It's also happened to Boeing. They no longer make good aircraft or treat their (factory floor) employees well, but everything is just fine for the executives and the shareholders. Until the National Transportation Safety Board summons them and starts asking awkward questions...

Oz, I own a board game store in Canada and do my best to encourage in person experience. Social life. I do meet up groups 3 or 4 days a week because I'm a huge extrovert. But society is melting away. So many people under 50 years have no social life. No social skills. And if they aren't a content creator, the are a content consumer. En mass. People don't look eachother in the eyes any more. And most life a diminished life of screen time. Thank you for sharing this video. @@kablah777 Totally agree for phone, there the homepage is definetely full of shorts. The phone app is just complete shit overall. For other platforms this is not true. On PC and TV the homepage shows only one row of shorts and you have to scroll a fair bit until it shows up. I guess youtube is just adjusting to the market. When people are on their phone, the majority will choose short from content. No one is going to watch a 90 minute documentary about the Apollo missions while they are sitting on the shitter or waiting for the train. If youtube doesn't offer short form content on phones the users will go back to instagram and tiktok. And that would be a significant number, because smartphones are the most used devices. Obviously yt wants a slice of that pie. But I agree in the sense that the yt homepage should not contain shorts. There is a tab specifically for shorts at the bottom. So no need to have them on the homepage too. And remember, yt are still the only ones who offer high quality, long form, horizontal content. (I hope it stays that way, because yt has some really, really high quality creators) Don't get me wrong though, I'M ALL AGAINST THE ADDICTIVENESS OF DOOM SCROLLING. I would have absolutely no problem with short form content in general being banned. But for different reasons: tiktoks, reels and shorts do spread an incredible amount of lies and misinformation on every topic you could think of. They are one of the main reasons the gap between left and right in Europe and the U.S. is getting bigger and bigger. This might sound very extreme, but sadly, it's reality. Until there is some sort of quality control, this form of content will endanger the western world in general. Chinese and russian governments are very restrictive on what content they allow on these platforms (if they allow these platforms at all) while using the unregulatedness of the western world to spread misinformation and thus hate and diversion. Russian and chinese bot and troll farms are no fairy tales. They are a reality and they use social media and specifically short form content to manipulate us.
Yeah nah yeah. My income has dropped to an amount not worth the effort. RUclips treats its creators amazingly badly. It paid me not one penny for any of my 'shorts' which it forced me to make, and now Facebook is happily showing my videos to millions of viewers and has not paid me a single penny, claiming that I have violated its rules , but not telling me which rules, so there is nothing I can do about it. I can't have done anything very serious, else it would not be happy to use my videos so much on its site. Even if I could sort this out, by the time I did, all my videos there would be past their peaks of views. I cannot contact a human at either organisation.

yeah, the personalised starting page from youtube 5 years ago was amazing but its only been downhill from there. Also wtf is going on with the search function, used it again recently and you cant find shit anymore

Its just another trick to make you click more and more trying to find something worthy to watch. 😠 They also rig it as default so you dont have to click on a vid so you count up a click rate just by scrolling. Cursor passes over a thumbnail counts as a view. Unless you make the effort to turn that default function off.
I agree - I struggle to get the notifications for stuff I want, and watch often - it drops off to be replaced by shit, and I just watch much less RUclips now as a result.

One thing I’ve noticed with RUclips creators I subscribe to lately. They either put out shorts, which I don’t like watching, that are usually clips of older videos, or they put out 2-4 hour streams that I don’t have time to sit and watch. 5,10,30 minute videos are what I’m here for. I’ve noticed that since I don’t click on shorts or ridiculously long videos I’ve started to get less and less notifications from channels I’m subscribed to even with notifications turned on. Some I even thought were dead channels because I’ve seen nothing from them only to actually click on them in my subscriptions and find out they have posted tons of stuff but they are either shorts or long ass streams. Creators are shooting themselves in the foot by changing their formats, content, or styles. If you continue to do you Ozzy man I will be here. However, I’m not the type to follow to a new platform because I just can’t be bothered. Keep uploading to RUclips and I’ll watch it all.
That explains so much about why my notifications seem so lacking these days. I'm on FB but recently uninstalled from my phone due to being swamped with adverts, thinly veiled polarised political shit and reels (which still come back however many times you switch them off).
There are extensions to disable them! I watch youtube on mobile with the kiwi brower and some ublock origins filterng to get rid of them. Its not as nice as using the app of course, but its easily worth it
I'm a teacher. Kids don't read anymore. They want fast information. Fast videos. Fast everything. They barely learn how to think for themselves. They follow trends that are damaging. They think views and likes have meaning on TikTok until I show them how easy it is to get a following on there. It's sad.
its a new thing, people are going to abuse it. School is too inefficient, teachers need to deliver information succinctly. Stop forcing kids write 1000 words essays that can be done in 100-300 words. The new challenge is to sieve through mountains of information and identify info with clean creditable source.

It's sad, because RUclips used to be so much better - you could look up a recipe or carpentry advice, or support animal rights organisations or watch old music videos or take a break with genuine comedians doing videos perfect for lunchtime distraction ( like Ozzyman!). Now I feel it's changed, and this was a great explanation of why.... As to the rest, I do not have tiktok or Instagram on my phone. I keep youtube history off, and use a completely blank email for youtube to prevent any suggestions, data collection, etc, because otherwise I get shorts popping up, which I find disturbing. But see, I was raised by hippies who refused us television and taught us to read. So I had the anti-massmedia gene already. I refused my kids smartphones until age 16, and trained them to regard pointless social media as just that - pointless. Now they're adults, one abstains entirely, the other just has an insta for their art. The web was supposed to democratize media. Now it's just handed over control of our social and cultural lives to algorithms, and that's...terrifying.

I'm not one to complain about inevitable change and technological advancement. But Tiktok (plus YT shorts, App games, or any similar platform) isn't "content," it's a vehicle for psychological addiction, and becomes no different than substance abuse.
I have resisted joining TikTok for years and I still haven't. I mean what can a viewer even get from a 15 second video? Nothing. The reason I joined YT almost 18 years ago was to learn and you learn and get nothing from short form content. Its a total waste of time but now YT is DEAD SET on short-form BS. There's a real world right outside my door that's been going on for 13.8 billion years. That's what I call long-form content and its far more rewarding than swiping away your entire life doing and creating nothing.

If THAT is the generation that is starting to become disillusioned with the modus opirandi of online mental manipulation, it really deserves being reassessed and adjusted. And the data collection and information reconnaissance programmed within modern social media is also becoming a problem fro privacy. The problem is also that no new creator platforms that are fair to creators make it as RUclips, TikTok and Meta keep drowning them out with trying their damnest to hold a monopoly over online content consumption.

I completely agree with you. The RUclips algorithm is atrocious. I watch 1 video from a channel I'm not subbed to and then my recommended feed is 80% that persons channel which after a few days really pisses me off so I hit the "do not recommend channel" button
I don’t see Ozzy Man as a creator. He’s a curator or aggregator of fail or dude perfect vids to me. He’s like the “this is your daily dose of internet guy”. I see that he also doesn’t pop up as much anymore. In short, I think the term RUclips creator is a real catch all phrase which often doesn’t involve much creating. The algorithm is broken and there’s far too many grifters on here. I do not include Ozzy Man in this.
@shalashaska615 his latest endeavor was more of an aggregator. However, his voiceovers definitely do add something to the videos. Somebody has to write those jokes and that script. So I do see him as a creator in some sense, even if the video when shot is not his. I don't even know how those channels where someone steals somebody else's content, particularly with animal videos, even survive

I also mean that there are TikTok length videos here on RUclips that are supposedly "reactions" , and they are just stealing someone else's video, and putting their face in the corner. Absolutely no value added to someone else's video at all. I follow an animal sanctuary, so I'm always very wary of this sort of thing, making sure ther content or another couple of vloggers' that I know doesn't appear on somebody else's "channel"
The problem with tiktok is it keeps showing videos it wants you to see. I can't even have a discussion with my brother anymore because he gets all his information from tiktok and it keeps showing him specific things the tiktok algorithm wants him to see. He doesn't have a wide enough view of the world to even have a discussion about issues in the world. It's frustrating....
TikTok actually works as a fruit machine to create addiction. A scroll is easier than a click and as you scroll. The algorithm will on purpose show you videos you don’t want to see to give you a great feeling when you hit a video you will want to see. So like every 10 (as example) you get to see 3 winners, 4 maybe and 2-3 uninteresting.
It's called confirmation bias, people used to have to look for content that suited their mindset, and would occasionally find a differing view that might enlighten them to the actual complexity of an event. Then they just applied algorithms that did the searching for you, add that to short content format and even the most one eyed now has no need to do any effort. No longer will a punter accidentally see an opposing view that sew a seed of nuance. Except when they actively go on to repeat the garbage they have fed on. The zombie apocalypse is here already, just not like the movies script it.
I should add that my brother is a great person. I love hanging out with him, he's s an amazing dad and person and even though we're 12 years apart in age, we are good friends. He's a better person than I am. He is just young enough to get sucked into this garbage while I'm old enough to remember getting the newspaper every day as an adult... 😂 So I'm old old.
I have TikTok. I watched a few videos on it but I just don't become addicted. The videos it shows me bore me. It also looks so obsessed with unrealistic beauty standards and stuff, that I just become disgusted.
I stopped using all social media two months ago and,I'm loving that my attention span is working oul the atrophy that was settling in. I limit my YT use as well, and my love of my local library has been reinvigorated. I can't recommend stopping social media - or taking a theee month break at least. It's frustrating and so rude when visiting someone and they keep looking at their phone, but I try to talk about funny and/or embarrassingly funny personal stories that'll grab their attention and make eye contact again 😊

As a RUclips content creator, I feel it. Just 2 years ago you could make content for yourself that you thought was funny and helpful. That isn't the case any longer. Fighting the algorithm is my full time job now.

Brother. I began getting deeply involved with social media sites in 2002, even before MySpace, so I have seen the continuous dumbification of society online. It makes me feel old to be that guy that says "things were better back in my day," BUT THEY WERE, OBJECTIVELY. I get sad when i see how intelligent chatters get drowned out on Twitch or youtube chat in a sea of Omegalols, or get outright banned because some young brainrot mod misunderstands or confuses the context of 1 chat message. The intelligent communicators get thinned out, leaving behind only the emoter horde. The last time I saw anyone champion Twitter as a platform was around 2011/2012, when it was truely a time based timeline, and not an algorithm based one. Where lucky (or strategically) timed posts meant anyone's posts could be seen equally, not just the ones that paid most or have been around since the beginning. New accounts could thrive on the merit of their content. Tech just seems to be falling apart, because the hackers that originally built it want nothing to do with it, and the sales people that run it have it no idea what they are doing or what real users actually want.
I'm 39 and I've been with ya since Facebook was actually a thing. Haven't reactivated it in forever but I was glad to find you here years ago. Much love Ozzy Man. I'll forever be a fan and subscriber to YOUR channel.

These algorithms are disgusting. My stream is constantly flooded with crap videos that have zero substance, yet there are tons of great videos with substance that I'll never see.
I'm back to buying CDs because I'm pissed off with music streaming platforms too. CDs force me to listen to the whole album instead of listening to random playlists. I think we'll see a resurgence of the past in search of meaning. For instance, how many of you wander through Netflix and can't find anything interesting to watch? I miss the video rental shops where you could always find an offbeat, artsy movie from the Balkans.
What we're experiencing is the pendulum starting to swing back the other way. Thank you for speaking your piece about this as a YTuber! There is quality and value in long form content and monetization that benefits creators. TikTok has become mostly posts of cope and cringe. Total brain rot. This is why I've changed the way I watch videos. I no longer use instagram and never used tiktok or snap. I watch youtube, turn off my watch history, and therefore I don't get any algorithms. I go to my subscriptions, I see videos in chronological order so I don't miss any. I'm only seeing who I've subscribed to, which is nice.
Good thinking. I watch based on my subscriptions which is timeline based which is great. I didn't think about turning off the history. Not sure if that works for my usage or not. As much as I hate Google's enshitification of YT based on attempting to get more watch time rather than work for the betterment of the user, I pay for YT subscription and that is worth it for me: no ads, no ads for my kids, listen with the screen off for less distraction, etc... I with YT would respect users and creators and focus on giving us control of our experience and ways of cutting back spam, scam comments and anti-West trolls on my feed
One of the only creators I can legitimately remember the very first video I ever saw that they did. In this case it was the "I know you took my lettuce" turtle attacking the cat, and I saw it on Facebook no less.
I've tried 3 times to start a RUclips and Twitch account. I have ran it each time for about 6 months, There is no incentive to keep going. New channels, and old, are having a hard time making any head way to even earn revenue of any kind. I agree with you 100% Ozzy Man! Another thing is that, like you said, if you ask for support you then you feel like a beggar and thats not right. All these platforms forget how they have gotten as big as they are...the creators.
Yeah, I’m 56 & I’ve never messed with it. I do sometimes enjoy short form content on RUclips (I like that I can watch something interesting for 10-20 seconds & go right back to the video I was previously viewing). Other than that, I’ve yet to see the pull of tik tok, other than further reducing the already rapidly reducing attention spans across the country😞
As someone who works in the tech world, I hate the way modern tech is shaping our world. Moving from CD to Spotify might have hurt sales but at least it could be explained by ease of access to consumers. Streaming giants releasing everything at once instead of weekly episodes broke the sense of community that only weekly shows like GOT, TWD, HOTD could master. Now with TikTok and Reels, we rely too much on scrolling for dopamine and it's so goddamn easy to fall out of a healthy routine due to the addictiveness. Nothing about TikTok makes sense, it may be addictive, but at what cost or benefit? I see a great cost but no benefit whatsoever.
It had enough of a benefit where the USA had to ban it due to Israel being exposed / exposing themselves 1 to many times whichever came first, but if you want actual benefits I think for at least the gaming space short form content is actually pretty ok and beneficial
As someone who also works in tech, I can’t stand how much tech is changing things. Instead of playing around and seeing what works, and what doesn’t work with code, my younger coworkers are plugging in pre-existing snippets and feeding it to an AI, and “training” it to create the code for him. We’re literally teaching the younger generations to just STOP thinking for themselves. I know this can’t be said for everyone, there are still some people in the younger generations that still want to play around and learn things the way we did, but it’s an overwhelming amount who seem to just not want to think, they’d rather watch short form videos until they go to bed, then wake up and do it all over again the next day.
I'm 30 years old. Tik tok is the first thing that came out and I felt old because I simply did not understand it, to me it's just brainrot content. I see the short attention span in my niece and nephew that is has created and I wouldn't want that for my kids. Sadly even my dad has become hooked on the facebook shorts and I'm trying to make him understand it's not good for him. Personally I've stopped using social media in general and my life has improved massively from it. I see this shift in people my age and yeah, tiktok is just a cancer on society.

I’m making a videogame atm, and the TikTok-ification of video formats has absolutely wrecked how we have to approach trailers and promo. You HAVE TO make it so obnoxiously flashy and have that annoying “sizzle” reel at the start (like a trailer for a trailer) or the algorithm just will not give it any traction. It’s forcing all content towards this homogenized, over-edited slop. Nobody wants to take a moment to try and understand something that isn’t IMMEDIATELY grabbing attention, and if they do it doesn’t matter because the whole ecosystem is geared away from even showing anybody anything that’s a bit slower or more complex. It’s incredibly frustrating and demotivating. I feel ya, Ozzy.
I'm a voice actor (working primarily in video games), this is something I hear from indie studios a lot, and it guts me to hear. I totally get it though. My content that I used for promo just got crushed by the algorithm. I've been part of some beautiful trailers, that never saw the light of day, because they weren't attention-grabbing enough. Ugh. Great video mate, this is how a lot of us feel. The engagement in this video is a testament that there's still a demand for long form content and like-minded creators, but it is tough in its own right, and tough to gauge a future for content creators. Subscriber count on RUclips no longer means much with the introduction of Shorts. I used to dream of having 50k subscribers but now I wish I could go back to 5k subscribers pre-shorts, when 5k subs meant 5k viewers, not 50k subs for 5k long form, and 45k for shorts.
Can we also talk about how TikTok is changing the way people use language, and self-censorship? Even RUclips seems to have ventured down that rabbit hole to a degree. God forbid you use the word suicide... There are serious problems when you start censoring language like this.
I agree. YT censors a good half of my comments, these days. They take down the most innocuous things, like a recommendation of sultanas as a sweet treat. What bugs me, is that they never explain _why._ How is one supposed to learn? It's truly Kafkaesque.
RUclips has become so addictive. I never was addicted to YT up until like last year or so. Since then the algorithm has gotten so good and my self-control lacking a** got it good.

Creators used to get over 50% of ad revenue?! Damn! One of my new short videos RUclips gets $9.65 from advertisers for 1k views, of which I get $2.72. That's less than 30%. The whole world is going down the toilet.
RUclips is a bandwagon though, unless you got on it early, you don't stand a chance making enough money to make this a full time job (insomuch as making a living).

Then the 70+ million subscribers came along and showed that you could pull in the mega bucks, and suddenly every kid in school wanted to be a 'RUclipsr'... I doubt the YT could sustain paying out so much, or simply got greedy (probably both) and took off 20% of revenue paid.... I expect they even moved the goal posts to make it that you needed 1000s of views to even qualify for being monetised. TikTok's made it easier to make 30 second clips... but what you do on YT and FB is proper quality content and entertainment. Ozzy, you forgot to address the REAL reason ALL platforms like this suck today: The vicious cycle of people wanting to create “content” just to get that easy ad money, and the platforms themselves seeing that and shoving more and more ads in everyone’s face at all times. Then even MORE people want to be rich and famous, then even MORE ads, until we have the system we have today: MOST popular people here create “content” SOLELY to get easy money. They make soft, watered down garbage that advertisers approve of, and gear their videos specifically towards maximizing income. Content ALWAYS suffers when that happens, and I said previously, your own content has suffered just the same. Your videos from way back when you didn’t care about ad revenue were TOP TITS. Now they conform to the guidelines and have suffered. This is UNIVERSALLY true across the internet. And of it continues it will be the death of real quality content.

Which they really didn't, you'll notice generally the only employees speaking are ex employees who no longer have any influence on how things are run. Not to mention it just feels like "okay you were there and got paid to be a part of the bad stuff, so now that you're no longer profiting off it it's suddenly bad".

Agencies were a 50/50 partnership with creators until someone had the bright idea of "hey, why don't we ruin the business!" and shaft the creators. Although they made money in the short term, the agencies basically destroyed their business model. I was wondering when those kinds of ideas would emerge in the social media space. Fair rant. I only use RUclips, can't stand the rest, but the shit influence they are having does suck. RUclips likes pushing premium which isn't bad for family plan with music, and apparently kicks a bit more to creators? They should put an option to disable shorts for those users as a start.

Oz, I own a board game store in Canada and do my best to encourage in person experience. Social life. I do meet up groups 3 or 4 days a week because I'm a huge extrovert. But society is melting away. So many people under 50 years have no social life. No social skills. And if they aren't a content creator, the are a content consumer. En mass. People don't look eachother in the eyes any more. And most life a diminished life of screen time.

@@kablah777 Totally agree for phone, there the homepage is definetely full of shorts. The phone app is just complete shit overall.
For other platforms this is not true.
On PC and TV the homepage shows only one row of shorts and you have to scroll a fair bit until it shows up.
I guess youtube is just adjusting to the market. When people are on their phone, the majority will choose short from content. No one is going to watch a 90 minute documentary about the Apollo missions while they are sitting on the shitter or waiting for the train.
If youtube doesn't offer short form content on phones the users will go back to instagram and tiktok. And that would be a significant number, because smartphones are the most used devices. Obviously yt wants a slice of that pie.
But I agree in the sense that the yt homepage should not contain shorts. There is a tab specifically for shorts at the bottom. So no need to have them on the homepage too.
And remember, yt are still the only ones who offer high quality, long form, horizontal content. (I hope it stays that way, because yt has some really, really high quality creators)

I would have absolutely no problem with short form content in general being banned. But for different reasons: tiktoks, reels and shorts do spread an incredible amount of lies and misinformation on every topic you could think of.
They are one of the main reasons the gap between left and right in Europe and the U.S. is getting bigger and bigger.
This might sound very extreme, but sadly, it's reality. Until there is some sort of quality control, this form of content will endanger the western world in general.
Chinese and russian governments are very restrictive on what content they allow on these platforms (if they allow these platforms at all) while using the unregulatedness of the western world to spread misinformation and thus hate and diversion. Russian and chinese bot and troll farms are no fairy tales. They are a reality and they use social media and specifically short form content to manipulate us.
Yeah nah yeah. My income has dropped to an amount not worth the effort. RUclips treats its creators amazingly badly. It paid me not one penny for any of my 'shorts' which it forced me to make, and now Facebook is happily showing my videos to millions of viewers and has not paid me a single penny, claiming that I have violated its rules , but not telling me which rules, so there is nothing I can do about it. I can't have done anything very serious, else it would not be happy to use my videos so much on its site. Even if I could sort this out, by the time I did, all my videos there would be past their peaks of views. I cannot contact a human at either organisation.

Its just another trick to make you click more and more trying to find something worthy to watch. 😠 They also rig it as default so you dont have to click on a vid so you count up a click rate just by scrolling. Cursor passes over a thumbnail counts as a view. Unless you make the effort to turn that default function off.
I agree - I struggle to get the notifications for stuff I want, and watch often - it drops off to be replaced by shit, and I just watch much less RUclips now as a result.

One thing I’ve noticed with RUclips creators I subscribe to lately. They either put out shorts, which I don’t like watching, that are usually clips of older videos, or they put out 2-4 hour streams that I don’t have time to sit and watch. 5,10,30 minute videos are what I’m here for. I’ve noticed that since I don’t click on shorts or ridiculously long videos I’ve started to get less and less notifications from channels I’m subscribed to even with notifications turned on. Some I even thought were dead channels because I’ve seen nothing from them only to actually click on them in my subscriptions and find out they have posted tons of stuff but they are either shorts or long ass streams. Creators are shooting themselves in the foot by changing their formats, content, or styles. If you continue to do you Ozzy man I will be here. However, I’m not the type to follow to a new platform because I just can’t be bothered. Keep uploading to RUclips and I’ll watch it all.

It's sad, because RUclips used to be so much better - you could look up a recipe or carpentry advice, or support animal rights organisations or watch old music videos or take a break with genuine comedians doing videos perfect for lunchtime distraction ( like Ozzyman!). Now I feel it's changed, and this was a great explanation of why.... As to the rest, I do not have tiktok or Instagram on my phone. I keep youtube history off, and use a completely blank email for youtube to prevent any suggestions, data collection, etc, because otherwise I get shorts popping up, which I find disturbing.

I'm not one to complain about inevitable change and technological advancement. But Tiktok (plus YT shorts, App games, or any similar platform) isn't "content," it's a vehicle for psychological addiction, and becomes no different than substance abuse.
I have resisted joining TikTok for years and I still haven't. I mean what can a viewer even get from a 15 second video? Nothing. The reason I joined YT almost 18 years ago was to learn and you learn and get nothing from short form content. Its a total waste of time but now YT is DEAD SET on short-form BS. There's a real world right outside my door that's been going on for 13.8 billion years. That's what I call long-form content and its far more rewarding than swiping away your entire life doing and creating nothing.
The only ones I've seen are the ones reloaded to RUclips, I don't do Facebook or Instagram or X so don't see them there

If THAT is the generation that is starting to become disillusioned with the modus opirandi of online mental manipulation, it really deserves being reassessed and adjusted. @shalashaska615 his latest endeavor was more of an aggregator. However, his voiceovers definitely do add something to the videos. Somebody has to write those jokes and that script. So I do see him as a creator in some sense, even if the video when shot is not his.

I also mean that there are TikTok length videos here on RUclips that are supposedly "reactions" , and they are just stealing someone else's video, and putting their face in the corner. Absolutely no value added to someone else's video at all. I follow an animal sanctuary, so I'm always very wary of this sort of thing, making sure ther content or another couple of vloggers' that I know doesn't appear on somebody else's "channel"
The problem with tiktok is it keeps showing videos it wants you to see. I can't even have a discussion with my brother anymore because he gets all his information from tiktok and it keeps showing him specific things the tiktok algorithm wants him to see. He doesn't have a wide enough view of the world to even have a discussion about issues in the world. It's frustrating....
TikTok actually works as a fruit machine to create addiction. A scroll is easier than a click and as you scroll. The algorithm will on purpose show you videos you don’t want to see to give you a great feeling when you hit a video you will want to see. So like every 10 (as example) you get to see 3 winners, 4 maybe and 2-3 uninteresting.
It's called confirmation bias, people used to have to look for content that suited their mindset, and would occasionally find a differing view that might enlighten them to the actual complexity of an event.
Then they just applied algorithms that did the searching for you, add that to short content format and even the most one eyed now has no need to do any effort.
No longer will a punter accidentally see an opposing view that sew a seed of nuance. Except when they actively go on to repeat the garbage they have fed on.
The zombie apocalypse is here already, just not like the movies script it.
I should add that my brother is a great person. I love hanging out with him, he's s an amazing dad and person and even though we're 12 years apart in age, we are good friends. He's a better person than I am. He is just young enough to get sucked into this garbage while I'm old enough to remember getting the newspaper every day as an adult... 😂 So I'm old old.
I have TikTok. I watched a few videos on it but I just don't become addicted. The videos it shows me bore me. It also looks so obsessed with unrealistic beauty standards and stuff, that I just become disgusted.

I stopped using all social media two months ago and,I'm loving that my attention span is working oul the atrophy that was settling in. I limit my YT use as well, and my love of my local library has been reinvigorated.
I can't recommend stopping social media - or taking a theee month break at least. It's frustrating and so rude when visiting someone and they keep looking at their phone, but I try to talk about funny and/or embarrassingly funny personal stories that'll grab their attention and make eye contact again 😊

As a RUclips content creator, I feel it. Just 2 years ago you could make content for yourself that you thought was funny and helpful. That isn't the case any longer. Fighting the algorithm is my full time job now.

I must be getting old. I do not use Facebook, twitter (or X, as that wanker changed it to) and I do not use tiktok. I have no intention of using it. I object to the loss of attention spans, I believe it's unhealthy what tiktok is promoting.

Brother. I began getting deeply involved with social media sites in 2002, even before MySpace, so I have seen the continuous dumbification of society online. It makes me feel old to be that guy that says "things were better back in my day," BUT THEY WERE, OBJECTIVELY.
I get sad when i see how intelligent chatters get drowned out on Twitch or youtube chat in a sea of Omegalols, or get outright banned because some young brainrot mod misunderstands or confuses the context of 1 chat message. The intelligent communicators get thinned out, leaving behind only the emoter horde.
The last time I saw anyone champion Twitter as a platform was around 2011/2012, when it was truely a time based timeline, and not an algorithm based one. Where lucky (or strategically) timed posts meant anyone's posts could be seen equally, not just the ones that paid most or have been around since the beginning. New accounts could thrive on the merit of their content.
Tech just seems to be falling apart, because the hackers that originally built it want nothing to do with it, and the sales people that run it have it no idea what they are doing or what real users actually want.

I'm back to buying CDs because I'm pissed off with music streaming platforms too. CDs force me to listen to the whole album instead of listening to random playlists. I think we'll see a resurgence of the past in search of meaning. For instance, how many of you wander through Netflix and can't find anything interesting to watch? I miss the video rental shops where you could always find an offbeat, artsy movie from the Balkans.
What we're experiencing is the pendulum starting to swing back the other way. Thank you for speaking your piece about this as a YTuber! There is quality and value in long form content and monetization that benefits creators. TikTok has become mostly posts of cope and cringe. Total brain rot. This is why I've changed the way I watch videos. I no longer use instagram and never used tiktok or snap. I watch youtube, turn off my watch history, and therefore I don't get any algorithms. I go to my subscriptions, I see videos in chronological order so I don't miss any. I'm only seeing who I've subscribed to, which is nice.
Tried that and youtube has really managed to put all kinds of cringe and shit on my timeline,it simply forced me to turn the history back on

Good thinking. I watch based on my subscriptions which is timeline based which is great. I didn't think about turning off the history. Not sure if that works for my usage or not. As much as I hate Google's enshitification of YT based on attempting to get more watch time rather than work for the betterment of the user, I pay for YT subscription and that is worth it for me: no ads, no ads for my kids, listen with the screen off for less distraction, etc... I with YT would respect users and creators and focus on giving us control of our experience and ways of cutting back spam, scam comments and anti-West trolls on my feed

I've tried 3 times to start a RUclips and Twitch account. I have ran it each time for about 6 months, There is no incentive to keep going. New channels, and old, are having a hard time making any head way to even earn revenue of any kind. I agree with you 100% Ozzy Man! Another thing is that, like you said, if you ask for support you then you feel like a beggar and thats not right. All these platforms forget how they have gotten as big as they are...the creators.

I do sometimes enjoy short form content on RUclips (I like that I can watch something interesting for 10-20 seconds & go right back to the video I was previously viewing). Other than that, I’ve yet to see the pull of tik tok, other than further reducing the already rapidly reducing attention spans across the country😞

As someone who works in the tech world, I hate the way modern tech is shaping our world. Moving from CD to Spotify might have hurt sales but at least it could be explained by ease of access to consumers. Streaming giants releasing everything at once instead of weekly episodes broke the sense of community that only weekly shows like GOT, TWD, HOTD could master. Now with TikTok and Reels, we rely too much on scrolling for dopamine and it's so goddamn easy to fall out of a healthy routine due to the addictiveness. Nothing about TikTok makes sense, it may be addictive, but at what cost or benefit? I see a great cost but no benefit whatsoever.
It had enough of a benefit where the USA had to ban it due to Israel being exposed / exposing themselves 1 to many times whichever came first, but if you want actual benefits I think for at least the gaming space short form content is actually pretty ok and beneficial
As someone who also works in tech, I can’t stand how much tech is changing things. Instead of playing around and seeing what works, and what doesn’t work with code, my younger coworkers are plugging in pre-existing snippets and feeding it to an AI, and “training” it to create the code for him. We’re literally teaching the younger generations to just STOP thinking for themselves.
I know this can’t be said for everyone, there are still some people in the younger generations that still want to play around and learn things the way we did, but it’s an overwhelming amount who seem to just not want to think, they’d rather watch short form videos until they go to bed, then wake up and do it all over again the next day.
This is why I have never touched TikTok.... its just mindrot nonsense...
I'm 30 years old. Tik tok is the first thing that came out and I felt old because I simply did not understand it, to me it's just brainrot content. I see the short attention span in my niece and nephew that is has created and I wouldn't want that for my kids. Sadly even my dad has become hooked on the facebook shorts and I'm trying to make him understand it's not good for him. Personally I've stopped using social media in general and my life has improved massively from it. I see this shift in people my age and yeah, tiktok is just a cancer on society.

Thank you for sharing this. Everything you're saying is so true. I'm 51 and have a 14 yo and I see in real time how addictive shorts are. I only read actual books and watch 20-30 minute RUclips video's but I can't watch a movie anymore. So it's seeping into everyone's collective dopamine hit.
I've watched maybe 5 new movies in 10 years. It's really sad.....yet I can watch the equivalent in YT videos and think nothing of it.

I’m making a videogame atm, and the TikTok-ification of video formats has absolutely wrecked how we have to approach trailers and promo. You HAVE TO make it so obnoxiously flashy and have that annoying “sizzle” reel at the start (like a trailer for a trailer) or the algorithm just will not give it any traction. It’s forcing all content towards this homogenized, over-edited slop. Nobody wants to take a moment to try and understand something that isn’t IMMEDIATELY grabbing attention, and if they do it doesn’t matter because the whole ecosystem is geared away from even showing anybody anything that’s a bit slower or more complex. It’s incredibly frustrating and demotivating.

I'm a voice actor (working primarily in video games), this is something I hear from indie studios a lot, and it guts me to hear. I totally get it though. My content that I used for promo just got crushed by the algorithm. I've been part of some beautiful trailers, that never saw the light of day, because they weren't attention-grabbing enough. Ugh. Great video mate, this is how a lot of us feel. The engagement in this video is a testament that there's still a demand for long form content and like-minded creators, but it is tough in its own right, and tough to gauge a future for content creators. Subscriber count on RUclips no longer means much with the introduction of Shorts. I used to dream of having 50k subscribers but now I wish I could go back to 5k subscribers pre-shorts, when 5k subs meant 5k viewers, not 50k subs for 5k long form, and 45k for shorts.
I've never used TikTok. But RUclips and Facebook has been pushing TikTok videos on me so hard. It's so annoying and bad.
Can we also talk about how TikTok is changing the way people use language, and self-censorship? Even RUclips seems to have ventured down that rabbit hole to a degree. God forbid you use the word suicide... There are serious problems when you start censoring language like this.

Creators used to get over 50% of ad revenue?! Damn! One of my new short videos RUclips gets $9.65 from advertisers for 1k views, of which I get $2.72. That's less than 30%. The whole world is going down the toilet.
RUclips is a bandwagon though, unless you got on it early, you don't stand a chance making enough money to make this a full time job (insomuch as making a living).

Then the 70+ million subscribers came along and showed that you could pull in the mega bucks, and suddenly every kid in school wanted to be a 'RUclipsr'... I doubt the YT could sustain paying out so much, or simply got greedy (probably both) and took off 20% of revenue paid.... I expect they even moved the goal posts to make it that you needed 1000s of views to even qualify for being monetised.

Ozzy, you forgot to address the REAL reason ALL platforms like this suck today: The vicious cycle of people wanting to create “content” just to get that easy ad money, and the platforms themselves seeing that and shoving more and more ads in everyone’s face at all times. Then even MORE people want to be rich and famous, then even MORE ads, until we have the system we have today: MOST popular people here create “content” SOLELY to get easy money. They make soft, watered down garbage that advertisers approve of, and gear their videos specifically towards maximizing income. Content ALWAYS suffers when that happens, and I said previously, your own content has suffered just the same. Your videos from way back when you didn’t care about ad revenue were TOP TITS. Now they conform to the guidelines and have suffered. This is UNIVERSALLY true across the internet. And of it continues it will be the death of real quality content.
By the time YT finally decided they were going to let me monetize my videos, it wasn't worth doing anymore.

Thanks for discussing all the behind the scenes bs. I don't know how youtubers keep grinding out the content. Twenty years ago, I went through something similar with photo agencies. Agencies were a 50/50 partnership with creators until someone had the bright idea of "hey, why don't we ruin the business!" and shaft the creators. Although they made money in the short term, the agencies basically destroyed their business model. I was wondering when those kinds of ideas would emerge in the social media space.
