cheers, Dan
@@MoviesMusicMonstersyou won’t be disappointed!
@@MoviesMusicMonsters There were two TV shows that were inspired by Raiders also called "Tales of the Gold Monkey" in 1982 on CBS based off a 1939 Howard Hawks movie called "Only Angels Have Wings" and "Bring 'Em Back Alive" in 1982 on ABC which was based on real life explorer trapper Frank Buck in the 1930s. I know about the Young Indiana Jones TV series also but it was a prequel to the Indiana Jones movies whereas the two others I mentioned were only inspired by Raiders' popularity.
I was going to mention it too. It definitely was an influence
Another great show Dan about one of the greatest TRILOGIES of all times. From a child I have always loved the Saturday morning matinee adventure and swashbuckling movies; with one bound and a crushing punch he was free; flashing blade sword fights a la Errol Flynn in the Adventures Of Robin Hood and Zorro. Bliss.
Thank you john williams for getting me to listen and like symphonic music.❤
Wow that bit at the end of the film with the faces melting is a proper class scene, really good special effects!
16:29 And you were doing so well, Dan. The asking price at auction is £24,995 which is in _pounds_ that comes to about $32,297.29
No words to describe how happy you make us today, what an awesome episode! Dan thanks so much for your dedication. Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of my all time favorite.
Steve Martin? Well EXCUUUUSE MMMEEEE.
Thank you 🙏 so much Dan!!! This was wonderful!!!
And just a note: me and my sister sneaked out of the house back in 77 to watch Star Wars 4 more separate times!
I don’t know why but it made it even more exciting !!!! For Reiders me and my dad I’m sure we saw it at the movies at least twice!
I love the segment on the auctions! Is fun to know how much they fetched or what kind of fate the props had!
Thank you again🙏👍🤩
Well done. Cal you do the film 'They Live' please ?
Part of my EXTREMELY long list of future videos :) Cheers, Dan
Thank you for the positive comment on physical media. Great epsiode on this film. I agree about what someone said about you being like Starlog magazine. We need to deem you Mr. Starlog. We really thank you for all of this great content that we all grew up with.
George was like, 'Hey, she's real annoying and doesn't listen, let's put her in charge!!!'
Indeed. Nice one George🙄
My favourite movie. Ever. Great episode thank you 😊
In an episode of Magnum PI they did a spoof of raiders of the Lost ark called raiders of the Lost art very funny
Thanks Dan!! Once again another fantastic video! I believe the hero prop Ark was at Disney World Hollywood Studios at one time. It was on display in the que line for the, Great Movie Ride attraction.
you should play the new Indiana Jones video game that is coming out in a few days. It will make you feel like your Indy and the actor that voiced him sounds exactly like Harrison Ford.
Misty-eyed standing ovation from Dana Point. We especially enjoyed seeing those photos of you as a young movie fan. Thank you🥹
I'm strumming my Ovation and watching the best show on RUclips Dan.
Playing my Les Paul and doing the same.
@jstnxprsn Ha! Dan has a really nice Ovation. There's not too many of them around anymore. So, I strum mine in honor. Happy strumming, my friend.
Still love watching it at Christmas now.
The music in this film makes such an impact on the senses
Great episode Dan👍
Best movie ever made.
Very enjoyable video Dan,thanks very much. I think we need Dr Smith to tell B9 to' Be silent ,ninny!'
Without Harrison Ford Raiders would be a B Movie
Perhaps a cult classic minus Ford, but unlikely to spawn any sequels with Selleck in the role [for example].
Same way Back to the Future would have only achieved cult status with Eric Stoltz in Marty McFly role, but not go on to phenomenon status
One of your best yet!! Thank you!!
Sent to Warehouse 13....
Didn't you watch the end of the show???
Ahh Dan… stirring up the memory ghosts for me yet again! Keep ‘em coming!
I would love to have that ark in my house and just let people try and figure out what it is.
What house? You name literally says Apartment. LMFAO I'd be worried about accidentally melting the housekeeper's face.
I probably would get the housekeeper a welder’s hood. Too nice an artifact to keep in the apartment too many bodies buried there anyway.
Thank you Dan for this deep dive. Raiders is my all time favorite film. I had just lost my mother at the age of 12 when this movie was released in Cinemas back in 81. It literally gave me hope and joy when i had none. Motion pictures released in the 80s are my sanctuary and reminder of the greatest era of my life.
Thank you again.
"Its not the years honey, its the mileage "❤
I thought crystal skull I like it very much. The last Crusade was great I didn’t think much of the temple of doom. I enjoyed it, but not like the others.
Thanks Dan like always you’re the man with the master plan!
